David W. Hassler

Waco resident, 47

David W. Hassler, 47, of Waco died on Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Bryan LGH West Hospital in Lincoln as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident June 11, 2002.

Dave was born on March 18, 1955, in Lincoln to LeRoy and Doris (Felton) Hassler. His father was in the military so they lived in several places throughout the country as Dave grew up. Dave served in the U.S. Navy. He married Debra Woodring on July 16, 1975, in Minden. Dave worked for Weedlun Chevrolet and Lampshire Chevrolet and later owned and operated Dave's Tools from 1978 until 1995. He moved to Waco and was working for Kroy Building Industries.

Survivors include two daughters, Sonia (Ron) Zimmerman of Kearney and Kendra Hassler of Minden; two sons, Brandon Hassler and Brent Hassler, both of Minden; one grandson; parents, LeRoy and Doris Hassler of Sutton; former wife, Debra Hassler of Minden; one brother, Butch (Suzy) Hassler of Sutton; and one sister, Linda Hassler of Scottsbluff. He is preceded in death by his grandparents.

Memorial services will be on Friday, June 21, at 2 p.m. at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Hunzeker officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be at the Minden cemetery with Military Rites provided by Minden American Legion Post #94. There is no visitation. Layton Funeral Home in Minden is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon R. Williams

Broken Bow resident, 94

Vernon R. Williams, 94, of Broken Bow died Sunday, June 16, 2002, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

He was born June 27, 1907, on a farm northeast of Arcadia to Rutherford and Minnie (Hamilton) Williams. He was educated at rural District 69. On Nov. 30, 1928, he was married to Sophia Brown at Gandy, Neb. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia of Broken Bow; one daughter, Patricia Dahlin of Stromsburg; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eva Ward of Fredericksburg, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, R. B. and Minnie (Hamilton) Williams; three brothers; three sisters; one grandson; and a son-in-law.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, June 19, at 2 p.m. at the Swede Plain cemetery northeast of Polk. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the family receiving friends from 7-8 p.m. A memorial has been established to Custer County Hospice.

Anna Rose Kotas

Milligan resident, 99

Anna Rose Kotas, 99, of Milligan, the widow of John H. Kotas, died Monday, June 17, 2002, in Friend.

She was born on April 6, 1903, at Tobias to Vaclav and Marie (Bernasek) Koca.

Survivors include her son, Joe (Grace) Kotas of Milligan; daughter, Rose Marie Hulse of Exeter; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milligan. The Rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at Farmer and Son Funeral Home, Kotas Chapel, Milligan. Visitation will begin Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Kotas Chapel. Graveside services will be in the Milligan North cemetery with Father David F. Bourek officiating.

Viva Lindquist

Seward resident, 82

Viva A. Lindquist, 82, of Seward, formerly of Central City, died June 18, 2001.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1919, to Charles and Myrtle (Frank) Luce. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City.

She enjoyed crocheting and sewing, bingo and playing the organ. She also enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandson.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers, one sister and one grandson.

Survivors include her husband, Morris Lindquist of Seward; son, Eldon (Nancy) Lindquist of Seward; daughters, Karen (Shorty) Foulk of York, Lyla (Bill) Spencer of Osceola; grandchildren, Janis, Steve, Greg, Lynelle, Loren, Lance, Deron, and Jeff; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Tonya, Tasha, Keysha, Matt, Jennifer, Chelsay, Andrea, Brett, Brandon, Ben, Krystina, Tiffany, Lyndsey, Desiree, and Landon; great-great-grandson, Ethan; brothers, Elvin (Thelma) Luce of Sioux Falls, S.D., Glenn (Edna) Luce of Kearney; sister, Edith Dombrose of Placerville, Calif.; sister-in-law, Roberta DeWoody of San Diego, Calif.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There will be visitation also one hour prior to the service. The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 22, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward with the Rev. Kelly Karges officiating. Burial will be in Hordville cemetery in Hordville. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice in care of the family.

Stanley Diehl

York resident, 91

Stanley L. Diehl, 91, of York died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at York.

He was born May 25, 1910, at Thayer to Arlo and Iva (Price) Diehl. He was a 1927 graduate of York High School.

On Feb. 22, 1934, he was married to Dorothy Lloyd at her rural York family home. Stanley was a longtime farmer in the York area and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of York where he served as an elder and a deacon. He also had been a York County Commissioner, 4-H leader and member of the York County Feeders Association, York Masonic Lodge #57 A.F. & A.M., Sesostris Shrine, Elks Lodge #1024 and the Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of York; two daughters, Norma (Max) Smith of York and Barbara (Karl) Greiter of Aurora, Ill.; grandchildren, Rondalyn (Robert) Mitchell of Lincoln, Boyd (Lori) Smith of York, Rita (Marlin) Lyon of Lincoln, Karl (Sara) Greiter of Bartlett, Ill., Jacqueline Robinson of Aurora, Ill., Mark (Annie) Greiter of Marion, Iowa, and Robert (Lori) Grieter of Aurora, Ill. Also surviving are 14 great-grandchildren and his twin brother, Stanford (Berniece) Diehl of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; a nephew, Tom (Ida) Diehl of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a niece, Diana (Dean) Nielsen of Norfolk.

Preceding him in death were his parents, brother, infant sister and infant great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in York with the Rev. Dick Woolard. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at York. Memorials are suggested to the church. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Tuesday, at Metz Mortuary of York which is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Bailey

York resident, 72

Gerald E. Bailey, 72, of York died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Lincoln.

He was born March 26, 1929, in York to Claude and Evelyn (Young) Bailey. He graduated from York High School and served in the U.S. Army and the Air Force. He graduated from the University of Nebraska and received his Master's in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma, after which he wrote and published several books. He was a member of the McCool United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his brother, Tom (Pat) Bailey of McCool Junction, five nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gene.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 21, at Metz Chapel in York. Burial will be in the Holoch cemetery east of McCool Junction. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Tuesday, at Metz Mortuary in York, which is in charge of arrangements.

Bryan Ratzlaff

Henderson resident, 51

Bryan C. Ratzlaff, 51, of Henderson, formerly of Sutton, died early on Tuesday morning, June 19, 2001 at his home in Henderson.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete as of press-time. A complete obituary notice will appear in a future edition. Lewis Funeral Chapel of Henderson is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Eichman

York resident, 70

Raymond L. Eichman, 70, of York, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, in Lincoln.

He was born on June 19, 1933 in Trego County, Kan. to John Frederick and Bertha (Bender) Eichman. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1957 and was married to Adell Hillmer on June 15, 1958 in York. Until his retirement, Raymond was the owner/operator of Raydell Construction Co., Rural Lumber and Supply and Wood Perfections. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in York and a past member of the Nebraska Home Builders Association.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, woodworking, windmills, raising peacocks and his special pet "Bernie the Buffalo."

Survivors include his wife, Adell of York; daughters Kristi (Thomas) Weber, Hampton, Raylene (Randy) Lawson, Aurora, Lori (Terry) Tobin, York; grandchildren, Amanda and Christa Weber, Jacob Lawson, Dustin, Cody and Caleb Tobin; and special friend Crystal Hood; brothers, Paul (Norma) Eichman of Quinter, Kan., Herman (Verna) Eichman of Waverly Hall, Ga., Thelmer Eichman of Woodland Hills, Calif; sisters, Leah Meyers of Denver, Colo., Elsa Kerksiek of Strasburg, Colo., Elma Helwig, Greensburg, Kan., Bertha Yanda, Quinter, Kan., Martha Stegman, Ransom, Kan. and Frieda Colberg, Ellis, Kan. Also surviving are a nephew, Norman (JoNell) Snodgrass of McCool and a brother-in-law, Cliff Stramel of Oakley, Kan.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sisters, Rosa Snodgrass, Clara Halbeib, Wanda Stramel and an infant brother, Wilhelm "Billy" Eichman.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in York with Rev. Art Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at York. Visitation begins Thursday at 5 p.m. The family will greet friends and neighbors from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday at Metz Mortuary in York.

Darlene Messman

Hebron resident, 73

Darlene Katrina Messman, died Sept. 30, 2003, in Hebron at the age of 73.

She was born the second of twin daughters to Christof and Amelia (Eppler) Johnson on Oct. 10, 1929, on a farm near Bruning.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and joined the United Methodist Church after her marriage. She was an active member of the her church, serving many years as Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher, Bible study leader, UMW, Youth Group sponsor, choir member and Communion steward. She retired as the bookkeeper/secretary of the Bruning Public Schools after 19 years of service. She was also a member of the Durham-Mammen Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Bruning Federated Women's Club.

On Oct. 16, 1948, she was married to Darrell D. Messman in Bruning. To this union, four children were born. Other than a short stay in Falls City, they spent their married life in Bruning. With the family, they celebrated 40 years of marriage in 1988. She resided in Hebron for several years until health problems prompted her to enter the Community Care Center in Utica. While there, she led Bible studies and served on the Resident Council. She returned to live near her home on Sept. 29.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Jarod S. Priefert; twin sister, Arlene in early childhood; sister, Dorothy Raines; brother Ronald Johnson; sister-in-law June Johnson; brothers-in-law Fieldon Hawks and Leland DuBois.

She is survived by daughters, Rebecca (Don) Sandman of Utica, Kathryn Priefert of Hebron, Mary (Tim) Otto of Bellevue; son Darrell Jr. (Pauline) Messman of Beatrice; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Leona Hawks, Verienne (Rev. Robert) Hulse; brothers, Vernon (Lola) Johnson, Gaylord (Dolores) Johnson; brother-in-law Paul (Maxine) Raines; sister-in-law Louise DuBois; numerous nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 a.m., at the Bruning United Methodist Church. Pastor Lila Bottolfsen will officiate. Burial will be at the Bruning Public cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family for designation at a later date.

Arrangements were made by the Hebron Memorial Funeral Home.

Jerome C. Geiger

Exeter resident, 53

Jerome C. Geiger of Exeter, 53, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, in Lincoln.

He was born the son of Raymond and Magdalene (Hassler) Geiger, on Feb. 7, 1950.

Survivors include his sons, David (Rochelle) Geiger of York and Dennis Geiger of Omaha; his mother, Magdalene Geiger of Exeter; brother, James R. (Carolyn) Geiger of Omaha; sister, Judy Geiger of Omaha; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Farmer Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at the Exeter cemetery in Exeter. Father Kenneth Borowiak will officiate.

Carrol Fraass

Marquette resident, 53

Carrol Fraass, 53, of Marquette died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha.

He was born in Sidney on Aug. 19, 1948, to Dave and Marilyn (Dress) Fraass. He grew up in Sidney and graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1964. Carrol served in the U.S. Army shortly after graduation.

He was married to Ruth Prochnow on Nov. 22, 1970, at St. John's Church in Seward. The couple made their home in Marquette. One son was born to this union, Dustin Lee Fraass, on Sept. 27, 1982. Carrol worked for many years in the Grand Island area in the mechanical field. At the time of his death, he was employed by Great Plains Material and Handling in Grand Island.

Carrol is survived by his wife, Ruth Fraass of Marquette; son, Dustin Fraass of Marquette; parents, Dave and Marilyn Fraass of Crook, Colo.; twin sister, Cheryl (Myron) Davidson of Wheatridge, Colo.; three brothers, Rich Fraass of Crook, Colo., Scott (Bonnie) Fraass of Crook, Colo., and Daryl (Annie) Fraass of North Platte; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Interment will be in Richland cemetery near Marquette. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora.
