Carolyn A. Anderson

Carolyn A. Anderson, 66, of Polk, died on Friday, April 18th at York General Hospital. Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 22nd at 2: 00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Polk with Revs. Anderson Kwankin and John Dale officiating. Burial will be in the Polk cemetery. Visitation is Monday, April 21st from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Carolyn was born on March 27, 1937 in Paxton to Isaac Lewis and Sarah Fern (Miller)

Draucker. They lived in Sarben until Carolyn was 8 years old and they then moved to Benedict. Carolyn graduated from Benedict High School in 1954 and from Kearney State College with a degree in education. She taught in Chappell, Cozad, and Mesa, Arizona. On January 30, 1966, Carolyn A. Draucker and Leonard F. Anderson were united in marriage in Benedict. They lived in the Polk area where they farmed and Carolyn also did some substitute teaching and had worked for the Nebraska Department of Tourism for the last seven years.

Carolyn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Polk and the UMW. She enjoyed traveling, playing the piano, music, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard of Polk; one daughter-Kerri and Jack Garrison of Kearney; two sons-Alan F. Anderson of Chandler, AZ and Brad L. Anderson of Lincoln; two grandchildren-Taylor and Connor Garrison; one sister-Wanda Draucker of Omaha; and two cousins-Jerry and Barbara Draucker and Carol and Kenny Most both of Ogallala.

She was preceded in death by her parents and half brother, Arnold Draucker.

Paul L. Wait

Paul L. Wait, 90, of Central City formerly of the Fullerton area, died on May 1, 2002 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Services are Friday, May 3rd at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Valjean Warman officiating. Visitation is Thursday, May 2nd from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Pierce Chapel cemetery near Clarks. Memorials are suggested to the Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church.

Paul was born on June 3, 1911 in Merrick County to Floyd A. and Jessie LaRena (Hober) Wait. Paul attended rural Merrick County School and Fullerton High School. On June 26, 1935 Paul L. Wait and Christena Mary Luft were united in marriage. In their early years of marriage they lived in Nance County where they farmed, raised livestock, and Paul worked for the Nance County Roads Department. They returned to Merrick County, where they farmed and raised livestock in the Fairview area, then to the Loup River area, and in 1949 they moved to their farm ten miles north of Central City. Christena died in October of 1989 and Paul moved to Fullerton in 1992. In January of 2000, Paul went to live in the nursing home in Palmer and then to the Central City Care Center.

Paul was a member of the Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church, he had belonged to the Merrick County Saddle Club, was named Stockman of the Year in the 1970’s, and his family received the AKSARBEN Pioneer Farm Family Award in 1997. One of Paul’s greatest enjoyments came from being neighborly. He also enjoyed breaking horses and ponies to be used for work, to drive, and to ride.

Survivors include two sons: Paul D. and Chris Wait of Fullerton; Floyd A. and Carol Wait of O’Fallon, Missouri; four grandchildren: Tracey and Brian Slagle of Central City; Patsy and Dan Egeland of Clarks; Marcey and Ron Rauert of Omaha; and Troy and Shannon Kemp-Wait of Plattsmouth; and four great grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife; one infant daughter-Patricia Pauline; and three sisters-Ruth Townsend, Pearl Ferguson, and Ruby Marlowe.

Frank Tagge

Frank L. Tagge, 65, of Central City died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital on Monday, Nov. 19th. Services will be Friday, Nov. 23rd at 10: 00 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Ellen Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation is Thursday, Nov. 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. Condolences may be sent to the Tagge family at www.soltfh.com.

Frank was born on April 16th, 1936 in Grand Island to Rudolph "Rudy" and Helen (Cain) Tagge. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1954. After completing high school, he worked for two years before entering the military. Frank enlisted in the US Army on February 17, 1956 and honorably discharged on February 16, 1959.

On December 6, 1958, Frank L. Tagge and Gloria Rieflin were united in marriage in Grand Island. Frank worked for Brown Auto in Grand Island and was transferred to Central City. He then purchased and operated Brown Auto in Central City. After selling the business, he worked for Tonniges Chevrolet in Osceola and then Grosshans, Inc. in Central City. Frank retired in 1998.

Frank was a member of the American Legion Post 6 in Central City, the Fraternal Order of Eagle’s, and the Platt-Duetsche Society in Grand Island. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, reading, fishing, boating, camping, and decorating for holidays.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Central City; two sons-Jeffrey Tagge of Apache Junction, AZ and Jon Tagge of Central City; one daughter-Jill and husband Rick Hahne of Hastings; three brothers-Jim Tagge of Grand Island; Robert and Peg Tagge of Denver, CO; and Gerald and Jean Tagge of Grand Island; three grandchildren-Tamara Anne Tagge; Kelli Christine Hahne, and Jake Jeffrey Hahne.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-Donald Tagge.

Leonard Rudolf

Leonard Rudolf, 91 years of age, of Central City, died on Saturday, May 17, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Graveside services will be conducted at the Westlawn cemetery on Tuesday, May 20th at 12: 00 P.M. by the Rev. James Wright. Vistiation will be at the Solt Funeral Home in Central City from 9: 00 A.M. to 11: 00 A.M. at the Solt Funeral Home. Memorials to the Central City Senior Center.

Leonard was born in Palmer, Nebraska on November 4, 1911 to Frank and Louise (Oxner) Rudolf. He attended school at District #58 near Archer and farmed until 1941. He was employed by the Grand Island Schools as a custodian. Later he worked for Union Pacific Railroad and then the Veterans Home where he retired do to ill health. He moved to Aurora and later to Central City. Leonard was an avid fisherman and hunter and also loved to dance.

He was a member of the Farm Bureau for twenty-eight years and a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles for over thirty years.

Survivors include: two daughters, Darlene Maahs of Aurora and Maxine Burke of Grand Island, one brother, Lawrence and his wife Evelyn of Chapman, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter. He was Preceded in death by one sister Mabel Stout and one brother Raymond Rudolf.

Harry A. Rice

Harry Andrew Rice, age 86, of Central City, died at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Wednesday, September 11, 2002. Funeral services are Monday, September 16th at 10: 30 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. W. Pat Moore officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, September 15th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery.

Harry was born on February 10, 1916 on the family farm in Prairie Creek Township of Merrick County to Andrew and Elizabeth (Mess) Rice. He attended District 44 Country School in Merrick County and graduated from Central City High School in 1934. A lifelong resident of Merrick County, Harry took over the family farm after his father’s death in 1957. He also cared for his mother until her death in 1973. Harry was a successful farmer and retired in 1979 after almost fifty years of farming.

Harry had been a member of the Prairie Creek Baptist Church. During his retirement, Harry enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and he had been to Europe and Asia several times. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the local coffee shops.

Harry is survived by his sister-Margaret Echtenkamp of Spencer, IA; a sister-in-law Claribel Overcash of Lincoln; two nephews-Steve Echtenkamp of Hammond, IN and Jim Echtenkamp of Spencer, IA; two nieces-Mary Sullivan of Lititz, PA and Carolyn Falk of Salado, TX; as well as many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-Keith Rice; and one brother-in-law Gilbert Echtenkamp.

Harriet Reina Pieper

Harriet Reina Pieper, 86, of Central City, died at Tiffany Square in Grand Island on Thursday, January 24th. Memorial services will be Monday, January 28th at 3: 00 p.m. at the United Congregational Church in Grand Island with Rev. Lonnie Logan officiating. A memorial visitation will be Sunday, January 27th from 4 to 6 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Interment will be in the Central City cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Donor's Choice.

Harriet was born on August 11, 1915 in Loup City to Harry A. and Reina C. (True) Wagner. As a young girl, her family lived in Arcadia, Grand Island, and Minden, and then in Central City where she graduated from Central City High School in 1932. In 1933, Harriet R. Wagner and Herman C. Pieper were united in marriage. They lived in Grand Island, Omaha, Central City, Elwood, and Holdrege. They purchased the grocery store in Harvard and owned and operated it for over twenty years. They returned to Central City in the mid 1980's. Mr. Pieper died on August 21, 1997. In May of 2001, Harriet moved to Tiffany Square in Grand Island.

Harriet was a member of the United Church of Christ. While living in Harvard, she was the first woman in Clay County to serve on the Harvard City Council, she volunteered with the March of Dimes, the P.T.A., and the Harvard Fun Festival. In addition to the love for her family, Harriet loved politics, playing cards, and bingo.

Survivors include her daughter Connie and her husband Norman Baum of Grand Island; seven grandchildren-Michael Birdsong of Central City; Amy and husband Michael Schutte of Juniata; Jay Daniel Owens; Angela and husband Kirby Sidlo of Astoria, Oregon; Chris Baum of Lincoln; David and Andrew Baum both of Grand Island; and five great grandsons.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters-Patsy Rae White and Alberta Gae Wagner; and three grandchildren-Martin Charles, Allison Joy, and Jeffrey Patrick.

Dale A. Anderson

Dale Arthur Anderson, 76, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City on Monday, March 3, 2003. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 6th at 2: 30 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with Sister Mary Arie and Rev. Charles Pollard officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, March 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Dale was born on August 7, 1926 in Manly, Iowa to Edwin O. and Mabel M. (Ewing) Anderson. His family moved to Central City while Dale was in grade school. He graduated from Central City High School in 1944 and then joined the U.S. Army. He served in the military from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed in Germany and Austria. On June 20, 1948, Dale A. Anderson and Naomi Pauline Mae Natwick were united in marriage in Glenwood, Iowa. The first several years of their marriage, Dale and Naomi lived throughout Nebraska with his work as a a Project Engineer for the State of Nebraska. In 1951, they returned to Central City and Dale took over the family business, Anderson Produce. He returned to work for the State of Nebraska in 1962 as a Project Manager and retired from this position in 1991. Dale was awarded the Smoothest Concrete Paving Project in 1972 and 1989. In addition to his work with the State Department, Dale enjoyed farming a small acreage that surrounded the Merrick County Fairgrounds.

Dale was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church where he had served on the Church Council for 13 years and had been the Vice Chairman and the Property Chairman. Outdoor activities that Dale enjoyed were camping, fishing, boating, and hunting with his family. He enjoyed Nebraska football, crossword puzzles, the "Word for the Day" puzzles, and reading.

Those surviving Dale are his wife Naomi of Central City; one daughter Sharon and Roger Brandes of Central City; two sons-David and Ellen Anderson of DeKalb, IL and Doug and Patricia Anderson of Aurora; seven grandchildren-Jarrod, Kane, Jess, and Caitlin Brandes; Lindsey, Shawn, and Stephen Anderson; one brother-Don and Sylva Anderson of Grand Island; one niece and two nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Anderson and his parents.

Dale was beloved by his wife and family and will be greatly missed. Blessed be his memory.

Nichole Anne "Niki" Mesner

Nichole Anne “Niki’ Mesner, 20, of Central City, died after a long battle with cancer, at the University Hospital in Omaha on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2002. Services are Saturday, January 5th at 2: 00 p.m. with Ellen Campbell officiating at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Friday, January 4th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Niki was born on November 23, 1981 in Grand Island to Michael E. and Donna M. (Williams) Mesner. She lived in Central City, Boston, and Grand Island; receiving her education in Grand Island and graduating from Central City High School. Niki developed cancer in May of 1997 and has been battling the disease ever since, having received a stem-cell transplant on December 20th. Niki was currently a consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Niki was baptized into the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island and was a member there, also. She attended the Friends Meeting House in Central City. She belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagle’s in Central City and enjoyed many crafts; including painting and counted cross stitch. Music was a love of Niki’s and she especially enjoyed doing karaoke. She was also a computer buff and movie buff. Niki’s family and friends were very important to her and their support throughout her illness gave her much needed comfort.

Survivors include her mother-Donna Petersen of Central City; her father and step-mother Mike and Glenda Mesner of Grand Island; two sisters Shanien and husband Mark Schmierer and Zandra Mesner both of Central City; her grandmother Selma Mesner of Central City and grandparents Don and Joyce Williams of Central City; step-grandparents Harold and Dorothy Jacobi of Wichita, Kansas; four step-brothers Kurt and wife Nadine Starkey of Ainsworth; Randy and wife Cindy Starkey; Allan and wife Vicki Starkey; and Loren Starkey all of Fremont; ten step nieces and nephews; four uncles-Cliff and Kathy Mesner of Central City; Howard and Jo Mesner of Medford, OR; Rusty Williams of Grand Island; and Todd and Rebecca Williams of Siloam Springs, Arkansas; two aunts-Trudy and Doug Soll of Grand Island and Brenda and Kirk Bergeron of Houma, Louisiana; many great aunts, great uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather Warren Mesner and step-grandfather Randall King.

Richard Meyers

Richard R. Meyers, 66, of Elkhart, IN died on November 9th at Elkhart General Hospital. Services are Thursday, November 15th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Visitation is Wednesday, November 14th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.

Richard was born on January 11, 1935 in Omaha, NE, one of eight children of Edward and Mary (Rodewald) Meyers. Richard attended school in Lincoln. and entered the US Army March 11, 1955 where he served in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged march 17, 1958. He married Linda Dohren of Winsner, NE on March 6, 1964. He started working for Champion Homes of York in the 1960’s and worked over twentyfive years working from1979 to 1985 in Central City at the Atlantic homes plant. Richard and Linda has lived in Elkhart, IN for the past fourteen years. Richard has worked for Dygert Custom Seating for the past nine years.

Survivors include his wife Linda Meyers of Elkhart, IN; two daughters-Ann Robinson of Lincoln and Saundra and Kevin Kroon of Lincoln; five sons-Curtis and Patty Meyers of Waverly; Richard and Sandy Meyers, II of Lincoln; Gregory Meyers of Eagle; Kent and Mona Meyers of Central City; and Lee Meyers of Elkhart, IN; 16 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; three brothers-Ernest and Betty Meyers and William and Amelia Meyers both of Lincoln; and Gordon and Rose Meyers of California, mother and father-in-laws Irene and Aubrey Dohren of Wisner, NE. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Shannon Meyers, two sisters; Minnie Keef and Charlotte Grotjan, and two brothers; Robert and Elmer Meyers.

Irene Justice

Irene Justice, 95, of Central City, died at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City on Tuesday, October 22, 2002. Services are Friday, October 25th at 2: 00 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Joy Savage officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation is Thursday, October 24th from 5: 00 to 8: 00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Long Term Care or to the United Methodist Church.

Irene was born on December 14, 1906 in Beaver Crossing to Lewis and Nettie (Snodgrass) Hansen. She graduated from Beaver Crossing High School in 1926 and attended the University of Nebraska Teacher’s College. After receiving her teaching certificate, Irene taught in rural schools near Beaver Crossing for four years. On August 1, 1928, Irene Hansen and Joe A. Justice were united in marriage in Blair, Nebraska. They moved to Central City in March of 1931, where they raised their family and owned and operated Justice and Locke Drug Company. Joe died on August 19, 1984.

Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City. She taught Sunday School in the primary grades and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was active in PTA work while her sons were in school. Some of her hobbies were writing poetry and keeping in contact with distant relatives, friends, former pupils, and remembering the sick through her letter writing.

Irene is survived by two sons-Jim and Barbara Justice of Central City; Dr. John L. and Barbara Justice of Columbus; four grandchildren-Jane and Todd Stuart; Dr. John M. and Katie Justice; Dr. Susan and Bruce Winters; and Joe M. and Hanane Justice; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother-Walter Hansen.

Betty Jane Reisener

Betty Jane Reisener, 78, of Clarks, died Thursday, October 9th, at Beverly Healthcare at Lakeview in Grand Island. Services will be Saturday, October 11, at 10: 30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clarks with Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be in the Chapman cemetery. Visitation is Saturday, October 11th from 8: 00 a.m. until service time at the church. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Jane was born on November 29, 1924, near Chapman to Walter A. and Bertha (Husmann) Green. She grew up in Chapman, attended District One Country School, graduated from Chapman High School in 1942, and then graduated from the Grand Island School of Business. On June 27, 1944, Betty Jane Green and Ira Dave Reisener were united in marriage in Chapman. They lived in Chapman until moving to Clarks in 1959 and owned and operated the Clarks Grain Company. Betty Jane was also bookkeeper for the Clarks Telephone Company for many years.

As a member of the United Methodist Church in both Chapman and Clarks, Betty Jane was involved in UMW, she was choir director, taught Sunday School, and had received her 50 year membership pin. Betty Jane enjoyed going to the Clarks Senior Citizen Center, she enjoyed gardening, baking, canning, and sewing. Betty Jane and Ira enjoyed traveling and fishing. After the death of her mother and her mother-in-law, she cared for her father and father-in-law until their death.

Survivors include two daughters-Jane and Paul Winfield of Arnold and Iris Hemmingsen of Grand Island; two brothers-in-law Ralph Reisener of Washington, IA and Eldon Reisener of Grand Island; six grandchildren-Scott and Christi Winfield; David and Suzanne Winfield; Brian and Vicki Winfield; Andrew Hemmingsen; Daniel and Stephanie Hemmingsen; and April and Dana Mora; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on August 28, 1986, and son-in-law Ronald Hemmingsen.

Raymond "R.C." Werner

Raymond "RC" Werner, 95, of Polk, died on Monday, September 1, 2003 at The Hearthstone in York. Funeral services are Thursday, September 4th at 10: 00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Polk with Rev. Chris Kester Beyer officiating. Burial will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Wednesday, September 3rd from 6 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk.

Raymond was born on January 19, 1908 in Deshler to John and Bertha (Paneitz) Werner. He grew up and received his education in Deshler. On February 14, 1932, Raymond Werner and Myrtle Liedke were united in marriage. They made their home south of Polk where they farmed until their retirement in 1955. They moved into Polk when they retired. Mrs. Werner died on May 16, 1985 and Raymond continued living in Polk until moving into The Hearthstone in 1997.

Raymond was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Polk, the Leiderkranz in Grand Island, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagle's in Grand Island. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include two sons-Roger and Donna Werner of Polk and Kenneth and Parma Werner of Aurora; and one daughter Ila Mae and Roger Campbell of Stromsburg; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, seven brothers and four sisters.

Verna P. Erickson

Verna P. Erickson, 98, lifelong resident of Hordville, died on Tuesday, October 02, 2007, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 6th at 2: 00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Hordville with Rev. Ralph Supernaw officiating. Visitation will be Friday, October 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Lindale cemetery near Hordville.

Verna was born on March 7, 1909, near Hordville to Victor and Emily (Nicholson) Erickson. Verna lived on the family farm near Hordville until moving into Long Term Care in Central City in 2002. She graduated from Hordville High School in 1927 and attended one year at Nebraska Central College before beginning her teaching career in rural Hamilton County school. In 1942, she went to the Hordville Public Schools and taught there until her retirement in 1974. In her 45 years of teaching, Verna taught English, Spanish, Home Economics, and was the school principal. Verna earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Nebraska Central College and her Master’s Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Verna was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Hordville where she was the pianist for many years, taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Women’s Mission Society. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher’s Sorority, the Nebraska Education Association, she enjoyed crocheting, quilting, tatting, oil painting, gardening, canning, and her flower garden.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sisters – Ruth King of Holdrege; Helen Solt of Central City; her brother – Bob Erickson of Hordville; one niece Kathy and Cliff Mesner of Central City; one nephew – Bob King of Holdrege; four great nieces and nephews – Ron, Mitch, and Ashley Solt and Amy Mesner.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters – Blanche Johnson, Margaret Larson, and Pearl White; and five brothers-in-law – Lennart Johnson, Adrian Larson, Orwin White, Ronald Solt, and Dwight King; and one nephew – Leslie V. Solt.

Charles Edward Lusk

Charles Edward Lusk, 89, of Central City, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at Aurora. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, April 1, at the United Methodist Church in Central City with the Revs. Debra Thompsett-Welch and Henrietta Stemley officiating. Graveside services will then be held at 2: 30 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at the Fairmont Public cemetery.

Alice (Launsby) Nelson Tatro, former York resident, died March 28, 2000 at Oakland Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 31, at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons.
