Carl Gestrine

Stromsburg resident, 93

Carl Raymond Gestrine, 93, of Stromsburg died March 15, 2003, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
He was born Aug. 11, 1909, near Clarks in Polk County to John and Hulda (Stohl) Gestrine. Carl spent his life at various jobs until he became an electrician. He wired many homes for the R.E.A. Later he helped build homes with his brother John and also for Harry Hahn at Stromsburg.

Carl was united in marriage to Maxine Throckmorton on June 30, 1960, at Columbus and they spent 30 years together.

They lived in various new homes in Osceola and Stromsburg which they built and sold. Maxine died Oct. 25, 1990. Raymond then moved to Swede Haven in November of 1990.

He is survived by a sister, Beulah Johnson of Stromsburg; stepson Lee Adams of York; several step-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine; his parents; five brothers, Severt, Martin, John, Walter and Lester; five sisters, Ellen Oquist, Amanda Thelander, Edna Gestrine, Margaret Johnson, Nina Berger and Ruth Gestrine.

Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Services will be held Thursday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home with Pastor Donna Durrette officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Burial will be in the Swede Home cemetery.

Cora Tucker

Fairmont resident, 81

Cora E. "Pat" Tucker, 81, of Fairmont, passed away at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora on Thursday afternoon, March 20, 2003.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete as of presstime. A complete obituary notice will appear in a future edition. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel Winter

Kansas resident, 82

Samuel Paul Winter, 82, of Effingham, Kan., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont, Kan.
Gertrude, his widow, is a relative of the wife of the late Charles Richert who lived in York County in the 1920s and 1930s.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude; son, Howard (Deb) Winter of Altamont; daughter, Patricia (Larry) Milleville of Effingham; five grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; four nieces; two nephews.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran Church Building Fund in Effingham.

Helen Quiring

Henderson resident, 92

Helen Quiring, 92, of Henderson, died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Henderson.
She was born April 27, 1910, in Oklahoma to Frank and Agnes (Kornelson) Martens. She was a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church in Henderson and enjoyed sewing.

On March 29, 1931, she was married to Jacob T. Quiring at Henderson.

She is survived by three sons, Lavern (Mariann) Quiring of Hampton, Gerald (Saundra) Quiring of Topeka, Kan., and Gordon (Pauline) Quiring of Hampton; one daughter, Lavina (Allen) Epp of Emporia, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday at the Mennonite Brethren Church in Henderson. Burial will be at the M.B. cemetery at Henderson. Visitation will be after 5 p.m., Monday, at Metz Mortuary in Henderson. Memorials may be directed to the Mennonite Brethren Seminary in care of the family.

Harold Pheasant

Lincoln resident, 89

Harold E. Pheasant, 89, of Lincoln died March 14, 2003.
He was born June 3, 1913, in Beatrice to Guy and Mary (McClure) Pheasant. He served in the U.S. Army and was a WWII veteran. He was a retired accountant for Central Telephone and Utilities. He was a member of the Church of Christ, serving as elder and a former member of the Lincoln Sertoma Club and the York College Board of Trustees.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Jean L. (Richard W.) Laws of Lincoln; grandsons, Kevin R. (Leslie) of Ozark, Mo., Kenneth S. of Lincoln, Kyle B. and fiancee Alison Johnson of Searcy, Ark., Kurt M., Kirby S., and Korey S., all of Lincoln; granddaughter, Katie (Christopher) Reinmiller of Lincoln; great-granddaughter, Whitney L. Reinmiller.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 18, at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home at 6800 S. 14th, with Rev. Jim Tuttle officiating. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Park cemetery. There will be military honors by the Fort Riley, Kan., Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and visitation from 9 a.m. until services on Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to York College at 1125 E. 8, York.

Charles C. Phillips

Dunn, N.C., resident
Charles C. Phillips, 72, of Dunn, N.C., died Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Ervin, N.C., after a short illness. He was born Nov. 26, 1930, to Andrew Phillips and Lillian Terv Phillips. After the death of his father when Charles was 13, he became the wage earner of the family by working in the Ervin Cotton Mills and later started his own trucking company doing long hauls along the entire East Coast.

On Jan. 20, 1963, he married Viola Obermier Terv of Dunn, N.C.

He is survived by his mother, Lillian Phillips of Morristown; one sister, Peggy Kirk of Morristown; his wife, Viola Phillips of Waco; four stepchildren, Pernon (Joyce) Terv of Rock Island, Ill., Austin (Jackie) Terv of Dunn, N.C., Viona (Bill) Adkisson of Elmwood, Tenn., and Latitia (Thomas) Leishman of Willsville, Utah; 16 step-grandchildren and 33 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew; one sister, Gladys; and one brother, Shelton.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 16, 2003, at 3: 30 p.m. in the Spring Branch Baptist Church of Dunn, N.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Melvin Dey

Gresham resident, 93
Melvin Detrick Dey, 93, of Gresham died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at Seward.

He was born Nov. 22, 1909, at Gresham to Herman F. and Alma (Lintelman) Dey. Melvin was a graduate of Gresham High School and was married to Helen Walford at Gresham on Aug. 5, 1931, and they lived and farmed near Gresham. Helen died in January of 1979. Melvin married Phyllis Wilder Rhodes at York on March 10, 1980. He was a member of the Gresham Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Gresham; two sons, M. Douglas and his wife Marilyn Dey, Jim and his wife Linda Dey, all of Gresham; a stepson, Cyril and his wife Shirley Rhodes of Gresham; a stepdaughter, Sandra Bryant of Grand Island; four grandchildren, Kim and her husband Allen Richters of Beaver Crossing, Mark and his wife Tera Dey of Gresham, John and his wife Rita Dey of Lincoln, and Jenny Dey of Gresham; three great-grandchildren, Bailey, Garrett and Grant Richters of Beaver Crossing; a brother-in-law, Carl Irmer; eight step-grandchildren, Lisa and her husband Kurt Tobey of Waco, Kurt and his wife Krystal Rhodes, and Jim Rhodes, all of Gresham, Rich and his wife Kathy Davidson of Grand Island, Kip Davidson of Scottsdale, Ariz., Renee Steider of York, Kim Nejezchleb of Grand Island, and Michelle and her husband Jason Hatch, also of Grand Island; 13 step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Edna Irmer, Birdean Semin and Margaret Dey.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Gresham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Noel Dekalb. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn cemetery in Gresham. Memorials may be directed to the Gresham Presbyterian Church or the Gresham Fire Department. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday with family greeting friends on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Norma J. Pauly

York resident, 69
Norma J. Pauly, 69, of York died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in York. She was born May 24, 1933, in Clarks to Henry and Bertha (Harrison) Pickrel. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. Before retiring she worked for Burn Bros. Truck Stop Restaurant at the I-80 interchange at Waco.

She is survived by one son, Raymond Lorang and fiancee', Teresa Johnson of Waco; five daughters, Karla (Dan) Noble of Ulysses, Claudia Foreman of York and special friend, Mark Sackschewsky, Mona (Roger) Lambert of York, Myrna Heins of Osceola and Brenda Pauly of York; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Emma Stromberg of Polk, Louise PIckrel of Central City and Phyllis HIlderbrand of David City; nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two husbands; an infant daughter; two brothers; two step-sisters; two step-brothers; four brothers-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with family greeting friends from 7 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 9 p.m. Memorials in care of the family or to "Relay for Life." Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Dale Behnken

York resident, 68
Dale Behnken, 68, of York, formerly of Shelton, Neb., died Sunday, March 16, 2003, in York. He was born April 3, 1934, in rural York County to Charles and Mattie (Heins) Behnken.

He is survived by his wife, Donna of Kenesaw, Neb.; sons, Curtis Behnken and family of Columbus, and Craig (Tracy) Behnken of Omaha; sister, Dorothy O'Brien of York.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Wayne Behnken; sisters, Ruth Behnken, Opal Dey and Luwana Funk.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m., Wednesday, at Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery, York. The family suggests memorials to Faith Lutheran Church, 1214 Ohio, York, NE 68467. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday at Metz Mortuary in York.

Samuel Paul Winter, 82, of Effingham, Ill., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont, Ill.

Gertrude, widow of Sam Winter, is a relative of the wife of the late Charles Richert who lived in York County in the 1920s and 1930s.

He was born Dec. 27, 1920, in rural Fayette County, near Altamont, son of Charles and Bertha (Lorenz) Winter. He married Gertrude Mildred Hoffmeister on April 21, 1946, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Altamont.

He was a professional truck driver and instructor with more than four million accident-free miles in a 45-year career. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham, VFW Post 7676, Altamont, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude of Effingham; son, Howard (Deb) Winter of Altamont; daughter, Patricia (Larry) Milleville of Effingham; five grandchildren, Brian Milleville and Sara Milleville, both of Effingham, Beth Winter of Bloomington, Carrie Winter and Neil Winter, both of Altamont; sisters-in-law, Irene (Harold) Esch of Effingham, Eleonore Winter of Altamont; four nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marilyn; son-in-law, Marvin Wendling; brothers, Louis, John, Arthur; sisters, Ida Zimmerman, Julia Klitzing, and Irene Winter, who died in infancy.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 19, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Theodore Gall officiating. Burial was in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham, with military graveside rites. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church Building Fund, Lutheran Care Center, or the donor's choice.

Dr. Roberta Bayles

Georgia resident, 73
Dr. Roberta Stansberry Bayles, 73, of Decatur, Ga., died March 12, 2003, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

She was born July 4, 1929, in Norfolk to Homer and Lena (Kelly) Stansberry. She graduated from Norfolk High School, Norfolk Jr. College, University of Northern Colorado and received her master's and doctor's degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

She taught elementary school in Ord and Kearney and was a professor at Northern Arizona University, University of Kansas, University of Cincinnati, University of Atlanta, and Agnes Scott University. She had a private clinical psychology practice in Atlanta the last 30 years.

She was married to Lewis Bayles in Lawrence, Kan. She was a member of the Decatur Civic Chorus for 30 years, a member of the Red Cross Disaster Responses Network and served as a grief counselor in many areas across the U.S. and southern islands. She was a member of the Atlanta based Friendship Force and traveled to many parts of the world on its behalf including spending time with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India discussing United States and India relations and ways India could be helped. She spent a year in Japan as an exchange college professor and served as a security volunteer at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta along with counseling disaster victims after the Centennial Olympic Park bombing.

Surviving are daughter Debra (Scott) Johnson of Athens, Ga.; brother, Dr. Jim (Lorraine) Stansberry of York; niece Konda (Bob) Cooper of York; nephew Brooks Taylor of Corona, Calif., and grandchildren, Lena, Doyle and Daily Johnson of Athens, Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lewis, sister Jacqueline and one niece. Memorial services were held Sunday, March 16, in Atlanta.

Stella R. Smith

Missouri resident, 96
Stella R. Smith, 96, of Macks Creek, Mo., formerly of York and Henderson, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in Osage Beach, Mo.

She was born Dec. 20, 1906, in Henderson to Abraham and Anna (Petker) Buller. She was a 1925 graduate of Henderson High School and married Daniel H. Smith on Oct. 17, 1926, near Henderson. He preceded her in death in September of 1981. She was a homemaker and a member of the United Methodist Church in York.

She is survived by 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Lloyd Smith; daughters, Verona Turner and Grace Radcliff; five brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of local arrangements.
