Shelley Jean Hansen

York resident, 48

Shelley Jean (Moore) Hansen, 48, of York died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at York after a five-year struggle with colon cancer.

She was the daughter of Wayne and Loryne (Jensen) Moore and was born in Superior on Dec. 25, 1953.

She received her grade school education in Superior and in 1968 moved with her family to Exeter where she graduated from high school.

On Sept. 18, 1971, she was united in marriage to Roger Hall. This union was blessed with three children, Jason, Heidi and Heather. The family lived in Exeter where she was employed part time in the office of Horizontal Boring and Tunneling Co., the family business.

In 1991, Shelley graduated with distinction from the Lincoln School of Commerce after which she was employed by Geneva Tour and Travel and the York Travel Agency.

On June 16, 1995, she married Merlyn Hansen at Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in York. She later joined this church and became a Stephens minister. Shelley taught Sunday School, belonged to an extension club and organized a team for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. She was active in the York General Hospital and Hearthstone Auxiliary and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She served as chairman of the decorating committee for the York Country Club's new facility and was a member of the board of directors.

Shelley is survived by her husband, Merlyn of York; parents, Wayne and Loryne Moore of Exeter; son Jason T. Hall of Lincoln; daughters Heidi Jo (Hall) Ricenbaw of York; Heather Yvonne (Hall) Kimble and husband Jeff of Papillion; stepdaughter, Carri (Hansen) Siedlik and husband Jeff and step-granddaughter Ella of Omaha; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patrice and John Lovegrove of Fairmont, and Vicki and Bob Lovegrove of Grafton; brother and sister-in-law, Brent and Lori Moore of Exeter; nieces and nephews, Justin Lovegrove, Lisa (Lovegrove) Finkner; Brandon, Ashley, and Bobbi Lovegrove; and Kenton, Lindsey, and Kelsey Moore; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Art Brinkmeyer. Burial will be in the Exeter cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Metz Chapel in York. The family requests that donations in Shelley's memory be sent to the York General Hospital or Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.* * *

Rita R. Kidder

Wisconsin resident, 39

Rita R. (Ripp) Kidder, 39, of Plymouth, Wis., died May 18, 2002, in Plymouth.

She was born on Aug. 22, 1962, in Grand Island, the daughter of Marvin and Sena Katherine (Kjar) Ripp. She graduated from Grand Island Central Catholic High School in 1981. She also attended Metro Tech in Omaha, studying commerical art, and the University of Nebraska in Omaha studying special education.

She was married to Jay C. Kidder in Omaha on Aug. 15, 1987. The couple lived in Omaha for eight years before moving to Plymouth in 1995. She was a member of Plymouth Alliance Church and was involved in women's ministries in the church.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Zachary; daughters, Mallorie, Karissa, and Brianna; her mother, Sena Katherine Ripp of Grand Island; sisters, Jerrine M. (George) Brugh of York and Glenna Ritchie of Axtell; and six nieces. She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society. Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth, Wis., was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy J. Maden

Arizona resident, 78

Dorothy J. Maden, 78, of Sun City, Ariz., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Peoria, Ariz.

She was born May 10, 1923, in York County to Ora and Jean (Kelly) Saddoris.

Dorothy graduated from York High School and then graduated from York College in 1943. On Oct. 5, 1946, she was married to Bill Maden in York.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Greenwood cemetery in York with the Rev. Ralph Ford officiating. No visitation. Cremation. Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur W. Ahlquist

Arthur W. Ahlquist, 96, of Stromsburg, died Monday, May 29, 2000 at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 2, at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church with Pastor Bob Johnson officiating.

Mary M. Stuertz

Mary M. Stuertz, 85, of York, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000 at York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary at York.

Rebecca Lee Tracy

Rebecca Lee Tracy, 17, of Hebron, died May 24, 2000. A prayer service was held on Saturday, May 27, at First Christian Church in Hebron. Funeral services were held Sunday, May 28, at First Christian Church with Minister John R. Walton officiating.

Gertrude Allen

York resident, 88

Gertrude Allen, 88, of York, formerly of Norfolk, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at York General Hospital.

She was born on Feb. 12, 1915, at Clearwater, daughter of Phillip and Josephine (Bauer) Scheer. She was raised in the Clearwater and Royal areas.

On July 18, 1932, Gertrude married Verle W. Allen. They made their home in Royal until 1946 when they moved to Pickstown, S.D. In 1955 they moved to Pierre, S.D., and in 1963 they moved to Lake Andes, S.D., where they owned and operated the Sands Motel for 12 years before retiring to Norfolk in 1975.

Gertrude was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. She was a member of the Beulah Chapter #40 Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her children, Carrol and Gladys Allen of Lake Andes, S.D., DeEtta and Felix Vondracek of York, Judene and Jerry Grage of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Victoria Allen of Napa, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 and four sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk with the Rev. Dr. William G. Nottage-Tacey and the Rev. Matthew Froeschle officiating. Burial will be in the Clearwater City cemetery in Clearwater. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Home for Funerals in Norfolk.

Harold Klingman

Alda resident, 81

Harold E. Klingman, 81, of rural Alda, Neb., died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born Feb. 19, 1920, at Chester, Neb., the son of William C. and Mabel (Eickman) Klingman. In 1920, his family moved to a farm outside of Chappell, Neb.

He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and graduated in 1943 with a B.S. in vocational education. He taught vocational agriculture at Allen, Neb., for one year. In the fall of 1944, he went to work for the Soil Conservation Service. He worked for 2 1/2 years in Boyd County.

On June 22, 1946, he married Lois M. Jacobsen at Newman Grove, Neb. In 1947, he became the District Conservationist for Polk County where he worked until moving to Hall County in the fall of 1964. He retired in 1976, after 32 years of service.

His wife, Lois, died Nov. 30, 1990.

After retirement, he founded Klingman Irrigation Services with his son, Bradley. On Dec. 7, 1991, he married Della Hoffman in Grand Island.

He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council. He was active in the local Lions Club and served as president in 1980. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Harold is survived by his wife, Della, of Alda; one son, Bradley (Jill) Klingman of Grand Island; two daughters, Barbara Klingman of Wichita, Kan., Bette (Renato) Cataldo of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren; one stepson, Bill Hoffman of York; two stepdaughters, Susan Sundberg of Polk and Connie Herd of San Antonio, Texas; seven step-grandchildren; three brothers, Dayton, Allen, and Vern; two sisters, Claramae Eshelman and Laura Eshelman.

Preceding him in death was one sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grand Island with Pastor Joel Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Kleine Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran cemetery #1, Newman Grove, at 3 p.m., Saturday. Pastor Neal Von Seggern will officiate. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the University of Nebraska Foundation. Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gayle L. Johnson

York resident, 72

Gayle L. Johnson, 72, of York, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in York.

He was born March 22, 1929, at Bruning, to Frederick and Esther (Robohm) Johnson. He was a 1947 graduate of Bruning High School and graduated from Lincoln School of Commerce with a degree in accounting.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy.

Gayle married Arlene (June) Austin on March 30, 1952, in Jansen. He owned the operated B Gay Liquor in York for 25 years before retiring. He worked at L. J. Messer Auto Parts in Fairbury from 1955-67 and also owned and operated the Tower Lanes Bowling Alley in Albia, Iowa, from 1967-70. Gayle was a member of the York American Legion Bolton Post, was past commander of the VFW in York and the York Elks Lodge.

He is survived by three sons, Dennis (Roxane) Johnson of York, Rick Johnson of Grafton, and Terry (Fran) Johnson of Lincoln; one daughter, Shari (Rex) Reynolds of Utica; and seven grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant son and an infant granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, at Trinity Lutheran cemetery at Bruning. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Metz Mortuary in York, which is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials should be made in care of the family.

Dora Bulgrin

Utica resident, 88

Dora Steffens Bulgrin, 88, died May 27, 2003, at Baton Rouge, La. She was born at Utica on Sept. 24, 1914, to Carl A. and Estella (Maeder) Steffens.

She attended Utica Public Schools, graduating from Utica High School with the class of 1931. She was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Utica by Pastor Paul Hafemeister.

Besides living in Utica she resided in several other Nebraska cities, including York and Lincoln, before moving to Baton Rouge to be close to her daughter and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands: Louis Dinkelman, Bill Klemsz, and Randell Bulgrin, and her brother, Gordon Steffens.

Survivors include her daughter and husband, Deanna and Dick Miller of Ethel, La.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mildred Steffens of Seward; three nieces; a stepdaughter, Wilma Powell of Ohio; and a stepson, Loyd Klemsz of Arkansas, and many church friends of Baton Rouge.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 29, 2003, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Baton Rouge with burial at Baton Rouge.

William P. "Paul" Leif Sr.

Beaver Crossing resident, 83

William Paul Leif Sr., 83, of Beaver Crossing died at Memorial Hospital in Seward May 31, 2003.

He was born April 20, 1920, at Utica to William and Mary (Werthem) Leif. He graduated from Beaver Crossing High School. He worked at Samuelson Brothers grocery until 1940 when he went to Kansas City and trained at the Aeronautical School. He was employed at Wright Aeronautical in Paterson, N.J. He married Elizabeth "Bessie" Facas on Dec. 19, 1941. He was employed by Hindu Aircraft in India until service in the Navy during WWII.

In 1947 Paul and Bessie came to Beaver Crossing. They operated a grocery business until 1975. Paul was a member and former trustee of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of the Beaver Crossing Volunteer Fire Department and served as fire chief many years. He served on the school board, the village board, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the American Legion Holmes Post #178, 40&8 Voiture #103 of Lincoln, and served for nine years on the ManTex Board at Weslaco, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Bessie" Leif; sons, William Paul (Cheryl) Leif Jr., Gerard "Jere" (Janet) Leif, all of Beaver Crossing, Robert Thomas (Elizabeth J.) Leif of Denver, Donald James (Michele) Leif of Knoxville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; sister, LeNora Coffey of Exeter; brother, Clarence (Mildred) Leif of Lincoln; many nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, an infant grandson Joel; brother Mathias Leif; three sisters, Dorothy Dumpert, Louise Neville, Margaret Becker.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on June 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing with Father Maurice Current officiating. Interment is in Calvary cemetery with military services by Holmes Post #178. A Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Sacred Heart Church. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Beaver Crossing, and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials can be directed in care of the family. Lauber-Moore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
