David L. McCracken, 79

(July 11) ALLIANCE - David L. McCracken, 79, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born October 7, 1922, at Alexandria, La., to Charles and Elaine (Mayeux) McCracken.

On August 29, 1943, he married Dorothy E. Dennon at Alliance. He served in the Army Air Corps from December 1942 to October 1945. He then returned to Alliance where he has resided since. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Eagles, American Legion Post 7, Good Sam Camping Club and Golden Age. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, sons Larry McCracken and Jerry McCracken and daughter Peggy McCracken all of Alliance; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Fr. Vince Parsons officiating. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William John Boyer, 51

(July 12) GREENSBURG, Kan. - William John Boyer, 51, former resident of Alliance, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at rural Kiowa County, southwest of Greensburg, Kan. He was born Jan. 26, 1950, at Alliance. His parents were Roy Oliver and Louise Lillian (Neilsen) Boyer.

He resided in Alliance, Rushville and Hebron, Neb., before moving to Greensburg in 1986. He graduated from Rushville High School and then from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a degree in Animal Science. He married Patsy Ann Haney on Dec. 15, 1979, at Lincoln. He was office manager for Farmer's Grain and Supply of Greensburg. He was a member of Faith Tabernacle, Kansas Archeological Society, Greensburg Lions Club and had walked in "Relay for Life" as a cancer survivor for the past five years. He is survived by his wife, Patsy Ann Boyer of the home near Greensburg; father and stepmother Roy and Sue Boyer of Greensburg; two stepsons, Bob Haney of Lincoln and Mike Haney of Santa Fe, N.M.; and one stepgrandson. He also is survived by his brother, Steven Boyer of Thermopolis, Wyo.; and two sisters, Kathryn Ramsey of Thermopolis and Susan Pond of Yuma, Ariz.

Mr. Boyer's memorial service will at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Faith Tabernacle in Greensburg, with Revs. Willard Olinger and Milton Unruh officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Fleener Chapel in Greensburg. Memorials may be made to the American Heart American Cancer Society or Western Kansas Youth for Christ, in care of Fleener Funeral Home, P.O. Box 426, Greensburg, Kan. 67054.

Harold Westlake, 69

(July 12) HAY SPRINGS - Harold Westlake, 69, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at his home in Hay Springs. He was born June 4, 1932, at Clinton. His parents were Ora and Blanche (Swick) Westlake.

He served in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. He is survived by his wife, Donna Westlake of the home; one son Rick Westlake; one daughter, Sandi Abbott both of Hay Springs; and eight grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister Darlene Muenchau of Chadron.

Mr. Westlake's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 12, at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, with Pastor Rodney Long officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery at Chadron, Military honors by the Hay Springs Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for the Hay Springs Rescue Unit. Donations may be sent to Security Bank at Hay Springs, or Chamberlain Chapel, P. O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337-0970.

Stella G. Speer, 91

(July 12) LAKESIDE - Stella G. Speer, 91, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs. She was born Sept. 8, 1909, at Lakeside, Neb. Her parents were Marvin and Anna (Thies) Hunsaker.

She was a member of United Methodist Church UMW of Lakeside and 35-year member of the Women's International Bowling Congress. She is survived by her sons Wayne Speer of Lakeside and Larry Speer of Lincoln; daughter Norma Vandel of Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Mrs. Speer's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, at Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville, with Pastor Al Trucano officiating.

A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Rushville. Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church of Lakeside or American Heart Association, in care of First National Bank of Alliance.

Florence A. Marsteller, 71

(July 12) - Florence A. Marsteller, 71, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at her home. She was born Sept. 9,1930, at Lusk, Wyo. to Floyd and Ruth Hall.

Florence (Flossie) spent her childhood years at Fort Laramie, Wyo. where she attended grade school. In 1944, she moved with her family to the Hall ranch north of Harrison. She attended Sioux County High School at Harrison, graduating with the class of 1948. On July 15, 1953, she was married to John C. Marsteller, and together had four sons; John Scott, Robert Lee, and twins Mark Richard and Michael Richard. After her youngest son Mike, graduated from High School, she moved to Chadron. for two years. She then moved to Alliance to be closer to her grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Scott Marsteller and Paula Shelley, Bob and Sandy Marsteller of Alliance, Mike and Diana Marsteller of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren, Diana Marsteller of Lincoln, Shana, Sara, and Ryan Marsteller of Alliance and Mark Marsteller of Reno. She also is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Barbara Hall of West Fargo, N.D., brother- in-law, Dick Marsteller of Harrison, and many cousins nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, son Mark, and grandson Robby.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 13, at the United Methodist Church at Harrison, with Rev. Robert Todd officiating. Burial will be in the Harrison Cemetery. Memorials may be given to donors choice in Flossie's name. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd B. Langford

(July 12) FREEPORT, Texas - Floyd B. Langford died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Freeport. He was born in Box Butte County to Walter and Ada (Parkin) Langford in 1912.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and later farmed on Mirage Flats where he raised his family. He is survived by his wife, Rosie; children Everette, Donna, Floyd, Lloyd and Sandra; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother-in-law, Leonard Thomas of Alliance; neice Peggy Thomas of California, Nancy Cassel of Colorado and Helen Jamison of Alliance.

Robert R. Moran, 76

(July 12) ALLIANCE - Robert R. Moran, 76 died Friday, July 11, 2003 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. He was born November 29, 1926 in David City, Nebraska to John P. and Hazel R Moran.

He graduated from David City High School in 1944. He attended Colorado A&M and Oregon State College before entering the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1947. He graduated with his Juris Doctor degree in 1951. On December 30, 1947 he was united in marriage to Rose Ann Hiller. The family moved to Hemingford in 1951. He served as Box Butte County Attorney from 1952 to 1957. He served on the Hemingford School Board from 1954 to 1960 including serving as President from 1955 to 1958. He served as Box Butte County Attorney from 1952 to 1957 .He was a partner in the Law Firm of Gantz, Hein & Moran from 1957 to 1966. He moved to Alliance in 1961. He served as District Judge, Sixteenth Judicial District of Nebraska from 1966 until his retirement in July 31, 1992. He was also a member of the House of Delegates of Nebraska State Bar Association 1964 to 1966, President, Nebraska District Judges Association 1973, NSBA Award of Merit, 1974 and Nebraska Criminal Code Revision Committee, 1971-1972. In 1982 he served as Chief Justice, Special Nebraska Supreme Court in the State ex rel. NSBA v Green, 1982, and a member of the Impeachment Court, State v. Douglas in 1984. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Nebraska Humanities Council, trustee for Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation and a member of the Alliance Library Board. His survivors include his wife Rose Ann, children, Pat Moran of Brattleboro, VT; Peg Simpson of Littleton, CO; Steve Moran of Grand Island; Mike Moran of Erie, CO; Jim Moran of Alliance; Tim Moran of Littleton, CO; Jeff Moran of Bridgeport and Jean Vogel of Littleton, CO; 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His sister Mary Beth Kilgore of North Platte, NE; also survives him; His parents, brothers John and Richard and an infant son preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be Monday, July 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance with Father Bryan Ernest officiating. A wake service will be Sunday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. at the church. It was his wish that his body be donated for medical research at Creighton University. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Public Library or to Holy Rosary Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roy G. Meade, 76

(July 13) ALLIANCE - Roy Giles Meade, 76, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Feb. 23, 1926, at Portsmouth, Ohio, to Guy Giles and Hilda Clara (Rensvold) Meade.

At the age of three, his family moved back to the family homestead in rural Box Butte County. He and his three sisters grew up on the farm. He attended District #52 in rural Box Butte County. In 1950, he joined the U.S. Army and served with the Occupational Forces in Germany. After he left the service in 1952, he returned to the family farm where he resumed farming and shearing sheep throughout the Panhandle, Wyoming and South Dakota. On Dec. 26, 1955, he married Darlene May Finnell, a Hemingford Public School teacher, at the Hemingford Seventh-Day Adventist Church. To this union was born Janelle Jo in 1957, Jeffrey Giles in 1959 and Andrew Giles in 1961. In 1966, the family moved to Alliance where he worked as a welder for Alliance Tractor and Implement Company. In 1968, he joined Chicago Bridge and Iron Company as a welder of water towers, flat-bottom tanks and steel smokestacks. During his employment with Chicago Bridge, he traveled throughout the Midwest building many structures of this type, including an 800-foot smokestack at Monroe, Mich. In 1982, he joined Railcar Maintenance Company at Alliance, working on the repair and maintenance of rail cars. He retired from there in 1995. He enjoyed retirement, spending time on the family farm, helping neighbors and friends in agriculture, working of various craftsman projects, building projects for the church and gardening. He helped build the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Tenth and Sheridan during the time he worked for Chicago Bridge. He was a member of the Alliance Seventh-day Adventist Church, the Alliance Masonic Lodge, Alliance Scottish Rite, Cattle Capital Shrine Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He held the positions of Head Deacon, and then Associate Elder in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, John and Janelle Pyatt of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Meade and Shannon Stemm of Auburn; son, Andrew Meade of Alliance; grandson, James Pyatt of Alliance; and granddaughter, Madison Meade of Auburn. He also is survived by his sister, Delores Yoakum of Chadron; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Hilda Meade; and sisters, Irene Meade, Emily Schumacher and Lucille Dyer.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, July 15, at the Alliance Seventh-day Adventist Church, with Elder Harry Rimer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to Box Butte General Hospital or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel L. Vogel, 66

(July 15) ALLIANCE - Mabel L. Vogel, 66, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born June 30, 1936, at Grover, Colo., to David and Blanche (Meyers) Romick.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. She is survived by her sons, David Vogel of Fort Pierre, S.D., and Darrel Vogel of Alliance; daughter, Vicke Vogel of Rapid City, S.D.; and seven grandchildren. She also is survived by her brothers, Carl Romick and Howard Romick, both of Alliance; sisters, Eva Steffen of Alliance, Wilma Twombley of Eugene, Ore., and Phyllis Henkel of Bayard. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, at the East Lawn Cemetery at Minatare, with Revs. Martin T. Schnare and Richard C. Mueller officiating. Memorials may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Gordon E. Howell, 57

(July 15) ALLIANCE - Gordon E. Howell, 57, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at his home. He was born April 2, 1945, at Alliance, to Ernest L. and Elma L. (Hashman) Howell.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his sons, Michael Howell of Falls City, and Kevin Howell of Lincoln; and one granddaughter. He also is survived by his mother, Elma Howell of Alliance; and brothers, Darrell Howell and Lloyd Howell, both of Alliance. He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 16, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Stephen Roosa officiating. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Thomas Woodhouse, 45

(July 16) GORDON - Thomas Woodhouse, 45, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 21, 1957, at Gordon, to Leo and Martha (Grooms) Woodhouse.

He is survived by his parents; one sister, Susan (Edward) McDonald of Canon City, Colo.; and two nephews, Christopher McDonald of Golf Port, Miss., and Jacob McDonald of Canon City.

Mr. Woodhouse's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Oier Chapel at Gordon, with Mike Humphrey officiating. Burial will be at Niobrara View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, July 19. A memorial has been established for his family. Donations may be sent to First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343-0290.

Gerald 'Jerry' Reeves, 67

(July 17) RUSHVILLE - Gerald L. "Jerry" Reeves, 67, of Rushville, formerly of Whiteclay, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Gordon Memorial hospital. He was born Jan. 14, 1934, at Rushville. His parents were Louis E. and Carrie (Lehman) Reeves.

He farmed and ranched near Whiteclay, and loved hunting and fishing. He had been a resident of Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs and Parkview Lodge Assisted Living at Rushville. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and Farm Bureau. He is survived by his mother, Carrie Reeves of Whiteclay; one brother, Moe Reeves of Whiteclay; and two sisters, Joyce Dreyer of Rushville and Hollis Jacquot of Henderson, Nev.

Mr. Reeve's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 18, at Chamberlain Mortuary at Rushville, with the Rev. Al Trucano officiating. Burial will be in the Extension Cemetery near Whiteclay. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, July 17, at the Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville. A memorial has been established for Parkview Lodge Assisted Living or Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. Donations may be sent to the Security First Bank in Rushville or Hay Springs. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lucinda E. Scherer, 78

(July 19) GORDON - Lucinda E. Scherer, 78, of Lebanon, Ore., formerly of Gordon, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Lebanon. She was born May 13, 1923, at Columbus, Mont. Her parents were Gus D. and Beauhda Ruth (Lutzenheiser) Reinhart.

She was married to Paul Scherer. He preceded her in death in 1994. She was a graduate of the University of Montana at Havre, and received her master's Degree from the University of Southern California. She taught school at the Porcupine Day School, Wolf Creek and Rocky Ford in South Dakota. She also worked at the University of Massachussetts at Holyoke. She is survived by one son, Paul McLean of Basin, Wyo.; three daughters, Cheri Robinett of Gordon, Catherine Mason of Garden Grove, Calif., and Marlene Calicher of Lebanon, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one brother, Dick Reinhart of Yoncalla, Ore.; and three sisters, Wilma Davis of Brookings, Ore., Mary Stewart of Red Bluff, Calif., and Wanda Lacy of Auburn, Wash.

Mrs. Scherer's memorial service will be a 7 p.m., Friday, July 20, at Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Chapel at Gordon, with the Rev. Nita Gelling Cloran officiating. A memorial has been established for the Nebraska Wildlife fund. Donations may be sent to the First National Bank, P.O. Box 290, Gordon, NE 69343-0290. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
