She accepted Christ as her savior when she was 12 years of age at the Evangelical United Brethren Church near her home. She received her elementary education in country schools and graduated from Archer High School with the class of 1942. After high school she worked in the Aerospace Industry in California during the war years.

On June 22, 1947, Dorothy was united in marriage to Frank Martin Scharvin and to this union five children were born: Nancy, Janet, Ronnie, Linda and Kathy. Dorothy and Frank purchased several meat locker plants in Boone County, Neb., from 1948 to 1955. In 1956 the family moved to Oxford where they built the Oxford Locker after the closing of the Swanson Plant. As a family they worked hard to provide service for Oxford and the surrounding communities. The business was well known for their smoked meats and deer and poultry processing. The pace slowed in 1981 when they sold their business and devoted their lives to Mid-Nebraska Individual Services for eight years, which provided housing for developmentally disabled adult men. Dorothy enjoyed her time working in the Oxford School Elementary Department. She also maintained some rental property until the time of her death. Her life changed dramatically in 1988 when her husband died. Helping to fill the void was her granddaughter Samantha Scharvin who spent many years in her loving care.

Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oxford for 66 years. She was a Cub Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, the president of the United Methodist Women, member of the Wednesday Club for 40 years, member of the Dorothy Club and she sold Sarah Coventry Jewelry for several years.

She was proud of her children, spending time with her family at Harlan County Lake fishing and water skiing, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her strong faith carried her through many trials in life. She loved her church, flowers and gardening, the fall, cooking, Nebraska and Nebraska football, playing cards and reading to the seniors at the nursing home. Carried from her childhood, and passed on to her children was a great value in hard work.

She leaves to mourn her passing four daughters: Nancy (Bob) Cockle of Raymond, Janet (Dave) Bridges of York, Linda (Doug) Frank of McCook, Kathy (Bob) Felker of McCook; one son: Ronnie (Robyn) Scharvin of Oxford; ten grandchildren: Matthew (Kristie) Bridges of Lincoln, Jason (Shannon) Cockle of Beaver Lake, Annika (James) Nieman of Lincoln, Kristine (Taylor) Frank of McCook, Joshua (Mindi) Bridges of Fremont, Lacey (Jeff) Vanderbeek of Bellevue, Thomas (Sarah) Cockle of Stockton, Calif., Samantha (Sydney) Scharvin of Oxford; six great-grandchildren: Jacob Cockle of Beaver Lake, Austin and Haylee Bridges of Lincoln, Zachary, Colton and Mason Nieman of Lincoln, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established in her memory.
