Elsa A. Wellman, 83, of Waco, died Thursday, March 30, 2000 at Seward. Memorial services are scheduled for 1: 30 p.m., Saturday, April 1, at St. John's Lutheran Church south of Waco with the Rev. Paul Kern officiating.
Laura Patchen
Laura B. Patchen died Thursday, July 12, 2001 at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Survivors include her son, Dale (Marilyn) Patchen of Phillips, Neb., and daughter, Mardelle (Donald) Doremus of Benedict. Funeral services are pending at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Frederick Lewis
York resident, 84
Frederick N. Lewis, 84, of York died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in York.
He was born Nov. 25, 1916, in LaBett County, Kan., to George and Myrtle (Neely) Lewis. He was a 1933 graduate of Bradshaw High school and served during World War II in the Army Air Force. Fred married
Irene Newton on Oct. 1, 1942, in Osceola. He farmed for several years, then was employed at Champion Homes in York for 25 years. He was a member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York, Masonic Lodge at Stromsburg and the York American Legion Post.
He is survived by his wife, Irene of York; one son, Richard (Sharon) Lewis of Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Diane (Stanley) Moore and Deborah (Dale) Sloan of York; five granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Marion (Betty) Lewis of York; nieces and nephews. Other survivors include Jack A. (Eileen) Newton of Portland, Ore., and Bill (Jan) Morris of Ponca, Neb.
His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, July 14, at Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Jo Harper officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, York. Memorials are suggested to East Avenue United Methodist Church.

Orville Dickey
York resident, 75
Orville E. Dickey, 75, of York, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at York.
He was born May 8, 1926, at Utica to Harrison and Ethel (Diedel) Dickey. He was a graduate of the Waco High School.
On May 5, 1954, he was married
to Wilma Wirthel at Grand Island. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of York and York Elks Lodge #1024. Orville was a World War II veteran and was an avid horse lover.
He worked for Kroy Manufacturing in York, retiring in 1990.
Survivors include his daughter, Jacqueline M. Dickey of York; sisters, Edna Haymart of Aurora and Elsie (Daniel) Sullivan of Waco; his sisters-in-law Alice "Petie" Aringdale of York and Helen Miner of Lincoln; and nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 21, at 10: 30 a.m., at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford. Burial will be at the Waco cemetery. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.
Irvin Hiebner
Henderson resident, 80
Irvin Hiebner, 80, of Henderson, died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at Lincoln.
He was born Aug. 15, 1920, near Henderson to Gerhard G. and Aganetha (Friesen) Hiebner.
He was married
to Martha M. Peters on Feb. 23, 1949, at Henderson. He was a farmer and a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church where he had served as an usher and was a past Board of Business member. He had been a Mennonite Disaster Service volunteer, also.
He is survived by his wife, Martha, of Henderson; daughters, Karen (Donald) Mierau of Henderson and Elaine (Randall) Sweigart of Saginaw, MI; son, Robert (Denese) Hiebner of Hampton; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, George Hiebner of Henderson; sisters, Agnes Hiebner and Katherine Epp, both of Henderson, and Elizabeth (John) Nunnenkamp of Cosby, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, at 10 a.m., at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Wednesday, at Henderson.

William "Bud" Schmeits
Goehner resident, 71
William "Bud" E. Schmeits, 71, of Goehner died at his home Friday, June 8, 2001.
He was born Oct. 3, 1929, at Spalding to John L. and Anna (Haun) Schmeits. Bud attended Spalding Academy and graduated with the class of 1948. He was married
to Ruth Cooper on May 3, 1954, at O'Connor, south of Greeley.
For a short time after his graduation from high school, Bud farmed with his father. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. After his return from the service in 1953, he returned to farming at Spalding, moving to Oxford in 1972 where he began his career in banking with the Security State Bank at Oxford. He also served the Erickson State Bank and First National Bank in Stanton. Bud and Ruth purchased the Red Barn at Goehner in 1982. They retired in 1990.
Bud was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Holmes Post #178, all of Beaver Crossing. For several years, he served on the Goehner Volunteer Fire Department and during the time he lived in Erickson, he was a member of the Lions and Elks Clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Schmeits of Goehner; sons, Bill (Mirna) Schmeits of Longmont, Colo., Terry Schmeits and special friend, Rhonda Thulin, both of York, and Tim (Teresa) Schmeits of Wayne; daughter-in-law, Cyndee Schmeits of Chester, Va.; seven grandchildren; brother, Joe (Irene) Schmeits of Primrose; sister, Veronica (Dale) Strimple of Fremont; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Frank and Madeline Cooper of Blair, Chuck and Marie Cooper of Chicago, Ill., and Eileen and Ed Kaiser of Davey; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Dominic "Nick", Joseph "Jody"; granddaughter, Ashley; two infant siblings; brothers, Fred and John; sisters, Marie Walsh, Francie Aguilar, Helen Schmeits, Clara Ketchmark and Elizabeth Ketchmark.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, June 11, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing with Father Maurice Current officiating. Interment was in the Mound Prairie cemetery, Goehner. Memorials have been established and may be directed in care of the family. Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Beaver Crossing, was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Brooke
York resident, 93
Alice Bernice Brooke, 93, of York, formerly of rural McCool Junction, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at York.
She was born Dec. 9, 1907 in rural northwest York County to John W. and Clara (Swanson) Carlson. She graduated from York High School in 1924 and then attended Peru Normal College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught three years at District #26 in rural York and then two years at Bradshaw. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in McCool, 4-Square Extension Club in York, the York Retired Teachers Association and the York Women's Club. On June 19, 1929 she was married
to Laverne D. Brooke at Lincoln.
She is survived by one son, Dick (Joyce) Brooke of Midwest City, Okla.; one daughter, Barbara (Chuck) Kaiser of York; two granddaughters, Barby (Mike) Jobe of Midwest City, Okla., and Kathy (Kurt) Polzin of Lincoln; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, June 11, at the Metz Chapel. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Visitation begins after 5 p.m., Saturday.

Clarence Collingham
Topeka, Kan., resident, 50
Clarence "Buster" A. Collingham, 50, of Topeka, Kan., formerly of Bradshaw, died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Topeka Hospital as the result of a motorcycle/car accident.
He was born Sept. 2, 1950 at York to Fred and Wanda (Reisinger) Collingham. He grew up in Bradshaw and graduated from Bradshaw High School in 1969. He married
Charlotte A. Crouch on June 5, 1976 at Bradshaw.
Collingham served in the U.S. Army. He worked for Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Topeka for 18 years and was active with the Shawnee County 4-H program.
Survivors include his parents, Fred and Wanda Collingham of Bradshaw; wife, Charlotte of Topeka; four daughters, Amy, Dawn and Christy Collingham and Carri Nemechek, all of Topeka; four sisters, Diana Mills of Glasco, Kan., Waunita Collingham of Neb., Teresa Endorf of Alexandria, and Brenda Wolfe of Bradshaw; and one grandson of Topeka.
Graveside services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 12 at Memorial Park cemetery in Topeka. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clarence Collingham Memorial Fund, which has yet to be designated, and may be sent in care of the Davidson Funeral Home.

Robert Frei
South Dakota resident, 79
Robert H. Frei, 79, of Wagner, S.D., died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner.
He was born Feb. 4, 1922, at Wagner, S.D., son of Walter H. and Hazel (McVicker) Frei. He graduated from Wagner High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II from 1942 until 1945. Bob graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1946.
He married
Betty Laird in Omaha on July 12, 1946. He started his career as a banker with his father in 1946 at the Commercial State Bank in Wagner and worked there until he retired in 1976.
Bob was active in community affairs and was a member and past president of the S.D. Bankers Association, Rotary, and Wagner Chamber of Commerce. He served as alumni president of USD in 1966 and as president and chairman of the board of Commercial State Bank. He was also a member of the El Riad Shrine, Masonic Lodge, and was on the board of directors of the Crippled Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was a United Methodist Church trustee, commander of the American Legion Greer Post #11 and was an Eagle Scout. He was also the Honorary Wagner Labor Day Parade Marshall in 1986.
Survivors are his wife, Betty of Wagner; son, Robert L. (Jill) Frei of Wagner; two daughters, Bonnie (Dave) Birger of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Barbara (LaVerne) Hrdlicka of York; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Barbara Bramblett of Osage, Neb.; and two sisters, Betty Kittelson of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Eleanor (Bob) Walkney of Asheville, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William H. Frei; great-grandson, Logan Frei, and a sister, Helen Pottschmidt.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Wagner. Burial will be in the Z.C.B.J. cemetery, rural Wagner, with military honors. Visitation will be held Monday from noon until 5: 30 p.m. at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.
J. Norman Lucas
Holdrege resident, 81
Jerome Norman Lucas, 81, of Holdrege died Sunday morning, May 27, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital of Kearney.
He was born April 14, 1920, in Browerville, Minn., the youngest of four children born to Joseph and Elizabeth (Motzko) Lucas. He grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., and attended school there.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an airplane maintenance technician serving primarily in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a staff sergeant.
While Norm was stationed at Independence, Kan., he met Lucy Bohr. They were married
Nov. 6, 1943, in Cherryvale, Kan., and to this union four children were born, Nancy, Donald, Michael and Mary. Following his discharge from the service, Norm worked for the Standard Oil Pipeline in Independence. He was later transferred to Deshler, Neb. In 1954 they moved to Holdrege to operate the Tower Drive Inn Theater. He was also employed by Standard Chemical and Feeds and C. S. Nelson Furniture Co. of Holdrege. In the early 1960's he and Bob Stolz opened up Bob and Norms Quality Floor in Holdrege where he worked until his retirement.
Norm was a member of the Elks Lodge #2062, serving as Exalted Ruler for two terms, the American Legion Post #66, VFW, Eagles and Knights of Columbus. He was founder of the Civil Air Patrol there and a longtime member of All Saints Catholic Church, serving as a trustee member at one point.
Survivors include his wife, Lucy of Holdrege; two daughters, Nancy (Robert) Slocum of Kearney and Mary (Terry) Gugle of Manhattan, Kan.; two sons, Donald (Kay) Lucas of North Platte and Michael (Beth) Lucas of York; six grandchildren; one sister, Lee Lamusga of Minneapolis; two sisters-in-law, Pat Lucas of San Diego, Calif. and Mary Lucas of Minneapolis; four brothers-in-law, George (Juanita) Bohr, Francis (Helen) Bohr, James (Carl) Bohr and Nickolas (Karen) Bohr, all of Independence; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Everett and Lambert Lucas; and wo brothers-in-law, Al Lamusga and Elmer Bohr.
Lucas will lie in state at the Nelson-Harris Funeral Home of Holdrege on Wednesday, May 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established in his memory. The Nelson-Harris Funeral Home of Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
