Gladys P. Hauserman

Gladys T. Hauserman, 96, of Central City, died at her home on Tuesday, November 2, 2004. Memorial services will be Saturday, November 27th at 1: 30 P.M. at the United Presbyterian Church in Central City with Rev. Monty Nelson officiating. Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials only, to the Presbyterian Church.

Gladys was born on September 20, 1908, in Smith County, Kansas, to Guy W. and Goldie G. (Kersey) Thompson. She grew up in Smith County and Alma, Nebraska where she graduated from Alma High School. On June 11, 1927, Gladys Thompson and Clayton J. Hauserman were united in marriage. In their early marriage they made their home in Hastings and Iowa City, Iowa. In 1942, they moved to Central City. Mr. Hauserman died on December 6, 1973.

Gladys was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Central City. She enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and entertaining. In 1957, Gladys was named the Citizen of the Year for her work in promoting the building of the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son – John C. and Jeanne (Greving) Hauserman of Auburn and her daughter – Sara A. and Gerard Laureyns of Larkspur, California; one sister – Daisy Gewinner of Phoenix; four grandchildren-Shawn Laureyns, Ryan Laureyns, Douglas Hauserman, and Darcie Briggs; and two great grandsons-Tye Owen Briggs and Liam Laureyns.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers – Raymond and Donald Thompson; and one sister – Mabel Zimmer.

Alvin D. Golgert

Alvin D. Golgert, 85 years of age of Hordville, died Tuesday, November 09, 2004 at the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Graveside services will be held the Aurora cemetery on Saturday, November 13th at 10: 00 AM. with the Rev. Gilbert Larsen officiating. Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home in Central City on Friday, November 12th from 6 to 8 P.M. Military rites will be performed by the Aurora VFW Post 4993.

Alvin Donovan Golgert was born on January 17, 1919, in Juniata, Nebraska to William and Amilia (Vilmar) Golgert. He graduated form the Trumbull High School with the Class of 1938. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and served in the Pacific until his honorable discharge in 1945. Alvin D. Golgert and Berdena Andersen were united in marriage in Grand Island on June 21, 1950. They lived in rural Hamilton County before moving to the family farm south of Hordville in the early 1960’s. He farmed and continued to live on the home place.

Alvin loved his family, his farm, and raising livestock. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6 in Central City and the VFW Post #4993 in Aurora.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son – Robin and Vanessa Golgert of Central City; one daughter Emilia Golgert of Hordville; and two grandchildren, Eronne and Nolan Golgert both of Central City.

He was preceded in death by his wife Berdena on March 12, 2002, one brother, Wayne, four sisters: Verna Robb, LaVonne Terrell, Laura Treat and Beulah Underwood.

Prudence Pullen

Prudence Pullen, 94 years of age, of Central City, died at the Litzenberg Long Care in Central City on Tuesday, August 17, 2004. There will be no visitation. A family burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Memorial Services will be at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 21, 2004, at 2: 00 P.M. with Ellen Campbell officiating.

Prudence was born July 11, 1910, near Central City, to David McClellan and Annie (Mills) Baird. She graduated from Central City High School in 1927. She attended Nebraska Central College and went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree and also her Master’s Degree in Education from Kearney State College. She taught in Clarks for several years and then in North Platte Junior High for twenty years, retiring in 1975. She moved back to Central City at that time.

She married Earl Pullen in April, 1929. Earl passed away in May, 1948. She enjoyed sewing, sports, bird watching, and bridge. She also did substitute teaching in the Central City Schools until she was 80.

She was a third generation member of the United Presbyterian Church in Central City. She was a long time member of Kappa Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Survivors include, a daughter-in-law Frieda; two grandchildren, Cindy (Dallas) Reichenberg of Cedar Bluffs, and Dan (Deana) Pullen of Grand Island; two great grandchildren, Andrea Reichenberg and Kyle Pullen; two sisters in law Arline Baird and Martha Pullen both of Central City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her husband Earl, one son David, three sisters: Marjorie Rose, Annie Louise and Dorothy Mills and one brother Robert Baird.

Glenn G. John

Glenn Gene John, 76, of Lincoln formerly of Central City, died on Saturday, August 7th at Tabitha Nursing Home in Lincoln. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 11th, 2004 at 2: 00 P.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Troy Emley officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 10th from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hordville cemetery.

Glenn was born on February 22, 1928, in Arcadia to Owen J. and Gladys H. (Cremeen) John. The family moved from Arcadia to Central City. Glenn attended school in Central City until his family moved to Silver Creek, and he attended Silver Creek High School to complete his education. At the age of 17, Glenn enlisted in the United States Navy in February of 1946. He served in Japan and was honorably discharged in December of 1947. Glenn returned to Central City and on December 12, 1948 he married Bonnie Jean Johnson at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek. They lived in Central City and Glenn worked at various jobs—he was a farmhand, he worked at the lumber yard, Desch Monuments, the City Electric Department, and the Central City Police Department.

In 1957, they moved to Monterey Park, California. Glenn began working for A.D.T. Security Systems. After a successful career that lasted over 30 years, Glenn retired in 1990. They moved to San Dimas, California and he started working on several ideas he had in mind for inventions. He received a patent for a rotatable equipment table which he marketed on the internet. At the time of his death, he still had more ideas that he really wanted to accomplish. In February of 2004, Glenn and Bonnie decided to relocated back to Nebraska to be near family. They purchased a home in Lincoln, and Glenn became too ill to be active. After six months of intense pain and being cared for at home, Glenn went to Tabitha Nursing Home and with his family by his side, Glenn died the next day.

Glenn was a member of the Central City Fire Department, the American Legion in California and Lincoln, he enjoyed collecting eagle items, playing cards, and going to the horse races. Glenn was a tool addict, he collected every kind of tool and was a genuine fix-it-guy.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Bonnie, of Lincoln; one daughter-Cheryl John of Wahoo; two grandsons-Brian Gene Lofgren and Jedd Taylor Lofgren both of Wahoo; one brother-Dwain and Janet John of Lincoln; three sisters-Mildred Beck of Central City; Ramona and Lloyd Hurlbert of Whittier, California; Darline Trueman of LaHabra, California, many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter-three-year-old Kathleen Kay John; infant grandson-Brandon Lee Byars; one brother-Darwin John, two brothers-in-law – Glen Trueman and Roger Beck; and special life-time friend – Ted Catlett.

Alma A. Gleason

Alma Ann Gleason, 83, of Central City, died at her home on Sunday, August 15, 2004. Funeral services are Thursday, August 19th, 2004 at 2: 00 P.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 18th from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Alma was born on February 17, 1921, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Fred and Minnie Kropa. She graduated from high school in Scranton and then worked as a nanny in Jersey City, New Jersey. Here she met her future husband, Harold F. Gleason, who was in the military. Alma Ann Kropa and Harold Gleason were married on September 12, 1943, in Jersey City. They made their home in Central City, where Alma was a homemaker. After their children had been raised, Alma went to work at the Ordinance Plant for three years, she worked for 20 years at the Black Cat Café, the Nite and Day Café, and the East Gate Café in Central City. She also worked several years at the Alda Union 76 Restaurant.

Alma was raised in the Lutheran Faith and attended the Fairview United Methodist Church near Central City. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 40 years and volunteered at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop. Among her interests were embroidery, her flower garden, playing bingo; but her greatest enjoyment came from her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Harold of Central City; two sons – Richard and Diane Gleason of St. George, Utah; Wayne and Patty Gleason of Central City; one daughter – Karen and Allan Horita of Sacramento, California; one brother – Fred Kropa of Hop Bottom, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; four step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and 7 step great grandchildren.

Alma was preceded in death by her infant daughter- Marjorie; three brothers – Gus, Emil, and Walter; and two sisters – Ruth and Esther.

Leo Henry Brandenburg

Leo Henry Brandenburg, 78, of Central City, died on Monday, August 30, 2004, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. A private family service will be held. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Leo was born on May 19, 1926, in Iowa to John and Sylvia (Gries) Brandenburg. When he was a young boy, his family moved to Merrick County and lived near Archer, where Leo received his education. Leo enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 2, 1944 and was honorably discharged on January 5, 1945. On June 8, 1946, Leo H. Brandenburg and Sharon L. Harlow were united in marriage in Kansas. They lived their entire married life in Central City. Leo worked for the State of Nebraska Maintenance Department for several years, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, McIlnay’s Plumbing and Heating, Bonnavilla Homes, and in a span of over 40 years he worked at Schank’s Mink Farm in full-time and part-time capacities. Until he went into Central City Care Center in April of 2004, he continued to help out at the mink farm.

Among his hobbies were woodworking, gardening, bird watching, and he will be remembered for his love of telling jokes and his drawings.

Those left to cherish his memory are three sons – Douglas and Sue Brandenburg and Clinton Brandenburg both of Central City; David Brandenburg of Denver; one daughter – Joyce and Charles Clauff of Central City; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; three sisters – Phyllis Korth of Grand Island; Betty and Lorance Butcher of Clarks; and Ione and John Zabava of Fremont; and two brothers – Earl and Kay Brandenburg of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Clifford and Kathy Brandenburg of Des Moines, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon on October 6, 2000; one son – Steven Leo on June 2, 1977; one grandson – Ryan James Brandenburg on September 16, 1996; one great grandson – Cody Ray Maw on September 8, 1993; two sisters – Vera Lawson and Leta Brandenburg; and two brothers – Glen and John Brandenburg.

Billy O. Green

Billy O. Green, 80 years of age, of Lincoln, formerly of Central City, died Sunday morning May 19, 2002, at his home in Lincoln. Memorial graveside services will be Wednesday, May 22nd, at 1: 00 P.M., at the Central City cemetery. The Solt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of Nebraska or to Bill’s family.

Billy O. Green was born June 21, 1921 at Palmer, Nebraska, to W.E. and Jessie (Colburn) Green. He attended Oakdale School and graduated from high school in Cushing, Nebraska. Billy attended trade school in Omaha and after graduation he worked for Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle, Washington.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in June of 1942 and went through airplane mechanic school at the Lincoln Air Base in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1943 he was selected for pilot school and received his wings and commission as 2nd Lieutenant from single engine school, at Luke Field, Arizona. He served as an instructor pilot in California and a B-29 pilot at Kirkland Field, New Mexico.

He married Adeline Fogland of Palmer Nebraska in 1944. Two years later, in 1946 he was discharged from the military service and they made their home in Nebraska and farmed in the Archer and Palmer communities for 44 years before retiring in 1988. After retiring they sold the farm and moved into Grand Island, Nebraska where they lived untill 1997. In the fall of that year they moved to Lincoln, in part due to Bill’s failing health from emphysema.

Two children were born to this marriage, daughters Shelley and Sarah.

Bill was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post # 120 in Palmer. He was a 50 year member and past master twice of the Lone Tree Masonic Lodge #36 in Central City. He held a certificate of proficiency for over 25 years. He belong to the Arbor Chapter #200 Order of the Eastern Star in Central for over 50 years. Bill also was past Associate Guardian of Jobs Daughters and a member of the Methodist church.

Bill enjoyed many activities like hunting and fishing, especially in the areas around home when time permitted. When the grandkids were little, fishing in the creek on the farm was a special pastime. He enjoyed collecting new firearms and keeping them in top notch order. Books were always by his side and he read about animals, planes and books about the outdoors. Westerns were one of his favorites, Zane Grey was one of his favorite authors.

He always had a soft place for pets, especially his dog and cats. For many years he and Adeline attended square dances where he did the calling. Later they enjoyed dancing in Grand Island at the Liedercranz.

Bill was usually seen driving around Archer in his old blue pick up truck and in later years on his three-wheeler. He was always willing to help his neighbors with farm work or lend a hand whenever it was needed, usually putting off his own work until the end. He drove the maintainer in Archer and drove a school bus for Central City Public Schools for many years.

He was always ready to help his daughters with homework questions and never missed seeing then in a school program. He was a good husband and a good father.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline, 6201 Normal #319, Lincoln, Nebraska 68506, two daughters: Shelley Buchholz and her husband Craig and Sarah Barth and her husband Gary, four grand children: Jessie and Christian Barth and Steven and Scott Buchholz all of Lincoln, and two nephews and one niece. Bill was preceded in death by his parents one brother, Jerry and one sister Ann.

Berdena May Golgert

Berdena May Golgert, 84, of Hordville died at Aurora Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 12, 2002. Graveside services will be at the Aurora cemetery on Friday, March 15th at 2: 00 p.m. with Rev. Gilbert Larsen officiating. Visitation is Thursday, March 14th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Berdena was born on July 31, 1917 in Hamilton County to Andy C. and May (Bush) Andersen. She grew up in Hamilton County and attended rural schools. On June 21, 1950, Berdena M. Andersen and Alvin D. Golgert were united in marriage in Grand Island. The couple lived in rural Hamilton County before moving to the family farm south of Hordville in the early 1960’s. They farmed and have continued to live on the home place.

Berdena attended the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her family, pets, and farm life. When her parent’s health began to fail, she and Alvin lovingly cared for them.

Berdena is survived by her husband, Alvin of Hordville; one daughter-Emilia Golgert of Hordville; one son-Robin and his wife Vanessa Golgert of Central City; and two grandchildren-Eronne and Nolan Golgert both of Central City.

She was preceded in death by her parents in 1995 and 1996.

Bertha Elizabeth Conner

Bertha Elizabeth Conner, 82, of Central City, died on Tuesday, June 11th, 2002 at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services are Monday, June 17th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Pat Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, June 17th from 10: 00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Chapman.

Bertha was born on May 21, 1920 in the Swedish Hospital in Brooklyn, NY to Gustav and Theckla (Larson) Ericson. She attended PS 71 in Brooklyn and Junior and Senior High School in Sharon Hill, PA graduating from high school in 1937. She then was employed as a Secretary at the National Presbyterian Headquarters in Philadelphia and attended the Philadelphia School of Office Training and the Philadelphia School of the Bible. During her time in Philadelphia, she worked in a mission for disadvantaged children. She was organist at Dotterer Memorial Baptist Church in Philadelphia. Bertha continued in the secretarial profession for the next 34 years, working mainly with Christian organizations.

On June 5, 1943, Bertha E. Ericson and Denison D. Conner were united in marriage in Philadelphia. Denison and Bertha were blessed with the birth of twin sons, Alfred and Kenneth. She served faithfully with her husband at seven different pastorates in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Nebraska. They served the First Baptist Church in Chapman from 1976 until their retirement in 1984. They continued to live in Central City, but after retirement they served for over a decade at the Palestine Baptist Church in Platte County.

Although having a quiet personality, Bertha loved to be with people. She was talented and whenever called upon, she was a charming and capable public speaker. In addition to the organ and piano, she played the accordion well and had a strong and pleasing singing voice. Above all, she is remembered as an ememplary Christian, and a devoted wife and mother. Bertha was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chapman.

Survivors include her husband, Denison of Central City; twin sons-Alfred of Central City and Kenneth of Grand Island; one sister-Mildred Ericson of Brooklyn, NY; and many friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Hannah Louise Hobbs

Hannah Louise Hobbs, 83 years of age, of Central City, died at her home on Saturday, July 20, 2002. Funeral services are Thursday, July 25th, at 10: 30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, July 24th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Hannah was born on September 2, 1918 in Central City to Lawrence W. and Bessie M. (Morris) Nitzel. She graduated from Central City High School in 1936. On Decemaber 24, 1937, Hannah L. Nitzel and Roy F. "Skippy" Hobbs were united in marriage in Central City. Hannah lived all of her life in Central City. She was a homemaker, a dedicated volunteer in our community, and helped her husband "Skippy" with his work at the Central City Republican Nonpareil and also with delivering funeral announcements cards for Solt Funeral Home for many years.

Hannah was a member of the United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday School for over 70 years. For many years she was a volunteer for the Head Start Program, the kindergarten class at Central City Schools, the Red Cross Blood Mobile, and was an active member of the Central City Senior Center. She and her husband enjoyed dancing and she canned the produce from "Skippy’s" garden.

Survivors include three grandsons-Vincent and Cathy Warren of North Platte; Boyd and Krissa Warren of Evanston, WY; and Todd Warren of Evanstons, WY; two brothers-Morris and Virginia Nitzel of Central City; Paul Nitzel of San Diego; and 8 great grandchildren.

Hannah was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; one daughter-Sandra Warren in 1993; and one sister-Betty Holtorf.

Janet Leah Garretson

Janet Leah Garretson, 42, of Leigh, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 31st at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk. Services will be Friday, August 2nd at 10: 30 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Rich Savage officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, August 1st from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in the Bureau cemetery by Pierce Chapel Church near Clarks.

Janet was born on June 5, 1960 in Aitkin, Minnesota to Floyd and Jeannette (Lamke) Watson. As a young girl, her family lived in Emily, Grand Rapids, and Goodland, Minnesota. She graduated from Nashwak-Kiewatan High School in 1978. Janet L. Watson and Gene W. Garretson were united in marriage on October 13, 1979 in Goodland, Minnesota. They moved to Jacobson, Minnesota where Janet worked at the variety store; then to Nebraska where they lived in Grant for four years, Imperial for one year; and Bassett for two years. They returned to Goodland for two years and in 1987, they moved to Leigh. Janet worked in Madison, Clarkson, and Columbus at Dale’s Manufacturing.

Janet was devoted to her family. She enjoyed animals, cooking, and gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Gene of Leigh; her mother Jeannette Watson of Goodland, MN; two daughters-Amanda Garretson of Norfolk and Alicia Garretson of Leigh; one son-Kaleb Garretson of Leigh; four brothers-Delane Watson of Florida; Robert Watson of Grant; Eric Watson of Floodwood, MN; and Neal Watson of Goodland, MN; three brothers-in-law Richard and LaRae Garretson of North Platte; Ronald and Rose Garretson of Cozad; and Kevin and Deana Garretson of Leigh; one sister-in-law Debbie and Phil Conklin of Douglas, WY.

She was preceded in death by her father; an infant brother; and her father-in-law, Robert Garretson in 2001; and her mother-in-law, Dorothy Garretson in 2002.

Clarence Vincent Benson

Clarence Vincent Benson, age 81, of Worms, died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island. Services will be Wednesday, July 17th at 10: 30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Worms with Rev. Robert Harms officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 16th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence was born on May 30, 1921 near Hordville to Birger and Ethel (Timmons) Benson. He attended school in Hamilton County. After completing his education, Clarence continued to live in the Hordville area. He and his brothers worked together doing various types of farm work. On July 13, 1942, Clarence entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged on February 13, 1946. On April 6, 1947 Clarence V. Benson and Louise E. Frauen were united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran Church in Worms. They began their married life farming in the Chapman and Worms area and farmed here until their retirement in 1983. They continued living on the home place, but turned the farming operation over to three of their sons.

Clarence was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and was very active in the life of the church. He was a member of the American Legion Burton Beyer Post No. 120 in Palmer. Clarence enjoyed fishing, gardening, and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Louise, of Worms; four sons-Chris and Diane Benson of Lincoln; Dale and Janet Benson of Worms; Birger and Connie Benson of Grand Island; and Larry and Aimee Benson of Worms; Three brothers-Verner and Alma Benson of Grand Island; Edwin and Ann Benson of Fremont; Floyd and Joan Benson of Waukee, IA: three sisters-Agnes and Bernard Andreasen of Grand Island; Esther and Roy Kuhn of Ames, IA; and Audrey Nygren of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren-Jennifer, Stacie, Brian, Kelly, Jaci, Brooke, April, Andrew, Leah, and Joel Benson; Renee Ricketts, Anthony Sloan, John Schulters, and Crystal Schulters; and two great grandchildren-Haleigh and Kyle Benson.

He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Margaret Ann; and four brothers-Elmer, Albin, Harold, and Carl Benson.
