Russell Arlin Obermier
Colorado resident, 80
Russell Arlin Obermier, 80, of Julesburg, Colo., died March 16, 2002, at the Sedgwick County Memorial Hospital.

He was born Feb. 7, 1922, to Walter and Anna Finke Obermier, the third of 11 children, all born at their home in Waco. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in March of 1922. He was confirmed April 14, 1935. He attended country school south of Waco.

Russ worked for a year and a half in Utica as a John Deere mechanic for John P. Hanson. He left home in the early 1940s to join the Marines. Most of his tour of duty was spent on the West Coast. After receiving his discharge in 1945, he moved west for health reasons. Mid-August found him on Highway 6, traveling through Holyoke. The sign pointing to Julesburg, 32 miles north, caught his attention. He'd read about Julesburg in old western novels and decided to look over the town.

For a short time he worked for area farmers. On Oct. 1, 1945, he went to work for Dave Thiesen's Socony Vacuum White Eagle service as a bulk truck driver, earning $35 a week. White Eagle eventually merged with Mobil Oil Company.

On May of 1946, he opened the Mobil station in Sedgwick. He operated this station until May 1, 1949, when he became employed by Sedgwick County Road and Bridge for one and a half years as a maintainer operator.

While working in the Sedgwick area, Russ met his future wife, Helen Louise Price (Snick). They were united in marriage at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Julesburg on Sept. 4, 1949. The couple moved to Julesburg in January 1951 where they have resided since.

Russ took over management of Socony Vacuum Oil Company bulk plant in Julesburg. He purchased the service station from Leland Austin in 1957. He operated H & R Oil Company until his retirement in 1998. He was a Mobil and U-Haul dealer for over 30 years. In 1979, Mobil withdrew from Colorado. He then signed on with Sinclair. For years people still wrote checks to Mobil or gave directions using the Mobil station as a point of reference.

The couple was blessed with three children, Gary Allen, Janet Lynne and Kenneth Bruce.

Russ was a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, and Julesburg, Sedgwick and Utica fire departments. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, holding various offices.

Russ was noted for his sharp wit and keen sense of humor. The service station was the hub for pitch games and many lively discussions. He loved to read and do crossword puzzles. One could set clocks by Russ and Helen's nightly cruise around Julesburg in "Old Blue, " their pickup.

Russ was affectionately known as "the Bear." He was actually a very tender-hearted, caring person.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and two children, Janet and Kenny.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years; son Gary and his wife Beanie; two sisters, Viola Phillips of Waco and Reola and husband Walter Brahmstedt of Garden Prairie, Ill.; four brothers, Arlin and wife Nadine of Reed City, Mich., Virgil and wife Vivian of York, Rex and wife Myrna of York, and Bill and wife Shirley of Waco; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Services were held at 10: 30 a.m. today (Tuesday) at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Julesburg with the Rev. Trenton Cristensen officiating. Visitation was Monday from noon to 8 p.m. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Russell Obermier, c/o St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Austin Funeral Home in Julesburg is in charge of arrangements.
