Seward resident, 91

Dorothy M. Hill, 91, of Seward died May 3, 2003.

She was born on June 9, 1911, in Norborne, Mo. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Seward.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Susan Hill; brothers, Archie, Harold and Eldred Hill and Charles Hill Burson; sister and brother-in-law, Annabelle and Les Squires; William and Magdalene Hartmann and Don Hartmann.

She is survived by her brother, Woodrow Hill of Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Jennie Hill and Ginny Hill of Illinois; the Hartmann family, Della Hartmann, Bill and Doris Hartmann, Dick and Arlys Hartmann, Jim and Ardath Hartmann, all of Seward, Walt and Viola Hartmann of Minden, Jeanette and Emil Lampe of Waco, and Marj and Dan Heibel of Lincoln; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

The services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church of Seward with the Rev. James A. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Garland. Memorials may be directed to the Faith Lutheran Church of Seward or the donor's choice in care of the family. Wood-Zabka Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Inis Schrader

Inis Schrader, 81, of York, died Wednesday, May 3 at York. Funeral services are pending at Metz Mortuary at York.

Evelyn Martha Shoaf Samuelson

Evelyn Martha Shoaf Samuelson, 91, of York, died May 2, 2000 at York. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, May 5, at the First United Methodist Church at York with the Rev. Joel Rathbun officiating.

Donald M. Byrnes

Donald M. Byrnes, 88, of York, died Thursday, April 13, 2000 at York. Graveside memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 5 at Greenwood cemetery in York.

Edith Pettey Geene

Edith Pettey Geene, 67, formerly of York and Rancho Cordova, Calif. died Saturday, April 29, 2000 at Integrated Health Services in Central City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 5, 2000 at Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating.

Evelyn L. Bristol

York resident, 79

Evelyn L. Bristol, 79, of York died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in York.

She was born Sept. 21, 1923, at Waco to Henry and Caroline (Schlecte) Stuhr. She attended St. John Parochial School and graduated from Waco High School.

Evelyn married Rupert Bristol on April 1, 1945, at Waco. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in York. She was a longtime member of the Ladies Aid and LWML. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Aging Services, York Hospital Auxiliary and Emmanuel Lutheran School.

She is survived by one son, Michael (Mary Ann) Bristol of Thayer; three daughters, Mary (Ivan) Wellman of Waco, Susan (Leonard) Johnsen of Bruning and Judy (Mark) Schernikau of Oakland, Neb.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Caroline (Arlin) Hagerman of Albia, Iowa; brother, Reiny (Ella) Stuhr of Waco.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church in York. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran cemetery near Thayer. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Saturday at Metz Mortuary in York which is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Friesen

Henderson resident, 84

Raymond Friesen, 84, of Henderson died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at his home in Henderson.

He was born Sept. 11, 1916, near Henderson to Jacob F. and Lena (Kroeker) Friesen. He was married to Erma L. Wiens on April 28, 1940, at Henderson. They lived and farmed near Henderson until they retired in town. Raymond was an active community volunteer worker and was a member of the Mid-Town Manor Board and past Senior Citizens Board.

Survivors include two sons, Edward (Wyona) Friesen of Aurora and Kenneth (Peggy) Friesen of Henderson; two daughters, Carolyn (Allyn) Friesen of Hastings and Janet (Ed) Turner of Kingfisher, Okla. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his brother, Clarence (Phyllis) Friesen of Henderson.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife, Erma, who died in 1984.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday, at Metz Mortuary in Henderson. Memorials are suggested to the MCC Canner project.

Carlton Stanford

Fairmont resident, 21

Carlton M. Stanford, 21, of Fairmont died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in Lincoln.

He was born Jan. 20, 1980, in Liberal, Kan., to Ronald and Debbra (Flowers) Stanford.

Survivors include his mother, Debbra Flowers; sister, Kali Stanford; and brother, Tyler Stanford -- all of Fairmont.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 5, at Metz Mortuary Chapel in York. Due to cremation, there will be no visitation. Memorials may be sent in care of the family. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Jason Chrisman

Jason Chrisman, 26, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at Lincoln. He was the son of Gary Chrisman of Lincoln. Services are tentatively scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, May 6) at Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Erma Sweetman

Arizona resident, 86

Erma B. Sweetman, 86, of Sedona, Ariz., died May 5, 2001, in Lincoln.

She was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Hampton, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth Bamesberger.

She majored in home economics and received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1939. She taught home economics in Beatrice and Imperial and served as County Extension Specialist for Washington County prior to graduate study at Cornell University.

In 1945, she became an Extension Specialist in home furnishings at the University of Amherst in Massachusetts. In 1953, she entered private practice in Wichita, Kan., specializing in interior design for church, home and commercial buildings.

She was married to Harvey Sweetman in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1976. She accompanied her husband to Mindanao, in the Philippines, to oversee the beginning of a new university sponsored by the Ford Foundation. After completion of this assignment and world travel, they settled in Sedona, Ariz., where she designed and supervised construction of their retirement home.

She is survived by her sisters, Helen Ruff of Denver, Colo., Elsie Keeney of State College, Penn., and Lois Scheve of Lincoln, with whom she resided since mid-February; brother, Gordon Bamesberger of St. Louis, Mo.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 25 years, Harvey Sweetman; sisters, Lillian Jones of Atlanta, Ga., and Doris Bamesberger of Hampton; and a brother, Herbert Bamesberger of Twin Falls, Idaho.

A memorial service will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, with a reception for friends and family at the church following the service. Place of interment will be the family plot at the Hampton cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice or to the donor's choice. Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Jacob J. Epp

Jacob J. Epp, 84, of Henderson, died May 6, 2000 at his home in Henderson. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2000 at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson at 10 a.m.

Millie E. Nietenstein

Millie E. Nietenstein, 93, of Seward, died May 8, 2000. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home Chapel in Seward with the Rev. Alvin Smith officiating.

Irene Ruby Phillips

Irene Ruby Phillips, 98, of York, formerly of McCool Junction, died Monday, May 8, 2000 at York. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 12, 2000 at the McCool United Methodist Church.

Mildred Werner

Omaha resident, 89

Mildred Werner, 89, of Omaha, formerly of Humphrey, died Saturday, May 17, 2003. She died at the Montclair Nursing Center in Omaha.

Mildred was born on Dec. 7, 1913, in Humphrey to Simon P. and Sabina (Abler) Bender. She graduated from St. Francis High School in Humphrey. She married Martin J. Werner on Feb. 4, 1936, in Humphrey. She lived in Humphrey for a short time after marriage and then lived in Meadow Grove. She entered Montclair Nursing Center in 1996.

She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, St. Francis Christian Mothers and Humphrey Extension Club.

Survivors include 11 daughters, Betty (Ralph) Pfeifer of York, Mary (Melvin) Dohmen of South Sioux City, Cathy (Ralph) Capazo of Omaha, Pat (Rich) Backes of Broomfield, Colo., Peggy (Bob) Peterson of Omaha, Connie Golden of Omaha, Sue (Larry) Wackel of Crete, Rebecca (Dennis) Pick of Oakton, Va., Cindy (Rich) Renfro of Ida Grove, Iowa, Judy (Mike) Slattery of Lincoln; six sons, Bill (Karen) Werner of Humphrey, Richard (Maureen) Werner of Lincoln, Tom Werner of Lincoln, Jack (Kris) Werner of Sacramento, Calif., Bob (Donna) Werner of Columbus, Terry (Mary) Werner of Lincoln; 63 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; one sister, Germaine Liebig of Platte Center; and two brothers, LaVern Bender of Humphrey, David (Mary Ann) Bender of Humphrey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin, who died on April 26, 1991; one son, Joseph; son-in-law, David Golden; one sister, Eileen (Tom) Wemhoff; five brothers, Eugene, Mark, Walter, Melvin and Carroll.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey by Father James M. Buckley. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery in Humphrey.

Visitation will be at Dues Funeral Chapel in Humphrey on Tuesday from 3 to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 8:30 to 10 a.m. A Rosary will be recited by the Christian Mothers Tuesday at 3 p.m. with scripture and rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Wanda Hazen

York resident, 70

Wanda Bernice Hazen, 70, of York died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, in York.

She was born Nov. 27, 1932, in Hutchinson, Kan., to George H. and Wanda E. (Fallace) Suttle. Bernice was married to Billie Dean Hazen on Aug. 19, 1950, at Dighton, Kan. Billie died in 1982 and Bernice moved to Lakin, Kan., where she stayed until coming to York in November of 2000.

She is survived by her four children: Virgil and his wife Cathy Hazen of York, William and his wife Kathy Hazen of Ridgeway, Mo., Diana and her husband Cliff Maggard of Nampa, Ida., and Janelda and her husband Mike Lohrmeyer of Rutherford, N.C. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her brother George Suttle of Kent, Wash., and her sister Thelma Friend of Dighton, Kan.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and her brother Orville.

Visitation will be held on Sunday at Metz Mortuary from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Valley Memorial Chapel in Holly, Colo. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Holly cemetery. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin F. Wieseman

Stromsburg resident, 82

Melvin F. Wieseman, 82, of Stromsburg died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Stromsburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Anderson Kwankin and the Rev. John Dale officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Interment will be in the Osceola cemetery.

Joanie Elaine Burling

Joanie Elaine Burling, 51, of Aurora, died Monday, May 8, 2000 at her home. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 10, at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating.
