Erwin H. Schmidt

Thayer resident, 88
Erwin H. Schmidt, 88, of Thayer died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Thayer.

He was born Nov. 18, 1913, at Thayer to Paul and Anna (Panning) Schmidt. He was a lifelong farmer in the Thayer area who retired in the early 1970s. He was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he never missed a day of parochial school.

He was formerly a school bus driver at Zion, a church janitor for 10 years and served on the Waco Volunteer Fire Department Board. He was also a member of the Thayer Credit Association. On Sept. 11, 1938, he was married to Vada Conell at Thayer.

He is survived by his wife Vada of Thayer; two sons, Robert (Karen) Schmidt of Omaha and Allan Schmidt of Chadron; one daughter, Janet (Dick) Liggett of Council Bluffs, Iowa; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Jones of Moore, Okla.; and a former daughter-in-law, Laurie Schmidt of Chadron. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1: 30 p.m., Tuesday, July 16, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Thayer with the Rev. Lee Seetin officiating. Burial will be in the Zion cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Hour. Visitation has begun at Metz Mortuary in York.

Ethel Marie Pearson

Lincoln resident, 88
Ethel Marie Pearson, 88, of Lincoln died on Monday, July 8, 2002, in Lincoln.

She was born in Gothenburg on May 8, 1914, to Oscar and Christine (Russell) Tederman.

She worked as a librarian in the public schools and was a member of the Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, James (Christinia) Pearson of Evergreen, Colo.; daughters, Carole (John) LeFeber of Lincoln and Margaret "Peg" (Kurt) Anderson of Grayslake, Ill., and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Vernon Pearson, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2002, at First Evangelical Covenant Church, 6024 'L' St., Lincoln, with Pastor Donald R. Ostrom officiating.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Gothenburg Memorial Park, Gothenburg. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. There will be cremation and no visitation.

John W. Wiemer

York resident, 59
John W. Wiemer, 59, of York died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in York.

He was born March 10, 1943, in York to William A. and Nora Lucille (Folgers) Wiemer. He served during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. He worked a number of years in York for NPPD in the maintenance department.

He is survived by one daughter, Bridget Wiemer of Salt Lake City, Utah; one grandson; sister, Patsy Whipple of San Angelo, Texas; two half sisters and a stepbrother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Metz Chapel. Military graveside services will be held at Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Vera V. Oberg

Stromsburg resident, 80
Vera V. Oberg, 80, of Stromsburg, died July 12, 2002, at the Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1921, in Stromsburg to Henry F. and Lydia V. (Nelson) Samuelson. She graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1939 and attended Kearney State Teachers College.

She was married to Robert Oberg on Aug. 11, 1946. They lived in the Stromsburg community where she was a school teacher and worked at First National Bank of Stromsburg from 1973 to 1990. She was a member of Annie Jeffrey Hospital Volunteers, Order of the Eastern Star, Calvary Lutheran Church, and Lutheran Church Women.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Oberg of Stromsburg; sons, Loren (Sherry) Oberg and Lynn (Janice) Oberg of Stromsburg; daughter, Luann (Dan) Damewood of Lincoln; daughter-in-law, Elaine Oberg of Walton; brother, Earl (Ruby) Samuelson of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; sisters, Bernice (Alvin) Johnson of Woodburn, Ore., and LaVerne (Gordon) Keahler of Slinger, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Lanny Oberg; brother, Morris Samuelson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home with the Rev. Donna Durette presiding. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 15, at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola. Interment will be in the Swede Home cemetery. Memorials may be sent to Calvary Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.

Helena Berkmeier

Exeter resident, 92
Helena "Lea" Berkmeier, 92, a resident of Exeter, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Exeter.

She was born to August and Anna (Menke) Berkmeier on Nov. 30, 1909, at Exeter.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Alice Berkmeier of Naples, Fla., nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at 10 a.m., at Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter.

A rosary service will be held at 7: 30 p.m., Monday evening, July 15, at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Visitation will begin Monday at 1 p.m. at Farmer Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at the Exeter cemetery. Officiating is Father Kenneth Borowiak.

Warren D. Kindler

Lincoln resident, 70
Warren D. Kindler, 70, of Lincoln died Tuesday, July 9, 2002.

He was born in Esbon, Kan., to Edgar and Thelma Ruth (Smith) Kindler. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of American Legion Post 3, was a hunter and fisherman and was interested in small engine repair.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie, who is from the York area; son, Glen (Susan) Kindler of Lincoln; daughters, Debra Fischer of Lincoln and Diana Kindler of Tampa, Fla.; stepdaughter, Glenna Showalter of Lincoln; eight grandchildren, one step-grandson, and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gary, and sister Nyla.

Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home at 6800 South 14th St., Lincoln. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. until services.

Shirdell R. Honea

Shirdell R. Honea, 37, of Wilber, died June 9, 2000 near Wilber. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at 10 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church in rural Tobias with the Pastor Keith H. Burk officiating.

Frank Hromadka, Jr.

Frank Hromadka, Jr., of Friend, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter. Funeral services will be held at 9: 30 a.m., Saturday, June 24, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milligan with Fr. Ken Borowiak officiating.

Stephanie (Dissmeyer) Josephson

Stephanie (Dissmeyer) Josephson, 28, of Minneapolis, Minn., died Thursday, June 22, 2000 in Minneapolis. Services are pending.

John J. Quiring

John J. Quiring, 88, of Henderson, died Thursday, June 22, 2000 at his home in Henderson. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in Henderson.

Mildred A. Farmer

Mildred A. Farmer, 91, of Geneva, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Geneva. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6, at 10: 30 a.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva. Rev. Wanda W. Bennett will officiate.

Esther L. Hartman

Esther L. Hartman, 91, of York, died Monday, July 3, 2000 in York. Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Thursday, July 6, at Metz Chapel in York.

Verlin L. Olson

Verlin L. Olson, 60, of York, died Thursday, June 8, in York. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 12, at the First Christian Church in York with the Rev. David Welch officiating.

Leann R. Lankford

York resident, 40
Leann R. Lankford, 40, of York died Sunday, May 5, 2002, in York.

She was born May 1, 1962, in York to Wilbert and Donna Weldon. She was a 1980 graduate of Benedict High School. Leann was a dietitian at the Hearthstone in York. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in York, the Cancer Club and a past member of the York Eagles Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, April (Travis) Lane of Stromsburg; one son, Jesse Lankford of McCool Junction; grandson, Keegan Lane of Stromsburg; fiance', Roger "Chopper" Lambert of York, his children, Tyson, Katelynn and Holden Lambert of Shelby; mother, Donna (C.J.) Lankford of Wilbur; father, Wilbert (Lynn) Weldon of York; brothers, Kenny Lankford and Ron (Chris) Weldon, both of York, Michael Lankford of McCool Junction and Steven (Crystal) Lankford of Utica; sisters, Doris (Kevin) Hoffman of Bradshaw, Linda (Ron) Bondegard of Lincoln, Julie (Jim) Schoch of Benedict, and Michelle Weldon of York; grandparents, Leah Weldon and Lucille Collingham, both of York, Elmer and Lillian Gannon of Wilbur; mother-in-law, Darlene (Gerald) Upton of Beaver Crossing; in-laws, Art and Sharon Lambert of York; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, John Weldon.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, May 10, at the First Presbyterian Church in York with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Cremation. No visitation. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Michael A. Schumacher

Geneva resident, 18
Michael A. Schumacher, 18, of Geneva died on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at York.

He was born on June 12, 1984, at Geneva, son of Arthur and Darlene (Saatmann) Schumacher Jr.

Survivors include his parents, Arthur and Darlene Schumacher Jr. of Geneva; his biological father, Allen Schumacher of Geneva; his biological mother, Cheryl Kruse of Milligan; his sister, Donna Stouffer of Deshler; half-sisters, Ambrea Schumacher, Crystal Cradick, Shannon Cradick, all of York; step-sister, Monica Schumacher of Geneva; grandparents, Wally and Mary Fogel of Milligan; nieces and a nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Geneva. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Memorials may be given in care of the family. Graveside services will be held at the Geneva Public cemetery in Geneva. Officiating is Pastor Matthew Zimpelmann.

Lisa Cradick

York resident, 27
Lisa M. Cradick, 27, of York died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, near York.

She was born Aug. 28, 1975, in York to William and Megan (Troutman) McGraw.

She married Ron Cradick on May 20, 1995, in York. She was an employee of Champion Home Builders in York working in the final finish department. Lisa was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York.

Survivors include her husband, Ron Cradick of Lincoln; son, Austin of York; daughters, Araina and Morgan Cradick, both of York; parents, Bill and Megan McGraw of York; sisters, Tina (James) Ekart and Stephanie McGraw, both of York; grandmother, Katherine McGraw of Forsythe, Mo.; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Melissa Kay.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in York. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Leona Donovan

York resident, 83
Leona S. Donovan, 83, of York, passed away at The Hearthstone Care Center early on Sunday morning, Dec. 15, 2002.

Leona was born on Sept. 4, 1919, at Afton, Iowa, to Frederic and Ruth (Hart) Stevenson. She graduated from Afton Public Schools in 1937. She was united in marriage to Joseph E. Donovan on Dec. 31, 1937, at Chariton, Iowa. The couple made their home in Creston, Iowa, until 1947, when they moved to York and purchased the Squirt Bottling Company. Leona worked as office manager, secretary, and bookkeeper with her husband at the Bottling Company from 1947 to 1963. Leona then worked as office manager for the York Medical Clinic for nine years and in the business office of York College for eight years prior to her retirement in 1980.

Her husband Joe passed away on June 5, 1984. Leona was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3990 Auxiliary (where she once served as treasurer) and a member of the York Country Club.

Survivors include her sister, Georgia Pitzer of Girdwood, Alaska; two nieces: Janis (and her husband, Michael) Ross of Pasco, Wash., and Candace (and her husband, Kenneth) Stephenson of Anchorage, Alaska; two nephews: Bruce (and his wife, Marc) Farwell of Pasco, Wash., and Jay Pitzer of Girdwood, Alaska; and many friends.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe in 1984, one sister (Laurene Farwell), and two brothers-in-law (Dallas Pitzer and Bob Farwell).

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York with the Rev. Ralph H. Ford officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Memorials may be directed to the Greenwood cemetery Association. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Maurice D. Shockey

Columbus resident, 77
Maurice D. Shockey, 77, of Columbus died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Bryan LGH Hospital East in Lincoln.

He was born on April 12, 1925, in Polk County to John Patton and Pearl (Colby) Shockey. He attended York High School. He entered the Navy on July 13, 1943, and served on the USS LST 226. Maurice was in the Pacific Theater during WW II and was honorably discharged on March 4, 1946.

Maurice married Wilma Orr on July 20, 1947. He owned and operated Hilder-Shockey Jewelry Store in York for 40 years. He retired and moved to Columbus. Maurice married Nina Penfield on March 17, 1990, at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW in Columbus and York, and the Elks Club in York. He was a member of the Nebraska and South Dakota Jewelers Association and an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Nina Shockey of Columbus; son, Rick (Nancy) Shockey of Waco; stepdaughters, Lisa Tobiason of Lincoln and Shari (Bob) Haiar of Humphrey; a stepson, Alan (Tina) Penfield of Chappell; brother, Leonard Shockey of York; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Patton and Pearl (Colby) Shockey; wife, Wilma (Orr) Shockey; brother, Raymond Shockey; grandson, Teddy Tobiason; granddaughter, Cassie Haiar.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 10: 30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Timothy White officiating. Interment will be in Arborville cemetery, rural Polk, at 2 p.m. with military honors by American Legion Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Gass Haney Funeral Home. There will be a family prayer service Tuesday at 10: 15 a.m. at the church. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Hartman Post 84 or Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbus.
