Erwin D. Dye, 75

(July 21) ALLIANCE - Erwin Dale Dye, 75, died Saturday, July 19, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1927, to Jack and Martha (Spethman) Dye at the home in rural Box Butte County.

He graduated from Alliance High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Air Force on Oct. 3, 1951. His tour of duty included time in Greenland, Tucson, Ariz., and Cheyenne, Wyo., until his honorable discharge July 8, 1955. He married Wanda Seidler March 18, 1956 at Alliance. Erwin farmed and raised a dairy herd with his family until 1982 when he began farming with his sons. After selling his dairy herd in 1961 he emphasized on and built his herd of Angus cows in which he took extreme pride. Erwin also served the community through the years through his participation on the Alliance Co-operative board for 11 years, N.R.D. board for 10 years as well as serving on the school board. He was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on the church board. He is survived by his devoted wife Wanda; children, Chester Dye of Hemingford, Denise Dye of Hemingford, Bart and Kathy Dye of Alliance, Jack and Penny Dye of Hermosa, S.D.; and grandchildren, Karina Dye and fiancŽ Marty Jones, Trista Dye, Brianna Dye, Alyssa Dye and Chase Dye. He also is survived by his brothers Frank and wife Wiletta Dye and Jim and Judy Dye of Alliance; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Cecil and sister Betty Leistritz.

Mr. Dye's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, with Revs. Martin T. Schnare and Richard C. Mueller officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Prairie Haven Hospice or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Winterer, 80

(July 21) VANCOUVER, Wash. - Susan Winterer, 80, died Sunday, June 29, 2003. She was born Aug. 29, 1924, at Alliance, to Mabel and Carl Rockey.

For the past 47 years she lived at the family home at Seahurst, Wash. As a constant traveling companion of her husband Frank, she enjoyed trips throughout the west, especially to Hawaii where they spent many pleasant tropical vacations. Truly, Susan's greatest pleasure was spending time with her family. Her love of reading, sports, traveling and family activities was a model for all her children and grandchildren to follow. She will be remembered as a devoted and loving mother whose interest in continuous learning, caring, nurturing, honesty, strength of character and high ethical standards was an example to all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Thanne Summerson and husband Gary; son Frank Winterer Jr., and wife Shelley; five grandsons, Jeffrey, Michael and Matthew Summerson, and Cameron and Devon Winterer; and great-grandchildren Grant and Ellie Summerson. Her parents and her husband of 58 years, Frank Winterer Sr., preceded her in death.

At her request, there will be a private family memorial service at Tahoma National Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Highline Home Care Hospice.

Idona Dinkel, 89

(July 21) SIDNEY - Edith Idona Dinkel, 89, died July 17, 2003, at Memorial Health Care center. She was born Sept. 25, 1913, at her ranch home south of Hay Springs, the only child of Clarence E. and Agnes M. (Johnson) Benschoter.

She attended grade school at District 73, and graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1932. In 1935, she was married to Vernon Dinkel. They were engaged in farming southwest of Hay Springs. In the early 1970's, Idona became part owner of a restaurant near Loveland, Colo., where she worked for several years before making her home at Sidney. Idona enjoyed reading, crocheting, playing cards, watching sports and being around people. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always the delight of her life. She is survived by her only child, William "Bill" and Bea Dinkel of Sidney; grandchildren, DewAnn Smith of Sidney, Karen Jerde of Chesterton, Ind., and Craig Dinkel of Alliance; and nine great-grandchildren, Kristin, Lindsey and Jeff Armstrong, Jonathon, Justin, Kaylee and Dylan Dinkel and Michael and Sara Jerde.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, at the Hay Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, July 21, at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home at Sidney. A Memorial has been established to the Memorial Health Center Hospice, Sidney, NE 69162. Gehrig and Son Funeral Home of Sidney is in charge of arrangements.

Iola Hamilton, 91

(July 22) NEWMAN GROVE - Lela Iola Hamilton died Sunday, July 21, 2002, at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home in Newman Grove, Neb. She was born April 3, 1911, on her family's Cherry County farm north of Mullen, Nebraska to Fay B. and Sallie D. (Holland) James.

She graduated from Mullen High School in 1929. She received Normal Training which allowed her to teach in rural schools near Mullen including District #25 southeast of Alliance. On Dec. 29, 1936, Iola was married to Estel Ben Hamilton at Lincoln, Kan. They continued to live in the Mullen area until 1952 when they moved to Hay Springs for a brief time before moving to Alliance. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree, Iola taught for many years at Central and Emerson Elementary Schools. Iola was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and church circle, a member of the American Association of University Women, Alliance Education Association, Nebraska State Education Association, and the National Education Association. She also belonged to the Alliance Golden Age Club and an active volunteer in the Retired Senior Volunteer program. In 1997, Iola and Estel moved to Newman Grove, where they resided at Mid-Nebraska Lutheran Home. She is survived by her husband Estel of Newman Grove; three daughters: Karen DeWitt of Carrollton, Texas; Sharon Stephens and husband Dick of Albion, Vicki Fromholz and husband Russ of Arkansas City, Kan.; 6 grandchildren: Randy Stephens and wife Annette of Birdsbora, Pa., Kyle DeWitt and wife Renea of Bryan, Texas, Jodie Hall and husband Kevin of Dallas, Texas, Amy Stephens of Lincoln, Neb., Sarah Bird and husband Andy of Omaha, NE; Jennifer Stephens of Albion; great-grandchildren: Ben, Chris and Austin Stephens of Birdsboro, Pa., Granger, Coulter and Kendall DeWitt of Bryan, TX, one sister Betty Levine and husband Erik of North Platte, Neb., brothers, Gene James of Mullen, Neb., and Wes James of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Clara Stoner, Vera James and Florence Pew, two brothers Harold and Neal James, and one grandson Raab Fromholz.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance, with the Reverend Stephen T. Roosa officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 23, at the funeral home from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

Linda VanDerslice, 43

(July 22) LINCOLN - Linda VanDerslice, 43, died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at Lincoln. She was born Oct. 16, 1958, at Fremont. Her parents were Karl and Margaret VanDerslice.

She was employed by Community Alternatives at Molex. She was a member of Christ's Place Church. She is survived by her mother, Margaret VanDerslice of Seward. She also is survived by seven bothers, Robert VanDerslice, Andy VanDerslice and Dennis VanDerslice, all of Lincoln, Paul VanDerslice of Seward, Kenny VanDerslice of Bee, Karl VanDerslice of Geneva and Rich VanDerslice of Dwight; and three sisters, Barb Dominquez of Lincoln, Marilyn Hill of Phoenix, Ariz., and Karen Washington of San Francisco.

Ms. VanDerslice's funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, July 22, at Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial will be in Cheney Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Community Alternatives, 4851 South 16th St., Lincoln, NE 68512.

E. Glenn Nelson, 76

(July 22) ALLIANCE - E. Glenn Nelson passed away July 20, 2003, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. He was born Sep. 7, 1926, to Inga and Elmer Nelson at Willmar, Minn.

In 1935, the family moved to Park Rapids, Minn., to a small farm and later to town. In 1938, his parents died from burns as a result of a propane gas explosion. Glenn then lived with an aunt and uncle, Ebba and William Knutson at Benson, Minn. In 1939, he moved to Park Rapids and lived with an older sister and her husband, Elaine and Bud Wetherbee. He attended Park Rapids High School and graduated in 1943. He then worked for the University of Minnesota Dairy Department and took classes at the Agriculture College. In 1944, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at Memphis, Tenn., Naval Air Station and Norman, Okla., Naval Air Station and earned a 3rd class Aviation Ordinance Rating. He was assigned to pilot cadet training and was sent to Kansas State College and later to Dartmouth College at New Hampshire. The Navy then elected to close down the reserve program and he was honorably discharged and returned to Minnesota where he worked at Brainerd, Minn., as a Dairy Herd Improvement Association Supervisor. In 1948, he went to Berkeley, Calif., to work. California did not appeal to Glenn and he returned to Nebraska, his father's home state. He enrolled at the College of Agriculture at Lincoln, and remained there until graduation in June of 1952. At the University, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Zeta and Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society Fraternities. On June 7, 1953, he married Betty Jane Schmohr of DeWitt. Glenn assumed a high school teaching position as a Vocational Agriculture Instructor at Ashland until 1954. At that time, Glenn and Betty moved to Mitchell where Glenn taught Vocational Agriculture until 1961. He then took a position as sales-engineer for an irrigation company at Gering. In 1964, he opened a metal fabricating business at Mitchell, which, in 1965, branched into an Irrigation Well and Pump Contracting business, In 1970, the business was relocated to Alliance and later became Nelson Wells, Inc. He has been associated with St. John's Lutheran Church, National and Nebraska Water Well associations, formerly served on the Nebraska Boys Ranch board of directors, a former president of the Nebraska Vocational Agriculture Association, member of eagles Lodge and served as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 214. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Inga Nelson, infant brother Nye and sister Elaine Wetherbee. He is survived by his wife Betty of Alliance; sons Kirk of Columbus, Rick and wife Lisa and Mark and wife Shardel of Alliance; and grandchildren, Brandon Baker and Bethany of Columbus, and Derek, Devin, Zachary, Kelby and Kaelie of Alliance. He also is survived by one sister, Yvonne Nelson of Salida, Colo.; nieces Janet Johnson and family of Franktown, Colo., and Jill Nelson of Alexandria, Va.; and nephew Chad Nelson of Palm Springs, Calif.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 24, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be given St. John's Lutheran Church or Nebraska Boys Ranch. Dugan-Kramer of Scottsbluff is in charge of cremation.

Milton T. Danbom, 101

(July 23) HEMINGFORD - Milton T. "Pete" Danbom, 101, passed away Sunday morning July 22, 2001, at the Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born June 19, 1900, in Randolph, the son of Andrew Gust (a Swedish immigrant) and Bertha (Hall) Danbom.

When Pete was about 8 years old, the family moved to Delta, Colo., living there until 1910 when the family moved to Hemingford. Pete attended the Hemingford schools until the 10th grade and then he attended a Business college in Grand Island for a year. He grew up in Hemingford and worked with his father in the cement and masonry trade. He was married to his first wife Martha Wiltsey in November 1920. To this union a son Loren was born. Milton's sister Alfreda Toohey and her husband Leo adopted Loren after Martha died shortly after the birth.

Milton and Grace E. White were married April 3, 1926. To this union seven children were born. Alan Danbom (Alice) of Hemingford, Dorothy Ray (Charles) of Hemingford, Norma Saling (William) of Pasco, Wash., William Danbom (Margaret) of Curtis, Margaret Donnelly (Lane) of Federal Way, Wash., Paul Danbom (Barbara) of Christmas Valley, Ore., and David Danbom (Beverly) of Pensacola, Fla. Pete was a resident at the Hemingford Community Care Center since 1995.

He celebrated his 100th birthday on June 19, 2000, and was congratulated by several relatives and friends in the community. He celebrated his 101st birthday last month. He worked at the trade his father taught him until 1932 when he operated a Texaco gas station in Niobrara Avenue in Hemingford. It was known as Peteās Texaco. In 1935 he gave up his lease and operated a trucking business. In 1937 he started farming and farmed until retiring in 1979 when he and Grace moved to town.

For several years he continued with his former trade of masonry and house plastering while still operating the farm. He has plastered many homes in the Hemingford and Alliance area and has laid brick and block on several more. His favorite project was building fireplaces in homes. He had served on the Board of Directors of the Hemingford Cooperative Telephone Co. and was serving as the Chairman when the company converted to a dial system. He also served on the Hemingford Rural Fire District Board of Directors, and was the president of that board for several years. He was a member of the Hemingford Chapter of the American War Dads; a former Odd Fellow; a former Lions Club member and a 79-year member of the United Methodist Church in Hemingford. Pete played with some of the local softball and baseball teams during the 1930's.

Those preceding him in death were his first wife Martha, and his second wife Grace, his parents and his brothers Arthur and Marion, his sisters Gladys and Alfreda, 2 granddaughters and 1 great-granddaughter, cousins and several other relatives. His survivors include all of his children, 18 Grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, a great-great step-granddaughter and a host of friends and relatives.

Memorial services will be held Monday, August 13, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford. Pastor Craig Collins will officiate. Interment will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be given to the Van Fund at the Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donald W. Knapp, 65

(July 23) RIVERTON, Wyo. Š Donald W. Knapp, 65, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at his rural home at Riverton. He was born Oct. 9, 1935 at Alliance. His parents were Fredrick Carl and Augusta Fredrica (Haeffner) Knapp.

He married Helen Girard on Nov. 29, 1956 at Alliance. They moved from Alliance in 1961 and worked for Plains Furniture at Riverton. They purchased the business in 1965. Knapp also farmed. He was a past member of Lions and Sertoma, a Riverton Volunteer Fireman, and member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife Helen of the home; three sons, Terry Knapp of Chadron,Rick Knapp of Gillette, and Mike Knapp of Laramie; two daughters, Colette Miller of Riverton, and Brenda Stearns of Valley Center, Calif.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandaughter. He also is survived by one sister, Lucille Hashman of Alliance; and four brothers, Kermit Knapp and Dallas Knapp of Alliance, Carl Knapp of Whitney, and Gary Knapp of Crawford.

Mr. Knapp's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, at St. John Lutheran Church at Riverton, with Rev. Tim Sersen officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery at Riverton. Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Letha Linders, 81

(July 23) RUSHVILLE - Letha Linders, 81, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 31, 1919, at Brule. Her parents were Charles and Inez (Brink) Reitz.

She moved to Rushville in 1928 with her parents. She was married to William J. Linders March 1, 1938, at Rushville. He preceded her in death. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and had worked for many years at Wefso Drug at Rushville. She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Linders and Donald Linders of Rushville, and Gary Linders of San Francisco, Calif.; one daughter, Carolyn Bolek of Cheyenne, Wyo.; ten grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Fannie Johnson of Rushville, and Viva Klindworth of Independence, Mo.

Mrs. Linders' funeral will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 25, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Rushville, with Father Robert Karnish officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Rushville. A Rosary and wake service will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at Immaculate Conception Church. A memorial has been established for the Rushville Rescue Squad. Donations may be sent to Security First Bank, P.O. Box 550, Rushville, NE 69360-0550. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby A. Smith, 82

(July 23) ALLIANCE - Ruby A. Smith, 82, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. She was born April 5, 1919 in Akron, Colo. to Edward F. and Lula (Wright) House.

She received her education in Akron, Colo. She was married to Bob Higgins on Sept. 17, 1934. They had three children. Mr. Higgins preceded her in death. She was married to Henry E. Russell, Sr. in 1944. They had one son. Mr. Russell preceded her in death. She was later married to Orval Smith on June 21, 1952, at Mullen. She cooked on various ranches throughout the Sandhills of Nebraska. They moved to Mitchell in 1974. He preceded her in death. She moved to Crossroads Assisted Living at Alliance in May 2000. She was a member of Whitman's Women's Club and the Extension Club. She is survived by three sons, Clifford G. Higgins of Alliance, Robert L. Higgins of Gurnsey, Wyo., and Henry E. Russell, Jr. of North Platte; one daughter, Delores H. "Dee" Hampton of Mitchell; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She also is survived by two brothers, Floyd G. House of Phoenix, Ariz., and Rollin G. House of Burwin, Ill.; and two stepsons, Donald Smith and LeRoy "Pete" Smith, of Burwell.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with Pastor Scott Mathis officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 9 a.m. until service. A memorial has been established to the family.

Sister M. Borromea, 90

(July 23) ALLIANCE - Sister M. Borromea Befit, 90, died Monday, July 22, 2002, at Marian Residence. She was born May 18, 1912, at Odessa, Russia to Martin and Barbara (Meyer) Befit.

She professed her vows as a Sister of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity on Aug. 18, 1933. She served her ministry in New York, Ohio, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska. She retired in 1986 in Alliance. She is survived by her brothers, Mike and wife Regina of Rugby, N.D., Joe and wife Marie of Karlsruhe, N.D., and Clem and wife Shirley of Velva, N.D.; and sisters Catherine and husband Raymond of Minot, N.D., Magdalen of Rugby, N.D., and Blanche of Velva, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, one brother and five sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 25, at Marian Residence with Fr. Vince Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 24, at Marian Residence. Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, 1104 Toluca Ave., Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
