Charles C. Phillips
Dunn, N.C., resident
Charles C. Phillips, 72, of Dunn, N.C., died Thursday, March 13, 2003, in Ervin, N.C., after a short illness. He was born Nov. 26, 1930, to Andrew Phillips and Lillian Tew Phillips. After the death of his father when Charles was 13, he became the wage earner of the family by working in the Ervin Cotton Mills and later started his own trucking company doing long hauls along the entire East Coast.
On Jan. 20, 1963, he married
Viola Obermier Tew of Dunn, N.C.
He is survived by his mother, Lillian Phillips of Morristown; one sister, Peggy Kirk of Morristown; his wife, Viola Phillips of Waco; four stepchildren, Pernon (Joyce) Tew of Rock Island, Ill., Austin (Jackie) Tew of Dunn, N.C., Viona (Bill) Adkisson of Elmwood, Tenn., and Latitia (Thomas) Leishman of Willsville, Utah; 16 step-grandchildren and 33 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew; one sister, Gladys; and one brother, Shelton.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 16, 2003, at 3:30 p.m. in the Spring Branch Baptist Church of Dunn, N.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Oliver A. Krahling
Stromsburg resident, 90
Oliver A. "Ollie" Kahling, 90, died Jan. 2, 2003, at his home with Hospice Care.
He was born Nov. 5, 1912, on the Adam Krahling farm near Ashton, Iowa, the son of Adam Daniel and Martha Helen (Rachuy) Krahling. He attended Dale Township #6 School near Ashton.
He was united in marriage to Marian Anderson, May 4, 1941, in Stromsburg. He was drafted into the Army Sept. 24, 1942, and served in the South Pacific for 3 1/2 years. He returned home and was a truck driver until he retired.
He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg since 1945, Lutheran Brotherhood, and the American legion. He was an avid Husker and Chicago Cubs fan and loved playing pool at the senior center.
Survivors include his wife, Marian, of Stromsburg; two daughters, Jan (Terry) Branting of Lincoln and Kathy (Matt) Shonsey of Grand Island; four grandchildren, Adam and Ashley Branting and Erin and Erica Shonsey; two brothers, Earl Krahling of San Jacinto, Calif., and Alvin "Chub" Krahling of George, Iowa; one sister, Helen Haack of Sioux Falls, S.D.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, George, Erwin, Elmer and Bill.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 6, at 10:30 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Keith Brozek officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 5, from 3-5 p.m., at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be at the Stromsburg cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Salem Lutheran Church or the Stromsburg Senior Center.
Dean Mann
Aurora resident, 82
Dean Charles Mann, 82, of Aurora, died Friday morning, Jan. 3, 2003, at Hamilton Manor after a lengthy illness.
Mann, the son of Clarence L. and Cora (Gaisford) Mann was born on a farm south of Ellis, on June 8, 1920.
He attended rural schools in Jefferson and Gage Counties, and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1938.
He was united in marriage to Doris I. Kollekowski on Jan. 24, 1942, at Marysville, Kan. He worked for several farmers at an early age and then worked in a Beatrice factory for several years.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He served in World War II in Europe and he received six battle stars, a good conduct medal and a Presidential citation. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. Upon his return from the service, he started farming in Ellis. In 1957, they moved to Aurora and he was a dairy farmer until 1973 when they moved to town. He then worked at the Aurora Co-op for 19 years, seven of which were part-time.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed making wooden items and attending craft shows. He liked to fish, play cards and do activities with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lester, Orra and Keith; and five sisters, Leila Wierman, Esther Hudson, Florence Nickeson, Faye Carpenter and Vivian Bartlett.
Survivors include his wife, Doris of Aurora; three sons, Larry (Vernie) Mann of Cullman, Ala., Terry (Connie) and Tim Mann of Aurora; two daughters, Karen (Ron) Perry of Aurora and Marcy (Kevin) Senff of York; 12 grandchildren, Jeff, Jim, Bradley, Blaine, Megan and Tammy Mann; Kandi Marshall; Christy Raasch; Brittney and Jacob Senff; Alan and Rod Perry; 11 great-grandchildren; and Helen Mann of Fultondale, Ala.
He is also survived by five sisters, Clare (Francis) Howe and Blanche (Lyman) Bartlett of Beatrice, Bethal (Elmer) Krebs and Letty Phelps of Lincoln; and his twin sister, Doris (Kenneth) Menke of Aurora; four sisters-in-law, Lydia Mann of Beatrice, Beverly (Paul) Reedy of Wymore, Etta Kollekowski of Hardin, Mont., and Diane Kollekowski of Beatrice.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 6, at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. Rev. Seth Leypoldt will official. Interment will be in the Aurora cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Sunday, at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary.
Marie Ekeler
Exeter resident, 90
Marie D. Ekeler, 90, of Exeter, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 in Exeter.
She was born Sept. 14, 1912, at Exeter, the daughter of Aloysius and Teresa (Robbins) Ruhl.
Survivors include her daughters, Agnes Anderson of Exeter, and Kathy (Dean) Sue of Exeter; a sister, Teresa Erdkamp of Exeter; and four grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 14, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Geneva. Graveside services will be held at the Exeter cemetery with Father Kenneth Borowiak officiating.
A Rosary Service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the family.

Exeter resident, 90
Marie D. Ekeler, 90, of Exeter, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, in Exeter.
She was born Sept. 14, 1912, at Exeter, the daughter of Aloysius and Teresa (Robbins) Ruhl.

Lorene Charlton, 81, of Lincoln, former longtime York resident, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at Lincoln. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary of York.
Elizabeth "Bess" Barrie
Iowa resident, 92
Elizabeth "Bess" (Curran) Barrie, 92, of Iowa City, Iowa, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at the Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Elizabeth was born July 28, 1910 in York, Nebraska, the daughter of Thomas and Mary E. (Menlove) Curran.
She was united in marriage to Edward E. Barrie on September 18, 1940 in Crete, Nebraska.
She was employed at the York Blank Book Company as a bookbinder before becoming a devoted mother and homemaker.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church since moving to Iowa City in 1991.
Elizabeth is survived by two sons and their wives; Edward T. and Carolyn Barrie of San Diego, California, Robert J. and Judy Barrie of Iowa City, two grandchildren, Laura and Joel Barrie of San Diego, California and one sister and her husband, Nelle C. Samson and her husband C.A., of Denver, Colorado.
Mrs. Barrie was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and four brothers
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2003, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Iowa City. Burial will be in St. Joseph cemetery, Iowa City.
Friends may call from 4 until 6 p.m. Friday at the Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City.

Arlo Vandenbos
Oregon resident, 70
Arlo Ledell "Van" Vandenbos of Gresham, Ore., died Jan. 1, 2003.
He was born June 8, 1932, on the Rose Bud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His parents were farmers who later moved to Valentine. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Much of his four years of service was spent in Adak, Alaska, during the Korean War. He won the Golden Gloves Boxing Trophy.
On Feb. 28, 1954, while stationed at the Naval Depot in Hastings, he married
Ruth Ann Junge, a registered nurse from York. During their early years of marriage, Van attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln while Ruth worked as a surgical nurse.
After earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Van began a 30-year career with the Soil Conservation Service. Van and Ruth raised five children while moving to various assignments in Wyoming and Oregon, settling in Gresham, Ore., for the past 25 years.
He enjoyed camping, backpacking, horseback riding, skiing and hunting. He like rodeos, visiting national parks, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. Van was a skilled carpenter and handyman.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Mildred Vandenbos, and his brother, Ivan.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann; children, Cheri and Gary Smith of Baker City, Ore.; Bruce and Rachel Vandenbos of Boise, Idaho; Lori and Hart Rutherford of Fredericksburg, Va.; Angela Vandenbos of Portland, Ore.; Keith and Tiffany Vandenbos of Eugene, Ore.; brothers, Leland and Curt Vandenbos; sisters, Yvonne Schroeder and Luetta Chambers, all of whom live in Colorado. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Gresham, Ore.
Delmer H. Richters
Seward resident, 89
Delmer H. Richters, 89, of Seward died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, in Seward.
He was born May 28, 1913, near Staplehurst and was a retired farmer and cattle feeder. He married
Hannah Buell on Dec. 21, 1935, at Gresham. He was a member of Seward Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Hannah; son and wife, Dennis and Lois Richters of Utica; daughter-in-law and husband, Rita and Wilmer Ritterling of Utica; brother and wife, Wilfred (Joe) and LaRue Richters of Seward; sister-in-law, Elsa Richters of Seward; grandchildren, Mike, Allen, Jason Richters, Jody Wiemer and Janette Nielsen; nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Alma (Brandt) Richters; son, Gene; and brother, Willard (Bill) Richters.
Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Goehner with the Rev. Arnold Jurchen officiating. Burial will be in the Utica cemetery.
