Elmer Galusha

Elmer Ellsworth Galusha, 89, a lifelong resident of Central City, died at Central City Care Center on Friday, March 9, 2001. Services will be Tuesday, March 13th at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Visitation is Monday, March 12th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial is in the Central City cemetery.

Elmer was born on August 4th, 1911 in Central City to David E. and Grace (Stull) Galusha. He graduated from Central City High School in 1931. On February 3, 1932, Elmer Galusha and Violet C. Sawyers were united in marriage in Central City. Elmer opened the Community Sale Barn in 1931. It was originally located north of Central City, then west of Central City, and has been at its present location for the last 65 years. Elmer learned the art of auctioneering from A.W. Thompson and conducted his first sale at the age of 17. This began his love for auctioneering and sale work. He loved working the sales and being with the people. Elmer also owned and operated Galusha Realty and the Community Service Station located on the Ormsby Road by the Sale Barn. Elmer turned over most of the operation of the Sale Barn to his children in 1977, but continued working with them and he had opened every sale until his health failed in the early 1990’s.

Elmer was a member of the Christian Church in Central City. He had been selected for Who’s Who in the American Association of Auctioneers, he was an announcer for Push Ball Derbys, but Elmer’s first love was his sale work and people. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, camping, doing the cooking while camping, and hunting, and his house dogs. Elmer was often heard to quote, "Everbody has their day."

Survivors include his wife, Violet of Central City; one daughter-Betty Jean and her husband Dwaine Nelson of Central City; two sons-Richard and wife Kathy Galusha and Harry Galusha both of Central City; seven grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother-Milton Galusha; and two great grandsons-Elliott and Mitchell Nelson.

Richard Kelly

Richard Paul Kelly, 81, of Central City, died on Sunday, June 10th at the Grand Island Veteran’s Home. Memorial services are Saturday, June 16th at 10 a.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Central City with Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will be in the Central City cemetery.

Richard was born on May 22, 1920 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Harry and Margaret (Harris) Kelly. After graduation from Johnstown High School, he attended college and then served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1944. On December 20th, 1943, Richard Paul Kelly and Faye A. Evans were united in marriage in Colorado. After completing his military service, Richard and Faye lived in California and in 1958, they moved to Columbus, Nebraska. Richard was a sales representative all of his work life. In 1991 he retired, and they moved to Central City.

Richard was a member the Central City Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and shared extensively in volunteer ministry with local congregation members.

Survivors include his wife Faye of Central City; two sons-Richard E. and wife Helen Kelly of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Patrick J. and wife Ruth Kelly of Columbus; one daughter-Cathy O. Kelly of Central City; 6 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter-Marilyn Carlson in 1998.

Eleanor Dankert

Eleanor Ida Louise Dankert, 78, of Central City, died on Thursday, June 21st at Merrick Manor in Central City. Services are Saturday, June 23rd at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City with Pastor Bradley Rick officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Friday, June 22nd from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Eleanor was born on April 30, 1923 in Ludell, Kansas to Mathias and Martha (Holle) Fleischacker. She grew up and received her education in the Ludell area. After completing her schooling, she helped her family on the farm. On June 2nd, 1946, Eleanor Fleischacker and Alfred H. Dankert were united in marriage in Ludell. They farmed near Worms, Chapman, and Archer. They moved to Central City in 1967. Alfred died on August 16, 1989. Eleanor moved into Merrick Manor in July of 2000.

Eleanor was a homemaker and partner with her husband in their farming. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Worms and then transferred her membership to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Central City, where she also was a member of the JOY Group. Eleanor enjoyed participating in activities and helping out at the Central City Senior Center. While living at Merrick Manor, she enjoyed taking part in the craft projects.

Survivors include two sons-Dennis Dankert of Hampton and Ron and wife Shelly Dankert of Central City; three daughters-Betty and husband Clinton Hensen of Central City; Delores "Dee" and husband Harold Sautter of Aurora; and Carol and husband Bill Wilcox of Central City; one sister-Irene Buk of Atwood, Kansas; 12 grandchildren-Dennis, Dana, and Matthew Dankert; Kristie Hensen, Jennifer Chapman, Dawn Dankert, Jason Sautter, Lisa Buller, Jana Sautter, Lori Sautter, Leah Wilcox, and Andy Wilcox; 9 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother Math Fleischacker, and one great grandson-Cameron Dankert.

Donald Bailey

Donald Eugene Bailey, 80, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Tuesday, June 19th. Services will be Friday, June 22nd at 2 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with Rev. John Eske officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, June 21st from 5 to 7 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Don was born on April 8th, 1921 to Delbert "Lee" and Gladys (Chesley) Bailey. Don grew up in the Fullerton area and graduated from Fullerton High School. After completing his education, Don entered the military during World War II and served at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. He met his future wife in Wisconsin. Donald E. Bailey and Helen M. Natwick were united in marriage on January 19, 1946 at Mt. Sterling, Wisconsin. They lived in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Don received his training in cabinet making. Don worked as a cabinet maker in Wisconsin until they returned to live in Nebraska. They moved to Central City in 1950 and Don began working for the Conoco Station and retired from there in 1982 after 32 years. Helen died on October 8, 1978. Don continued to live at home until moving to Long Term Care in Central City on January 22, 1997.

Don was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post #6, and continued his love of woodworking by making toys, trains, and many other items including wood candle holders for Grace Lutheran Church and the United Methodist Church in Central City and the aviary stand at Long Term Care.

Don is survived by one brother-Merrill Bailey and his wife Carol of Central City; sister-in-law Naomi Anderson and her husband Dale of Central City; seven nieces and nephews; 16 great nieces and nephews; and 6 great great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents

Geneva Carter

Geneva N. Carter, age 97, of Silver Creek, died at the Community Long Term Care in Genoa, Monday evening July 23rd. Graveside memorial services will be Saturday, August 11th at 2 p.m. at the Silver Creek cemetery with Rev. Beverly Minor officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Long Term Care in Genoa or the Silver Creek United Methodist Church. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva Naomi Carter was born on December 30, 1903, in Merrick County, to Eugene and Dolly (Hartman) Finecy. She attended school in Merrick County and married George Love Carter on December 20th, 1926 on a bridge between Polk County and Merrick County. Geneva and George farmed near Silver Creek. George died in 1977, and Geneva continued living on the family farm until moving to the Community Long Term Care in Genoa in 1996.

Geneva was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church of Silver Creek where she was a long time organist. She was very active on the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital Board and a self-taught artist.

Survivors include one brother, Cedric Finecy of Osceola, daughter-in-law Katherine Carter of Central City, four grandchildren; Mary Lou Van Diest and husband Brian of Earlham, IA, Fred George Carter and wife Jeana of Dallas, TX, Damon Carter of Durango, CO and Brett Carter of Brawley, CA and two great-grandchildren Rhiannon Van Diest and Katrina Van Diest both of Earlham, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband George in 1977, two sons Gail Dean and Lenis Gene, one grandson Justin Carter and several brothers and sisters.

Francis John Jindra

Francis John Jindra, 67, of Central City, died on Thursday, July 12th at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Services are Monday, July 16th at 10: 30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Sunday, July 15th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church with a 7: 00 p.m. Vigil Service. Memorials are suggested to the Long Term Care in Central City.

Francis was born on September 2, 1933 in Dwight to Frank M. and Mary T. (Crha) Jindra. His family lived in Dwight and Rogers and Francis attended rural Butler County School. In 1944, they moved to Central City and Francis graduated from Central City High School in 1951. After graduation, he worked for Carrol Christensen and then entered the military and served during the Korean War. After being discharged from the service, Francis returned to Nebraska and farmed in Belgrade from 1957 to 1958. In 1959, he joined in partnership with his father and brother, Gerald, and farmed with them in the Central City area. Francis and Gerald farmed together until Francis health failed. He had been living at Long Term Care in Central City.

Francis was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Central City and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed visiting museums, going to antique sales, fishing, and collecting tractors and caps.

Survivors include two brothers - Gerald Jindra of Central City and Joseph Jindra of Tacoma, Washington; one sister - Dorothy and husband David Bogus of Farwell; five nieces and five nephews; two uncles - Stan Crha of Bellflower, CA and Ed Jindra of Schuyler; five aunts - Ann Parolek and Rose Knepper both of Schuyler; Geraldine Jisa of Shelby, Antonette Seaman and Carolyn Backens both of Tomah, Wisconsin.

Francis was preceded in death by his father in 1980 and his mother in 1996.

Charles L. "Chick" Van Pelt

Charles Lee 'Chick' Van Pelt, 92, of Hordville, died on Saturday, September 11th at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services are Wednesday, September 15th at 11: 00 A.M. at Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville with Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, September 15th at 2: 00 P.M. at the Rose Hill cemetery in Palmer. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 14th from 5 to 8 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Cards may be sent to the Charles Van Pelt Family at 1507 17th Street, Central City, NE 68826. Memorials are suggested to the Merrick County Museum Building Fund.

Chick was born on February 20, 1912 near Archer to Milo and Zora (Badgley) Van Pelt. He attended Stovepoker Country School in Merrick County and the Gardner School also in Merrick County. On September 21st, 1936, Charles L. Van Pelt and Esther A. Simonson were united in marriage. They farmed in the Archer area until 1942, and then moved to the Loup Valley area near Palmer where they also farmed. In 1961, they moved into Palmer and Chick drove school bus and worked as school custodian. They moved to Hordville in 1968 and Chick worked as the Hordville School custodian until 1977. After retirement, he helped at the elevator and sold seed corn. He and Esther moved into Central City in 2003. Esther died on June 21st, 2004.

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons - Jay and Sondra Van Pelt of Hordville, Dan and Marlys Van Pelt of Bennington; six daughters - Mary and Glen Fesser of Morrisonville, IL; Nancy and Vonl Mattson of Grand Island; Carol and Stan Corbett of North Grafton, MA; Bonnie Jacobsen of Lincoln; Connie and James Taylor of McCool Junction; and Doris and Mike Cerny of Columbus; 25 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandson - Matthew Dale Jacobsen; two sons-in-law - Herb Brown, Jr. and Paul Jacobsen; three sisters - Viola Newlon, Erma Kucera, and Eugenia Chernoff; one half brother - Ogle Snyder; half sister - Hazel Long and her infant twin.

Oleata Faye Riblett

Oleata Faye Riblett, 55, of Central City, died on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Monday, September 20th at 11: 00 A.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joel Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, September 19th from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Oleata was born on July 26, 1949 in Central City to Glen F. and Ruth R. (Ruge) Brandenburg. She lived in Central City all of her life, graduating from Central City High School in 1967. On January 14, 1967 Oleata F. Brandenburg and Richard L. Riblett were united in marriage. They made their home in Central City. Oleata worked at Bethesda Care Center for a short time, before going to work for Bonnavilla Homes in Aurora for over 35 years.

She was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grand Island, was a co-leader for Girl Scouts for 13 years, she enjoyed crocheting, collecting owls and thimbles, and reading. Her greatest love was for her family and especially for the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard of Central City; her mother, Ruth Brandenburg of Central City; one son – Lonnie and Ramona Riblett of Clarks; one daughter – Deniece and Shayne Garretson of Granby, CO; five grandchildren – Christina Rhodes, Laurie Riblett, Re'na, Samantha, and Zachary Garretson; two sisters – LaDonna and Ron Powers of Grand Island; Vicki Burke of Grand Island; three brothers – Ron Hotchkiss of Lander, WY; Dennis and Kathy Brandenburg of Knights Landing, CA; and Alan and Kathy Brandenburg of Aurora; her father-in-law Irving Riblett of Marquette; and very special friends – Darlene Brewer and Germaine Lemkau of Aurora.

She was preceded in death by her father; her mother-in-law – Glenda Riblett; and a brother-in-law – Marlin Riblett.

Evelyn (Richards) Neumann

Evelyn A. (Richards) Neumann, 93, of Central City, died Monday, September 13, 2004 at the Central City Care Center. Funeral Services will be held at the Solt Funeral Home chapel, on Thursday, September 16, 2004, at 2: 00 P.M., with the Rev. Ray Norris officiating. Burial will be at the Polk cemetery, Polk, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September, 15th from 5 to 8 P.M.

Evelyn Ardyth was born on January 25, 1911 in Polk County near Stromsburg to Clarence and Myrtle (Waggner) Vincent. She attended and graduated from Stromsburg High School. In 1933, she married Dale Richards and they lived in Polk County and Merrick County for many years. To this union a son Dennis and a daughter Loritta was born. She lived in Clarks for 27 years to be near family and friends. In 1987, she married Ralph Neumann and moved to Central City where she resided before entering the Central City Care Center in 2001.

Evelyn attended the United Methodist Church in Clarks and was involved in a Bible study group for many years. She enjoyed the “Lucky Ladies Extension Club in District 50 areas. She helped with 4 H and other activities in the community. She loved crafts and doll making became a favorite pastime. Her hands were never idol, they were busy making quilts, lap throws, keeping scrapbooks or dressing a doll. She loved giving someone a part of her handy work. Among her talents she wrote poems depicting special events, an anniversary, graduation or a birthday. Through the years her love of family and friends never ceased.

Survivors include one son Dennis Richards and his wife Darlene of Loup City, one daughter, Loritta King and her husband Gerald of Kearney – Five grandsons: Michael Richards and his wife Larae of Comstock; Ronald Richards of O’Neill, ; Rodney Richards of Loup City; Jeffrey King and his wife Angie of Grand Island; and Bradley King and his wife Mitzi of Gladstone, MO; six great grand children; one brother-Richard Vincent of Central City; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and one sister-Lela Church.

Eleanor M. Mattson

Eleanor May Mattson, 88, of Central City, died at Tabitha Health Care on Saturday, September 11, 2004. Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 14th at 2: 00 P.M. at the Zion United Methodist Church near Archer with Rev. Rich Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday, September 14th from 9: 00 A.M. until 11: 00 A.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Eleanor was born on May 1, 1916, in Archer to Paul and Lydia (Retzlaff) Bonness. She graduated from Archer High School in 1916 and then attended Nebraska Central College in Central City. She taught for two years at District 3 in Merrick County, then continued her education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, and taught two more years at Milford. On June 8, 1941, Eleanor M. Bonness and Gerald E. Mattson were united in marriage at the Archer Evangelical United Brethren Church. They began their married life farming the Shoemaker place near Chapman and then moved to the Mattson home place in 1954. They farmed the home place until their retirement from farming in 1978. They continued to live on the farm until Gerald’s death on February 23, 2002, and then Eleanor had moved to Lincoln to be near her daughters.

Eleanor was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church, the Merry Wives Extension Club, she enjoyed cooking, sewing, canning, and freezing. Her greatest loved was to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three daughters – Nancy and William Provaznik of Omaha; Janet and Val Swanson of Lincoln; and Lea Ann and Bruce Alt of Waverly; one brother – Elmer “Ty” Bonness of O’Neill; eleven grandchildren – William J. and Kim Anh Provaznik; Richard E. and Jessica Provaznik; Mary Kay Provaznik; Steven D. and Tomoko Swanson; Jeff J. and Kirsten Swanson; Lisa L. Swanson; Mindy M. (Alt) and Chad Dustin; Erica A. (Alt) and Michael Volkmer; Anthony J. Alt; Russell A. Alt; and Jena L. Alt; and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers – Harvey, Arthur, Orville, and Quentin Bonness; and two sisters – Evelyn Bonness and Wauneta Frazier.

Faye Erickson

Faye Erickson, 96, of Windsor, Colorado, formerly of Central City, died on Sunday, September 26th, 2004, at Windsor Healthcare Center. Services will be set for a later date.

Faye was born on January 3, 1908, in Decatur, Nebraska to George and Elizabeth (DeWolf) McCleerey. On May 23, 1933, Faye McCleerey and Carl Erickson were united in marriage. They made their home in Central City until 1977, when they moved to Arizaona. They returned to Central City in March of 1989. Carl died on May 15, 1989. Faye had been living in Windsor for the last three and a half years.

Faye was a member of the Central City United Presbyterian Church and P.E.O. Her hobbies included bridge and reading.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Louise and Gary Vance of Fort Collins, Colorado; four grandchildren, Mark Erickson of Golden, Colorado; Andrew Vance of Livermore, California; Elsa Erickson of Centennial, Colorado; and Jeanette Errett of Fort Collins, Colorado; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son – David Erickson, and seven siblings.

Alistair C. Parlane

Alistair Colin Parlane, 56, of Columbus, left his earthly home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 30th at his home in Columbus. Memorial services will be conducted from the Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus on Monday, December 3rd at 7: 00 p.m. Memorials received by the family will be directed to the World Team/Church Projects in Vina del Mar, Chile.

Alistair was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on September 15, 1951, to William and Lilian (Conn) Parlane. Alistair grew up in Toronto and graduated from Sir Arthur Fleming High School in Toronto. After doing undergraduate studies at Guelph University, he graduated from Prairie Bible College in Three Hills, Alberta, C in April of 1976. An August 21, 1976, Alistair Parlane was united in marriage to Martha Johns in Central City. The couple began their missionary career in 1977, studying Spanish in San Jose, Costa Rica; where their son, Jonathan, was born. In December of 1977, they began a church planting ministry in Lima, Peru, with Regions Beyond Missionary Union; where Alistair worked with the youth and children. Their daughter, Amy, was born in Peru.

In June of 1982, Alistair and the family were transferred to Santiago, Chile, and spent three years there where Alistair continued as a youth and children’s pastor. They moved to Vina del Mar, Chile, where they continued a church planting ministry for seven years. Sons Daniel and Matthew were added to the family during this time.

The last four years of overseas ministry, Alistair was a math and science teacher at Puebla Christian Academy in Puebla, Mexico. Alistair had a gift for children’s ministry and continued that ministry during the past ten years in the states, working at Nebraska Christian Schools in Central City and finally serving as a bi-lingual para at Emerson Elementary School in Columbus. On July 2nd, 2004, Alistair became a citizen of the United States.

In addition to being a creative artist and a muralist, he was a train buff, and a lover of Gordon Lightfoot music. His passion was for the Latino people and they were always in his thought and prayers.

He will be sorely missed by his immediate family which includes his wife, Martha Parlane of Columbus; son Jonathan and Quynh of Bangladesh; daughter Amy and Bryan Lindner of Spokane, Washington; son Daniel and Melissa of Sagle, Idaho; and son Matthew of Columbus, Nebraska; his two granddaughters – Talia and Emily Parlane; and grandson Elijah Lindner. He is survived by three brothers – Ronald and Ann Parlane of Picton, Ontario; Brian and Anne Parlane of Three Hills, Alberta; and Andrew Parlane of Terra Cotta, Ontario.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dwayne O. Miller

Dwayne O. Miller, 78, of Polk, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2005; at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Lincoln. Funeral services will be Saturday, July 2nd, at 10: 00 A.M. at the Baptist Church in Polk with Rev. Roger Burke officiating. Visitation will be Friday, July 1st from 5 to 8 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Burial will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk.

Dwayne was born on May 4, 1927, in Polk to Orlie W. and Garnet R. (Samuels) Miller. He graduated from Polk High School in 1945. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served until being honorably discharged in August of 1946. Dwayne returned to Polk and farmed. On August 22, 1954, Dwayne Miller and Elaine Berg were united in marriage in Lincoln. They made their home near Polk, where they farmed. Dwayne retired in 1989; but continued to help on the farm until his health would no longer allow it.

Dwayne was a member of the Baptist Church in Polk, American Legion Post 160 in Polk, he served on the Polk School Board for two terms; and was actively involved in the community. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elaine of Polk; two sons – William Miller of Ellensburg, Washington; Byron and Kim Miller of Polk; one brother – Don and Wilma Miller of McAllen, Texas; one brother-in-law – Noel and Virginia Kealiher of York; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his father in 1977; his sister – Geraldine Kealiher in 1989; and his mother in 1995.
