Craig Alan Tracy, 53, of Winter Park, Fla., died Jan. 4, 2002.
He was born Aug. 16, 1948, in Lincoln to Herbert and Delores Tracy. He graduated from York High School in 1966. He joined the Navy after graduation, serving in the Sub Corps until 1969.
He married
Lynette Porter in Kearney in October of 1970 and moved to York to work with his father in the sheet metal business.
In 1979, he moved to Winter Park, Fla., and worked for Disney World for 10 years and then for Universal Studios Park until the time of his death.
Survivors include his parents of York; children and grandchildren, Tira (Jeff) Poole, Maranda, Magen, Kelcie and Jaedyn of Oviedo, Fla., and Judd (Beth) Tracy, Gregory and Elaine, of Winter Park, Fla.; brothers, Mike (Jan) Tracy of Houston, Texas, and Bruce (Margaret) Tracy of York; sister, Jodee (Steve) Just of Funk, Neb.; and several beloved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at the First United Methodist Church on Seventh and Burlington in York, at 11 a.m. No graveside services will be held. Memorials may be made to the Blue Valley Community Action or the charity of the donor's choice.
Barbara L. Kelley
Lincoln resident, 71
Barbara L. Kelley, 71, of Lincoln died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Lincoln following a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 15, 1930, at Ironton, Mo., to Raymond S. and Birdie Mae (Henderson) Brown.
Barbara was a graduate of York High School and graduated from Culinary School. She was married
to Jewell R. Kelley Jr. at York on June 1, 1958. Barbara was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church of Lincoln. She worked as a cook at the Pi Beta Phi house at UNL and then was the chief dietitian at the Lancaster Manor for over 20 years. Later she was the dietitian at the Malone Center Day Care and served as a board member and Community Outreach Coordinator for the Malone Center. She was also a member of the Lincoln Police Advisory Panel and had been active in the National Council of Negro Women, Lincoln Chapter.
Survivors include her daughters, Janice Elaine and Prim Battle of Lincoln and Stephanie Bair of Denver, Colo.; son, Charles and Donna Baker of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Preceding her in death were her husband Jewell in 1991, her parents, stepfather Lee Green, son Sherdal Lewis, and brother Arvid Brown.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Quinn Chapel AME in Lincoln with the Rev. Dr. Percel Hector. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in York. Visitation will begin in York at Metz Mortuary on Monday at 5 p.m. and two hours before service time at the Quinn Chapel. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.
Ella "Jo" Leif
Exeter resident, 77
Ella "Jo" L. Leif, 77, of Exeter, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Geneva.
She was born Jan. 23, 1925, at Plymouth, the daughter of Frank and Bessie (Soldat) Cerveny.
Survivors include her husband, William Leif of Exeter; son John (Karen) Leif of St. John's, Minn.; daughter Patricia (Bruce) Rocole of Exeter; sister, Mildred Casey of Appleton City, Mo.; and four grandchildren, Andrew and Matthew Rocole and Monica and Karen Leif.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. A Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3, at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., on Sunday, at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at the Exeter cemetery, with Father Kenneth Borowiak officiating.
Berdine Piper
Former Stromsburg resident, 86
(Charlotte) Berdine Piper, 86, of Burwell, formerly of Stromsburg, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Burwell.
She was born Nov. 28, 1915, on a farm near Brashaw to Edgar and Ina (Bolton) Farley. She was baptized in the English Lutheran Church in Benedict and graduated from Benedict High School in 1933.
She married
LeRoy Piper on Aug. 14, 1934. The couple farmed near Polk until 1940. They moved to a farm near York and lived there until 1955; then moved to Delta, Colo., and lived there until 1960. They moved back to Stromsburg where they operated the Piper Construction Company. After LeRoy's death in 1971, Berndine moved to Burwell to be near her son and his family.
Survivors inclue her son, Lester(Connie) Piper of Burwell; brother, Homer (Virginia) Farley of Osceola; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, at Metz Mortuary Chapel in York. Burial will be at the Arborville cemetery near Polk. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Friday, at the mortuary. Memorials may be sent in care of the family.
Ann K. Kuhn
Waco resident, 77
Ann K. Kuhn, 77, of Waco died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at York.
She was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Polk County, to Gustav and Betsy (Berglund) Eklund.
She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church south of Waco. She enjoyed being with her family, camping and crocheting. On Oct. 14, 1955, she was married
to Lauren H. Wiese at Stromsburg. On March 5, 1971, she was married
to Don Kuhn at Seward.
She is survived by her husband, Don, of Waco; one son, Eugene (Susan) Wiese of Beaver Crossing; two daughters, Deb (Todd) Bauer of Geneva and Janice (Dallas) Haynes, Jr., of Raymond; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Iola Hines of York and Esther (Elmer) Hanson of Kasson, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, at St. John's Lutheran Church south of Waco with the Rev. Paul Kern officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with memorials being directed to the Arthritis Foundation. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in York.
Melvin Wayne Romohr
Gresham resident, 81
Melvin Wayne Romohr, 81, of Gresham died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in York.
He was born March 29, 1920, to Mark A. and Stella Romohr in their farm home near Gresham. He started farming as a teenager during the Depression while his father worked for the Federal Agricultural Service, AAA, in York. He graduated from Gresham High School in 1937 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in December of 1941. He competed pilot training in 1942 and spent the majority of his service in World War II flying supply and troop transports in North Africa and Italy, retiring as a captain in 1946.
Melvin returned to farming after the war and married
Maxine Sapp of North Platte in 1951. Their union was blessed with six children. He farmed until 1982, retiring to a home in Gresham. He and his wife spent countless hours during their retirement, preparing, planting, and caring for wildlife habitat acreages on their farms.
Melvin joined the Davidson/Neujahr Post #13 of the American Legion in Gresham after WWII and served as its Commander. He served terms on the local school and co-op boards and the Gresham Housing Authority. He also was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of the Stromsburg Masonic Lodge #126, and a past member of the Sesostris Shrine in Lincoln.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gladys Paulick; and one son, Scott.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine of Gresham; brother, Mark (Jennie) Romohr of Gresham; one sister, Esther Schultz of Lincoln; four sons, Monte (Carolyn) Romohr, Arnold Romohr, Matthew Romohr, all of Gresham, Kim (Beth) Romohr of Randolph; one daughter, Melanie (Joel) Honegger of Lake Zurich, Ill.; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at the Gresham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Noel DeKalb officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday evening, 5 to 8 p.m., at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be at Cedar Lawn cemetery in Gresham. The family suggests memorials to the Cardiac Rehab unit of York General Hospital.
Joseph Carlton Berry
York resident, 68
Joseph Carlton Berry, 68, who was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Aroda, Va.; who found his calling in education and the fine arts at Bridgewater College (Va.); who began the first ten years of his teaching career at Orange (Va.) High School; who struck out for Nebraska's big skies and wide-open plains in a Dodge Dart in 1964; who earned his Master's degree in education at the University of Nebraska; who directed the choir at Southminster United Methodist Church in Lincoln; who fell in love with and married
one of the choir members in 1967; who moved to York for a teaching job that would last 32 years and span three generations of York High students; who had three children that together inherited his love of teaching and literature, music and art, and writing and photography; who was a member of and choir director at East Avenue United Methodist Church; who spent the last two years of his career at York College, helping aspiring teachers to understand the substance, not just the theory, of teaching; who directed dozens of plays and musicals for the Yorkshire Playhouse; who mentored many student teachers, a number of whom grew from apprentice to friend; who demanded that his students engage and use their minds; who couldn't abide that which is cliche'd, trite, or maudlin; who appreciated the difference between irony and sarcasm; whose affection for the short stories of William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor led many of his students to wonder if Mr. Berry had a morbid streak or if it was just that strange Southerner in him; who was a wonderful cook who believed in adding Jack Daniels to icing to give it just the right tang; who was a friend and colleague to many -- died of cancer on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his children, Kathryn, Christopher and Gwyndolyn; his four brothers, Howard, David, Robert and Norman, and their wives; his sister, Mildred; his sister-in-law, Marge; and his son-in-law, Randy Folts.
He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin; his mother, Edna; and his brother, Douglas.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at East Avenue United Methodist Church in York. Floral arrangements should be sent to Metz Mortuary. All gifts and memorials should be directed to York High School in care of Scott Koch.
Sheldon O. Price
New Mexico resident, 93
The Rev. Dr. Sheldon O. Price, 93, died Jan. 18, 2002, in Roswell, New Mexico.
He was born Aug. 16, 1908, in Thayer, Neb. He graduated from York High School in 1925. Dr. Price graduated from Hastings College in 1930, and married
Kathryn Louise Reed on June 2, 1931. While attending Omaha Theological Seminary he served in the National Ministry Field in Colorado and Nebraska. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in May 1935 by the Nebraska City Presbytery.
Dr. Price served as a pastor at Mt. Scott Presbyterian Church, Portland, Ore.; First Presbyterian Church, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; and First Presbyterian Church of Wenatchee, Wash. During WWII, Dr. Price served as a Navy chaplain with the Seabees in the Pacific. In 1967, Dr. and Mrs. Price moved to Santa Fe to be the directors of Plaza del Monte, a Presbyterian retirement complex. The Prices retired and moved to Roswell, N.M., in 1977.
Dr. Price was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; his daughter, K. Louise Crooks; and his brother, Lee Reginald "Reg" Price, who lived in York.
He is survived by his sister, Joan E. (Jack) Stuckey of Lexington, Neb.; a daughter, Joan E. (Jerry) Bellows of Moraga, Calif.; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Wenatchee, Wash., and on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Roswell.

Ann K. Kuhn, 77, of Waco died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.
Lydia C. Johnson
Osceola resident, 92
Lydia C. Johnson, 92, of Osceola, formerly of York, died at Good Samaritan Center in Osceola on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002.
She was born on Oct. 7, 1909, in Osceola, the daughter of Oliver and Phenia (Hanks) Griffin. She graduated from Osceola High School in 1928. She was married
to Delmer K. Johnson on March 18, 1929, at Osceola.
In addition to being a housewife, she was employed at Annie Jeffrey Health Center in the laundry department.
Surivors include one son, George Johnson of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer, on Oct. 24, 1973; daughter, Joan Richards; brother, Walter Griffin; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola with Pastor Clifford Roper officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola. Interment will be in Osceola cemetery.
Norena E. Rich
York resident, 90
Norena E. Rich, 90, of York died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at York.
She was born Jan. 12, 1912, near Waco to Henry and Frieda (Reisner) Epke. Norena was married
to Louis W. Rich on Sept. 1, 1935, at Waco. They moved to Missouri where they lived until 1948 when they returned to the Gresham area to farm. They moved to Aurora in 1957 and they owned and operated the Rich Variety Store until 1975 when they retired to York. Norena then worked for a time at the Hesteds in York.
She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of York.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia, and her husband Dale Opfer of York; two grandsons and wives, Ross and D. Dee Opfer of DeSoto, Kan., and Kurt and Dawn Opfer of Bradshaw; great-grandchildren, Kristin, Stephen and Michael Opfer, all of Bradshaw, and Brennan, Bret Lyn and Brock Opfer, all of De Soto, Kan. Also surviving are her sisters, Elta Davis of York, Paula and Al Behmer of Lincoln and Dama and Julian Lind of York; brothers, Walter Epke of St. George, Kan., Wilbur Epke of York and Ralph and Ardis Epke of York, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Louis in November of 1992; two sisters, Alma Epke and Anna Ranes; and a brother, Rudolph Epke.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at York with the Rev. Art Brinkmeyer. Memorials may be directed to the church or the family's choice. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Visitation will begin Sunday at 5 p.m. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Werner J. Bartsch, 88, of Sioux Falls, S.D., died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002. He was born Nov. 6, 1913, the son of Gustav and Anna (Pliefke) Bartsch.
Survivors include a brother, Wilmar (Fern) Bartsch of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister, Malinda Jahnke of Graceville, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Iola (Erwin) Bartsch of Johnson, Minn.
Alice Schoch
California resident, 90
Alice Schoch, 90, died Feb. 15, 2002, in San Diego, Calif. She was born on Jan. 8, 1912, to Nellie and John Green in York.
She was married
to Jerry Schoch. They had two sons. She lived most of her married
life in San Diego.
She is survived by one son, Jay Schoch of San Diego; a nephew, Floyd (Jackie) Mason of Arizona; two nieces, Joyce (Don) Maronde, Barbara (Dean) Wilcox of York; and several other nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son; and three sisters, Eva Mason, Marie Green and Helen Woodard.

Helen M. Hurst
Fairmont resident, 89
Helen M. Hurst, 89, of Fairmont, the widow of Harold H. Hurst, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, in Fairmont.
She was born to Frank and Edith (Klein) Ritchey on Jan. 26, 1913, at Fairmont.
Survivors include her son, Francis "Hub" Hurst of Fairmont; brother, Merlin Ritchey of Valentine; sisters, Merna Price of York and Bernice Geis of Aurora; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are being held at 2 p.m., today (Monday, Feb. 18) at Fairmont Community Church, Fairmont. There will be no public visitation. Memorials may be sent to the Helen Hurst family. Private graveside services will be held at Fairmont Public cemetery, Fairmont. The Rev. Brian Kottas is officiating.
