Ensie Hanson

Stromsburg resident, 92

Ensie L. Hanson, 92, of Stromsburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001 at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Bob Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Palmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Finn

Colorado resident, 30

John Finn, 30, died Feb. 11, 2001, in Thornton, Colo. He is the son of Ingrid Finn and the late Joseph Finn. He was a graduate of York High School. Survivors include his mother, Ingrid Finn, and his stepfather, Brad Highstreet, of DuBois, Wyo.; a sister, Erin (Kelly) Littlefield of North Glen, Colo.; a brother, Patrick (Barbie) Finn of Omaha. Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 15, at Highland Mortuary Chapel in Thornton. Memorials in care of the family and condolences may be sent to Ingrid Finn, P.O. Box 1780, DuBois, Wyo., 82513.

Chris Stauffer

Iowa resident, 53

Chris Stauffer, 53, of 1003-215th Place, Boone, Iowa, died at the Boone County Hospital in Boone, Iowa, on Sunday morning, April 14, 2002, due to complications from cancer.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1949, in Tilden, Neb., the son of Glenn and Betty (Hannen) Stauffer.

Chris attended schools in Bloomfield and Wausau in Nebraska and graduated from York High School after the family moved to York in 1956. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and later the University of Nebraska, also in Lincoln. In 1983, Chris moved to Boone where he worked with his father at Mid-America Seed Researchers seed business. He also served as an advisor and counselor at the Work Activity Center in Boone.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and nature studies of trees, flowers, animals and astronomy, and took great interest in studies of all Indian tribes. A favorite pastime was woodcarving.

His grandparents, John and Edith Stauffer and Elmer Hannen preceded him in death.

Survivors include his parents, Glenn and Betty Stauffer of Boone, Iowa; one sister and brother-in-law, Vicki and Bob Andersen of Gretna, Neb., and his grandmother, Dolores Hannen of Meadow Grove, Neb.

Services will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Boone, Iowa, with Pastor John Hibbard officiating.

Interment will be Thursday afternoon, April 18, at 1:30 p.m. in Prospect Hill cemetery in Norfolk, Neb., with the Rev.

Donald Shonkwiler officiating.

Friends may call at the Evangelical Free Church in Boone on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society. Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements. * *

Harriet T. Carlson

York resident, 83

Harriet T. Carlson, 83, of York, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at York.

She was born Oct. 22, 1919, on a farm near Stromsburg, to Ernest and Edna (Carlson) Carlson. She was a 1935 graduate of Stromsburg High School and had worked as a draftsman in Chicago from 1943-1959. Later, she moved back to York and was employed at the Hearthstone for a number of years. She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg.

She is survived by one brother, Rev. Dr. Delmar and his wife, Zona, Carlson of Cherokee, Iowa; one sister, Phyllis Scamehorn of York; one sister-in-law, Delores Carlson of Stromsburg; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Milburn and Edsel; and a brother-in-law, Donald Scamehorn.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, at the Swede Home cemetery near Stromsburg with the Rev. Donna Durrett officiating. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Salem Lutheran Church at Stromsburg.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Waldo A. Dahlstedt

Arkansas resident, 86

Waldo Arthur Dahlstedt, 86, of Arkadelphia, Ark., died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the University of Arkansas Medical Science in Little Rock. Son of Arthur and Elsie Castile Dahlstedt, he was born Dec. 26, 1916, in York. Both he and his parents were Swedish.

He was a graduate of York Junior College in Nebraska. He was a Captain in the Army and served overseas during World War II. After the war he returned to Nebraska and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska. While at the University he met and married Faith Adele Wickersham.

Waldo moved his family to Arkadelphia in 1955. He was the first dean of the Graduate School at Henderson State University. He was active in school organizations such as Alpha Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon and ROTC. He was also active in the communtiy working with the Civitans and AARP. He belonged to the Falcon Club. He and Faith spent much of their retirement years traveling the world.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faith Adele Wickersham Dahlstedt, in 2001. Survivors are one son, David Wayne (Becki) Dahlstedt of Moutanin View, Ark.; one daughter, Georgann Kay (Lee) Bowsher of Vista, Calif.; and one granddaughter, Erika Lee Bowsher.

A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church in Arkadelphia on April 10. Interment was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia or to Henderson State University.

Virginia L. Cudaback

Lincoln resident, 73

Virginia L. Cudaback, 73, of Lincoln died Monday, April 28, 2003, in Lincoln.

She was born Jan. 6, 1930, on a farm near McCool Junction to Ivor F. and Ethel F. (Schoch) Bellows. She graduated from McCool High School in 1948 and married Curtis Cudaback on Aug. 1, 1948, in York. She worked in the State Hospital in Lincoln, was a waitress at the Corner Terrace and Lincoln Country Club and also worked at Sandy's Bar in Lincoln for 18 years. She was a member of the Moose Lodge #175 in Lincoln.

She is survived by three daughters, Linda (James) Childress, Ronda (Glenn) Pagel and Dette Collingham, all of Lincoln; two sons, Randy Cudaback of McCool Junction and Gregory (Mary) Cudaback of Lincoln; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Bellows of McCool Junction.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one brother, Delvin; one sister, Janis.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Metz Chapel in York. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, York. Memorials in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Viola K. Richert

Illinois resident, 81

Viola K. Richert, 81, of Beason, Ill., died on Tuesday, April 15. 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill. Her husband, John Richert, is related to the Richerts living in this vicinity.

Mrs. Richert worked as a legal secretary for Robert Humphrey, as a bookkeeper for Richert Electric and helped her husband with farming.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Lincoln and the Logan County Genealogical Society.

She was born Feb. 4, 1922, in Beason, daughter of Gustuv C. and Christine L. Budde Haseley. She married John H. Richert April 11, 1948, in Lincoln, Ill.

She is survived by her husband of Lincoln, Ill.; two sons, Les (Theresa) Richert of Lincoln and Ken (Karen) Richert of Beason; one sister, Eileen Riggs of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Scott) Shaffer of LIncoln and Kathie Huskins of Lincoln; two step-grandchildren, Cathy (Todd) O'Donaghue of Lincoln and David Vale of Bloomington, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Kaycee Huskins, both of Lincoln; five step-great-grandchildren, Ashley Bonaparte, Shaylyn and Nathan O'Donaghue of Lincoln and Lacy and Jordan Vale of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Emory "Herb" Haseley

Services were held Saturday, April 19, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Ill., with the Rev. Mark Carnahan presiding. Burial will be in the New Union cemetery in Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran School, Radio Ministry of Zion Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Henry O. Proehl

Arkansas resident, 84

Henry O. Proehl, 84, of West Fork, Ark., formerly of Bradshaw, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Washington Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 14, 1918, at Paullina, Iowa, the son of Henry and Elsie Wosnack Proehl.

He was retired as an associate engineer for the Nebraska Highway Department, serving 18 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. He was a Lutheran.

He is survived by two sons: Richard Proehl of York and Robert Proehl of Marietta, Ga.; four daughters, Jan Proehl of Blaine, Wash., Susan Holston of Nashville, Tenn., Karen Daake of Nixa, Mo., and Helen Baumgartel of Canton, Mont.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and relatives in Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bea Proehl, and a brother, Burnell.

Memorial services were at 10 a.m. today (Monday, May 5), at Moore's Chapel with the Rev. Roger Schoolcraft officiating. Burial is in National cemetery. Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Chambers

Grand Island resident, 79

Margaret P. Chambers, 79, of Grand Island died Saturday, May 3, 2003, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Mrs. Chambers was born on Dec. 6, 1923, in Merrick County to John and Rose (Trainor) Power.

Mrs. Chambers received her education in Merrick County. After her education she was employed at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. She was then employed as a salesperson for J.C. Penney's and I. Iagnins.

She married Lester Chambers on May 14, 1949, in Grand Island. Mrs. Chambers was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and St. Leo's Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband, Lester of Grand Island; two sons, Randall of Grand Island, and Alan of Lincoln; three daughters and son-in-law, Patricia Powell of Lincoln, Ann Chambers of Grand Island, and Susan and Patrick Barrett of Lincoln; eight grandchildren, Jason, Matt, Adam, and Ben Chambers and their mother Sherril Whiting; Kathleen and Daniel Chapman and their father, Stan; and Amelia and Audrey Barrett.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Chambers; six sisters, Dolores Zmek, Dorothy Armatys, Charlotte Pierce, Agnes Clouse, Theresa Brasseau, and Phyllis Williams; and by five brothers, Vincent Power, Richard Power, Robert Power, Owen Power, and James Alfred Power.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in York. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 pm. at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Stroke Foundation.

Wayne Shrader

Neligh resident, 79

Wayne Shrader, 79, of Neligh died Friday, May 2, 2003, at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh.

He was born May 20, 1923, near Ewing to Albert and Mae (Cushman) Shrader. He attended school at Ewing where he graduate with the class of 1940. He served in the Navy during World War II.

He was married to Ruth Waples on April 16, 1955, at Sidney, Iowa.

Wayne lived in Ewing where he farmed until moving to Neligh in 1965. He also drove a truck, hauling mobile homes out of Neligh for 20 years.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church, American Legion Sanders Post, Ampride Coffee Club, and the Antelope Country Club. He was also a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Orchard for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, David (Mary) Shrader of Fremont, John (Tina) Shrader of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Rachel Shrader of Neligh and Ruth (Kevin) McIlravy of York; nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Mark, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Neligh with the Rev. Ray Avidano officiating. Burial will be in the Ewing cemetery with flag presentation by the American Legion Sanders Post of Ewing. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Beyer Funeral Home in Neligh.
