Kenneth W. Holmes

Kenneth Wendall Holmes, 93, of Central City formerly of Chapman, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Monday, January 28th. Services are Wednesday, January 30th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Chapman cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, January 30th from 9 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Kenneth was born on December 31, 1908 at Grant, Nebraska to Anson K. and Eva (Laub) Holmes. His family owned the Grant Tribune. Kenneth attended school in Grant, Nebraska; Aiken, Minnesota, Taylor, Sumner, and Kearney, Nebraska. In 1928, Kenneth graduated from the Kearney Teacher’s College Normal Training. Immediately after graduation from high school, he went to St. Louis, Missouri where he enrolled in the Robertson School of Aviation to fulfill a long time dream of becoming a pilot. The next several years he spent the time barnstorming in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa; and logging hours in all types of small airplanes and gaining expertise in his profession. He was a member of a group called the "Famous Flyers". In 1939, Kenneth was given his instructors rating and was hired by the P-T Airservice of Hays, Kansas as an instructor for the Civilian Pilot Training Program.

On December 31, 1939 Kenneth W. Holmes and Emily "Jerrie" Arnhold were united in marriage in Stockton, Kansas. Kenneth continued his flight instruction at Hays for several more years. He then was appointed flight examiner for North Central and Northwest Kansas. At the end of WW II, Kenneth went to Cheyenne, Wyoming and worked as an expediter in the United Airlines Modification Center. After completing his work in Cheyenne, Kenneth moved his family to a farm near Odessa where they farmed for seven years. In 1953, they moved to Kearney and helped to care for his parents until their death. In 1959, the family moved to their farm near Chapman, where his grandparents James and Margaret Holmes had homesteaded in 1876. While living in Chapman, Kenneth, Jerrie, and their daughter Pat operated the Fun Times Kiddie Rides. They retired in the mid 1980’s and in 1997 they moved into Central City. Kenneth went to live at the Central City Care Center in 1998.

Kenneth was a member of the First Methodist Church in Kearney and attended the Chapman United Methodist Church. Kenneth enjoyed reading and music. He played the clarinet in high school and for the Kearney municipal bands. He also played the saxophone and at the age of 60, Kenneth learned to play the organ. He continued his love of music throughout his entire life.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Emily "Jerrie" Holmes of Central City and one cousin, Darrold Laub of Bishop, California.

Russell "Jim" Jacobi

Russell "Jim" Jacobi, 75 years of age, of Clarks, died at the Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX on Friday, February 8, 2002. Funeral services will be held at the Chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City on Thursday, February 14th, at 11: 00 A.M. with the President Ronald Spencer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Burial will be in the Clarks cemetery. Visitation will be at Solt Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 13th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 P.M.

Jim was born on April 27, 1926 in Nance County to Albert G. and Hazel L. (White) Jacobi. He attended school in Nance and Merrick Counties. After completing his education, Jim farmed until 1945 when he entered the Merchant Marines. He returned to Clarks to farm before entering the U.S. Army on December 7, 1950 and served in the Korean Conflict in the 32nd Infantry Regiment, Heavy Motor Company, 7th Division. Jim was honorably discharged on September 8, 1952. On November 23, 1953 Russell "Jim" Jacobi and Diane E. Mellor were united in marriage in Salt Lake City. They farmed in Clarks for several years before moving to Omaha where Jim attended Barber School and practiced as a barber for three years in Omaha. They then returned to Clarks and he continued his profession as a barber. Jim became a hog buyer for Clougherty’s Packing and retired from there in 1997.

Jim was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, had served as an elder and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Jim was a member of the Clarks VFW and was a past commander, the American Legion Post of Silver Creek, he was a past member of the Clarks Village Board, a volunteer fireman, and a volunteer on the emergency unit for Clarks. The AKSARBEN Good Neighbor Award was presented to Jim for his work with the emergency unit. Jim enjoyed gardening, woodworking, meeting friends for morning and afternoon coffee at the Country Corner in Clarks, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Diane of Clarks; one daughter-Michelle Foss of Lakewood, CO; one son Bill and wife Christy Jacobi and grandchildren Clarissa and Caleb Jacobi of Omaha; one sister-Peggy (Lisle) Mangelsen of Central City; one brother-John Jacobi of Genoa; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister-Jeanette Salyers, and three brothers- Raymond, Marvin, and Merle Jacobi.

Christol Mae Cramer

Christol Mae Cramer, 91, of Polk died at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg on Thursday, February 14, 2002. Services are Monday, February 18th at 2: 00 p.m. at The United Methodist Church in Polk with Rev. Anderson W. Kwankin officiating. Visitation is Sunday, February 17th from 4 to 7 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Interment will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk. Memorials are suggested to the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg or the United Methodist Church in Polk.

Christol was born on May 5, 1910 in Polk County to John Henry and Adella Fern (Doremus) Quick. She attended school in Polk County and in Cheyenne County and The Grand Island School of Business. On October 19, 1929, Christol Quick and Cleo R. Cramer were united in marriage at the First Methodist Church in Grand Island. They made their home in the Polk area. Mrs. Cramer was a homemaker and worked 18 years at the Good Samaritan Center in Osceola on the Care Staff. Mr. Cramer died on November 29, 1983. Christol had been living at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg since 1994.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Polk, the Rebekah Lodge, and she enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and gardening.

Survivors include five daughters: Jean (Elwood) Brinley of San Jacinto, CA, Joyce (Richard, Jr.) Sealey of Polk, Judy Jones of Whitewater, Wisconsin, Joan (Everett) Frahm of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jackie (Gerald) Cline of Central City; three sisters-Dorothy Strohman of Worland, WY; Beverly Smith of Hanna, WY; and June Wunder of Torrington, WY; two brothers-Charles (Georgia) Loveland of Las Vegas and Don (Marge) Loveland of Long Pine, WY: 21 grandchildren; 2 step granddaughters; 54 great grandchildren; and many great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter-Jeanette Shostrom; two grandsons-Roger Shostrom and Steven Jones; and seven brothers.

Charlotte Eliza Colbert

Charlotte Eliza Colbert, 94, of Clarks, died on Friday, February 22 at the Central City Care Center. Graveside services are Tuesday, February 26th at 10 A.M. at the Clarks cemetery with Rev. Ralph Supernaw officiating. There will be no visitation. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established in her memory.

Charlotte was born on September 13, 1907 at the Pierce Chapel Community in Merrick County to Arthur F. and Jennie A. (Campaign) Pierce. She grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1925. With the death of her father, Charlotte stayed at home to care for her mother, help raise her brothers and sister, and work on the farm. On June 2, 1939, Charlotte E. Pierce and Earl Howard Colbert were united in marriage in Greeley, Colorado. They made their home in Clarks where Charlotte devoted her time to raising her own family. Mr. Colbert died on February 21, 1963. Charlotte continued to live in Clarks until 1999 when she came to live at the Central City Care Center.

She was a member of the Congregational Church in Clarks and had been involved in their women’s organization.

Survivors include two sons-Earl H. and Mary Colbert of Omaha and Clifford Colbert of Lincoln; one daughter-Glenda C. Homan of Tennessee; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; five brothers-Leonard, Edwin, Donald, Raymond, and Fred Pierce; two sisters-Goldie and an infant sister.

J. Harvey Sundberg

J. Harvey Sundberg, 82, of Polk, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Saturday, August 3rd. Services will be Tuesday, August 6th at 10: 30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Polk with Kelly Knox, P.M.A. officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Lutheran cemetery at Swede Home. Visitation is Monday, August 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk.

Harvey was born on March 22, 1920 in Hamilton County to John R. “Ray” and Edna M. (Jones) Sundberg. He attended rural Polk County School and graduated from Polk High School in 1937. After graduation, he worked in Minnesota and Illinois until joining the U.S. Army on February 19, 1942 where he served in the Philippines until being honorably discharged on January 10, 1946. J. Harvey Sundberg and Irene Forss were united in marriage on February 6, 1944 at Calvary Lutheran Church at Swede Home.

After their marriage, they lived in Stromsburg from 1946 to 1951 where Harvey worked for the REA. They moved south of Polk and farmed for several years before moving to their farm north of Polk; where they farmed until their retirement in 1984. In 1985, they moved into Polk.

Harvey was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and then became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church when they moved in to Polk. He was very active in his church and in the community of Polk. Harvey was a member of the Polk American Legion Wilcox Post 160 and had been a past school board member.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of Polk; three sons-Douglas and Cathy Sundberg of Kerrville, TX; Lynn and Lynda Sundberg of Polk; Brad and Susan Sundberg of Polk; one daughter-Leanne and Kent Anderson of Paxton; two sisters-Delores J. and Dan Graves of Stromsburg and Ramona J. and Charles Stromberg of Lincoln; ten grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1975 and his mother in 1997.

Sylvia Sandell

Sylvia W. Sandell, 93, of Polk, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Monday, August 19th. Services will be Thursday, August 22nd at 2: 00 p.m. at The First Baptist Church in Polk with Rev. Roger Burke officiating. Burial will be in the Lindale cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Wednesday, August 21st from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Memorials suggested to The First Baptist Church or the Polk Library.

Sylvia was born on July 30, 1909 in Hamilton County to Frank and Hilda (Miller) Fossberg. She grew up in the Polk area and graduated from Polk High School in 1926. Sylvia attended Kearney State Teacher’s College and then taught country school for three years in Hamilton and Merrick County. On August 7, 1932 Sylvia W. Fossberg and Wallace E. Sandell were united in marriage in Polk. They made their home on the family farm west of Polk. In 1973, they retired from farming and moved into Polk. Wallace died on January 9, 1985.

Sylvia was baptized on May 22, 1921 and joined the First Baptist Church in Polk where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, was superintendent of the Sunday School, and was the church clerk for 35 years. Sylvia was also a member of Gideon’s International Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Polk Senior Center where she was still very active. In earlier years she enjoyed china painting and ceramics and throughout her life, she enjoyed reading.

Survivors include two sons-Neal and Ruth Sandell of Polk; Kent Sandell of Lincoln; and one daughter Diane and Roger Hanke of Palmer; one brother Gordon and Caryl Fossberg of Polk; one brother-in-law John Adams of Hastings; seven grandchildren-Kevin and Melody Sandell, Michel and Lee Peterson; Lynne’ and Cory Bergt, Cary and Becki Sandell, Jeffrey and Trudy Hanke, Jody and James Taylor, and Jason and Holee Hanke; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers-Gilbert, Kirmet, and Irven Fossberg; and four sisters-Mary and Elvira Fossberg, Maxine Borderson and Goldie Adams.

Franklin Herman Stettner

Franklin H. Stettner, 91, of Central City, died on Friday, August 9th at Long Term Care in Central City. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 14th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Jack Eske officiating. Burial will be in the Lindale cemetery near Hordville. Visitation is Tuesday, August 13th from 4 to8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Hordville Community Center.

Franklin was born on April 27, 1911 in Hampton to William and Wilhelmine (Peetzke) Stettner. He grew up on a farm near Hampton, was educated at the St. Peter’s Lutheran School in Hampton, and worked with his father on the farm. Franklin H. Stettner and Geneva M. Peterson were united in marriage on March 17, 1934 in Hordville. Franklin loved horses, and as a young man he broke many horses. They farmed in the Hordville area until moving to Central City in 1942. Franklin worked at the Grand Island Ordinance Plant, he farmed in the Central City area, and did carpentry work in the surrounding area. He retired from farming and carpentry work in the early 1980’s; but continued doing carpentry work until his health failed.

Franklin was confimed in April of 1927 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hampton. He later became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City. In addition to his love for his carpentry work, Franklin enjoyed fishing and had traveled to Canada on fishing trips. He also enjoyed having coffee with friends.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva of Central City; two daughters-Carole and Earle Hongsermeier of Grand Island; LuEtta Johnston of Plainview; one son-Bill and Georgia Stettner of Grand Island; one sister-Virginia Gilmore of Lee Summit, Missouri; one sister-in-law Joyce Stettner of Springfield, Missouri; six grandchildren-Dixie Johnston of Plainview; Tim Johnston of Osmond; Troy Johnston of Plainview; Sheri Thielbar of Oceanside, CA; Steven Stettner of Lancaster, PA; and Tina Stettner of Lincoln and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant granddaughter; one sister-Edna Rehrs, and two brothers Dean and Edgar Stettner.

Eleanor Mildred Gilson

Eleanor Mildred Gilson, 92, of Central City died at Long Term Care in Central City on Sunday, August 4th. Services will be Wednesday, August 7th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Ralph Supernaw officiating. Burial will be in the Bureau cemetery by Pierce Chapel Church near Clarks. Visitation is Tuesday, August 6th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Eleanor was born on November 5, 1909 in Nance County to Lyman and Ida Mae (Croy) Bloxom. She grew up in Nance County and received her education at Fullerton Schools. Eleanor M. Bloxom was united in marriage to Carmine Peck on June 21, 1933. They farmed east of Clarks and Eleanor received her certificate to be an insurance agent and worked at the Pharmacy in Clarks and later in the cafeteria at the Clarks School. Mr. Peck died on March 19, 1968. On January 29, 1970 Eleanor Peck and Eugene Gilson were married . They lived in Clarks and then moved to Central City in the early 1970’s. Mr. Gilson died in April of 1987. Eleanor continued to live in Central City and had been at Long Term Care since 1998.

Eleanor was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, she enjoyed doing hand work, going to the Senior Center in Central City until moving into Long Term Care, was a member of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle Club in Clarks, and the Quilting Club.

Survivors include two sisters- Minnie King of Manteca, CA and Mary Nelson of Central City; several nieces and nephews including her caretakers Jim and Karen Hansen of Hordville.

Eleanor was preceded in death by both of her husbands; four sisters-Gladys Rawlings, Emma “Lora” Bartumen; Ida “Ruth” Hansen; Rene Barnes; three brothers-Clair, Lewis, and Minor “Bill” Bloxom.

Florence Marie Downs

Florence Marie Downs, 74, of Central City died at Tiffany Square in Grand Island on Thursday, August 22nd. Memorial services will be Monday, August 26th at 11: 00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Florence donated her body to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for research. Interment will be at a later date at Westlawn Memorial Park in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice. There will be no visitation. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Florence was born on May 23, 1928 near Plainview to Albert and Sylvia (Hoke) Harvey. She attended District 16 School near Plainview, rural Antelope County school, and graduated from the 8th grade at District 78. She then entered high school in Brunswick and graduated from Oakdale High School in 1945. After graduation, she worked with her father on the farm until her marriage. On February 14, 1947 Florence M. Harvey was united in marriage to Peter W. Downs in Neligh. They lived in Tilden and Neligh until moving to Central City in 1959.

Florence did cooking at the Nite and Day Cafe, Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital, and for Central City Schools. Mr. Downs died on August 28, 1998.

Florence continued to live in Central City, and because of her failing health had just recently gone to live at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.

Florence was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City. She had belonged to a county extension club, she enjoyed her flower garden and had completed a course to become a Master Gardener, she loved to read, spend time with friends, and do handwork. Florence was devoted to her family and to God.

Survivors include three sons-Robert L. Downs of Phoenix; Larry L. and Sandy Downs of Grants Pass, Oregon; and Kenneth W. and Mary Ann Downs of Nevada, Iowa; two daughters-Carol M. Christensen and LaDonna Downs both of Grand Island; one brother-Kenneth L. Harvey of Lamberton, MN; 23 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded by her beloved husband; three brothers-Archie, Alvie, and Bernard Harvey; one son-in-law Dennis L. Christensen; one nephew; and two nieces.

Susan "Susi" Michele Davis

Susan "Susi" Michele Davis, 51, of Clarks, died Friday, August 30th at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City after a lengthy illness. Funeral services are Tuesday, September 3rd at 11: 00 a.m. at the Community Bible Church in Central City with Rev. Deverle Cooper officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, September 3rd at 3: 00 p.m. at the Maywood cemetery in Maywood, Nebraska. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the family. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Susi was born on June 8, 1951 in Oakland, California to William and June (Herr) Daniel. She grew up in Pleasanton, California and graduated from Amador Valley High School in 1969 and then attended college for two years in California. After completing her education, she lived and worked in California until her marriage. On October 1, 1985, Susan M. Daniel and Randy L. Davis were united in marriage in Pleasanton, California. They move to Maywood, Nebraska and lived there until 1987. They returned to live in California until 1990. At this time, they returned to Nebraska and lived in Central City and then in 1995 they moved to Clarks. Susi had worked at the Central City Mall, Pump ‘n Pantry, and from 1993 until 1999 she worked at Walmart in Grand Island. She was forced to stop working when her health began to fail.

Her greatest love was her family and she enjoyed helping her children with their school work. Susi enjoyed spending time with friends, cooking, reading, and making crafts.

Susi is survived by her husband, Randy of Clarks; one son-Bryan Davis at home; two daughters-Nicole and Erin Davis both at home; and two brothers-Kevin and Darrin Daniel both of Livermore, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister-Lynn Davis.

Doris Mary Aerni

Doris Mary Aerni, 85, of Central City, died Saturday, August 3rd, at Long Term Care in Central City. Services are Wednesday, August 7th at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City with Rev. Bradley Rick officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, August 6th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Homein Central City. Memorials are suggested to the church or to Long Term Care.

Doris was born on April 9, 1917 in Shelby to James and Martha (Sievert) Lockard. She grew up in Shelby, received her education there, and graduated from Shelby High School in 1935. Doris Mary Lockard and Leonard Frederick Aerni were united in marriage on June 22, 1936 in Clarinda, Iowa. They began their married life in Platte County in the Richland area where they farmed until 1945. They moved to Merrick County and farmed west of Central City. In 1964, they moved into Centra City and retired from farming in 1968. Doris worked at Woody’s in Central City; at the Farmer’s Daughter in Grand Island; Central Cafe; she worked for Chet Johnson at the malt shop; and Kate’s Root Beer.

Doris was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City; she was a kindergarten grandmother and a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, crocheting, working crossword puzzles, needlework, and making quilts. For many years, Doris did mission work by making health and school packets and quilts for World Relief.

Doris is survived by two daughters--Sonja Aerni of Lincoln; Janette Meyer of Livermore, CA; two sons-Kenneth (Pat) Aerni, Sr. of Central City; Ron (Jayne) Aerni of Sudbury, Mass.; one brother-Richard (Margie) Lockard of Columbus; three sisters-in-law Alice Aerni and Alvina Aerni both of Columbus; Betty Lockard of California; one brother-in-law Laverne Aerni of California; six grandchildren-Dag Richards, Ken Aerni Jr.; Jodi Giebler, Amy Goheen, Giselle Aerni, and Karen Aerni; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on October 13, 1984; her parents; four brothers-Milford, Leslie, Lyle, and August Lockard.

Frances Lenora Glad

Frances Lenora Glad, 78, of Lawrence, Kansas formerly of Polk and Central City, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas. Services will be Saturday, April 20th, 2002 at 1: 30 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Central City with Rev. David Hoesch officiating. Burial will be in the Swede Plain cemetery near Polk. The family will receive friends at the visitation on Friday, April 19th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Memorials are suggested to Nebraska Christian High School, the Evangelical Free Church of Polk or Central City and Gideon International.

Frances was born at home in Aurora on January 27, 1924 to F. Oscar and Esther Sabina (Gustafson) Elge. She grew up in the country and graduated from Aurora High School. Before her marriage, Frances worked as an accountant for Gold’s in Lincoln and at the Hamilton County Courthouse for Judge Ivan Bengtson. On April 15, 1950 Frances Lenora Elge and Gordon Edwin Glad were united in marriage in Lincoln. After their marriage, Gordon and Frances farmed near Polk. Gordon died October 29, 1996. After his death, Frances moved to Central City and then to Lawrence, Kansas and lived at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community to be near family.

Frances was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Polk where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for over 30 years and was a youth group leader. In 1996 when Frances moved to Central City, she transferred her membership to the Evangelical Free Church in Central City. Frances was also a member of the Gideon Auxiliary, a 4-H Leader, an avid gardener and enjoyed making homemade bread from the wheat they grew and she ground herself.

She is survived by two daughters-Laura and Gerald Sasek of Livonia, Michigan; Leanne and Leo Schlife of Lawrence, Kansas; one son-Mark and Rebbecca Glad of Prairie Village, Kansas; four grandchildren-Jacob Sasek, Katherine Sasek, Evie Schlife, and Jordan Schlife; two sisters-Anna Marie (Carl) Moore of Aurora; Lois (Dwight) Paschke of Marquette; and sister-in-law Georgene Elge of Aurora; brother-in-law Gilbert and Dorothy Glad of Central City.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband; one sister-Cecil Marion Elge; and one brother-Irving Elge.
