Harrifeld, Bernard "Ben" L., 74, of Lincoln, the most important man in the world - Dad - died Sunday, 9/15/02, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital. Born rural Plymouth (7/27/28). He was known as Bernard to his family, "Ben" to his classmates in Plymouth, "Bernie" to his co-workers in Crete and friends in Lincoln, "Louie" to his mom, and "Pete" to his dad. We are not making this up.

Attended District 68 country school near Plymouth and graduated Plymouth High School, 1945. Served, U.S. Army, 1951-53, stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio TX. In 1960 the family moved to York, where Bernard worked for Metz Mortuary as an embalmer, funeral director, and ambulance driver. His favorite instrument was the tenor sax.

His hobbies included collecting automobiles, attending auctions, shooting the breeze at Shoemaker's, and spoiling his children. Dad was always there to lend a hand. Imagine getting off work after a snowstorm to find that your car was the only one in the entire parking lot to have been scraped clean. Dad was there. Or to go home after work on a 90-degree day and find that every square inch of your property was watered by hand for seven hours and that Dad had one terrific farmer's tan. Dad was there.

Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer Sept. 24, 2001. He underwent numerous radiation and chemotherapy treatments, including a string of 10 daily treatments over the Christmas period, the last one ending just two hours before he left on a rail trip to the Rose Bowl.

In mid-February he began weekly chemo treatments, which continued until July 19, 2002. He and Eleanor celebrated their 49th anniversary three times between May and June. A heart attack on his 74th birthday landed him in the hospital. Rehabilitation was discontinued Aug. 23. A birthday celebration was held Sept. 2, and Dad quietly passed away in his sleep at 11: 08 pm, Sept. 15.
