Ansel I. Lindquist

Stromsburg resident, 90
Ansel I. Lindquist, 90, of Stromsburg died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

He was born Oct. 4, 1912, in Polk County to Ivan and Martha L. (Swanson) Lindquist. He was baptized as an infant at Calvary Lutheran Church in Swede Home. He grew up on a farm west of Stromsburg. He attended Glendale country school and Stromsburg High School.

He was married to Opal Emily Wilson in 1935. They lived in the Polk community until 1946 and then moved east of Stromsburg, where they farmed until 1978 when they retired and moved into Stromsburg.

Ansel was a member of Green's Chapel and a current member of the Stromsburg United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, golf, working in the yard and tending his flower gardens. He was a 2002 recipient of the Ak-Sar-Ben Pioneer Farm Family Award for 100 years of continuous family ownership.

Survivors include one daughter, Alice (Bob) Hellbusch; one grandson, Darren (Vicki) Hellbusch, and one granddaughter, Lisa (Greg) Revucha; one great-granddaughter, Mallory Hellbusch; one great-grandson, Miles Revucha; two step-great-grandchildren Mike and Aliana, all of Grand Island; and special friend, Iliene Randell of Stromsburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife Opal; one brother, Floyd; two sisters, Doris Gustafson and Neva Wisely.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with Rev. Anderson Kwankin officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be in the Stromsburg cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Stromsburg United Methodist Church, the Polk County Foundation or the donor's choice.

Ila Christensen

York resident, 88
Ila Faye Christensen, 88, of York, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Lincoln.

She was born June 22, 1914, in Comstock, to F. G. and Minnie (Knight) Snyder. Ila was a graduate of Kearney High School and Kearney State Teachers College. She taught at schools in Fairdale, Brayton, Farwell, Elba and Erickson.

On Feb. 3, 1940, she was married to James M. Christensen at Grand Island. They farmed for a few years and came to York in December of 1957. Ila owned the Mode-O-Day dress shop in York until 1965. She was a member of the East Hill Church of Christ and active in the York College Helping Hands. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she was past president and currently was serving as chaplain and she also spent many volunteer hours at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Ila was very active in the Greater York Area Genealogical Society and the York County Historical Society. She was a past member of the York Mothersingers.

Survivors include her husband, James of York; sons, James G. and his wife, Jannette Christensen of Derby, Kan., and Larry Christensen of Irving, Texas; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also surviving are her brother, Frank Snyder of Oklahoma City, Okla., and her sister, Doris (Wendell) Coulter of Sun City West, Ariz., and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the East Hill Church of Christ with Bruce Goodwin officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Ruhl Ekeler

Exeter resident, 90
Marie D. Ruhl Ekeler of Exeter died Jan. 10, 2003, at the Exeter Care Center.

She was born to Aloysius P. Ruhl and Teresa M. Robbins Ruhl on Sept. 14, 1912, at Exeter. She was the fourth in the family of 11 children. She was baptized at St. Stephen's Church and was a lifelong member. Her education included Fillmore County District #78, St. Stephen Catholic School, and the Immaculate Conception Academy, Hastings, through the ninth grade.

On June 21, 1932, Marie was married to Henry M. Ekeler at St. Stephen Church, Exeter. They raised two daughters, Agnes Marie and Kathleen Ann. Marie and Henry lived and farmed north of Exeter. Marie worked at the Exeter City Cafe owned by her sister, Teresa. They retired to Exeter in July 1977.

Marie loved her family and enjoyed visiting with young and old alike. She was a member of the Happy Hour Extension Club, Exeter Woman's Club, St. Stephen Altar Society, Crete Deanery and LDCCW Boards, and was an avid card player. She was the correspondent for the Catholic Southern Nebraska Register for many years.

A Rosary was recited at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter, on Jan. 13, 2003. Funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Geneva at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 14, 2003. Father Kenneth Borowiak and Father Peter Gadient were co-celebrants with Rusty Ruhl, acolyte; Ryan Ruhl, lector; Peter and Mark Ruhl, servers; Karen Base, Pat Becker and Mary Vestecka, gift bearers. St. Stephen and St. Joseph Choirs accompanied by Michael Zeleny provided the music. Casket bearers were Ron Ruhl, Harvey Johnson, Darryl Ruhl, Gene Ruhl, Sonny Hanson, Rocky Ruhl and Carryl Ruhl. Interment was in the Exeter cemetery in Exeter.

Marie is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Agnes Anderson, Kathleen and Dean Due; grandsons, Douglas and Dennis Anderson, James and Robert Due, and sister, Teresa Johnson Erdkamp; four sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; granddaughter, Darcee; son-in-law, Jim Anderson; parents; three sisters, Stella, Agatha, Angela, and five brothers, Tim, Thaddeus, Bill, Kenneth and Ollie.

Farmers Funeral Home of Exeter was in charge of the arrangements.

Weselyn W. Klone

York resident, 86

Weselyn Wayne Klone, 86, of York, died Saturday, March 01, 2003 at York.
He was born May 1, 1916 to Walter and Elizabeth (Rogers) Klone in York, and grew up on a farm southeast of York. He was baptized and confirmed in the English Lutheran Church. Wes was a 1935 graduate of York High School. He worked for the Standard Oil Company out of high school until serving in the York Army National Guard. He was called to active duty during World War II. During his tour from 1940 to 1945, he served in the European Theater with the 134th Infantry and he was awarded the Purple Heart.

On Oct. 24, 1941, he married Marguerite Clithero at Grand Island. Upon separation from the service, Wes and Marguerite lived in Denver where they operated a restaurant until 1950. They then returned to Nebraska where they farmed west of York. Wes also raised livestock and worked part-time at the York Sale Barn. They retired to York from the farm in 1981. After retiring from farming he enjoyed camping, gardening, and doing beautiful woodworking projects for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, family and friends.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of York and had served as an Elder and Deacon. He was a past commander of the American Legion Bolton Post #19 where he had been a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps. He was also a member of the VFW and York Elks Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Marguerite of York; one son, Gary, and his wife, Amber, of Clinton, Iowa; one daughter, Vicki, and her husband Douglas Staehr of Stromsburg; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his brother-in-law, Al Hueske of Lincoln.

Preceding him in death was an infant son, his parents, three sisters, a nephew and a foster granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in York on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harry Brown. Military graveside services will be held at the Greenwood cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church. Visitation will begin Monday at 9 a.m.

Joan Hecht

North Dakota resident, 74

Joan "Jo" Hecht, 74, of Dickinson, N.D., died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson.
Joan Berggren was born Feb. 27, 1928, in Hamilton County, Neb., daughter of John and Beatrice (Fish) Berggren. She attended rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Aurora High School.

She taught at a rural school and later the seventh and eighth grades at Giltner. She attended Kearney State College and the University of Nebraska.

Joan married Harry Hecht, Sept. 1, 1951, at Monroe Evangelical Free Church where she was confirmed as a teenager.

The Hechts lived at Killeen, Texas, while Harry was stationed at Fort Hood. Joan worked at Killeen Transit Mix as a bookkeeper and dispatcher. In 1953 they returned to Nebraska and lived at Walthill briefly, then Pawnee City, where she worked in the Pawnee County Hospital. They moved to York in 1956, and in 1975 the family moved to Dickinson, N.D.

Joan was a 4-H Club leader for over 10 years, Sunday School teacher for many years, and a certified tutor for English as Second Language. She and her husband were foster parents in Stark County for 10 years. Joan belonged to Bread for the World, Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Wyoming Writers and Poets Assn., Dickinson Writers Exchange and the Dickinson United Methodist Church.

Family camping, trail riding, bird watching, Bible study, quilting, and writing were hobbies. Several articles, stories and photos were published, including the Medora Doll Book. She spoke to several southwest North Dakota schools as a visiting author and storyteller.

She is survived by her husband, Harry; son, Steven (Jodi) Hecht, grandson, Eric, Grandville, MI; daughter, Muriel Hecht, Denver, Colo.; foster son, Alan (Paula) Jones and children, Sheillby, Ashley, Winter and Trevor, Billings, Mont.; brother, Warren (Gretchen) Berggren, Golden, Colo.; sisters, Shirley (Jack) Stratton, Ohio, Colo., Barbara (Dick) Mohrbacher, Maple Glen, Penn., and Janet (Warren) Jones, Anchorage, Alaska; Harry's sister-in-law, Sharon Hecht, Hastings, Neb.; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by two infant daughters, Gretchen Kay and Sarah Sue, and her parents.

Jo's funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the United Methodist Church in Dickinson, with Rev. Scott McKirdy officiating. Interment will take place at the Aurora cemetery, Nebraska, on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at noon. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

The family prefers that memorials be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to the United Methodist Church in Dickinson.

Maynard Peterson

York resident, 59

Maynard J. Peterson, 59, of York, died Saturday, March 1, 2003 at York.
He was born April 15, 1943 in Stromsburg, to Martin and Bernice (Conrad) Peterson. He was a 1962 graduate of York High School. On April 20, 1964 he was married to Linda Adams at Concordia, Kan. Maynard worked for over 39 years at Champion Home Builders in York and was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of York. He had been a member of the Nebraska National Guard. Maynard enjoyed his family and having coffee with friends and was an avid horse lover.

He is survived by his wife Linda of York; two sons, Craig and his wife, Amanda Peterson, and Colby and his fianc� Nicole Faris, all of York; his daughter Susan and her husband Eugene Wiese of Beaver Crossing; eight grandchildren; Kiley, Abby, Connor and Noah Wiese; Taylor, Hayley and Morgan Peterson and Jordan Peterson. Also surviving are his two brothers, Melvin and his wife Barb Peterson and Merle and his wife Becky Peterson all of York; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Marland and Myron.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with LeRoy Hoyer officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation will begin Monday at 5 p.m. at Metz.

Wendell Friesen

Henderson resident, 88

Wendell Jacob Friesen was born in York County to Gerhard J. and Katherina Friesen on July 1, 1914. He died on Feb. 28, 2003 at the age of 88 years at Henderson. He graduated from Henderson High School in 1933. He was a member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church.
Wendell and Hannah Friesen were married at Bethesda on Feb. 27, 1938. They lived and farmed near Henderson.

Wendell is survived by his two sons; Elgie and his wife Karen of Aurora, Romaine and his wife Judy of Laguna Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Wyona and her husband Edward Friesen of Aurora, and Kathy and her husband Chuck Schmidt of McPherson, Kan.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Amy Friesen and one brother Allen (Martha) Friesen, both of Henderson. Also one sister-in-law Betty Friesen of BellaVista, Ark., and brother-in-law Leslie Friesen of Henderson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hannah; parents; three brothers, Norman, Irwin and Dennis; and two sisters, Lillie and Mildred.

Funeral services will be held today, Monday at 2 p.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson with burial in the Friesen cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Henderson Care Center.

Patricia A. Nickels

York resident, 65

Patricia A. Nickels, 65, of York died Monday, March 3, 2003, at Lincoln.
She was born in rural York on July 18, 1937, to Elmer and Eva (Kolhoff) Piper. She was a 1955 graduate of Benedict High School. On June 12, 1955, she married Dean Nickels in Benedict. Pat was a wife, mother and a member of the First United Methodist Church in York as well as York Country Club. She also volunteered at York General Hospital and the Developmental Learning Center.

She is survived by her husband Dean of York; two daughters, Debra (Stephen) Easley of Pawhuska, Okla., and Mitze (Mike) Rethwisch of Randolph; sons, Mike (Susan) Nickels of Deerfield, N.H., and Randy (Anita) Nickels of Durango, Colo.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva (Harold) Ostrander of York, Frances (Jim) Stansbury of Smith Center, Kan.; brothers, Bill (Shirley) LeSuer of Hordville, and Hank (Marilyn) Piper of Wamego, Kan.

Preceding her in death were her parents; son, Robert Dean; grandsons, Brandon Nickels and Baby Dean.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 7, at the First United Methodist Church in York. Burial will be in York's Greenwood cemetery. Memorials in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

LeRoy A. Zegers

Seward resident, 65

LeRoy A. Zegers of Seward died March 4, 2003.
He was born on April 13, 1937. He was a member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward. He was a 30-year Star Route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and a former employee of Sunflower and New Holland in York.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann (Vanis) Zegers; parents, Arthur and Helen (Sedlak) Zegers.

He is survived by daughters, Cathy (Robert) Hrnicek of Seward, Theresa (John) Conrad of Seward; son, Norman Zegers of Seward; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Brandon and Amanda Hrnicek and Samantha Zegers.

Visitation was scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 6, and 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 7, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service Saturday. A rosary prayer service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church in Seward with the Rev. Father Brad Zitek officiating. Burial will be in the Seward cemetery in Seward. Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice in care of the family.

Patricia A. Molacek

Omaha resident, 46

Patricia A. Molacek, 46, of Omaha died March 4, 2003.
She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church and coached girls volleyball at St. Joan of Arc.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Jr. of Omaha; daughter, Christin; mother, Marilyn Dostal of Clarkson; grandfather, Edward Korecky of Clarkson; brothers, Keith Dostal, Mike Dostal, both of Howells, Mark Dostal of Columbus, Dan Dostal of Schuyler; sisters, Susan Indra of Clarkson, Laurie Goodrich of Schuyler, and Lynn Vodvarka of York; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Joe Molacek of Howells.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary, all at Brewer-Korisko Mortuary, 5105 F Street, Omaha. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church at 7430 Hascall in Omaha. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery in Omaha. Memorials may be sent to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or Christin Molacek Educational Trust.

C. Raymond Gestrine, 93, of Stromsburg died Saturday, March 15, 2003, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Services are pending. Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.
