Robert Coy Noreen, 65

(July 7) SHAWNEE, Kan. - Robert "Robbie" Coy Noreen, 65, of Shawnee, Kan., died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. He was born Feb. 2, 1938, at Pine City, Minn.

His parents were Elmer and Geneva Noreen. He married Dr, Raylene Noreen on Feb. 20, 1960, at Salina, Kan. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force, and also was employed by Panhandle Eastern Pipeline (Duke Energy) as stores superintendent. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Raylene Noreen of the home in Shawnee; son Randall Noreen of Overland Park, Kan.; two daughters, Robyn Smith of Mission, Kan., and Rhonda Noreen of Shawnee; and three grandchildren. He also is survived his sister, Betty Friestad of Indio, Calif.

Mr. Noreen's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Merriam Christian Church. Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Heart Institute. The Amos Family Funeral Home of Shawnee is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Irene Hinton, 77

(July 7) BINGHAM - Phyllis Irene Hinton, 77, longtime Alliance resident, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at Sunset Manor in Brush, Colo. She was born May 13, 1926, at Hyannis, Neb.

Her parents were Elmer and Isabel (Stinnette) Mallory. She grew up in Bingham, Neb. She was married to Dean Hinton on March 31, 1951. The couple lived and worked on Gudmunson Ranch, near Whitman, for 12 years, then moved to Alliance in 1963, where they resided until she moved to Sunset Manor. She was employed as a clerk for Newberry's and Bernie's Supply, and was an Avon representative for many years. She is survived by husband Dean of the home in Alliance; her two sons, Bob (and Jorene) Hinton of Alliance and Brian (and Kris) Hinton of Tulsa, Okla.; and three grandchildren, including Kyle and Kira Hinton of Alliance. She also is survived by her sister, Bobba (Martha) Perrin of Hyannis, and aunts Dutch (Alice) Sellers and Leah Neilson, both of Alliance.

Mrs. Hinton's graveside funeral and burial will be Wednesday, July 9, at Bingham Cemetery, with Pastor Bill DeLisle officiating. Heer Mortuary & Crematory is entrusted with cremation, and the family is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's patients at Sunset Manor in Brush, Colo., or sent to Bob Hinton, 447 Anthony Ave., Alliance, NE 69301.

Ruby D. Smith, 83

(July 8) ALLIANCE - Ruby D. Smith, 83, of Alliance, NE died Friday, July 5, 2002 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born August 9, 1918 in Alliance to Daniel and Edith (Sisley) Colerick.

She came from a widely publicized family. Three brothers and one cousin Colerick had married 4 sisters Sisley. One brother Sisley had married a Colerick niece. After a time, the boy's father and the girl's mother died. The Colerick mother would later marry the Sisley father. Within two hours after the Alliance Times-Herald ran a large display regarding this union of the two families, the news was picked up by nearly every major newspaper in the nation. The Times-Herald called them, two of the most wedded families in the world. Ruby was proud to say that she spent her childhood in various places; having lived in a sheep wagon, a log cabin, a sod house, and above a fire station. She married Marion Smith on October 10, 1938. They lived most of their years in Alliance. She worked in the doctor's clinic and the hospital. After her retirement, she kept herself busy by assisting elderly persons with their Medicare problems. She was always ready to lend a helping hand. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alliance and the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Mary Smith of Hastings and Ron and Sharon Smith of Grand Island, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Erma Hawley of Alliance and Alta and Gene Holthus of Cheyenne, Wyo.; loving nieces and nephews and was "Grandma" to the Steve and Reyna Burger family in Alliance. She leaves many friends and relatives to celebrate her life. Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, at the United Methodist Church in Alliance. The Rev. Mark Schutt and Rev. Dan Floyd officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church in Alliance. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edward H. Kutschke, 73

(July 8) ALLIANCE - Edward H. Kutschke, 73, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born March 13, 1930, at Sierakowice, Poland to Karl W. and Agnes (Piotrowski) Kutschke.

Edward moved to the United States in 1951. He first settled at Gordon and worked on a ranch. He moved to Alliance in 1952 and eventually acquired and operated his own farm and ranch operation. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, travel, and the outdoors. He married Donna Rae LaClair May 13, 1956, at Alliance. He was a member of the Eagles and the First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by is wife, Donna Kutschke; son, David Edward Kutschke; and daughter, Karla Renae Kutschke, all of Alliance. He also is survived by his mother, Agnes Kutschke of Valleyview, Alberta, Canada; sister, Edith Weed of Alliance; and his uncle, Willy Kutschke of Sugar Grove, Penn., nephews, Pete Gerdau and Rolf Gerdau, both of Alliance; Bruce Kutschke of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; nieces, Donna, Mary, and Laura Kutschke, all of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was preceded in death by his father, and his brother, Otto A. Kutschke.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Stephen Roosa officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, or the American Lung Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Fred J. Kimmel, 58

(July 9) ALLIANCE - Fred J. Kimmel, 58, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born January 4, 1944, at Alliance to Henry and Amalia "Molly" (Hass) Kimmel.

He married Cynthia M. Kosmicki on Aug. 3, 1968, at Alliance. He was a member of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Kimmel of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Melissa Kimmel of Alliance; son, Brian Kimmel of Lincoln; daughters, Katy Cooper of Denver, Colo.; and Jenni Kimmel of Albuquerque, N.M.; and grandchildren, Taven Kimmel and Kyah Kimmel of Alliance. He also is survived by his mother, Molly Kimmel of Alliance; sister, Debbie Kimmel of Lincoln; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Anne Kimmel of Nashville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Michele Kimmel Weinman of Alliance. His father Henry, and his brother, David, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 11, at the Alliance Berean Church with Pastor Dave Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Berean Church or the American Lung Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Eleanor Matson, 88

(July 9) ALLIANCE - Eleanor Matson, 88, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born May 23, 1914, at Peru. Her parents were Glen and Beryl (Pearson) Martin.

She was raised at Benedict. She was married to Glen Matson on May 30, 1934. They lived at Stromsburg and York prior to moving to Kearney in 1949. She moved to Scottsbluff in 1993 and to Alliance in 1997. She had worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse and was a lifelong native of Nebraska. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Chuck Fiebig of Bella Vista, Ark., and Carol and Ray Still of Bridgeport; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Betty Waddell of Columbia, S.C. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Martin Matson; great-grandson, Eric; and brother, Don Martin.

Mrs. Matson's memorial service will be at 9 a.m., Friday, July 12, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Rev. C. Mueller officiating. Inurnment will be in the Stamford Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Friends unable to attend the service may sign the register at Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, July 11.

Vera H. Underwood, 91

(July 9) ALLIANCE - Vera H. Underwood, 91, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Colorado Springs, Colo. She was born Oct. 30, 1910, at Alliance to Otto and Rose Hagaman.

She was retired from St. Joseph's Hospital where she worked for many years. She was married to George Underwood on May 9, 1986, at Three Forks, Mont. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie Stordahl of Security, Colo.; son Bill Freman of Cypress, Calif.; granddaughters, Denise Layfield and Rhonda Hougland; grandsons Rodney Freman, Dennis Merritt and Darin Stordahl; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. She also is survived by nephews and nieces including Wilma Younkin. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brothers George and Ford Hagaman.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July l1, at the Alliance Cemetery with the Rev. Walter Cline officiating. A memorial has been established to Prairie Haven Hospice, P.O. Box 21, Alliance, NE 69301-0021. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rachel Shoop, 18

(July 10) GORDON - Rachel Shoop, 18, of Gordon, formerly of Alliance, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, died of auto accident injuries sustained near Hot Springs, S.D. She was born March 15, 1983, at Pine Ridge, S.D. Her parents were Bob and JoAnn (Sutton) Shoop. Her mother preceded her in death.

She would have been a senior at Gordon High School this coming fall. She had resided in Rushville, Hay Springs and Kearney, before moving to Alliance and then Gordon. She had worked for the Hacienda, Pizza Hut and Western Cafˇ in Gordon. She is survived by her father and stepmother Bob and Judy Shoop of Gordon; brothers Billy Sutton and Christopher Sutton, both of Alliance; and sister Sissy Sutton of Kearney.

Ms. Shoop's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12, at First Presbyterian Church in Gordon, with The Rev. Vonne Blessman Andersen officiating. Burial will be in Gordon Cemetery. An evening service, with visitation, for her classmates and friends will be at 7 p.m. July 11, at Cicmanec-Pier Chapel. Memorials may be made to a scholarship fund in her memory, in care of First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343.

Lucas Shane Hald, 18

(July 10) HYANNIS - Lucas Shane Hald, 18, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Hyannis. He was born Jan. 9, 1983, at Kearney, Neb. His parents were Donald and Pearl (Vernon) Hald.

He attended school in Ravenna until 1988, and graduated from Hyannis High School in 2001. He was employed by Sandhills Amoco Station in Hyannis throughout his high school years. He is survived by his parents, Pearl Young of Ravenna and Donald Hald of Hyannis; sister Brandy Hald of Kearney; and grandparents Marvin and Virginia Vernon of Ravenna, Shirley Jordan of Ravenna and Richard Hald of St. Paul.

Mr. Hald's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Hyannis High School Auditorium, with Rev. Bill DeLisle officiating; and then at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 12, at United Methodist Church in Ravenna, with Rev. Dean Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery in Ravenna. Visitation will be until 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Mullen Funeral Home; and from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rasmussen's Funeral Home in Ravenna. Memorials may be in Hald's name, in care of Mullen Funeral Home.

Theron Arnold Nikont, 71

(July 10) HEMINGFORD - Theron Arnold Nikont, 71, died July 9, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born July 2, 1931, at Hemingford to Theodore H. and Gladys (Miller) Nikont.

He attended grade school west of Hemingford. He then attended Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis for three years and returned to Hemingford where he graduated in 1949. He enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard in 1950 and served for 8 years. He married Helen Anderson on Aug. 24, 1952, at Alliance. He farmed on his grandparents homestead west of Hemingford. In 1971 they moved to Montana where he ranched in western Montana at the Lost Trail Ranch. In 1981 he returned to Hemingford and began T. & S. Vending with his son Scott for 12 years and he has been semi-retired the last seven years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion and was a 4-H Leader when he lived in Montana. He is survived by his wife Helen; son and daughter-in-law, Scott O. and Carmen Nikont of Hemingford; daughter Lisa Nikont of Goodyear, Ariz.; grandchildren Cody Oneil Fader of Tucson, Ariz., and Jessie Christin Porter and her father Chris Porter of Haver, Mont. He also is survived by his brothers Duane and wife Marge Nikont of Mitchell, Dean and wife Monica Nikont of St. Paul, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Theodore, sister Mardell Williams, infant daughter Candis Kay and infant son Mathew Arron.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, July 12, at the United Methodist Church at Hemingford, with Rev. Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association or to the United Methodist Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Julie A. Prickett, 61

(July 10) YUMA, Ariz. - Julie A. Prickett, 61, passed away on July 3, 2003, at Yuma. She was born July 16, 1941, at Omaha, to James V. and M. Virginia (Malm) Hendrickson.

Julie graduated from Gering High School in 1959. She married Larry Prickett on February 23, 1960, at Scottsbluff. She owned and operated J & L Handy Service with her husband until illness forced her retirement. Julie is survived by her husband, Larry Prickett of Yuma; her son, Michael Prickett of Yuma; three daughters, JulAnne and Les Gompert, and Chris Prickett all of Yuma; Laura and Tracy Novis of Palm Desert, Calif.; granddaughter, Justine Gompert of Yuma; three grandsons Jacob Gompert of Yuma, Taylor and Zachary Novis of Palm Desert. She also is survived by her mother, Virginia Hendrickson of Gering; sisters, Susan (Wally) Baird of Alliance, Joan Hendrickson of Gering; brothers, James (Pam) Hendrickson of Columbus, and William (Lorraine) Hendrickson of Alliance; and nieces and nephews. Her father, James V. Hendrickson, preceded her in death.

A memorial open house will be held Wednesday, July 16, at 661 S. 6th Ave, Yuma, Ariz., from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Yuma, 1824 S. 8th Ave, Yuma AZ 85364. Without her in it, the world is a darker place.

Helen O. Sale, 99

(July 16) ALLIANCE - Helen O. Sale, 99, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. She was born August 25, 1901, near Parsons, Kansas to Edward and Dora (Volk) Wilkerson.

She graduated from Parsons High School in 1921. She then graduated with a B.A. degree from Kansas City University, Kansas City, Missouri in 1925. She then taught school until 1929. She was married to Harry W. Sale on June 16, 1934, at Topeka Congregational Church in Topeka, Kan. They lived in Topeka where her husband was with Mutual Life of New York and she became president of Y.W.C.A. and chairperson of the Girl Scout Leaders. In 1938 they moved to Davenport, Iowa and in 1942 to Billings, Mont. While there she was elected state president of the Congregational Church Women. In 1945 they moved to Sheridan, Wyo. and in 1956 she was elected president of Church Women United. In 1956 they moved to Alliance where they became owners of the Coast-to-Coast Store. They sold the store in 1974.

Following the death of her husband in 1977 she became chairperson of the Box Butte County annual Heart Drive for 10 years. In 1980 and 1982 she was Western Area Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for the Heart Association. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as elder, trustee and deacon, was chairman of Circle 5, treasurer and president of the Women's Association, and a loyal member of Bible study groups and Sunday School classes. She also was a member of Alliance Woman's Club, Church Women United, and Aloyah Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She also was a charter member of the Alliance Laubach Literacy group, through which she tutored at least one student each year from 1974 to 1996. From 1978 to 1980 she was state treasurer for the Literacy Council of Nebraska. She also had membership in the Association of Parliamentarians serving as the president from 1985-1986. In addition she was an active member of the Extension Clubs of Box Butte County. She was recognized for her 25 years of service as a volunteer in charge of braiding rugs at Good Samaritan Health Care Center.

She is survived by her brother, Leland Wilkerson of Memphis, Tenn., a nephew Gary Wilkerson of Memphis, niece Wendy Morris of Los Angeles, Calif., niece and husband Marsha and Robert Ledbetter of Oklahoma City, Okla., cousin Wilma Wilkerson of Springfield, Mo., and several other cousins, nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, brothers George, Floyd, Carl and Mike and her sister Cecil preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Arlys Wilbur officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Dan Furman, 58

(July 16) ALLIANCE - Dan Furman, 58, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Aurora, Colorado. He was born December 4, 1942, at Lincoln to Waldo and Frances (Wolf) Furman.

He married Karen J. Kincaid at Lincoln on January 27, 1966. He was a member of the Mason Lodge and Shrine of Alliance. He is survived by his wife Karen of Cheyenne, Wyo; daughter, Cheryl Furman of Aurora, Colo; brothers, Robert Furman of Lincoln and Dr. James Furman of Alliance. His parents and two sons, Ricky and Rodney, preceded him in death.

Private family graveside services will be held at the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice or in care of Karen Furman at, P.O. Box 110543, Aurora, CO 80042. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
