Diane J. Young

York resident, 49

Diane J. Young, 49, of York died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in York.
She was born Nov. 27, 1953, in Henderson to Richard and Ardith (Peters) Regier. She was a 1972 graduate of Hampton High School and married Jerry L. Young on Aug. 27, 1977, in York. Diane was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry of York; daughter, Marissa Young of Lincoln; son, Travis Young of York; her parents, Richard and Ardith Regier of Henderson; sisters, LaVonne (Terry) Smith of Hampton and Sandra (Jess) Huebert of Aurora; brother, Randy (JoAnnette) Regier of Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in York. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Thursday, at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Johnson

York resident, 90

Grace L. Johnson, 90, of York died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Fairmont.

She was born May 14, 1912, in Glenwood, Iowa, to Alvinzie and Minnie (Benscoter) Bailey. Grace graduated from high school at Haxtun, Colo. and attended Kearney State Teachers College.

On Oct. 28, 1933, she married Victor L. Johnson at Grand Island, and they moved to York in the late 1930s.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of York. She was appointed York County Treasurer in April of 1952 and held that position until January of 1962; she then worked for the York State Agency and Hylton-Finn Insurance, retiring in 1979. Grace had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Epworth Village Volunteers.

Survivors include her two sons, Robert and his wife, Cheryl, Johnson of Midland, Mich., and David and his wife Loretta Johnson of York; six grandchildren, Steven and Anne Johnson of Los Altos, Calif., Alan and Allison Johnson of Wichita, Kan., Sue and David Mikan of Glenshaw, Penn., Kevin and Teresa Johnson of Essexville, Mich., Karin Gustin of Midland, Mich., and Mark and Rebecca Johnson of Crete. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Darlene Grove of Northglenn, Colo.; and special friend, Jean Ann Johnson of Midland, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of York with the Rev. Ralph Ford. Burial will be at the Greenwood cemetery of York. Visitation will be held Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., at Metz Mortuary, and Thursday at the church until services.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Epworth Village at York or Fairview Manor at Fairmont.

Wilma I. Pederson

Hastings resident, 92

Wilma I. Pederson, 92, of Hastings died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 4, 1910, in Gayville, S.D., to James C. and Grace (Benthin) Clark. She graduated from Vermillion High School in Vermillion, S.D. In August 1939, she married Delmar 'Pete" Pederson in Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in several communities before moving to Hastings in 1945. They established Cash-Way Candy Company in 1945 and later expanded the business to Grand Island. They also opened York Wholesale in York. She served as the corporate secretary/treasurer until the death of her husband in 1997. She was a past member of the Nebraska Heart Association.

Wilma I. Pederson was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pete; one daughter, Sally Wanek; two grandchildren, Michael Baker and Rebecca Pederson; and a sister, Twila Harrington.

Survivors include her son, Jim (Pat) Pederson of Hastings; daughters, Barbara (Delmar) McCord of Hastings, Beverly Baker of Holdrege; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at 11 a.m., at Butler-Volland Chapel with the Rev. John L. Ross officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings. Visitation will be Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to service time. Memorials may be sent to the Nebraska Heart Association or Home Away from Home, care of Mary Lanning Health Care Foundation. Condolences may be sent @www.lbvfh.com.

Lavonne B. Geery

York resident, 77

Lavonne B. Geery, 77, of York, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at York.
She was born May 12, 1925 at Williamson, Iowa, to Worth W. and Blanche (Staley) Wilson. She graduated from Harvey High School in Iowa and on May 17, 1941 she was married to Donald L. Geery at her home in Harvey.

During the war, she operated a metal turning lathe at the Norden Bomb Sight Company while her husband was attending Air Force Tec School at Indianapolis, Ind. They came to Fairmont in 1943 when Don was stationed at the Fairmont Air Base. Lavonne became acquainted with many York citizens through her work with the USO Center at the York Auditorium. After the war they made their home in York.

Lavonne was a longtime member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York and was instrumental in getting the Association for Retarded Children started in York and surrounding area. She continued to work within the association that later became the Association for Retarded Citizens much of her life. She also worked with the Red Cross Bloodmobile and the United Way.

She is survived by her husband, Donald of York; two sons, Michael Geery of Columbus and Mark Geery of Minnesota; three grandchildren; sister, Margery Nail of Park Rapids, Minn.; and brother, Robert Wilson of Columbus.

Preceding her in death were her parents, infant son Donald Geery Jr. and son Timothy Geery.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, at 2 p.m. at the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9-9 and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon at Metz and until services at the church.

Wayne O. Kanter

York resident, 55

Wayne O. Kanter, 55, of York died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at York General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 2, 1947, in Grand Island to Clarence Arthur and Katherine Augusta (Butt) Kanter. He was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Central City and confirmed in 1961 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. He grew up on a farm west of Palmer. He attended Palmer schools graduating from Palmer High School in 1966. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1971 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.

On June 6, 1970, he married Carol Marostica at Cheyenne, Wyo. They lived in Wyoming and Colorado before moving to Nebraska where they lived in the Palmer area until they moved to York in 1992. He was the construction foreman when the York Pioneer plant was built. He was in his 20th year at Pioneer Hibred Int.

He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in York serving currently on the Board of Stewardship and as an usher. He was a member of the Burton-Beyer Post 120 of Palmer.

He loved farming, raising cattle and anything to do with agriculture. He was a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and race cars.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of York; two sons, Michael (Janice) Kanter of Lawrence, Kan., Wayne (Ruddene) Kanter of Grand Island; two grandchildren, Reagan Kanter and Anthony Kanter; a very special niece, Shalynn Kanter; his father, Clarence Kanter of Palmer; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Linda Kanter of Palmer; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Michelle Marie and Angela Sue, and his mother, Katherine.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Faith Lutheran Church, 1214 Ohio Ave., in York. Pastor Arthur Schauer will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Rose Hill cemetery in Palmer with military rites by Burton Beyer Post #120 of Palmer. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the church. Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.

Jim Sundberg

Polk resident, 73
James Kent "Jim" Sundberg, 73, of Polk, died at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, after battling cancer for the last six months.

Jim was born on Sept. 30, 1929 in York to Oscar and Violet (Zuver) Sundberg. While growing up, Jim helped at the family hardware store, Sundberg and Son. He graduated from Polk High School in 1947; and then attended Nebraska Weslyan University for two years, and later completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.

In 1951, Jim entered the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. On Aug. 29, 1952, James K. Sundberg and Luette Kraft were united in marriage in Merrill, Wis. In 1971, he retired from the military as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the military, Jim worked as director of personnel for the Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers until the mid-1980s. In 1986, he returned to his hometown of Polk to work with his sister at Sundberg and Son.

Jim grew up in the United Methodist Church in Polk, he and Luette were charter members of the First Congregational Church of Alaska, and had attended the United Church of Christ at Arborville after returning to Polk. He was a member of the Wilcox Post No. 160 of the American Legion in Polk, the Air Force Sergeants Association, and a life member of the Air Force Association.

He is survived by his wife of Polk; one son, Kent R. of Polk; two daughters, Jamie and Glen Black of Grapevine, Texas and Jill and Casey Warren of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; two sisters, Janice Saylor of Polk and Donna and Gene Bauer of Sutton; and two grandchildren, Emilie and Tristan Warren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, Jon Saylor; and one brother-in-law, Ed Saylor.

Memorial services will be Friday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Polk with Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. There will be no visitation. Solt Funeral Home in Polk is in charge of the arrangements.

Bret Ehlers

Bradshaw resident, 37
Bret T. Ehlers, 37, of Bradshaw died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, in York.

He was born Dec. 1, 1965, in Osceola to Bob and Dorothy (Myers) Ehlers. He was a 1984 graduate of Bradshaw High School and was engaged in farming in the York area. Bret was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict where he was confirmed and baptized. He was an avid sports fan, especially for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

He is survived by his son, Kyle of Aurora; mother, Dorothy Ehlers of York; brothers, Fred (Lori) Ehlers of York and Jeffrey (Ellen) Ehlers of Lakewood, Colo.; sisters, Jacqueline Embree of Daytona Beach, Fla., Rosanne Bittinger of Orange, Texas, and Gina (Todd) Schoch of York; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death was his father, Bob, in May of 2002, a niece and a nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Seventh and Nebraska Ave. in York. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill cemetery west of Benedict. Visitation began on Sunday at Metz.

Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Oscar Froid

York native, 83

Oscar Elon Froid, 83, of Kansas City, Mo., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at his home.
He was born Aug. 19, 1919, in York to Joseph Elon and Mary Elizabeth (Roberts) Froid.

While serving in the Army during WWII, he married his high school sweetheart, Leta Mae Kline, on Oct. 19, 1941. During his tour of duty he was with the first troops that liberated the Dachau concentration camp.

After returning home he attended the University of Lincoln, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. For many years he worked with Stearns-Rogers in Denver, Colo. While their employee, he worked on the development of the Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine. His employment also took him to California, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Kansas City, Mo. In his later years he perfected his skills in woodworking and designed children's furniture, rocking animals and a specialty line of whirly gigs. These last five years he experienced a decline in health.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1999, his parents and a sister.

Survivors include his daughters, Diane (Dale) Straight of Hampton, Deborah Froid of Kansas City, Mo., and Denise (James) Lincoln of West Port, Conn.; two sisters, Elaine Haner of Port Orchard, Wash., and Jo Jean Preuit of Gresham; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in Kansas City on Jan. 19. Graveside services will be at Greenwood cemetery at a date yet to be determined.

Carl H. Rieger

Utica resident, 96
Carl H. Rieger of Utica died Friday, Jan. 17, in Utica.

He was born Dec. 2, 1906, in Eustis. He married Vivian Gardiner on Dec. 30, 1930. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary last year.

Carl farmed south of Utica, was employed at Pollock Implement and was retired as a custodian for the Utica Public Schools.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian; sons, Robert (Valora) Rieger of Raytown, Mo., Donald (Maxine) Rieger of Gresham; daughters, Gladys (Roy) Wiemer of York, Janice (William) Wiemer of York; brother, Ernest Rieger of Seward; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Christ and Lauisa (Spahr) Rieger; granddaughter, Rebecca; and grandson, Mark.

Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Utica with the Rev. David Masten officiating. Burial will be in the Utica cemetery. Volzke Mortuary in Seward is in charge of arrangements.

Ila DeVoss

South Carolina resident, 78
Ila DeVoss of Easley, S.C., died Jan. 14, 2003. She was born on Sept. 5, 1924, in Bradshaw. She has one surviving sister, Grace Rowley. Ila's ashes will be brought to Bradshaw Plainfield cemetery.
