Evelyn Korbelik

York resident, 86

Evelyn L. Korbelik, 86, of York died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Lincoln.

She was born March 19, 1914, at Beatrice to Fernando and Grace (Hileman) Hoyle.

Evelyn graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy, being one of the first female pharmacists in the state. During her career, Evelyn worked for a Lincoln hospital, A & T Drug and Hildebrand Pharmacy in York until retirement.

She married Edwin Taylor in 1939. He died in 1945. She married Raymond Korbelik on Jan. 1, 1951, in Concordia, Kan. Raymond died in November of 1989. Evelyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York. She volunteered teaching G.E.D. classes and was an avid bridge player.

She is survived by grandchildren, Tracy (Tim) Coats of Nashville, Tenn., Christopher (Wendy) Taylor and Patrick Taylor, both of Washington, D.C.; nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, son (Larry Taylor), two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, at Metz Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian National cemetery at Milligan. Memorials are suggested to the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Lincoln. Visitation will begin Friday morning at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements

Dale Klone

York resident, 84

Dale E. Klone, 84, of York, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000 in York.

He was born July 30, 1916, on the family farm near York to Philip and Clara (Kaltenborn) Klone. He was a 1935 graduate of York High School and served in the Army during World War II. Dale married Mabel Hansen on Nov. 6, 1945, in San Francisco, Calif. He was a retired farmer and rural mail carrier and also set cemetery equipment for a number of years for Metz Mortuary in York. Dale was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York, the York American Legion Bolton Post #19, and had served on the Vernon cemetery Board.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel of York; daughters, Karen (Bob) McQuistan and Deb (Dr. Brad) Brabec, both of Lincoln; one son, Roger (Karen) Klone of York; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters Maxine Kinch of Brookings, S.D., Betty (Jack) Dudley of Chesterfield, Mo., and Janice (Bob) Herbert of Eugene, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Patty Ann.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 20, at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Memorials should be made in care of the family. Visitation for the public will begin at 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, at Metz Mortuary in York, which is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence Reetz

York resident, 83

Lawrence O. Reetz, 83, of York died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in Hastings. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Verna Littrel

California resident, 85

Verna Mae (Lance) Littrel, 85, died on Nov. 8, 2000, in Blythe, Calif. She was born in 1915 to Samuel and Nellie Lance in Gresham.

She graduated from Gresham High School. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one sister, Velma M. Matzner, and a daughter, Donna Rae Littrel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Littrel, her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services are pending.

Otto Wiemer

Utica resident, 74

Otto M. Wiemer, 74, of Utica, died Thursday, Nov. 16 at his home.

Otto was a farmer and cattle feeder. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a WWII veteran. He was a member of the Utica Legion Post #49. He married Darlene Handler on April 25, 1953 at Utica.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene; son, Jim (Michelle) Wiemer of Gresham; two daughters, Denise Wiemer and Eric Morris of Lincoln and Diane (David) Mooney of Utica; two sisters, Laura (Milton) Stoll of Gresham and Lorena Vomhof of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Katharina Wiemer; two brothers, Carl and Lorenz Wiemer; and a sister, Alma Wenz.

Services are 2: 30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica with the Rev. Robert Gadeken officiating. Burial will be in the Utica cemetery. A military graveside service will be conducted by Utica Legion Post #49.

Volzke Mortuary in Seward is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Monson

Sutton resident, 66

Betty June Monson, 66, of Sutton died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

She was born June 20, 1934, near York to Burdette and Wave (Hager) Jones. She attended schools in Fairmont, McCool, York and Sutton, graduating from the Sutton High School in 1951. She began working at the Grafton Bank in Grafton after graduating from high school.

On July 20, 1953, she was married to Lemoine "Hap" Alfred Monson in Clay Center. They made their home on a farm south of Sutton, then moved to a farm south of Saronville where they lived for 33 years. Her husband died Nov. 3, 1988.

She worked as the Village Clerk for Saronville for a number of years. She prepared taxes for Bottorf and Maser Law Firm in Sutton. For the last 24 years, she has worked for the City State Bank in Sutton.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Sutton American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary of Harvard, and the Women's Bowling Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Donita (Steve) Furman of Clay Center and Deb (Doug) Rainforth of Doniphan; son, Doug (Billie) Monson of York; three sisters, Melba Minich, Barbara (Bobbie) Bolte, both of York, and Verla Alberts of Saronville; two brothers, Rick Jones of Sutton and Gary Jones of Chicago, Ill.; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter; Denise; and a son, Dennis.

Services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton with the Rev. Elizabeth Hanley officiating. Burial will be in the Saron Lutheran cemetery near Saronville. Memorials may be given to the family. Kohler Mortuary in Sutton is in charge of arrangements.

Waldo Schlechte

York resident, 82

Waldo Carl Schlechte, 82, of York died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, in York.

He was born Feb. 5, 1918, to Ernest and Helena (Uffelman) Schlechte. He attended South St. John's Lutheran School south of Waco.

Waldo was employed on several farms until his induction into the Army on Oct. 23, 1941. He was in the military police and attained the rank of Tech Sgt. He served at Ladd's Field near Fairbanks, Alaska, for three years and at Camp Atterbury, Ind., for nine months. He was discharged on Sept. 30, 1945. Waldo took over his father's farm near McCool Junction, where he lived until his retirement in 1977, moving to York. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church near Waco and was also an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by three sisters, Lenora Gocke of Utica, Mickey Dochow of Portland, Ore., and Loa Braker of Orange, Calif.; two brothers, Arlo Schlechte of Tomball, Texas, and Lorence Schlechte of Blanchard, Idaho; two sisters-in-law, Opal Schlechte of Hampton and Ann Schlechte of Houston, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Saturday, at St. John's Lutheran Church southeast of Waco with the Rev. Paul Kern Officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be sent to the church. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9, at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Clara "Myrtle" Wagner

York County resident, 96

Clara "Myrtle" Wagner, 96, widow of Ora Wagner and longtime York County resident, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

She was born Nov. 8, 1903, in rural Seward County near Utica to Frank S. And Clara (Gilliland) Fair. She was five months old when she moved with her parents to York County near Charleston. She attended Rural School District #32 and Fairmont High School.

She was married to Ora Wagner on April 12, 1921, near Charleston. They spent their entire lives in York County farming near Lushton, Benedict, and north of Bradshaw. They later retired to live in York.

She is survived by her daughter, Luella Pettey of Bradshaw; three grandchildren, Carol Mason, Robert (Sandra) Pettey of Bradshaw, and Barb (Tom) Budler of York; six great-grandchildren, Bryan Mason of Bradshaw, Lindsey Mason of Maryville, Mo.; Sara Pettey of York, Brent and Josh Budler of Seward, and Sheldon Budler of York. Also surviving are cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband in 1980, her son Virgil in 1940, an infant daughter, infant twin granddaughters and her son-in-law Leroy Pettey.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church with the Rev. Seth Leypoldt officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

John Romsdal

Lincoln resident, 94

John R. Romsdal, 94, of Lincoln, former longtime Waco resident, died Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at Lincoln. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary of York.

Lila Weiss

York resident, 78

Lila Weiss, 78, of York died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at York. She was born Aug. 8, 1922, at Bradshaw to Fred and Helena (Rahrs) Reetz.

Lila married Alvin A. Weiss on April 9, 1944, at Hampton. They lived and farmed near York until 1959. Lila worked at the Holland House in York from 1960 until it closed. She was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church at York.

Survivors include her son Ron and Patrice Weiss of York and her daughter Donna and Randall Eastwood of Omaha; grandchildren, Christopher Weiss of York, Tricia and Carey Smith of Omaha, and Trent Eastwood of Omaha. Also surviving are her brother, Lawrence Reetz, and sister, Velma Maronde, both of York. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Alvin, daughter Linda and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church in York on Friday at 10: 30 a.m. with the Rev. Art Brinkmeyer. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery of York. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Larkin

Bradshaw area resident, 87

Helen Larkin, 87, a longtime Bradshaw area resident, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000 at Osceola. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary of York.

Robert Nickels

Lake Preston, S.D., resident, 43

Robert D. Nickels, 43, died Oct. 21, 2000, at Lake Preston. S.D.

He was born Oct. 6, 1957, at Stromsburg. He was a graduate of Mt. Jackson High School in Virginia and joined the Air Force in 1980.

He was married to Deborah Bartel of St. Edward and had two sons, Brandon and Robert Joseph.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah, and son, Robert Joseph of Belle Fouche, S.D.; parents, Dean and Pat Nickels of York; parents-in-law, Harlan and Wilma Bartel of St. Edward; two sisters, Deborah (Steve) Easley of Pawhuska, Okla.; Mitze (Mike) Rethwisch of Randolph; two brothers, Michael (Susan) Nickels of Raymond, N.H., and Randy (Anita) Nickels of York; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by a son, Brandon; grandparents; and nephew, Larry Dean Black.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fouche, S.D.

Shirley Kleinschmidt

Hastings resident, 69

Shirley Ann Kleinschmidt, 69, of Hastings, formerly of Grafton, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at the Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings.

Shirley was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Seward to Oakley E. and Helen (Sorter) Krokstrom. She attended Lincoln public schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945. After high school she worked at KLIN radio and KOLN television station in Lincoln.

She was married to Donald Lloyd Kleinschmidt on Aug. 16, 1961, in Omaha. To this union two sons were born: Steven D. and Michael G. They made their home on a farm near the Bruning Airbase in Bruning. In 1964 they moved back to a farm near Grafton. She was a local reporter for the area, reporting to the Clay County News in Sutton and the Nebraska Signal in Geneva. Her husband died Feb. 4, 1989. After his death she lived in Geneva and Lincoln. In 1996 she became a resident of the Hearthstone in York and in March of this year she moved to Perkins Pavilion in Hastings. She was a member of the Federated Church.

She is survived by her sons, Steve (Dee Ann) Kleinschmidt of Johnston, Iowa, and Mike (Bette) leinschmidt of Hastings; her mother, Helen Krokstrom of Lincoln; two brothers, Paul Krokstrom of Grand Island and Larry Krokstrom of Lodi, Calif.; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and father.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church in Sutton with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will be in the Sutton cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. Kohler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of arrangements.
