Florence Driewer

Hebron resident, 88

Florence Marie Driewer, 88, of Hebron died Jan. 6, 2002, at Perkins Pavilion Nursing Home in Hastings.

She was born on Aug. 16, 1913, at Agra, Kan. She graduated from Agra High School and attended the University of Northern Colorado.

She was married to Henry C. Driewer at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kensington, Kan., on Sept. 26, 1937. They had two children, Bruce and Janice. They lived in the Hampton area for 27 years where they were engaged in farming. In 1964 they moved to Hebron where they purchased and managed the Blue Valley Bowl in Hebron.

Florence was a charter member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Hampton and member of Missionary League and Ladies Aid; charter member of Faith Lutheran Church of Hebron, Ladies Aid and Missionary League; and member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler. She was also a member of the Hospital Guild when the new hospital was built in Hebron and helped at Things and Stuff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry C. on Oct. 15, 1994; son, Bruce on May 31, 1985; daughter, Janice (Dale) Klaumann of Hebron; one grandson; brothers, Charles Halbert, Chester Halbert, and Walter Halbert; sister, Ruby DuBois; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Services will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler on Thursday, Jan. 10, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Duane Fahr officiating. Burial will be in Hebron City cemetery in Hebron. Visitation will be Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Price Funeral Home in Hebron and two hours before services at the church. Memorials to the family's choice may be sent to the Price Funeral Home at 210 South 3rd St. Hebron, NE 68370.

Irene Ferrell

Florida resident, 91

Irene (Bachman) Ferrell, 91, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of McCool Junction, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Shell Point Village in Fort Myers.

She was born Aug. 26, 1910, on the family farm southwest of McCool Junction to William J. and Hallie (Boren) Shipley. She graduated from York College with an A.B. degree and received her M.S. degree in speech at the University of Wisconsin. Irene taught school for 33 1/2 years, starting in rural District #18, and taught a number of years at McCool Public Schools. She was professor of speech at York College from 1943 to 1945.

In 1951, Irene married Walter E. Bachman, dean of York College. After Walter died in 1971, she moved to Shell Point Village in Fort Myers. There she met and married Marcine B. Ferrell. He also preceded her in death. Irene loved and enjoyed Mr. Ferrell's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as her own.

Irene was a lifelong member of the McCool United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Metz Chapel in York with burial in Greenwood cemetery west of McCool Junction. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, and 9 a.m., Wednesday, until service time. The family suggests memorials to the McCool First United Methodist Church. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.**

Merna Marie Walford

Tekamah Resident (former Gresham resident) 73

Merna Marie Walford died July 29, 2003 at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair, at the age of 73.

She was born Oct. 12, 1929 to Ernest and Tennie (Schlesinger) Lees in Shelby.

She was a 1946 graduate of Shelby High School. She taught in rural schools for two years before marrying Wayne Walford in Shelby, Nov. 28, 1948. They moved to a farm near Gresham where they farmed for 24 years.

Following her husband's death in 1973, she was employed as a secretary to the Polk County Extension Agent in Osceola for seven years. She spent 16 years working in Lincoln before moving to Tekamah in 2001.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Johnson and husband, Bill of Tulsa, Okla.; son, John Walford and wife, Jane of Tekamah; grandsons, Preston and Carter Walford of Tekamaha; two sisters, Rogene Christensen of Holiday Island, Ark., and Betty Whitmore of Port Angeles, Wash.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents and sister, Opal.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 4, 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tekamah with the Rev. Jane Boeschen officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Lawn cemetery, Gresham at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Noel Dekalb officiating.

Visitation will be held Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m. at Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah and Monday at the church one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Jerome Harre

Exeter resident, 69

Jerome Edward Harre, 69, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home near Exeter.

He was born May 31, 1931 at the Harre family farm just northeast of Exeter to John Henry and Theresa E. (Leif) Harre.

Jerome grew up on the family farm near Exeter and graduated from Exeter High School in 1949. He was drafted into the Army in June of 1952, where he was stationed at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo., until June of 1954. Following his discharge, he returned to Exeter where he purchased the Harre family farm in 1965. He continued to farm the home place until his death. He began a 50-year career as a carpenter with Bill Boren Lumber Yard in Fairmont. He then worked for J.P. Cunningham Construction of York and Harre Construction of York. At the time of his death he was still actively working for Harre Construction Inc. It is estimated that he had a hand in building nearly 350 homes in the area as well as many remodels.

He married Cathie J. Miller of Exeter on Nov. 8, 1952, and the couple had six children. He was a member of St. Stephens Catholic Church in Exeter and the American Legion William Sullivan Post #218 in Exeter. During his 48-year marriage he enjoyed dancing with his wife and attending country music festivals and shows. He spent his time at home working with his horses, restoring antiques, working outdoors in the garden and in his fields. He enjoyed teaching his three sons the carpentry profession and his three daughters how to sing. He enjoyed telling stories, being with family and friends, meeting new people and humming, singing and whistling.

Survivors include his wife, Cathie of Exeter; sons, Alan of Roca, Gary of Exeter and Darrell (Therese) of Wichita, Kan.; daughters, Carol (Rod) Jensen of Parker, Colo., Janice (Mikel) Picard of York, Sharon (Roger) Kenaston of Weston; brothers, Eugene (Mary Ellen) of Dow City, Iowa, Al (Loretta) of Lincoln, Frank (Gayla) of York; sisters, Rita Mae Coffey and Evelyn Coffey of Exeter, Gladys Coffey of Crete, Doris (Richard) Nicholas of Exeter, Joan Kuska of Exeter, Pat (William) Hanson of Tucson, Ariz., Jeanette (Jerry) Paulus of Loveland, Colo., Leona Smith of Omaha and L.D. Smith of McCool Junction; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sharon Harre of Exeter and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parent; brothers, Paul and his wife Peg, Lawrence and wife Peg, and Kenneth and wife Darlene; brothers-in-law, Leonard Coffey, Edward Coffey, Charlie Coffey and Butch Kuska.

Funeral services were held at St. Stephens Catholic Church on Jan. 11, 2001 with Father Kenneth Borowiak officiating. Mike Zeleny was organist and Mark Jenkins, Vanessa Heese and Bob Kenaston performed "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "I'll Fly Away," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," and "Where the Roses Never Fade." Casket bearers were Richard Coffey, Kenny Harre, Gary Paulus, Roger Harre, Kevin Harre and Daniel Smith. Interment was in the Exeter cemetery with military honors by Wm. Sullivan American Legion Post #218 with arrangements in charge of Farmer Funeral Home. Memorials are directed to the Jerome Harre Family.

Anna Blatt

Geneva resident, 63

Anna L. Blatt, 63, of Geneva, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 at Lincoln.

She was born June 7, 1937 at Geneva to Edward and Elsie (Schroeder) Hinrichs.

Survivors include her husband, William Blatt of Geneva; sons, Steven G. Roemmich of Geneva and Stanley D. Roemmich of Kearney; daughters, Brenda Lee Walker and Joanna Mae Roemmich, both of Geneva; step-sons, Michael W. Blatt of Louisville and Timothy C. Blatt of Geneva; brothers, Edward "Butch" Hinrichs, Larry E. Hinrichs and Rodney L. Hinrichs, all of Geneva; sisters, Iola M. Engle of LaVista and Jean Ann Peppie of Shickley.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at Grace Lutheran Church in Geneva with the Rev. Darren Green officiating. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Memorials in care of the family.

Frank Armstrong

Former York resident, 89

Frank B. Armstrong, 89, formerly of York, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Roseville, Calif.

He was born Nov. 27, 1912, near McCool Junction to Edwin and Rhoda (Brown) Armstrong. He married Marjorie Kerwood on Sept. 27, 1936, at Osceola. She died in January of 2000. Frank was a service foreman at Consumers and Nebraska Public Power District for 35 years before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the First Christian Church in York.

Survivors include one son, Rod (Emelie) Armstrong of Roseville, Calif.; one granddaughter, Cindy (Duane) McCall; and two great-grandchildren, Holly and Casey McCall, all of Parker, Colo. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Penny Kerwood of Grand Island and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Marjorie; three sisters, Hazel Lofgren, Leona Janes and Della Rusler; four brothers, Earl, Claude, John and Ervin Armstrong.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in York with Phil Towle. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Metz Mortuary. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements. * *

York resident, 68

Marion L. Bankson, 68, or York, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at Trenton, Mo. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Anna E. Myers

Stromsburg resident, 85

Anna E. Myers, 85, of Stromsburg, a lifelong resident of Polk County, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at Columbus.

She was born Nov. 2, 1916, at Bollnas, Sweden, to Victor and Martha (Hed) Larson. She was a member of the Stromsburg Evangelical Covenant Church. On Aug. 7, 1937, she was married to Evan M. Myers in Stromsburg.

She is survived by one son, William 'Bill' (Rita) Myers of Blue Springs, Mo.; one daughter, Elizabeth 'Betty' Pierce of Fort Collins, Colo.; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Norris Larson of Osceola; two sisters, Norma Lindburg of Stromsburg and Pearl (Duane) Green of McCool Junction; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, at the Stromsburg Evangelical Covenant Church with the Rev. Robert Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Stromsburg cemetery. There will be no visitation due to cremation. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association at 7101 Newport Ave., Suite 305, Omaha 68152. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Larry Ludden

Arizona resident, 79

Larry Ludden, 79, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Kearney where he grew up and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 1946. He farmed in the Kearney area before moving to York where he owned and operated Ludden Farm Store.

Larry moved his family to Phoenix in 1962, where he founded Golden Heritage Homes. He was past president of the Home Builders Association of Central Arizona and served on the Phoenix Planning Commission. He was a life member of the Sertoma Club and a past president of the York and Scottsdale Clubs.

Larry is survived by his wife, Del, of Phoenix; daughter, Barbara and son-in-law Jeffrey Marks of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughter, Peggy and son-in-law Terry Brooks of Scottsdale; daughter-in-law, Leslie Ludden, also of Scottsdale; four grandchildren, Lindsey and Bailey Marks, Kacie and T. J. Brooks; and a sister, Addah Jane Hurst of Arlington, Va.

His son, Larry Jr., and brother, John, preceded him in death.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at St. Barnabas on the Desert Episcopal Church. Larry was an active member of St. Barnabas, serving on the vestry and was past president of the Memorial Gardens. Jean I. Wochner

Henderson resident, 82

Jean I. Wochner, 82, of Henderson, and formerly of York, Aurora, and Central City, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 13, 2002, at the Henderson Care Center in Henderson.

Jean was born Jan. 25, 1919, near Waco to Raymond and Beulah (Anstine) Inbody. The oldest of five children, she grew up in Waco, graduated from Waco High School in 1936, and worked for the Don Metz family in York. Jean was united in marriage to Harold L. Wochner on Oct. 10, 1937, at Lincoln. The couple lived in York, where they had five children and one foster son.

In 1959 the family moved to Aurora, where they lived until 1969 when they moved to Central City. In 1980, Harold retired and they moved to Henderson. Jean was a busy homemaker, great cook, and seamstress. She was an active member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and Aurora Chapter #68 Order of the Eastern Star, and in former years was active in Scouting, having served as a Cub Scout den leader and Girl Scout leader. Jean enjoyed reading and socializing with friends.

Survivors include her husband, Harold L. Wochner of Henderson; three daughters: Beverly Rhoneberger of Bedford, Texas, Marcia (and her husband, Jerry) Traudt of Aurora, Deborah (and her husband, Mark) Rau of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Dr. Robert (and his wife, Angie) Wochner of Mattoon, Ill.; one foster son: Anthony "Bill" (and his wife, Martha) Barnett of Camillus, N.Y.; one sister, Joan (and her husband, Bob) Ried of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; nine grandchildren: Alan and Michele Traudt of Aurora, Nicole, Adam, Ben, and Tony Wochner of Mattoon, Ill., James and Jason Rhineberger of Dallas, Texas, and Jakob Rau of San Antonio, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Harold Wochner in 1966; and three brothers (Bill, Joe and Rex Inbody).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the Aurora United Methodist Church in Aurora with the Rev. Joe Scahill and the Rev. Donald Nunnally officiating. Graveside committal services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Greenwood cemetery at York. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in Henderson. Memorials may be directed to the Aurora United Methodist Church or the Henderson Healthcare Services Care Center. Lewis Funeral Chapel of Henderson is in charge of arrangements.* *

Marion Bankson

York resident, 68

Marion L. Bankson, 68, of York died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Trenton, Mo.

He was born Nov. 2, 1932, in Trenton to Howard and Edna (Williams) Bankson. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. Marion married Darlene Peaker on June 22, 1952, in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked as parts manager at Moses Ford in York for 20 years, Anderson Ford in Grand Island and Quality Lincoln Mercury in Omaha before retirement. He was a member of and past master of the Masonic Lodge #56 A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Senior Companion Program, State of Nebraska and Busy Wheels.

He is survived by three daughters, Catherine (Dan) Danhauer of York, Deb (William) Cool of McCool Jct., Julia (David) Schram of Osceola; one son, Michael Bankson of Benedict; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his mother and father, Edna and Max Weitzell of Trenton, Mo.; sisters, Sharron Edwards of Augusta, S.C., and Sandra (Earl) Vencill of Trenton; brother, Louis (Emma) Bankson of Trenton; former wife, Darlene Bankson of York.

He was preceded in death by his father (Howard Bankson), two grandchildren and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 18, at Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran cemetery near Thayer. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
