Wayne Schanche
Delaware resident, 82
Wayne Curtis Schanche, 82, of Wilmington, Del., passed away Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, peacefully at home, after a short illness, with his family at his side.
He was the beloved son-in-law of Hazel and Wilbur J. Miller, long-time residents of York County.
Wayne was born on Jan. 25, 1920, in Menno, S.D., the first of three children to Joseph and Anna Marie Christopherson Schanche. He was welcomed into the fellowship of Christ's Church through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on Feb. 8, 1920, at Elim Lutheran Church near Menno, S.D.
Wayne was a management analyst in the Commissioner's Office of the Social Security Administration, Woodlawn, Maryland, retiring after 35 years of service. He grew with the system, working in Chicago, Kansas City and Baltimore, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Miller Schanche; three children, Gary Wayne Schanche and his wife Carol of Savoy, Ill., Greg Lynn Schanche of Havre de Grace, Md., and Susan Kay Schanche Heiss and her husband, Ralph, of Wilmington, Del.; and eight grandchildren, Kristin, Kimberly and Matthew Schanche, Laura Schanche, and Shawn, Ryan, Tyler and Kyle Heiss.
Wayne and Virginia moved to Wilmington, Del., in 1989 and became active and supportive members of Concordia Lutheran Church.
Services will be held at the Metz Chapel in York at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003. Family and friends may visit at 10 a.m., prior to the services. Interment will be at the Greenwood cemetery in York.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church, McCool Junction, in memory of Hazel and Wilbur Miller, or to Concordia Lutheran Church, 2003 Silverside Road, Wilmington, Del., 19810.

Donald Lee Peterson
77, Stromsburg resident
Donald Lee Peterson, age 77, of Stromsburg, passed away March 21, 2003 at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Services will be held Tuesday, March 25 at 10:00 a.m. at the Stromsburg Baptist Church with Pastor Duane Tweeten officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, March 24 from 4-7 p.m. at the Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetary.
Don was born June 6, 1925 at York, Nebraska to Emil Samuel and Celia Anna (Larson) Peterson. He attended District 34 country school southwest of Stromsburg. He was baptized at the Stromsburg Baptist Church in 1940. He attended Stromsburg High School, graduating in 1943. He then served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war Don returned home where he began farming.
On November 16, 1952 Don was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Sterup at the Stromsburg Baptist Church. To this union three sons were born.
Don farmed south of Stromsburg and later began serving as a local rural mail carrier for the Stromsburg Post Office until retiring in 1989.
Don served on the Farmers Coop and the county extension boards. He was a 4-H leader, a past legion commander and a 42-year member of the Stromsburg Legion. Don had been active in the Stromsburg Senior Center. He had also been very active in the Stromsburg Baptist Church, serving over the years as Deacon, Trustee, and Camp Coordinator. He was also an assistant in the primary and nursery departments and had been a former choir member.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Peterson of Stromsburg, three sons, John of Stromsburg, Jay and wife Jacki of Stromsburg, Lee and wife Michel Peterson of Stromsburg, six grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews, and by other relatives, friends, and a number of children who knew him as "Papa Pete."
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Ralph Peterson, and one sister Dorothy Jean Appleton.

Jeanette A. Pankoke
Fairmont resident, 69
Jeanette A. Pankoke, 69, of Fairmont died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in Lincoln.
She was born to Edward and JoHanna (Staehr) Noler on Aug. 11, 1933, at Cordova.
Survivors include her husband, Burdette H. "Butch" Pankoke of Fairmont; sons, Randy (Jeanne) Pankoke of Lincoln, Jeff (Marilyn) Pankoke of Lincoln, Jamey (Joanna) Pankoke of Fairmont; brother, Merle Noler of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; nine grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Fairmont Community Church, Fairmont. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Memorials may be directed to the Fairmont Rescue Unit. Graveside services will be held at Fairmont Public cemetery. Officiating is the Rev. Betsy Galloway-Carew.
Jeanette A. Pankoke

Jeanette A. Pankoke, 69, of Fairmont died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Fairmont Community Church, Fairmont. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Millie Muhle
Columbus resident, 92
Millie Muhle, 92, of Columbus died Jan. 7, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.
She was born March 9, 1910, in Leigh, Neb., to Gustave and Meta (Hoffmann) Hilbert. She went to school in Leigh and graduated from Leigh High School and then attended business school in Grand Island.
On Sept. 12, 1928, Millie married
Arnold D. Muhle in Leigh. She lived her entire life in the Leigh area until moving to Columbus in 1965. After moving to Columbus, she worked in the kitchen at Columbus High School for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the quilting club at St. John's Lutheran Church and she also enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include four sons, David (Karen) Muhle of Wayne, Kenneth (Edna) Muhle of Longmont, Colo., Donald (Ina Mae) Muhle of Columbus, Arnold (Pat) Muhle Jr. of Columbus; three daughters, Joan Zuroski of Omaha, Elaine (Dale) Euchner of York, Shirley (Clinton) Johannes of Columbus; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold D. Muhle; brothers, Ernest and Hans Hilbert; four grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Edward Zuroski.
Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Shell Creek Church in rural Columbus by the Rev. Peter Jark-Swain. Interment will be in Calvary cemetery, rural Platte County. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Gass Haney Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 10, at St. John's Lutheran Shell Creek in rural Columbus. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 a.m.

John L. Paschang
California resident, 84
John L. Paschang, 84, York native and longtime resident of Long Beach, Calif., died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at Omaha. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary of York.
Ruth French Chapman
California resident
Ruth French Chapman died on Feb. 21, 2003, in Chula Vista, Calif. She was born on Feb. 20, 1907, in Salem, Neb., daughter of Frank Elliott French and Alice Adelaide Moe.
The French family moved to Lincoln in 1912. Ruth attended the University of Nebraska from 1924-1929. In 1997 she was honored as an outstanding educator by the University's Teachers' College, and in 2000 she was presented the University Alumni Achievement Award.
Ruth taught in York for two years. In 1938 she moved to California and married
Carroll Wages, a former York resident. They had two sons, Kent and Brian. Ruth taught at Brentwood and Burbank schools in California.
After a divorce, Ruth returned to York in 1948 where she managed Chapman's, a ladies clothing store, for Bill Chapman and his sister, Dix. In 1951 she was elected to the York School Board.
She returned to California in 1956 to teach. Bill Chapman and Ruth were married
the following year. Ruth established the first library at the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She received a PTA Honorary Life Membership Award.
Ruth retired in 1972. She served on the Sweetwater Union High School District Board for 25 years. In 1994 she was honored with the opening of the Ruth French Chapman Center for the Performing Arts in Chula Vista.
Ruth was hospitalized in January 2003 following an automobile accident and died in Sharps Medical Center, Chula Vista. She is survived by her sons and a granddaughter Emily.
A memorial service will be held at the Ruth French Chapman Center for the Performing Arts in Chula Vista, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1. Inurnment will be at Maple cemetery in Salem, Neb.

Lynn Knerr
Stromsburg resident, 61
Lynn Ray Knerr, 61, died Feb. 8, 2003, at the Aurora, Colo., Hospital after a lingering battle with lung disease.
He was born on May 25, 1941, to Loyal and Evelyn (Cook) Knerr in Stromsburg.
Lynn was baptized in the Stromsburg Methodist Church and graduated from Stromsburg High School with the class of 1959. He attended Kearney State College and then moved to Denver, Colo., to work with Quinn McGill. He retired in 1997 because of his health.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Joyce (Knerr) and Chris Sawyer of Ashland; nephews, Christopher (Cheryl) Sawyer of Chula Vista, Calif., and Adam (Sandi) Sawyer of Omaha; niece Cindy (Bob) Sodders of West Des Moines; grandnieces and nephews Christopher and Danielle Sawyer, Ryan and Patrick Sawyer and Sam and Emma Sodders.
Memorials will be sent to the Stromsburg School Foundation.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 1, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg with the Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Stromsburg cemetery.
Cora Evelyn "Pat" Tucker
81, Fairmont resident
Cora Evelyn "Pat" Tucker, age 81 years, of Fairmont, Nebraska, passed away at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora, Nebraska on Thursday afternoon, March 20, 2003. Pat was born on May 21, 1921 at Edgar, Nebraska to Charles and Adelia (Falwell) Patton. She was raised as a child in Fairmont, where she graduated from Fairmont High School with the Class of 1940. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Tucker on March 15, 1941 at Denver, Colorado. She and Lloyd returned to Fairmont to live their life together, and to this union there were six children. Pat was a homemaker for most of her life, until in the 1960's, when Pat was employed at Mumby's (and later the Stockmans Club in the 1970's and 1980's) in Fairmont. Following her retirement, she was a Green Thumb volunteer at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont and also volunteered at the Fairmont Senior Center, where she spent many enjoyable hours with her best friends playing cards.
Pat was a respected member of the Fairmont community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairmont, a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of Royal Neighbors, the American Legion Auxiliary at Fairmont, and the Women's Club at Fairmont.
Survivors include one son, Lloyd (and wife, Jackie) Tucker of Grand Island, Nebraska; four daughters: Marylee (and husband, Chuck) Edwards of Fairmont, Nebraska, Joyce (and husband, Merritt) Otoupal of York, Nebraska, Shirley (and husband, Rick) Jones of Sutton, Nebraska, and Judy (and husband, Gary) Baumer of Rocky Face, Georgia; sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; two sisters: Annabell Blanton of Peoria, Illinois and Ardith Rockeman of San Pablo, California. Pat was preceded in death by her parents; one sister (Dorothy Dee Wilkerson), one daughter (Donna Lee Tucker), her husband Lloyd Tucker, and two grandsons (James and Charles).
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at the Fairmont United Methodist Church in Fairmont, Nebraska with Pastor Betsy Gallaway-Carew officiating. Interment will be in the Fairmont cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM on Friday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.
Cecelia Redmon
Iowa resident, 54
Cecelia Elaine Redmon died March 25, 2003. She was born on Oct. 13, 1948, in Manchester, Iowa, and was the daughter of Charles E. and Eleanore (Thomas) Redmon.
She grew up in Delhi, Iowa, and graduated from Maquoketa Valley of Delhi High School. She took a short course at A.I.B. in Des Moines. She worked at IMT Insurance Co., Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank in Manchester, Iowa, and was secretary at the Ames News Stand for the Ames News Agency until her marriage.
She married
William D. Leslie at Calvary United Methodist Church in Ames, Iowa, on Aug. 26, 1978. They moved first to Vincent, and then to Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was an EMT, worked for the Vincent Coop, Mutual of Omaha Insurance Co. and The Fort Dodge Messenger. In 1989 they moved to York. Cecilia worked for The Farm Bureau until she left to become a full time mother.
She is survived by her husband; a son, John; her mother, Eleanore Redmon of Ogden, Iowa, and a brother and sister-in-law, James and LaNette Redmon of Fremont. In addition to these, she is survived by her "father figure" Robert Wirtz of Ogden, iowa, his family, and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and an infant brother.
Arrangements are being made at Adams Funeral Home in Ames, Iowa. Burial will be in Ames on Friday, March 28, 2003.
Roger L. Clark
York resident, 72
Roger L. Clark, 72, of York died Saturday at Knoxville, Iowa. Roger owned and operated Clark Auto Parts with his family in York since 1954.
He was born Oct. 1, 1930, in Shelby County, Iowa, to Shirley and Leona (Borkowski) Clark. Roger was a graduate of the Manning High School in Manning, Iowa, and had attended Drake University. He was in the Army during the Korean conflict and served as a heavy equipment instructor.
Roger was married
in 1953 to Berna Welborn at Springfield, Mo. He was a past president of the Nebraska Automotive Recycling Assn. and had been a member of the National Automotive Dismantlers & Recyclers Assn.
He is survived by his wife Berna of York; two sons, Tom (Jane) Clark of York and Jim Clark of Flagstaff, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Lauren Clark of York. Preceding him in death were his parents and his son Daniel.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery of York. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
