James Smith

Milford resident, 71
James (Jim) D. Smith, age 71, of Milford, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Lincoln.

He was born Oct. 11, 1931, in Chase County, Neb., to James P. and Violet (Sandall) Smith. He graduated from York High School in 1949 and then served with the Co. B 82nd Airborne Div. 307 Airborne Engineer Battalion during the Korean Conflict. Following his service time he was employed by Consumers Public Power as a lineman. In 1973 he was promoted to superintendent for N.P.P.D. in Milford.

He served as president of the Milford Chamber of Commerce for one year followed by two years on the board. He retired from N.P.P.D. and continued to live in Milford. He was also a volunteer firefighter in Milford and enjoyed playing golf. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York.

He is survived by a daughter, Linda (Frank) Klaczik of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Doris (Kenny) Miller of Lincoln; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a special friend, Mary Meyer of Seward; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister LaWanna, brother Paul and a half-sister, Shirley.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10: 30 a.m. Saturday at the Metz Chapel with the Rev. Dick Woolard officiating. Burial will be in the Bethesda Lutheran cemetery west of York. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. Thursday at Metz Mortuary in York.

Memorials may be directed to his sister Doris Miller at 8021 Cheney Ridge Rd., Lincoln, NE 68516.

Velma Slot

McCool resident, 87
Velma L. Slot, 87 of McCool Junction, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at Fairmont.

She was born Dec. 24, 1915 at Beatrice, to Frederick and Ella Rose (Coonley) Winkle. On March 31, 1942 she was married to John E. Slot at Beatrice.

Survivors include her husband John of McCool Jct; son, Edward and his wife Stella of Louisburg, Kan.; four daughters, Eloise Wiebe of Portland, Ore., Alice and her husband, John White of Bakersfield, Calif., Beth and her husband, Bob, Deitz of Alma, and Catherine and her husband Richard Petrie of Omaha. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her brother, Glen, and his wife, Jo, Winkle of Marietta, Ark.; and several cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the McCool United Methodist Church with the Rev. Betsy Galloway-Carew. Visitation will begin Monday at 9 a.m.

Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Chuck Komarek

Colorado resident, 45
Charles Lee "Chuck" Komarek died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at the Northern Colorado Medical Center at Greeley, Colo., after an 11-month battle with brain cancer.

Chuck was born at York on Aug. 31, 1957, to Charline (Fougeron) Komarek and Rodney Komarek. The family lived at their farm home east of Fairmont where Chuck attended grade school and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1975.

After high school he worked for Stejskal Drilling of Exeter and later enrolled in welding technology at Milford Tech School, Milford. He worked for L. J. Webb Construction at Geneva before moving to Denver, Colo., in 1981. He worked as a salesman in Colorado selling welding supplies and equipment until illness forced his retirement in April 2002. He lived at Longmont, Colo., for many years and was living at his rural Platteville, Colo., home at the time of his illness.

Chuck enjoyed his family, the many people he met through his work and deer and elk hunting with his friends.

He leaves his mother and stepfather, Charline and Al Tunink of Mitchell; sister, Terri Johnson of Fullerton; brother Kelly (Jennifer) Komarek of Scottsbluff; sister, Tracy (Tim) Carlton of Polk; nieces and nephews, Nathaniel and Olivia Johnson of Fullerton, Danika and Y-Vonne Wirrick of Polk, Kelsey and Megan Komarek of Scottsbluff; aunts and uncles, Chan and Mynette Komarek of Grand Island, Eugene and Evelyn Fougeron of Pleasant Dale, Irene Hansen of Mesa, Ariz.; and many cousins.

He also leaves to mourn his death his best friends, caregivers and hunting companions Mike, Kerrey and Glenn in Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rodney Komarek; grandparents, Frank and Mildred Komarek, and Charles and Maye Fougeron; and uncle, Edward Komarek.

Cremation was performed. The family will hold a celebration of his life at a later date in eastern Nebraska.

Mary L. White

York resident, 76
Mary L. White, 76, of York, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003.

She was born Feb. 12, 1927, at Willard, Colo., in a sod house to Clinton T. and Blanche A. (Meyer) Fitch. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York and was a former school teacher, having taught in rural Iowa for a few years. On June 12, 1946, she married Arnold White at Papillion. They moved to York where she and her husband owned and operated White's Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Services for many years. She was an avid reader and bird ethusiast, and enjoyed quilting and gardening.

She is survived by four daughters, Anita (Greg) Barth of Lincoln, Patricia (Rick) Watson of Fremont, Lynn (Ira) Joseph of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Brenda (Ron) Zahller of Yuma, Colo.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Victor Fitch of Logan, Iowa; two sisters, Virginia (Paul) Hand and Faye (Ron) Jones, all of Missouri Valley, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Rosemary Fitch of Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the Metz Chapel with Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday at the Harris Grove cemetery in Logan, Iowa. Visitation will be after 1 p.m., Monday. Memorials may be directed to the National Kidney Foundation. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Roger Clark

York resident, 72
Roger Clark, age 72 of York, longtime York businessman, died Saturday in Knoxville, Iowa. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary at York.

Richard "Dick" Heser

Seward resident, 88
Richard "Dick" Heser, 88, of Seward died March 22, 2003.

He was born May 27, 1914. He was a retired farmer, a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward, a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing where he at one time served as trustee, a former member of the School Board and Elevator Board, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, York Council.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Anna (Buller) Heser; and a sister, Frances Heser.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Heser of Seward; children, spouses and their families, daughter, Pat and Ted Payne of Seward; son, Mike Heser of Beaver Crossing and his children, Simone and Scott Vampola and their children, Joseph, Noelle and Michael Vampola, Grant and Hollie Heser and their children, Jacob and Nicholas Heser, Sarah Heser; son, Tom Heser and his children, Rachel Heser and Chad Heser; daughter, Joanie and Jay Peters, Lincoln, and their son, Jason Peters; daughter, Rita and Scott Kment, Beaver Crossing, and children, Matt Dvorak, Cody Dvorak, Sidney Kment, Logan Kment; son, Mark and Kelly Heser and their son, Ethan Heser.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Seward with celebrants Rev. Father Brad Zitek and Rev. Father Maurice Current.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward and one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday. A Rosary prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Beaver Crossing. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice in care of the Heser family.

Donald Watt

York resident, 92
Donald D. Watt, 92, of York died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in York.

He was born on a farm west of York to Nicholas "Perley" and Sadie (Towle) Watt on Oct. 28, 1910. He attended York High School and was married to Arleen Lunney in Seward on June 3, 1931. Watt was a longtime York County farmer and cattle feeder. He retired from farming in 1967. In 1969, he managed the pro shop at the York Country Club. In 1973 he retired from the pro shop to enjoy his passion of golf.

He is survived by his wife, Arleen; daughter, Soni (Rod) Anderson of Okinawa, Japan; and son, Terry (Judy) Watt of York. Also surviving are four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters,

one son and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 2 pm. at the

First United Methodist Church of York with Rev. Ralph Ford.

Burial will be at the Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church.

Dolan C. Gray

York resident, 68

Dolan C. Gray, 68, of York died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at his home near York. He was born Dec. 4, 1934, on a farm near Bradshaw to Harry and Eleanora (Stettner) Gray. Dolan farmed and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by one brother, Max Gray and his wife, Willa Mae; one sister, Bonnie and her husband, Earl Redding, all of York; and three nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Keith Bateman officiating. Burial will be in Arborville cemetery near Polk. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m., Wednesday, at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Victor J. Krumbach

Shelby resident, 87
Victor J. Krumbach, 87, of Shelby died on Feb. 18, 2003, at Osceola Good Samaritan Center.

He was born to Erasmus and Louise (Gondringer) Krumbach. He attended Victor School south of Shelby. He was married to Wilma Hiemer on Aug. 6, 1940, in Shelby. They farmed south of Shelby and retired to Shelby in 1991. He was a member of the Farmers Union, A.S.C. Committee, and the Fairview School Board, and was a Little League Baseball Coach in Shelby.

He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and served many years as a church board member.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma of Shelby; son, Jim (Eileen) of Shelby; three daughters, Pat Yochum of Lincoln, Barbara Krumbach of Aurora, Colo., Beverly (Don) Levens of Plymouth, Minn.; two brotheres, Francis and John Krumbach, both of Shelby; three sisters, Irene Pandorf of Shelby, Mary Kula of Columbus, Margaret (Don) Zima of David City; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Albert Krumbach; granddaughter Katrina Yochum.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with the Rev. Robert McDermott officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5: 30 p.m. on Thursday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Shelby. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery in Shelby. Memorials may be sent in care of the family.

Bret Ehlers

Bradshaw resident, 37
Bret Ehlers, 37, of Bradshaw, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at York. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in York. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Lorene M. Charlton

Former York resident, 81

Lorene M. Charlton, 81, of Lincoln and former longtime York resident, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Lincoln.
She was born at McCool Junction on June 8, 1921 to George and Mathilda (Rich) Moyer and was a graduate of McCool High School.

She married Scott H. Charlton on Sept. 28, 1941 and they made their home in York.

Survivors include her two daughters, Miriam Kay and her husband Dale Miller of Lincoln and Deborah and her husband Cal Goodman of Olathe, Kan.; grandsons, Greg (Brooke) Miller of Gretna, Kent (Terri) Heiden of Holstein, and Clinton (Erin) Heiden of Lincoln; granddaughters, Stephanie (Jim) Coder of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Brenda Miller and her fiance' Kevin Hearty of Gilbert, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Scheiler Koch, Madison and MacKenzie Coder, Logan Miller, Colt John and Weston Heiden, Zackary, Makenna and Ashley Heiden.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10: 30 a.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Dick Woolard. Burial will be at the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9-9 at Metz and Thursday until services at the Church.

Josephine Kuta

York resident, 95

Josephine M. "Josie" Kuta, 95, of York, and formerly of Loup City, passed away at The Hearthstone Care Center in York on Thursday morning, Jan. 23, 2003, where she had been a resident for nearly seven years.
Josephine was born on March 3, 1907 at Loup City to John J. and Elizabeth (Gappa) Badura. She was united in marriage to Frank L. Kuta on Oct. 20, 1931 at Loup City, where the couple farmed for many years. Josephine was a lifelong member of St. Josephat's Catholic Church in Loup City, where she was a member of the Altar Society.

Survivors include her daughter, Maxine (and her husband, Don) Osentowski of York; two sons: Raymond (and his wife, Virginia) Kuta of Lincoln, and Don (and his wife, Darlene) Kuta of Bella Vista, Ark.; eight grandchildren, Allen and Gary Osentowski, both of York, Donna Peters of Lincoln, Natalie Kuta of California, Julie Kuta of Lincoln, Kelly Keown of Omaha, Kevin Kuta of Minnesota, and Kerry Hensley of New Mexico; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-grand-stepson and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Smedra and Florence Chilewski, both of Loup City; many nieces and nephews.

Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank L. Kuta in 1995, and 14 brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10: 30 a.m., on Monday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be directed to St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Geraldine Pieper

York resident, 71

Geraldine E. Pieper, 71, of York, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at York.
She was born April 28, 1931 in Utica to Henry and Vera (Beckman) Bredow and was a graduate of the Utica High School. She was married to Wayne E. Pieper in Utica on Oct. 1, 1952 and they lived in Goehner until 1966 when they moved to York. Geraldine was active in Pieper Plumbing and Well Drilling with her husband Wayne. She was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church and the LWML.

She is survived by her husband Wayne of York; son, Jon and his wife Stacy Pieper of York; a daughter Katherine and her husband Joseph DeSantiago of Seward; five grandchildren, Krystal, Lynn and Jennifer DeSantiago and Katilyn and Shelbi Pieper. Also surviving is her sister, Marjorie Bredow of York.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Art Schauer. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery of York. Memorials may be directed to the Church or family. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Kosier

York resident, 84
Irene Kosier, 84, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at York.

She was born Nov. 16, 1917, at Glenwood, Iowa, to Phillip and Mabel Irene (Cogley) Briley. On Sept. 19, 1947, she was married to Nicholas R. (Nick) Kosier at Glenwood, Iowa, and they lived their entire married lives in Hammond, Ind. Nick died in January of 1999 and Irene just recently came to York to be with her sister.

Survivors include her sister, Alice (Stanley) Tompkins of York; nephew, Rev. Russell (Connie) Tompkins of Omaha; nieces, Rita (Don) Ehly of Lincoln, Renee (Rick) Rook of Junction City, Kan., Dr. Martha Mechei of Hammond, Ind., Janet (Art) Savage of Valparaiso, Ind., Margaret (Angelo) Guerriero of Dearborn, Mich., Jean (Bill) Merritt of Trenton, Mich., Diane (Larry) Jackson of Trenton, Mich., and Irene Anicich of California. Also surviving are her sister-in-law Stella (James) Mechei of Hessville, Ind.; her brother-in-law George (Grace) Kosier of Poplarville, Miss.; and many great nieces and great nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford. Further services and burial will be held next Tuesday in Hammond, Ind. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday.
