Melburne Olson

Stromsburg resident, 84
Melburne U. Olson, 84, of Stromsburg died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

He was born Jan. 16, 1918, at Stromsburg to George and Mayme (Swanson) Olson. He attended Stromsburg schools, graduating from Stromsburg High School in 1935. After high school Melburne began his lifelong farming career.

Melburne was married to Helen (Karlene) Swanson on Sept. 3, 1944, at her home in Stromsburg. To this union one daughter was born.

He farmed southeast of Stromsburg his entire life. In the early 1980s he retired from farming. His wife, Karlene, died on May 18, 1998. Melburne continued to reside on the family farm until June of 2000 when he moved to the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. He was a lifetime member of the Stromsburg Baptist Church and he was active in the church and choir. He also served as an agent and director for Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Company for a number of years.

He is survived by one daughter Kile Lindburg of Stromsburg, one grandson Shane LIndburg of Stromsburg, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one sister, Winona Nelson.

Services are Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m., at the Stromsburg Baptist Church in Stromsburg. Pastor Charles Myers will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg cemetery in Stromsburg. Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg, which is in charge of arrangements.

Ervin Volkmer

Exeter resident, 81

Ervin Volkmer, 81, of Exeter died on June 17, 2003, in Lincoln.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1921, to Ernest and Emma (Reinsch) Volkmer at Shickley, Neb.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, a veteran of World War II, a member of William Sullivan American Legion Post #218 and Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Jean of Exeter; sons, Dennis (Kathy) Volkmer of York, William "Bill" (Terri) Volkmer of York, John (Debra) Volkmer of York; daughters, Ann (John) Copple of Lincoln, Mary Wynn of Chesapeake, Va., Sarah (Fred) Analia of York, Judy Volkmer of Exeter; brothers, Roger and John Volkmer of Hastings, Merlin Volkmer of Shickley, George Volkmer of Geneva; sister, Eunice Chitwood of Denver; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; five great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church of Exeter. A Rosary Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Military graveside services will be held at Exeter cemetery. Officiating is Msgr. Ivan Vap.

Memorial services are Saturday, June 21, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Clarks with the Rev. Richard Diamond officiating. Interment will be at the Swede Home cemetery near Clarks. Memorials can be given in care of the family.

Doris Ostberg

Polk resident, 75
Doris B. Ostberg, 75, of Polk, died on Sunday, May 25, 2003, at York General Hospital.

Doris was born on July 14, 1927, in Polk County to Walter A. and Bertha (Peterson) Binford. She grew up on the family farm east of Polk, attended rural Polk County School, and graduated from Polk High School in 1944. After graduation, Doris worked for Citizen's State Bank in Polk until 1949.

On Sept. 17, 1949, Doris B. Binford and Donald L. Ostberg were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Polk. They lived near Polk and together operated their farm and seed corn business.

Doris was a member of the United Methodist Church in Polk. She was very active with the Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and helping with the Christmas Programs when her children were participating in these church activities. Doris was an active member of the Polk American Legion Auxiliary for many years. She loved outdoor activities, and enjoyed golfing, bowling, and fishing. She loved her flower garden and especially enjoyed growing roses.

Doris is survived by her husband, Don, of Polk; one daughte, Donnette (Scott) Wagner of Greenville, Texas; one son, Murray (Ann) Ostberg of Omaha; four grandchildren, Erin, Lauran, Caitlin and Erik Ostberg; one sister, Lela Ruch and her son, Doug (Lani) Ruch, all of Port Charlotte, Fla.

Preceding her in death were her parents; infant daughter, Ruth Marie; sister, Helen Burge; and a niece, Eunice Ruch.

Services will be Thursday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Polk with Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Burial will be in the Polk cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk.

Warrren DeBoer

Lincoln resident, 54
Warren DeBoer, 54, of Lincoln, died Friday, May 23, 2003, in Lincoln.

He was born the son of Delbert and Shirley (Gross) DeBoer on Feb. 10, 1949 in Lincoln. He was a member of the Lincoln Berean Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He was also a member of the NRA.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon (Schultz) DeBoer of Lincoln; sons, Titus and Silas DeBoer, both of Seward; stepchildren and their spouses, Jason and Tina Grundmann of Lincoln and Damien and Jayme Stednitz of Lubbock, Texas; stepgrandchildren, Cameron and Stephanie Schwartz of Lincoln; brothers and sisters-in-law, Les and Rita DeBoer of Cozad, Steve and Sylvia DeBoer of Hastings, Louis and Jeannie DeBoer of Lincoln and Ron and Jennifer DeBoer of Lincoln; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, May 29, at the Lincoln Berean Church. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Arrangements are being handled by the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Russell "Buzz" Learned

York resident, 93
Russell E. "Buzz" Learned, 93, of York, died Saturday, May 24, 2003 at York. Buzz was the longtime owner and operator of Buzz's Caf� and Filling Station, which later became Buzz's Motel located at the Y north of York.

Buzz was born May 11, 1910 on a farm near Utica, to Lucian G. and M. Barbara (Gutbrodt) Learned. He attended Utica School and trained to be a cook in the Civilian Conservation Corps. On Oct. 5, 1938 he married Pearl Kahler at Lincoln. Pearl died in 1954. He married Helen Graff Willard on Nov. 25, 1955 at Lincoln and they sold the motel in 1963 and moved to a farm west of York where they raised registered Angus cattle and show horses. Helen died in 1998.

Buzz is survived by his sister Angeline "Angie" Darnall of York; nephew Walt and his wife Colleen Heidbreder of York; and niece Betty and her husband Pat Dunn of Navasota, Texas.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Oscar and Warren, his sister Mabel Heidbreder and his nephew Darrell Learned.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, at 2 p.m. at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford. Burial will be at the Utica cemetery. Visitation will began Monday.

Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Norman Kath

Kansas resident, 78

Norman G. Kath, 78, of Concordia, Kan., formerly of York, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in Concordia. He was born Sept. 12, 1924, at Gresham to Albert and Wilhelmine (Stolzenburg) Kath. His first wife Shirley Anne Anderson died in 1974. He was married to Brenda Kaye Landenberger on July 1974 in Phoenix, Ariz.
Norm was a longtime businessman and was owner and operator of several restaurants including the Clubhouse Cafe in York. He also was a member and commander of the York Legion Post #19, York Elks Lodge #1024 and past member of the York Drum and Bugle Corps and York Jaycees. His early years were spent in the Lutheran Church at Gresham and the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York. He was a founding member of Joy Christian Fellowship in Aurora, Colo., and was currently a member of the New Horizon Community Church in Concordia, Kan.

He is survived by his wife Brenda of Concordia; daughters, Carol (Bill) Gority of Williamsburg, Colo., and Holly (Lonny) Ritchison of Omaha; sons, Mark Kath of York and Shane (Alicia) Landenberger of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; sisters, Gertrude Schinke of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Luella Hornyan of Aurora, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; six brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 23, at the New Horizon Community Church in Concordia. Burial in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Concordia. Memorials in care of the family. Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, 325 W. 6th, Concordia, Kan. 66901

Frances Stromsberg

Clarks resident, 90

Frances Ellen Stromberg, 90, of Clarks died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the Beverly Health Care Center of Fullerton.
She was born on July 8, 1912, in Polk County to Clifford and Iva (Beck) Branting. She attended rural Polk County School. On April 16, 1927, Frances Ellen Branting and Claude A. Stromberg were married in Osceola. In the early years of their marriage they lived in the Stromsburg and Osceola area and operated a restaurant and dance hall. They moved to Clarks in 1937 and farmed. They retired from farming in 1974 and moved in to Clarks. Mr. Stromberg died on Jan. 24, 1990. Frances lived at the Clarks Villa from 1996 until moving to Beverly Health Care in Fullerton in 2001.

Frances was a member of the Clarks United Methodist Church and she enjoyed dancing.

She is survived by two sons, Merle Stromberg of Kansas City, Kan., Dale and Lillian Stromberg of Loveland, Colo.; three daughters, Doris Mustard of Vallejo, Calif.; Loretta and Homer Killham of Grand Island; and Alberta and Jim Ellis of Hays, N.C.; two brothers, Marvin "Cotton" Branting of Polk and Bob Branting of Hastings; Betty Hancock and Annabelle Swanson of Polk; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Virginia Bratt in 2001; and three brothers, Laurel, Willard, and Mervin Stromberg, and an infant brother.

H. LeRoy Bennett

Lexington resident, 83

H. LeRoy "Roy" Bennett, 83, of Gibbon, formerly of Elwood, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
He was born on Oct. 7, 1919, in Holdrege to Arthur and Mable (Parsons) Bennett. He grew up and received his education in Holdrege. He joined the Nebraska National Guard. In 1939 his unit was called to active duty. He participated in the D-Day Normandy Landing and served in the European theater. After discharge in 1945, he returned to central Nebraska.

On Oct. 25, 1945, he and Leona Benton were married in Elwood. He worked for the Nebraska Dept. of Roads and the family moved to various central Nebraska towns where his work took him. They spent the majority of their life in the Elwood area. He retired in 1984 as supervisor after 36 1/2 years with the Department of Roads. He enjoyed the outdoors and woodworking. He and his wife moved to Gibbon in June of 2000 where they made their home. He attended the Faith United Church of Gibbon.

Survivors include his wife of Gibbon; a son, Roger (Mary) Bennett of McCook; two daughters, LeVauna (Jerome) Weismann of York, and Margaret (Hollis) Booker of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Claude of Bertrand; a sister, Grace Miller of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Services will be held Wednesday, June 11, at 11 a.m. from the Gibbon Faith United Church. The Rev. Jerry Heydenberk will officiate. Military graveside rites by the Elwood American Legion Post 290 will be held at 2 p.m. at the Elwood cemetery. No visitation is planned. The casket will be open prior to services at the church. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Sobotka

California resident, 81

Eleanor Sobotka, 81, of San Carlos, Calif., died on May 17, 2003, in San Carlos, Calif.
She was born on a farm near Gresham on July 12, 1921, to Charlie and Emma Abresch.

She was married to Ray Sobotka in San Carlos when he was in the service. They had two sons, Gary and David, both of San Carlos. Her brother, Otto, lives in Gresham.

At her request, her body was cremated. A private inurnment was held at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Ron Rosenkranz

Stromsburg resident, 58

Ronald (Ron) R. Rosenkranz, 58, of Stromsburg died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
He was born Dec. 19, 1944, at Concordia, Kan., to Garold "Bill" and DeLoris (Freeman) Rosenkranz. He attended school in Washington, Kan., graduating from Washington High School in 1962. He then attended Kansas State College.

On Aug. 8, 1965, at Washington, Kan., Ron was married to Linda Stamm. To this union, three children were born. The family lived in Aurora and Lincoln before moving to Stromsburg in 1972.

Ron worked for Kreis Drywall in Stromsburg for 10 years before beginning his career at Sundstrand in York as a gauge calibrator where he worked until the present.

Ron loved spending time with his grandchildren. He supervised and assisted his grandchildren with various construction projects in his basement. He took them fishing at the creek bridge. Among his family members he was known as a "baby man," as all the grandbabies loved being held by him. He was a familiar sight driving his dog, Sonny, around town in his pickup truck.

Survivors include his wife Linda of Stromsburg; two daughters, Rhonda (James) Schafer of Grapevine, Texas, and Erin (Jay) Holtzen of Stromsburg; one son, Jason of Stromsburg; five grandchildren, Justus, Gavin and Aurora Schafer of Grapevine, Texas, Christian and Kenna Holtzen of Stromsburg, and Miranda Rosenkranz of Stromsburg; mother, DeLoris Rosenkranz of Washington, Kan.; sister, Janice (George) Cecrle of Hollenburg, Kan.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Bill.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg at 2 p.m. with Pastor Keith Brozek officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be in the Stromsburg cemetery. Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Melles "Denny" Walling III

Waco resident, 56

Melles "Denny" Walling III, 56, of Waco died Friday, June 6, 2003, at Normal, Ill.
He was born Nov. 18, 1946, in New Jersey to Melles and Audrey (Broadwater) Walling. He was employed by Schaffer Trucking in York.

He was a Vietnam veteran and a member of the Eagles Lodge #3990 in York. On Feb. 12, 1999, he was married to Suzanne Stahr at Belleville, Kan.

He is survived by his wife, Suzanne of Waco; one daughter, Toni Walling of Vill Platte, La.; a stepson, Brandon Lee Fenster of Omaha; two stepdaughters, Tamara Fenster of Waco and Jalisa Harlow of York; two grandchildren, Amy Walling and Jessica Walling of Vill Platte, La.; his parents, Melles and Audrey Walling of Cambridge, Va.; a sister-in-law, Beth Walling of Jussup, Ga.; his father- and mother-in-law, Rupert and Joanne Stahr of Kearney; brothers-in-law, Douglas (Barb) Stahr of Kearney, Michael (Karen) Stahr of Marble Falls, Texas, James (Christi) Stahr of Burnt, Texas, and Lee Stahr of York; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Walling.

Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, at the Metz Chapel. Private family interment will take place at a later time. There will be no visitation due to cremation. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
