Eric Galvan

Central City resident, 21

Eric James Galvan, 21, of Central City died on Saturday, June 14, 2003, near Chapman, as a result of an automobile accident.
Eric was born on June 15, 1981 in Lancaster, Calif., to James and Brooksie A. (Rogers) Galvan. He grew up and attended school in California until 1999, when they moved to Central City. He graduated from Central City High School in 1999. Eric was employed at Champion Homes in York.

Eric was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lancaster, Calif. He enjoyed music and collecting baseball cards.

Those surviving Eric are his mother, Brooksie Bauman of Central City; one sister, Jeanette and Troy Crawford and daughters Silvina Santana and Melissa Ortiz, all of Central City; five brothers, Larry Fenster of Gibbon, Troy Fenster of Central City, Chad Fenster and Danny Fenster, both of Lincoln, David Galvan of Central City, and Jimmy Galvan of Colorado; and special friend Chelsea Fowler of Hordville.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Services will be Tuesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating. Burial will be in the Central City cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, at the funeral home.

Merlin Stanley Pohl

Alabama resident, 84

The Rev. Dr. M. S. Pohl of Tuscaloosa, Ala., died June 7, 2003. He was born near Bradshaw on Oct. 25, 1918, to Carl and Sabina Pohl.
He graduated from Zion Lutheran Elementary School and Hampton High School. After graduation from Concordia University in Seward in 1941, he attended various universities, receiving a master's degree in education from the University of Nebraska. In 1963 he graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill., via colloquy and was awarded the Doctor of Letters degree in 1975.

Dr. Pohl's ministry included service as a principal in several Lutheran elementary and high schools; visiting professor and guest lecturer at Concordia of Seward and Concordia Seminary of St. Louis; senior pastor at First Lutheran Church of Glencoe, Minn.

From 1974 to 1982 he was president of Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Mich. He was chairman of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod's Board for Higher Education.

After retiring in 1982, Dr. Pohl moved to Alabama. He served on the staff at Concordia College, interim pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church of Selma, mission developer at Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church of Lillian, pastor of First Lutheran of Floala; and founder of New Hope Lutheran of Andalusia. He then served a year as assistant pastor at Bethel Lutheran of Point Clear before assuming his current pastorate at Christ Lutheran Church in Tuscaloosa in November of 2002.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, sister, and grandson. Survivors include wife Doris of Tuscaloosa; son, Gary (Jane Anne) Pohl of Round Rock, Texas; daughter, Gwen (Peter) Infante, and grandchildren, Alex and Maria, of Falls Church, Va.

Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church in Tuscaloosa on June 10. Graveside service was at Zion Lutheran Church in Tobias, Neb., on June 12.

Inez Veteto

York resident, 77
Inez Agusta Hayes Veteto, age 77 years, of York, the widow of Bernard V. "Cap" Veteto, passed away at The Hearthstone Care Center on Monday evening, June 16, 2003.

Inez was born on Feb. 22, 1926 at Little Sioux, Iowa to Benjamin Floyd and Hilda Hattie Teresa (Germer) Hayes. She worshipped with Christians at the East Hill Church of Christ in York.

Inez attended Harding College in Searcy, Ark., where she was united in marriage to Bernard V. Veteto on Aug. 8, 1947. The couple lived in Omaha, Nebraska, where Inez worked with the Child Saving Institute. In 1960 the family moved to York where Inez was Cafeteria Manager for York College. In later years, she worked as kitchen supervisor at the Nebraska Center for Women in York until her retirement. Inez was an accomplished gardener and cook, and had a great fondness for animals and flowers. She served the Church of Christ for many years teaching ladies' bible classes and cooking at the Nebraska Youth Camp for nearly 30 years.

Survivors include three daughters: Anita (and her husband, Max) Clark of Searcy, Ark., Carmen (and her husband, David) Aufrecht of Kearney, and Kristine (and her husband, Tom) Haddox of Van Alstyne, Texas; five grandchildren: Natalie Clark Hagan of Louisville, Ken., Melisa Clark of Lyon, France, Harold Clark (and his wife, Jana) of Conway, Ark., Ashley Haddox Veatch (and her husband, Jed) of Searcy, Ark., and Jessica Haddox of Van Alstyne, Texas; one sister, Ida Elnora Hayes of Utica.

Inez was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard V. "Cap" Veteto on Feb. 23, 2003; one son, Vincent Francis Veteto in 1971; and one brother, Benjamin Floyd Hayes II.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m., on Friday, June 20, 2003 at the East Hill Church of Christ in York. Visitation will begin after 4 p.m., on Wednesday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Interment will be at Greenwood cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to The Hearthstone Care Center or Hospice Care of Nebraska. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Joan R. Trauernicht

York resident, 82

Joan R. Trauernicht, age 82 years, of York, widow of Herman Trauernicht, died at The Hearthstone Care Center in York on Friday evening, June 13, 2003.

She was born on May 31, 1921, at Elwood, Neb., to John Rae and Elva (Groshart) Nelson. She lived on a farm two and one-half miles south of Elwood with her parents. She was baptized in the Elwood Christian Church at the age of 13 years by Rev. Tibbs. She attended rural school through the eighth grade. Joan attended high school in Elwood taking Normal training which certified her to teach for three years, during which time she taught at rural schools.

Joan was united in marriage to Herman Trauernicht on May 31, 1941, at Gering. The couple lived on a farm south of Eustis until Herman was called into military service. Joan was a 4-H leader during the years on the farm. Two children were born to this union, O'Della Jo and Alan Kent. Joan and children were with Herman for his basic training in Texas and when he was a Military Policeman in Washington, D.C.

After Herman's discharge from the military they lived in Elwood and Bertrand, Neb. They moved to Lincoln in 1962 when Herman was called to the ministry. Joan went to college, too, and was certified to be a teacher once again. She taught in Bennett and then at St. Joseph's Catholic School in York. Joan retired from teaching in 1984 and went with Herman on the nine interims he served for the Christian Church. Joan always gave a sermonette for the children for each worship service. She taught Sunday School in each church and also taught Vacation Bible School each year. Her hobbies were sewing, quilt-making, gardening, canning and freezing the garden produce, music, and traveling.

Survivors include one daughter, O'Della Jo (and her husband, Jeff) Taylor of Greensboro, N.C.; one son, Alan Kent (and his wife, Irene) Trauernicht of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren, Tonya Ann (and her husband, Brien) Brandenburg of Greensboro, N.C., Tricia Lee Ann (and her husband, Pete) Bouras of Greensboro, N.C., Tia Mara (and her husband, Todd) Newcomer of Portland, Ore., and Alex Edgars Trauernicht of Lincoln; three great-granddaughters, Taylor Ann Bouras, Riley Elizabeth Bouras, and Annalyse Marie Brandenburg; one sister, Gwen Deselms of Elwood; two sisters-in-law: Pansy Hall of Mitchell, Neb., and Helen Trauernicht of Nampa, Idaho. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herman on Aug. 21, 2002, and a brother-in-law (Jim Deselms).

It was Joan's wishes that following her death her body be cremated. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2003, at the First Christian Church in York with Pastor Ron Johnson officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or Hospice of Tabitha Healthcare Services. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel E. Gillan

York resident, 86
Ethel E. Gillan, 86, of York, died Monday, June 16, 2003 at her home. She was born July 5, 1916 near Cordova to John and Clara (Lutz) Grandorff. She graduated from Cordova High School in 1934 and from Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She married Kenneth Gillan on March 1, 1941 and together they raised five daughters as they farmed west of Cordova. Although caring for others was her life work, she also enjoyed expressing her creativity in sewing, writing, gardening and cooking. Ethel was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Cordova.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda Gillan of Denver, CO, Trudy (Jeffrey) Nisley of Shawnee Mission, KS, Andrea (David) Wiebers of Rochester, MN, Kristine (Daniel) Guthrie of Exeter; five grandchildren, Blair and Blake Nisley, Ben, Laura and Claire Guthrie.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Kathleen; two sisters, Lelah Jurgensen and Opal Torrey.

Private family committal services will be held Thursday followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. the St. John's Lutheran Church in Cordova. The family suggests memorials to Tabitha Health Care Services. Visitation for the public will be held 1-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Sigmund Bohnet

Illinois resident, 63

Sigmund "Sig" Bohnet, Collinsville, Ill., died on June 14, 2003. He was born Oct. 19, 1939, to Friedrich and Emma (Hehr) Bohnet in Wittenberg, Romania. He was baptized, confirmed and raised in the Lutheran faith. His parents, farmers, were forced to move their family frequently as refugees of World War II, finally settling in Canada when Sig was 10 years old.

Sig moved to the U.S. for college at Concordia Seward in Nebraska in 1959. He later received his Master of Science in Education at City University of New York, became a naturalized citizen (1969) and obtained his Specialists Degree from the University of Minnesota. He and Kathleen met in 1959 while both were attending Concordia Seward. They married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York on Aug. 18, 1962, and enjoyed 40 wonderful years of marriage.

He served as a Lutheran teacher and principal for both elementary and high school for 40 years, in New York, Minnesota and Texas, before retiring after 14 years of service to Metro-East Lutheran High School in Edwardsville, Ill., in June 2001.

In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing and activities with family and friends. In retirement, he became more involved at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Collinsville and worked on education related projects in both Illinois and Missouri.

He is preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, an infant brother, and sister-in-law Joyce Dahlgren. Survivors include his wife Kathleen; two sons, Eric (Rachel) Bohnet of Terre Haute, Ind., and Tyler (Jocelyn) Bohnet of Canby, Ore., three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Daniel and Samuel of Terre Haute; brothers, Adolph (Fran) and Friedrich; sisters, Hulda (Ed) Heikel, Alene (David) Crabbe and Renate Bohnet; in-laws, Don Dahlgren, Fred and Lori Ehlers, Keith and Sally Cotner; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Evalyn Foster

Lincoln resident, 84

Evalyn C. Foster, 84, of Lincoln, formerly of Geneva, died Monday, June 23, 2003, in Lincoln. She was the widow of Willard H. Foster. She was born to Homer and Mary (Dick) Goodrich on June 6, 1919, at Fairmont.

She was a member of the UCC Church, member and past president of Chapter O PEO, former member of the Nebraska Educational Association, past member of the Alumni Council of Doane College, long time organist and instructor in music, former teacher at the Geneva Youth Development Center.

Survivors include her son, Stanley (Sharon) Foster of Lincoln; daughters, Willa (Richard) Jones of Lincoln, Barbara J. (William Dennis) Hulen of Altoona, Iowa; brothers, Robert D. (Berdeen) Goodrich of Pecatonica, Ill., Donald E. Goodrich of Hastings; sisters-in-law: Ruth Goodrich of York, Doris Seidell of Lincoln, Louise Foster of Bellevue; grandchildren, Kimberly Nicole Hulen and Chad William Hulen of Altoona, Iowa; Sean Phillip Foster Jones of Lincoln.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva. Visitation will start at 11 a.m. Thursday with the family greeting friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be sent to the Geneva UCC Church, Clark Jerry Retirement Home in Lincoln, Geneva Arts Council or Doane College. Graveside services will be held in Exeter cemetery. Officiating is the Rev. Lynn Strandt.

Darryl Shald

Neligh resident, 38

Darryl Shald of Neligh, Neb., died July 2, 2003, in Omaha.

He was born on April 3, 1965, in Atkinson, son of Ivo Leon and Sandra (Davis) Shald.

He married Susanne Bristol on June 27, 1998. He was an owner/operator of a grain trucking company.

He is survived by his wife, Susanne Shald of Neligh; children, Natalie, Caleb, and Baby Shald, all of Neligh; his mother, Sandra Shald of Omaha; sisters, Sherry Miller of Sidney, Jenise Brown of Fremont, Stephanie Weir of Kearney, Vanessa Drueke of Eagle, Julie Delp of Columbus; father and mother-in-law, Elvin and Cheryl Bristol of Neligh; brother-in-law, Troy Bristol of Norfolk.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ivo Shald; and one sister, Camilla Shald.

Services will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Stuart with Father Doug Scheinost officiating. Bural will be in St. Boniface Catholic cemetery in Stuart. Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 4, 2003, at Seger Funeral Home with a wake service at 7 p.m.

Theresa Dush

Columbus resident, 79

Theresa "Terry" Dush, 79, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Beverly Health Care in Columbus.

She was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Tarnov, Neb., to Florian and Blabina (Zoucha) Placzek. She received her education in Tarnov. She was married to John Dush on Oct. 24, 1944, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus They lived in Columbus until 1951 when they moved to the farm south of Silver Creek. They farmed until 1984 when they retired and moved back to Columbus. Terry also worked for several years as a waitress at King's Korner in Columbus. She was a member of St. Anthony Church, St. Theresa Sodality, and was a past member of St. Lawrence Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband John of Columbus; daughters, Sally Carman of Central City, Judy (Robert) Morrow of Norfolk, Bonnie (Hubert) Maring of York; sisters, Minnie White of Columbus, Vi (Ralph) Kanitz of California; brothers, Ambrose (JoAnn) Placzek of Columbus, Florian "Jr." (Kathy) Placzek of Omaha, Jimmy (Vi) Placzek of Omaha; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Florian and Balbina Placzek; sons, John F. Dush III and Bill Dush; sister, Mary Ann Zelasney; brothers, Joe, Leo and T. J. Placzek; an infant brother and sister.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Del Lape officiating. She will be buried in St. Bonaventure cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at McKown Funeral home in Columbus with a vigil at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the same place.

Vivien Emken

York resident, 91

Vivien Jeannette Emken, 91, of York, died Thursday, July 3, 2002, at York. She was born Sept. 10, 1911, in Hamilton County to Harry Leland and Mary Jeannette (McMurrin) Bryant. She was a housewife and a member of the Arborville Congregational United Church of Christ near Polk.

At 16 months of age she moved with her parents and brother to Indianapolis, IN, where they lived until April of 1920 when together with her mother and brother she moved to Polk where she graduated from Polk High School in 1929.

On June 19, 1929, she was married to Arthur Emken who was a farmer and cattle and hog feeder near Benedict. The following spring they moved to a farm in Polk County until 1943 when they returned to the farm in York County.

Vivien is survived by her five children; Doris (Bob) Heineke, Duane (Patsy) Emken, Leila Kailey, Leland (Rose) Emken and Harry (Donna) Emken. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, brother and sister, stepfather, two stepmothers, three granddaughters, two grandsons and a great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 2 p.m. at the Arborville Church near Polk with burial in the Arborville cemetery. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Verne Wolstenholm

Bradshaw resident, 79

Verne Robert Wolstenholm, 79, of rural Bradshaw died Friday, July 4, 2003, in his home. He was born Dec. 16, 1923, on the family farm in York County to Jesse James and Bertha L. (Bellows) Wolstenholm.
He graduated from McCool Junction High School. He married Ruth Faye Church on Oct. 21, 1945, in Lexington. He served in the United States Air Force during WW II. After serving ten years as farm manager and house parent at Mothers' Jewels Home (now Epworth Village), he farmed north of Bradshaw for more than 30 years. Verne was a member of the Arborville Congregational Church.

Survivors include his wife Ruth Faye of rural Bradshaw; two daughters, Nancy (Bill) White of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jean (Arlen) Ankle of Abernathy, Texas; son Ross (Patty) Wolstenholm of York; sister-in-law Frances Wolstenholm of Huntsville, Ala.; grandchildren, Jenny (Tommy) Dunn of Colorado Springs, David Ankle of Amarillo, Texas, Chris Ankle of Abernathy, Texas, Cassie Wolstenholm of Kearney, Amber, Rachel, and Whitney Wolstenholm of York.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lester and Lloyd; sister-in-law, Belle Wolstenholm; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be in the Greenwoodcemetery in York. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
