Marie C. Law

York resident, 86
Marie C. Law, 86, of York died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at York.

She was born April 11, 1916, at Gresham to Frederick H. and Paulina (Clausen) Neujahr. Marie was a longtime York area seamstress having been employed at Countryside Fabrics for 15 years. She also did seamstress work for her friends and neighbors.

She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York where she was a former member of the Dorcas Church Women and was an active quilter there as well. She enjoyed flowers and bird watching.

On April 4, 1936, she was married to Wallace "Wally" Law at York.

She is survived by one son, Dennis (Kathie) of York; two daughters, LaVonne Hutzell of San Diego, Calif., and Marcia (Kenneth) Koestler of Shell Knob, Mo.; seven grandchldren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Neujahr, and a sister, Laura Neujahr, both of Lincoln; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter, son-in-law, one sister and a brother.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Dick Woolard officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. Thursday at Metz Mortuary in York.

John F. Rathje

York resident, 85
John F. Rathje, 85, of York died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Fairmont.

He was born April 18, 1917, at Surprise, Neb., to Julius and Henrietta (Rathjen) Rathje and was a lifelong York and Hamilton County farmer. He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in York and was on the original Building Committee. He was also a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and enjoyed reading.

On May 4, 1941, he was married to Veral I. Roehrs at Zion Lutheran Church at Hampton.

He is survived by two sons, Ron (Doris) Rathje and Warren (Judy) Rathje, all of York; one daughter, Shirley (Larry) Speer of Lincoln; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, George (Bernice) Rathje of Waco, Elmer (LaVon) Rathje and Glenn Rathje, all of York; two sisters, Mildred (Wilbur) Naber of Waco and Evelyn (Lewis) Driewer of Republican City; a brother-in-law, Wilbur Schlechte of Utica; and a sister-in-law, Delores Bartholomew of Tamora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, at Faith Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Arthur Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church in York. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. on Thursday at Metz Mortuary in York.

Libbie Stirba

Crete resident, 92
Libbie Stirba of Crete, formerly of Swanton and Wilber, died on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the age of 92 years 10 months and 24 days.

She was born to Joseph and Mary (Pasek) Wanek on Jan. 9, 1910, in Big Blue Precinct, Saline County, northwest of Wilber. The house that she was born in was originally a log cabin that is now at the Saline County Historical Society in Dorchester.

Libbie attended school in Wilber and graduated from Wilber High School in 1928. She was married to Joseph Stirba on April 16, 1930, in Lincoln. They lived on a farm east of Swanton for 26 years. Their two daughters, Corrine and Marilyn, were born there. They moved to Wilber in 1956 where Libbie worked in various business places. She moved to the Czech Village in 1974 following the death of her husband, Joe, on July 5, 1973. She lived there until November, 1996, when she moved to the Crete Manor following a serious illness.

She was a member of Saline Baptist Church of Dorchester, the American Legion Auxiliary for 57 years, and the ZCBJ, WFLA Lodge at Swanton for over 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Joseph and Mary; six sisters and spouses, Bertha (Fred) Ripa, Vlasta (Ernest) Fredrich, Anna (Frank) Rezny, Emma (John) Vesely, Rose (Stephen) Kohel, Mary (Eman) Blaha; five brothers and spouses, Frank (Anna), Lumir (Tillie), Adolph (Emma), Otto (Emma) and Rudolph (Mary) Wanek, and several nieces and nephews.

Her survivors are her daughters and sons-in-laws, Corrine and Dwain Tyser, Marilyn and the Rev. Roger Wolfe, all of Dorchester; six grandchildren and spouses, Sheldon and Debra Tyser of Wilber, Greg and Becky Tyser of Dorchester, Roger Jr. and Diane Wolfe of York, Diane and Michael Turner, Julie and Joe Holly, all of Dorchester, Christian and Gail Wolfe of Wheatfield, Ind.; 14 great-grandchildren, Kodee, Taylor, and Kohl Tyser; Erin (Jeremy) Tyler, Jeremiah (Brandi) Wolfe, David Wolfe; Benjamin, Adam, Nathaniel and Amber Holly, Louis and Shane Krasser, Casey Elizabeth Wolfe, and Destinee Turner; two great-great-grandsons, Andrew and Parker Tyler; sisters-in-law, Ella Vacek of Wilber, Sylvia Pospisil of Crete, and Evelyn Rahe of DeWitt and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at Zajicek Funeral Home in Wilber, Neb., at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2002. The Rev. Roger Wolfe will officiate.

Harold G. Bernt

York resident, 75
Harold G. Bernt, 75, of York, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Lincoln.

He was born in Polk County on June 5, 1927 to Frederick and Anna (Korger) Bernt. Harold attended rural schools until entering the Army during World War II. Harold married Ruth M. Husmann April 3, 1949 in York County. He worked for 41 years at NPPD and retired in 1991 as Transmission Supervisor. Harold received his honorary high school diploma from Shelby High School in 2000. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the V.F.W.

Survivors include three sons, David (Frances) of Garland, Richard of Lincoln and Bruce (F. Christine) of Lincoln; his daughter, Susan (Michael) McLain of York; six grandchildren and a great-grandson. Also surviving are his brother, Richard (Eva) Bernt of Columbus, and his sister, Rose (Jess) Ussery of Merkel, Texas.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with the Rev. Leo Seiker. Rosary services will be held at 6: 30 p.m., Monday, at Metz Mortuary. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Visitation will begin Sunday at 1 p.m.

Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Cancer Fund.

Laura Fenster
Former York resident, 90

Laura A. Fenster, 90, of Lincoln, formerly of York, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in Lincoln.

She was born Dec. 27, 1911, in Putnam, Okla., to William H. and Anna O. (Klunder) Hines. She was a 1929 graduate of Hampton High School and attended York College and the University of Nebraska. She taught school in the Hamilton and York County area for several years. On June 25, 1936, she was united in marriage to Raymond A. Fenster at Hampton. Raymond died in 1981.

Laura was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York, L.W.M.L., the York Garden Club, the York American Legion Auxiliary and served on the Past Presidents Organization, 8 & 40, several York extension clubs, the Women's Club of Bradshaw, and was district president of the Arts in Women's Club.

Survivors include her son, Lanny (Caroline) Fenster of Jonesboro, Ga.; a daughter, Karen (Gary) Lay of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Devon (Marie) McGraw, Laura Noah, Stacy (Matthew) DeCesaro, all of Atlanta, Ga., Chad Lay and Andria Lay of Lincoln; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and two brothers, Raymond and Herman Hines.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 2, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with burial in Greenwood cemetery, York. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m., Saturday, and 1-9 p.m., Sunday at Metz Mortuary in York, which is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Ralph E. O'Connor

Grafton resident, 81

Ralph E. O'Connor, 81, of Grafton, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, in Grafton.

He was born on July 15, 1921, at Fairmont, the son of Patrick and Mary (Murphy) O'Connor.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Grafton; nieces and nephews.

A Rosary Service will be held at 7 p.m., on Sunday, at St. Helena's Catholic Church. Visitation will begin Sunday from 1-5: 30 p.m., at Farmer and Son Funeral Home, then at the church for the Rosary and prior to the funeral Mass.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 2, at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Grafton. Graveside services will be held at 2: 30 p.m., Monday, at the Lincoln Memorial Park in Lincoln. Those who attend should enter Gate Number Two. Officiating will be Father Mark Pfeiffer and Father Michael Harter S.J.

Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Donald J. Boyce

Lincoln resident, 75

Donald J. Boyce, 75, of Lincoln died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, in Lincoln.

He was born April 23, 1927, in Wayne, the son of Collier J. and Alice May (Martin) Boyce.

He worked as a regional sales representative for the Stetson Hat Company for 22 years; and worked in retail clothing from 1946-1966 in Wayne, Lincoln, Hastings and Smith Center, Kan.

He was a charter member of the St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, the Lincoln Liberty Masonic Lodge 300, Scottish Rite, Sesostris Temple of the Shrine, American Legion Post #3 in Lincoln, and the VFW Post 05296 in Wayne.

He is survived by his sons, Roger D. (Janet) Boyce of Cokato, Minn., and Ronald A. Boyce of Lincoln; his ex-wife and close friend, Luella M. Marra of Wayne; grandchildren, Christopher Alan, Alexander Irwin and Jennifer Mae Boyce of Cokato, Minn.; brothers, Richard (Marilyn) Boyce of Athens, Ill., Larry (Rita) Boyce of Tulsa, Okla., and Robert (Perri Ann) Boyce of Sioux City, Iowa; sisters, Linda Kay (James Martindale of York and Lois (Vernon) Mello of Hoskins; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mylet; and two brothers, Kenneth and Terry Lee.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 30, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Dan Cosson officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery in Wayne. Pallbearers were Christopher and Alexander Boyce, Brent and LaVerle Miller and Matthew and Ryan Martindale.

Mayvis Pauls

Polk resident, 68

Mayvis Rene Pauls, 68, of Polk, died at Bryan LGH in Lincoln on Friday, Nov. 29, 2002.

She was born on May 24, 1934 in Goltry, Okla., to John and Irene (Eck) Becker. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Fairview, Okla., where she completed her education. On June 8, 1952 Mayvis Becker and Willis Pauls were united in marriage at Orienta, Okla. They lived in Fairview and Mayvis worked at the Ideal Grocery.

In 1966, they moved to Omaha and Mayvis received her training to be a surgical tech at St. Joseph's Hospital. After completing her training, she worked at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1971, they left Omaha to go to Funk to pastor at the Evangelical Free Church there. Mayvis worked at the Phelp's County Memorial Hospital in Holdrege.

They left Funk in 1975 to go to Polk and serve the Evangelical Free Church there. Mayvis worked for a short time at Aurora Memorial Hospital before going to Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. She worked there for 20 years and retired in 2001.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Stromsburg, the Free Church Women's Ministry, the Women's Club in Polk, and a birthday club. She enjoyed making ceramics and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband Rev. Willis Pauls of Polk; two daughters, Saundra (Rickie) Burks of Polk, Patricia Lofquist and friend Tom Pierson of Lincoln; one son, David (Becky) Pauls of Maize, Kan.; three brothers, Robert (Alice) Becker, Arthur Becker and Leo (Pauline) Becker both of Enid, Okla.; John (Malinda) Becker of Bentonville, Ark.; one sister, Vivian and Phil Biles of Sulphur, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Bryan Lofquist, Daniel and Jessica Lofquist, Dustin and Kim Lofquist, Daphne Lofquist, Christopher Burks, Stephanie and Zachary Pauls, and two great-grandchildren, Mason Lofquist and Taylor Burks.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be Monday, Dec. 2, at 2: 30 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Stromsburg with Rev. Kerry Relihan officiating. Burial will be in the Swede Plain cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Sunday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Solt Funeral Home of Polk is in charge of the arrangements.

Wanda M. Collingham

Bradshaw resident, 77
Wanda M. Collingham, 77, of Bradshaw died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, in York.

She was born Nov. 22, 1925, on a farm in York County near Waco to Clarence A. and Mae L. (Heitt) Reisinger. She was a 1943 graduate of Waco High School and married Fred Collingham on July 6, 1945, at Waco. She was a homemaker and also drove a school bus for 14 years. She was a member of the Bradshaw United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, the U.M.W., and was a former member and secretary on the Plainfield cemetery Board.

Survivors include her husband, Fred of Bradshaw; four daughters, Diana (Milford) Mills of Glasco, Kan., Teresa (Dwayne) Endorf of Alexandria, Neb., Waunita Slater of Omaha, and Brenda Wolfe of Bradshaw; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Winnona Downer of Grand Island, Lois (Gene) Orbin of Friend, and Merna (John) Coon of York; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Collingham of Topeka, Kan.

Preceding her in death were her parents, son (Clarence) and stepmother (Beulah Reisinger).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Plainfield cemetery west of Bradshaw. Memorials are suggested to the church. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, and 6 to 9 p.m., Thursday, at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Willard Graham

Duncan resident, 72
Willard Lee Graham, 72, of Duncan, Neb., longtime York resident, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001 at Duncan. Service information will appear in the Wednesday edition of the News-Times. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Hoffer

Stromsburg resident, 90
Helen M. Hoffer, 90, of Stromsburg, formerly of Gresham, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Stromsburg.

She was born Aug. 22, 1912, at Gresham. On Jan. 30, 1931, she was married to Bruce B. Hoffer at Belleville, Kan. She was a former member of the United Methodist Church at Gresham.

She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Kay (Paul) Koski of Gladstone, Mo.; a son-in-law, Daryl Bell of Lincoln and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and a granddaughter.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10: 30 a.m., Monday, at the Cedar Lawn cemetery in Gresham with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at Metz Mortuary in York. Memorials may be directed to the donor's favorite charity.

Ellen L. Rhodes

Utica resident, 92
Ellen L. Rhodes, 92, of Utica, widow of Harold Rhodes, died Sept. 13, 2002, in Utica.

She was born May 9, 1910, in Marquette. She graduated from Marquette High School in 1928 and attended Kearney College.

She married Harold Rhodes on June 3, 1931, in Marquette. They farmed north of Utica until their retirement. She was a member of Eastern Star Chapter #199.

Survivors include her sons, Robert (Roma) Rhodes of Exeter, John (Barbara) Rhodes of Utica; grandchildren, Sue Ellen (Vern) Kittinger, Steve (Cathy) Rhodes, Mike (Christi) Neal, Cathy (Bill) Munger and Sue Neal; great-grandchildren, Jenna and Landon Rhodes, Patrick, Sean and Megan Neal. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Laura (Jensen) Esakson; husband, Harold; sister, Esther Stewart.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17 2002, at 11 a.m. in United Methodist Church in Utica with the Rev. David Masten officiating. There will be an Eastern Star Service. Visitation was scheduled for Sunday from 6 to 8: 30 p.m. and Monday from 8: 30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The family will meet relatives and friends from 6: 30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Volzke Mortuary in Seward. There will be visitation also on Tuesday one hour at the church before the services. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Exeter cemetery in Exeter.
