Brandon E. Robert Nickels, 19

Brandon E. Robert Nickels, 19, of Fruitdale, S.D., died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000 in an auto accident near St. Onge, S.D.

He was born Feb. 3, 1981 at Chanute Air Force Base at Rantoul, Ill., to Robert Dean and Debra Kay (Bartels) Nickels. He spent his first year in Turkey where his father was stationed with the U.S. Air Force. The family returned to Nebraska for a short time. They then moved to South Dakota and he grew up in the Northern Black Hills area. He attended schools in Sturgis, Newell and Belle Fourche.

He was a hard worker, and enjoyed physical activities, being around people and being outdoors. "He lived life to the fullest."

He his survived by his parents, Robert Dean and Debra Kay Nickels of Fruitdale, S.D.; three brothers, Robert Joseph, Jamison Joseph and Alan Ray, all of Fruitdale, S.D.; special friends, Bill and Amanda Silvernagel of Fruitdale, S.D.; maternal grandparents and aunt, Harlan and Wilma Bartels and Mamie of St. Edward; paternal grandparents, Dean and Pat Nickels of York; aunts, Debra (Steve) Easley and Mitze (Mike) Rethwich; uncles Michael (Susan) Nickels and Randy (Anita) Nickels.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 17, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, S.D., with Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial services were held at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

A memorial has been established. Carlsen-Jolley Funeral Home of Spearfish, S.D., were in charge of arrangements.

Dorothea Fischer

Dorothea K. Fischer, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, in Utica.

She was born on Nov. 9, 1914, in Newkirk, Okla., to William and Dorothea (Meier) Schuessler. She graduated from Newkirk High School and attended the Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Ill.

She was married to Ferdinand Fisher on June 15, 1947, in Arkansas, Kan. She and her husband farmed and she was a piano music teacher.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Dorothy Schuessler of Arkansas, Kan., two nephews and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Wilmer Schuessler.

Services will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10: 30 a.m., with the Rev. Robert Gadeken officiating. Burial will be in the Utica cemetery, Utica.

Volzke Mortuary in Seward is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy I. Critel

Dorothy I. Critel, 76, of Lincoln, formerly of rural Cordova and Grand Island, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000 in Lincoln.

She was born Dec. 18, 1923 on a farm southeast of Beaver Crossing to Louis and Lena (Keller) Berst. As a young girl, she attended country school in District 29 near Beaver Crossing. On June 29, 1947, she was united in marriage to Elmer E. Critel in Kansas. They had four children. They lived near Cordova and upon Elmer's death in 1976, she moved to Grand Island and later to Lincoln to be near her children. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Lincoln and women's circles of the church.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann (Richard) Enevoldsen of Grand Island; sons, Elmer Critel of Lincoln and Gerald Critel of Beatrice; three grandchildren; sisters, Lillian Hrabran of Lincoln, Edna Jaussi of Seward and Verna (Wayne) Weyers of Elmwood; sisters-in-law, Martha and Elizabeth Critel, both of York, and Justina Critel of Stockham; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; son, Jerold; and sister, Clara Berst.

Services are at 10: 30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Lincoln with Pastor Merv Goodrick officiating. Interment will be in Lushton City cemetery in Lushton. Visitation is Tuesday, Aug. 8, from 3 to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and one hour prior to services on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Memorials may be directed in care of the family. Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Prochnow

Seward resident, 80

Marjorie M. Prochnow, 80, of Seward died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, in Seward.

She was born on June 12, 1920, in Hampton to Louis and Ida (Joseph) Sagehorn. She graduated from Seward High School. She married Emil Prochnow on Dec. 24, 1940, in Seward.

Survivors include her son, Roger (Gloria) Prochnow of Pleasant Dale; daughters, Beverly Struebing of Fremont, Ruth (Carrol) Fraass of Marquette; sister, Doris (Wilfred) Maier of Staplehurst; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil; sister, Evelyn Dobrusky; and son-in-law, Robert Struebing.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at Volzke Mortuary in Seward with the Rev. Mark Cutler officiating. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery in Seward.

James Hill Sr.

York resident, 84

James R. Hill Sr., 84, of York died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, in York.

He was born Jan. 27, 1916, in Denver, Mo., to Frederick and Zola (Spencer) Hill. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army.

He married Ruth Tyerrel on March 27, 1952. She died in 1991.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the York American Legion Bolton Post #19.

He is survived by one son, James R. (Debbie) Hill Jr. of Bellevue; two grandsons; brothers, Dean Hill of Felt Mills, N.Y., and John (Donna) Hill of Martinsville, Mo.; sisters, Luella Gillmore of Young Wood, Pa., and Nelda Groom of Crane, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, at Metz Chapel In York. Burial will be in the Mound Prairie cemetery near Goehner. Visitation will begin Thursday morning at Metz Mortuary, which is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Hattel

Benedict resident, 91

Pauline A. Hattel, 91, of Benedict died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was born April 13, 1909, at Benedict to George W. and Kuni Gunda (Betz) Shipferling. She was a longtime cook at the Benedict High School and was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church at Benedict. On Dec. 23, 1931, she was married to Russell A. Hattel.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Roger) Smith of Monticello, Iowa, and Julia (Virgil) Wiege of Hollister, Mo.; five grandchildren, Brenda (Steve) Lindell of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Teresa Smith and her fiance, Mike Bader of Monticello, Iowa, ReNee (Brian) Moore of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Trevin (Tara) Seng and Tracin Seng, all of Omaha; one brother, John (Norma) Shipferling of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Lindell and Amanda Lindell, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Metz Chapel. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill cemetery west of Benedict. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation begins Friday morning. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Naber

Grand Island resident, 82

Bernice Marie Muchow Wittmack Naber, 82, of Grand Island died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Edgewood Vista of Grand Island.

She was born on April 28, 1918, to Frederick and Mary (Muller) Muchow at Otis, Colo. Her mother died when she was two years old and she went to live with her grandparents at Blue Hill until 10 years later when she was adopted by her uncle and aunt, August and Augusta (Muchow) Whittmack. She was educated in York County, attending Edison Grade School and graduating from York High school in 1936. She was confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in York.

She married Rupert Paul Naber on Sept. 29, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church at York. The couple farmed together east of York. After her two children were out of school, she was employed as a dental assistant for Roehrs and Roehrs. In the 1980s, the couple moved to Grand Island where she worked for several years at the Stuhr Museum as an interpreter.

She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church of Grand Island and of the Ladies Aid in the church at Utica.

Survivors include her husband, Rupert P. Naber of Grand Island; a daughter, Berdena (Gerald) Leitschuck of Grand Island; a son, Lloyd (Kay) Naber of Waco; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Marvin (Therese) Muchow of Grand Island; a sister, Mildred Sheffield of Aurora; six step-grandchildren, 12 step-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her adoptive parents, one step-great-grandchild, and one brother-in-law.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at 1: 30 p.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church, 4018 Zola Lane, Grand Island, with the Rev. William Voelker officiating. Burial will be in the West Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday with family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home, 1123 West Second St., Grand Island.

Memorials may be made to the Peace Lutheran Church or to the Alzheimer's Association.

Letha Childers

Nebraska City resident, 87

Letha Irene Childers, 87, of Nebraska City died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Morton House in Nebraska City.

She was born July 7, 1913, in Albia, Iowa, to Cecil and Mabel (Hoagland) Bailey. She was married to Harry W. Childers on June 11, 1931, at Papillion. She had been employed as nurse's aid for St. Mary's Hospital and retired in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Mardelle Louise (Ray) Johnson of Fairmont; two grandsons; one granddaughter; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Peterson Mortuary Chapel in Nebraska City. The Rev. David Nystrom will officiate. Burial will be at Wyuka cemetery in Nebraska City. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. until the service time at Peterson Mortuary. Memorials may be given to First Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Multiple Sclerosis Fund.

Leroy Brackhan

Waco resident, 71

Leroy E. Brackhan, 71, of Waco died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, in York.

He was born June 29, 1929, in Seward County to Emil and Emma (Wiemer) Brackhan. He attended St. John's School southeast of Waco. He married Elaine Grosor Tracy on July 12, 1963, at Peace Lutheran Church in Waco. He worked 11 years at York Packing, 11 years at Sunflower Beef Packers and eight years for Champion Home Builders in York. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Waco.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Waco; daughters, LeAnne (Dan) Eaton of Bowie, Texas, and Cindy (Bob) Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis.; stepdaughters, Marlene Tracy and partner, Karen Kurbis of Lincoln, Julie (Calvin) Michaels of Burlington, Wyo.; sons, Norval Brackhan of York, Lonnie Brackhan of Beatrice; stepsons, Ivan (Judy) Tracy of Geneva, Marshall (Linda) Tracy of Lincoln, John (Jo) Tracy of Omaha, Dennis (Sheila) Tracy of Grangeville, Ida.; 37 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Ernie (Alberta) Brackhan of York; sister, Alma (Louis) Hoffman of Lincoln; and sister-in-law, Thelma Brackhan of Cordova.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother, infant twin brothers, a sister and infant sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 27, at Peace Lutheran Church in Waco. Burial will be in Council cemetery south of Bradshaw. The family suggests memorials to the Lutheran Hour or the Handicap Accessibility Fund at Peace Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Leila Buerer
Edgar resident, 86

Leila Renza Buerer, 86, of Edgar died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

She was born to Arthur and Ethel (Elliott) Kinnison on June 16, 1914, at Angus. She attended the Angus School. Leila was married to Keith Clarence Buerer on Oct. 3, 1932, in Angus. To this union, nine children were born.

They spent most of their lives farming in the Nuckolls and Clay Counties. He died June 24, 1974. She remained on the farm and then moved into the Edgar community later, becoming a resident of the Rose Brook Skilled Services.

She was a member of the Church of the Plains in Edgar, a lifetime member of the Edgar American Legion Auxiliary in which she was a Gold Star Sister, and a member of the Prairie Dale Women's Club. She was a past president of both organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sons, Donald, James and Richard; one grandson; four sisters; and two brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Keith Jr. (Jean) Buerer of Nevada City, Calif., Gean (Marlene) Buerer of Geneva, and Dennis of Clay Center; three daughters, Deloris (Lou) Springer and Nancy (Ken) Overturf, all of Edgar, and Pat (John) Riggle of Columbus; two daughters-in-law, Myra Buerer of Clay Center and Deb Buerer of Fairfield; one brother, Bob Kinnison of Kenniwick, Wash.; 25 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 1, at the Church of the Plains in Edgar with the Rev. Rick Cepris officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the family.

Frederick Gierhan
Utica resident, 81

Frederick J. Gierhan, 81, of Utica died Nov. 27, 2000, in Lincoln.

He was born Dec. 11, 1918, in rural Utica to Carl and Amelia (Schultze) Gierhan. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League and the York Choral Union. He farmed until his retirement.

He married Esther Thompson on Dec. 17, 1938, at Milbank, S.D.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; sons, Ronald (Sharon) Gierhan of Arlington, Wash., Curtis (Doris) Gierhan of Ligonier, Ind., Stanley (Diane) Gierhan of Pilger; daughters, Shirdelle (Harvey) Mueller of Columbus, and Glenda (David) Dobbertien of Ogallala; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Martin, Victor, Walter, and Herman Gierhan.

Services will be held at 2: 30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica with the Rev. Robert Gadeken officiating. Interment was in Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery in Utica. Visitation is Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, from 2 to 8: 30 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 30, from 8: 30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home between 6 and 8 p.m., Thursday.

Casket bearers will be Shawn Mueller, Shannon Mueller, Matt Dobbertien, Carl Gierhan, Ian Gierhan and Brian Gierhan. Memorials may be sent, in lieu of flowers, to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Jefferson Lars Bailey

Jefferson Lars Bailey, of Catlettsburg, Ky., was stillborn on Friday, July 7, 2000 at King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky., to Dr. Wendell and Bridget Bailey of Catlettsburg, Ky. Funeral services were held at Steen Funeral Home in Ashland, Ky. on Tuesday, July 11, at 11 a.m.

Arlene Gale Blum

Arlene Gale Blum, 76, died Saturday, July 8, 2000 at Arlington, Va. Following cremation, memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 15, at 10: 30 a.m. at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Art Brinkmeyer officiating.

Clara Mae Browitt

Clara Mae Browitt, 84, of York, died Monday, July 10, 2000 at her home in York. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating.

Dorothy Fleck

Dorothy Fleck, 83, of Stromsburg, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000 at her home. Funeral services are pending at Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg.
