Janet Bond

Gresham native, 88
Janet Alling Nelson Bond was born Aug. 25, 1914, to Robert and Anna Maria Nelson on a farm north of Gresham that her grandfather homesteaded after the Civil War.

Janet, the first child in their family, was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Frances; and two brothers, Harold and Arthur Nelson. Janet passed away in Fairmont, Feb. 6, 2003.

Janet completed her elementary and secondary education in the Gresham area before commencing her college education. Entering Park College, Kansas City, immediately after graduation, she transferred to the University of Nebraska for her second year. Later she completed her Bachelor's, Master's of Education/Counseling, and all but a dissertation for her Doctorate of Education at Arizona State University.

Janet taught school in the 30's in one-room schools in Polk County. During her teaching career of over 20 years, she taught Kindergarten in Utica Public School, English Literature in Central City Public School and Creative Writing/English and counseled in Scottsdale Public Schools. Many of her former students stopped to visit her in Gresham or continued to correspond with their favorite teacher. Janet was a member of the Gresham Presbyterian Church for 75 years. She was a choir leader, member of Eastern Star, and active in many other organizations.

Janet married Floyd O. Bond on May 28, 1939, in Gresham. To this union was born two sons, F. Tim and G. Buck. Tim and his wife Nancy live in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., and Gresham. Buck and his wife Earlene live in Mesa, Ariz. They have two children, Scott of New York City and Michelle of Mesa.

Floyd and Janet lived on farms in Polk/York Counties until moving to the former Miller Ranch near Central City in 1960. Their business interests included ranches/farms near Hordville and Valentine, a cattle feeding operation on the Central City property, breeding/showing Arabian and Quarter horses, and Lake Mary Ranch Camp. In 1965 the family began to winter in the Phoenix area. In 1967 Janet began to teach again at Kiva Elementary in Scottsdale which she did until her retirement in 1975 when she moved back to Gresham for the majority of each year. From 1976 until 2001, Janet wintered with Nancy and Tim in Scottsdale, then Atlanta, and finally Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.

Janet was a consummate student reading and studying for personal growth. She also loved travel and saw much of the United States and Europe. In fact, Janet's last trip before moving to Fairview Manor in Fairmont, August, 2001, was to the Eternal City of Rome, Italy in February, 2001.

Janet loved to write and has been published several times. A poem she wrote about her mother's journey to the United States from Denmark in 1902 was recently included in Rural Voices, Literature of Rural Nebraska, 2002.

Metz Mortuary handled cremation and the family is tentatively planning a service in Celebration of Her Life on Memorial weekend in May. Memorial contributions may be made in Janet's name to the Gresham Presbyterian Church.

James C. Morris

Texas resident, 59
James Clyde Morris, known to his friends as Jim, of Lexington, Texas, died at his residence on Jan. 30, 2003.

He was born Oct. 27, 1943.

Jim served in the United States Army, and then the United States Air Force for a combined total of 17 years. Following his service to his country, he became a paramedic and later a firefighter, serving the communities of Williamson County, Waller County, Washington County and finally the City of College Station. Beyond his official retirement, he served at The Emergency Services Training Institute at Texas A&M; University primarily in the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting and Recruit Training Divisions.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Morris and Dorothy Mae Cavender Morris.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Morris of Lexington; sons, Nick Morris and wife, Lisa of Taylor, Michael Morris of Lexington and daughter Mandy Morris of Lexington; grandchildren Christopher and Allison of Taylor, Michael Jr. of Lexington and Alma and Stephanie of San Marcos, and his beloved aunt, Ruth Cavender Stoddard of York.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Feb. 15, 2003, beginning at 1: 30 p.m., at the College Station Conference Center, 1300 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas. The celebration will continue on the second floor of Fitzwilly's, 303 University Drive, following the service.

Augustus M. Brown

York resident, 88

Augustus Melvin Brown, 88, of York died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Lincoln.
He was born June 14, 1914, at Page City (Logan County), Kan., to Augustus and Lillian (Kimball) Brown. Augustus was the youngest of seven children. He moved with his family to McCool Junction in 1919 and graduated from McCool Junction High School in 1931. He later served in the Conservation Corps for two years and worked in an orchard in Idaho with his brother Ted for two years before moving to California where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp.

Augustus married Rose Wurst on July 5, 1941, in Los Angeles, Calif. To this marriage three sons were born. The family moved back to York in 1946 where he farmed until retiring. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

Augustus Melvin Brown is survived by his wife Rose of York; three sons, Augustus M. (Colene) Brown Jr. of York, Carl H. (Marie) Brown of Polk and William R. Brown of York; five grandchildren, Carlene (Todd) Van Housen of Polk, Sarah (Terry) Carlstrom of Polk, Troy (Julie) Brown of Hastings, Travis Brown of Polk and Tricia (Jason) Regier of Lincoln; five great-grandchildren, Kaylee VanHousen, Riley Carlstrom, Dustin Matlock, Chandler Brown and Hayden Regier. He is also survived by brother and sisters-in-law, Ruby Sheldon of Sargent, Richard and Dian Wurst of Stromsburg, Lois Nicholson of Lincoln, Marie Carlson of Polk, and Gordon and Lillian Wurst of York; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church at York with the Rev. Ralph Ford. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Heart Fund, Kidney Foundation or Diabetes Association.

Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Frank V. Miller

York resident, 88
Frank V. Miller, 88, of York died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at York.

He was born April 15, 1914, at Edison to William V. and Edna D. (Collister) Miller. He was formerly a Lay Minister at the Southern Baptist Church in York for many years and was a current member ofEmmanuel Lutheran Church in York. He was an employee of the City of York for 23 years and had worked previously for the Burlington Railroad. He enjoyed working in his garden.

On Aug. 22, 1942, he was married to Marie Buller at Birley, Mont. She died in 1983. On July 28, 1995, he was married to Nancy Mason near McCool Junction.

He is survived by his wife Nancy of York; two sons, Melvin (Sandra) Miller of Sherman, Texas, and Vernon Miller of Marshalltown, Iowa; six granddaughters and two step-grandsons; one great-grandson; one step-great-granddaughter; daughter-in-law, Ruth Miller of Hastings.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; son, Robert; two brothers; two sisters; and a granddaughter.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Art Brinkmeyer and the Rev. Tim Marshall officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Buller

Former York resident, 73
Donald L. Buller, 73, of Lake Forest, Calif., and a former York resident, died on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in California.

He was born April 26, 1929, in Hamilton County to Abraham and Violet (Harter) Buller and was a graduate of York High School. He was employed by Standard Brands several years before leaving York.

He is survived by four stepchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, one brother, Robert Buller, and one sister Geraldine George, both of York.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, a daughter, and one brother.

There will be cremation, with private services to be held in Lake Forest at a later date.

Marjorie A. Johnson

Denver resident
Marjorie A. Johnson of Denver, Colo., died Oct. 25, 2002.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle and half sister, Betty White Plugge of Columbus.

She is survived by her brother, John B. White of McCool; her half brother, James White of Osceola; her sister, Dorothy White of Stratton, Colo.; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Oct. 30, 2002, at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Denver.

Clarence A. Walbrecht

York resident
Clarence A. Walbrecht of York died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at home. Services are pending with Lewis Funeral Chapel of York.

Virgil D. Pinneo

Arizona resident, 74

Virgil D. Pinneo, 74, of Yuma, Ariz., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at his summer home in Lincoln after a battle with cancer.
Virgil was born Nov. 4, 1928, in York to Clarence and Goldie (Bumgarner) Pinneo. He was married to Barbara (Sanburg) on May 3, 1952. They lived most of their married life in York where they raised their five children.

He worked at the York Dairy for years and at Grand Central Super Valu and Hinky Dinky grocery stores. In the years before he retired to Arizona he managed Godfather's and Valentino's for his son.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a nephew.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Yuma; two sons, Randy (Linda) Pinneo of York, Kevin (Carla) Pinneo of Lincoln; three daughters, Bonnie (Steve) Whitemore of Lincoln, Vicki (Warren) Schlueter of Bradshaw, Juli (Dean) Wilken of Lincoln; brothers-in-law, Darrel (Darlyn) Sanburg of Lincoln, Terry (Joanne) Sanburg of Yacolt, Wash., Larry Sanburg and Ray Sanburg, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Twyla (Eugene) Simpkins of Kearney; mother-in-law, Winnie Uden of Yuma, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation was held at Aspen After Care in Lincoln. A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 6, 2002, at 1: 30 p.m. at First Christian Church, 2121 N. Delaware Ave., York, with Rev. W. Ronald Johnson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice Care of Nebraska or Adopt-a-Pet of York in care of Judy or Gail Nordlund.

Ruth Oberg

Central City, 96
Ruth E. Oberg, 96, of Central City formerly of Polk, died on Monday, Dec. 16, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Ruth was born on Aug. 17, 1906 in Denver, Colo., the only child of Henry and Augusta Skoglund. As a toddler, she moved with her family to Round Rock, Texas. She graduated from high school in Round Rock and then attended Stoney Point College in Texas. On Dec. 14, 1927 Ruth E. Skoglund and Floyd M. Oberg were united in marriage at Palm Valley, near Round Rock. They made their home in Polk and Ruth was a homemaker. Floyd died on June 25, 1967. Ruth continued to live in Polk until moving to Long Term Care in Central City in June of 2002.

In 1934, Ruth became one of Jehovah's Witnesses and served actively as such until her health made it impossible to continue to be actively involved. Ruth enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and music.

Ruth is survived by her only child, a son, Mervin H. and his wife Kathleen Oberg of Polk and the family pet, Sweet Little Mopsy.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Services will be Thursday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m., at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with John Baker officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Polk cemetery.

Lynn A. Westwood

Waco resident, 66
Lynn A. Westwood, 66, of Waco died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in York.

He was born March 18, 1936, in York to Alvin and Twila (Trollope) Westwood. He was a 1954 graduate of Waco High School and married Elinor Brahmsteadt on June 17, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near York.

Lynn farmed and was a cattleman. He also owned and operated Westwood Trucking with his son, Chuck. He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in York, was a Master Mason with Utica Lodge #96 A.F.&A.M.; and a member of the Sesostris Shrine. He had his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying.

Survivors include his wife, Elinor of Waco; son, Charles (Eilene) Westwood of Stromsburg; daughters, Virlyn (Steve) Bolte of Henderson and Valerie (Mark) Kaliff of York; seven grandchildren; brother, Don (Donna) Westwood of Waco; nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in York. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, York. Memorials in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at Metz Mortuary in York, which is in charge of arrangements.

Velma B. Miltner

York resident, 72
Velma B. Miltner, 72, of York, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at York.

She was born Feb. 4, 1920, at York to Orville and Etta (Pinneo) Hoover. She was employed at J. C. Penney's in Columbus for 18 years and was a member of the Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus. She enjoyed needlework, crocheting and camping.

On Dec. 14, 1947, she was married to Wesley Miltner at York.

She is survived by one son, Terry (Rhenda) Miltner of Ardmore, Ala.; three daughters, Patricia (Darrel) Lewis of Beloit, Kan., Sharon (Ivan) Welsh of Grand Island, and Cindy (Tom) Cradick of York; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Howard (Pat) Hoover of York; two sisters, Helen (Kenny) Moe of Brewerton, N.Y., and Darlene Lewis of Kearney; one sister-in-law, Anna Hoover of York.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Mike Neely officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery near Waco. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice. Visitation begins after 1 p.m. Monday. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
