Geneva resident, 75
Frank E. Engle, 75, of Geneva, died Thursday, April 12, 2001 at Lincoln.
He was born July 11, 1925 to Constantin and Emma (Svehla) Engle.
Survivors include three brothers, George A. (Phyllis) Engle and Harold G. (Helen) Engle, both of Geneva, Willis L. Engle of Salina, Kan.; four sisters, Eleanor R. (Arlan) Becker of Exeter, Ruth D. (Delbert) Sorge of Geneva, Anna M. (Joe) Vnoucek of Friend, Mary L. (Ronald) Uldrich of Milligan; nieces and nephews.
Services are 10: 30 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Visitation begins at 3 p.m. Sunday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Graveside services will be held at the Geneva Public cemetery at Geneva. Memorials to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Geneva Rescue Unit.

John Toews
York resident, 88
John D. Toews, 88, of York, died Thursday, April 12, 2001 at York.
He was born Sept. 15, 1912 at Mead, Kan., to Gerhard and Katherine (Steingard) Toews. He married
Mildred Otte on Sept. 15, 1933 in Henderson. John was a carpenter, having worked for Wolvin Construction and Mead Lumber in York before retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred of York; daughters, Evelyn (Merlin) Volkmer of Shickley, and Martha Toews of Lincoln; one son, Allen (Kathleen) Toews of Warrenton, Va.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers and one sister.
Services are 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in York. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Metz Mortuary in York, which is in charge of arrangements.
Aurelia Alcorn
Stromsburg resident, 92
Aurelia Katherine Alcorn, 92, of Stromsburg, formerly of Shelby, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Midwest Covenant Home.
She was born March 5, 1909, in rural Polk County to Carl and Rosalia (Latzel) Albers. She was educated in the Shelby schools, graduating in 1927. She was married
that year to Roy Elmer Lyon in Marysville, Kan. He died in Shelby on May 13, 1937. On Sept. 29, 1939, she married
William James Alcorn in Columbus. They spent most of their married
lives in Shelby except for brief periods in Omaha and Columbus. During this time, she worked as a waitress, cashier, and bank teller. She was a long-time employee of Bernt's Cafe until her retirement.
Survivors include her daughter, Palmetta (Lyon) Tindall of Osceola; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; one brother, Fred Albers; and one sister, Erma Munksgard.
Services were at 2 p.m., Friday, April 13, at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola with the Rev. Keith Brozek officiating. Burial was in the Shelby cemetery.
Joseph Vrbka
Utica resident, 79
Joseph A. Vrbka, 79, of Utica died April 14, 2001.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1921. He graduated in 1938 from Utica High School and was a World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He farmed in the Utica area a number of years and was then employed with the State of Nebraska Department of Weights and Measures until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of the Utica American Legion Post #49 and of St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Utica.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Eva (Rohren) Vrbka; sister, Frances Leinberger; brothers, Linus and Raymond Vrbka.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen Vrbka of Utica; sons, Rodney (Barb) Vrbka of Tecumseh; Alan (Sherry) Vrbka of York; daughters, Shirley (Dave) Smith of Cortland, Lisa (Dave) Clabaugh of Beatrice; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Regene (Lyle) Beggs of Dorchester; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from noon to 8: 30 p.m. on Monday, April 16, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward. A Rosary prayer service will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Utica. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 18, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Utica. Celebrant will be Father Maurice Current. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic cemetery in Utica with full military honors. Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice in care of the family.
Nellie Douglas
Hastings resident, 80
Nellie May Douglas of Hastings died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at her home.
She was born Jan. 27, 1921, in York County to William H. and Grace (Smail) Galaway. She was married
on May 20, 1941, to Joseph H. Douglas. She graduated from McCool Junction High School. She was employed by Social Services and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hastings and the VFW Auxiliary.
She was survived by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Carol Douglas-Shepherd of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers, Russell Galaway of McCool Junction and Joseph Galaway of Fairmont; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Earl Higgins officiating. There will be no visitation. Friends may call at Brand-Wilson Mortuary on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to sign the book. Memorials may be sent to Mary Lanning Hospice.
Lois Friesen
Henderson resident, 82
Lois Mae Friesen, 82, of Henderson died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at the Henderson Nursing Home in Henderson.
Lois was born March 4, 1919, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Steward and Elsie (French) Musser. She was a graduate of Lincoln High in Lincoln in the class of 1936.
On Dec. 11, 1938, she was married
to Frank A. Friesen in Gretna. To this union three children were born, Karen, Donald and Dona. They lived in Lincoln, York, Geneva, Falls City and Denver. In 1977, they returned to Henderson to own and operate the dry goods store in Henderson until August, 1990, when they retired. Frank died Aug. 29, 1996.
She was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank, and infant son, Donald.
Survivors include her daughters, Karen (Paul) Reed of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Dona (Donald) Rose of Chrystal River, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson with the Rev. Weldon Martens officiating. Burial will be in the Friesen cemetery near Henderson.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 3 to 5 pm., and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Kohler Mortuary in Sutton. Family members will be present from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association.
David Nelson
York resident, 59
David R. Nelson, 59, of York died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in York.
He was born Dec. 22, 1941, in York to Gothard and Martha (Lundgren) Nelson. He was a 1959 graduate of York High School and served in the U.S. Army. He married
Sharon K. Jones on March 11, 1961, in Anaheim, Calif. She preceded him in death in 1996. David sold wholesale candy and tobacco for several companies. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York, the American Legion and the York Country Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Laurie Nelson of York and Jennifer Nelson of Sacramento, Calif; one son, David L. Nelson of York; grandsons, David and Dustin Nelson; granddaughter, Amanda Nelson; sisters, Pauline Smith, Helen (Don) Lulow and Orpha Friesen, all of York; brothers, Marvin (Gwen) Nelson of Fairbury, and Joe (Irene) Nelson of Shingle Springs, Calif.; sister-in-law, Joanne Nelson of San Jose, Calif.; special friends, Jerry and Marcia Byrnes of York and Margaret Jones of York.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sisters, Hanna, Ella, Laura and Ruth; brothers, Dale and Harold; and half-brother, Conrad.
Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Friday, April 13, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Dick Woolard officiating. Interment will be in the Waco cemetery, Waco. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.
Athla Tankersley
Wyoming resident, 85
Athla Tankersley, 85, of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Benedict, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Cheyenne.
She was born Aug. 6, 1915, in Benedict to Karl and Idilla Howard. She graduated from Benedict High School and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She was a member of First Christian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Writer's Guild, Quilting Club, Genealogy Society, and Historical Society. She was a volunteer in the family history section of the Laramie County Library.
She is survived by daughters, Kay Hay of Greeley, Colo., and Vicki Brown of Cheyenne, Wyo.; sisters, Maxine Baker of Mesa, Ariz., and Margie Holmes of Gilbert, Ariz.; stepson, Larry Tankersley of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Vern Lichliter and Oren Tankersley; one son; one brother; and two sisters.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 16, at 2: 30 p.m. at the Greenwood cemetery in York with the Rev. John Dale officiating. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of the arrangements.
