Mary F. Tous

Fairmont resident, 74

Mary F. Tous, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003 in Fairmont.

She was born Feb. 11, 1929 in Omaha to Charles and Venda (Putlitz) Tous. Mary was a member of PEO, Fairmont Community Church, Lifetime member of Professional Secretaries Association and Nebraska State Historical Society, University of Nebraska Alumni Association. She retired as Investor Relations Manager for Lincoln Telephone & Telegraph Company and was a former employee of Bankers Life of Nebraska, First Mid America and National Bank of Commerce. She obtained her BA and Masters Degree in Business from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Survivors include her cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont. Graveside services will be held at Geneva Public cemetery in Geneva. Rev. Betsy Callaway-Carew will officiate. Memorials are suggested to Fairmont Community Church, Fairmont Senior Center, Fairmont Legion, Library or Museum.

Thomas E. Bors

Former McCool resident, 57

Thomas E. Bors, 57, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003.

He was born Dec. 31, 1946 to Joseph and Jean (Williams) Bors of McCool Junction. He graduated from McCool Junction High School in 1964, and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1968. he married Janet Wilson in Corpus Christi, Texas on Oct. 1, 1982.

Survivors include his wife Janet; his mother, Jean Bors of McCool Junction; brother James (Marilyn) of Belgium, Wis.; and two sisters, Ellen Stuart (Harold), and Mary Anne (William) Fitzpatrick, both of McCool Junction.

Services are pending.

Vera M. Bankson

Hordville resident, 68

Vera M. Bankson, 68, of Hordville, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Vera was born Dec. 9, 1935 on a farm near Beaver Crossing, to Lloyd and Esther (Barnes) Knerr. She grew up on a farm near York and received her education at the York Public School. She graduated from York High School in 1953.

She was united in marriage to Dean Bankson on March 9, 1958 at the Methodist Church in York. The couple lived in York for a short time and then moved to a farm near Hordville. Vera worked for the telephone company in York, and also at Bethesda Health Care in Central City until her Multiple Sclerosis forced her to take early retirement.

Vera enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, sewing, crafts, gardening, especially her flowers, and being with her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed visiting with community members while being the Hordville newspaper correspondent.

Mrs. Bankson was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Merry Mothers Extension Club, and was a former member of Fridhem Lutheran Church and W.E.L.C.A. Vera was also very active as a 4-H leader for 35 years.

She is survived by her husband, Dean; three sons, Larry and Sally Bankson of Hordville, Brian and Nadine Bankson of Hampton, and Steve Bankson of Hordville; two daughters, Cindy and Robert Williams of McLouth, Kan.; and Cheri and Dave Brostowicz of Smyrna, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Central City with the Sister Mary Arie officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 13, from 5-7 p.m. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Hordville cemetery.

Joan (Fleming) Kelly

Omaha resident, 67

Joan (Fleming) Kelly, 67, of Omaha, the daughter of Henry J. Fleming and Thelma (Barrett) Fleming of York, died Dec. 3, 2003.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Fleming; sister, Charlotte Fleming; and husband, Frank Kelly.

She is survived by her mother, Thelma Fleming; brother, Dr. Michael Fleming of Omaha; sister-in-law, Terrie (Carty) Fleming; sister, Dianne (Fleming) Milburn of Capitola, Calif.; and brother-in-law, Hal Milburn; nephews, Joseph, John and Jeff Milburn, Barry and Brian Fleming; nieces, Heather Traynor and Robin Ziepke; four great-nephews; two great-nieces; numerous friends across the country.

She was a graduate of York High School in 1954. She earned a degree in journalism at University of Nebraska and a Masters degree at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. She taught school in Colorado. She moved to San Francisco and then moved to Long Island, N.Y. While at San Francisco she was involved in marketing research and management. Joan was the first woman to be elected president of the American Marketing Association. She is also listed in Who's Who of American Women. In recent years, she worked for Mutual of Omaha in Omaha. She recently retired due to illness, as she battled against cancer for five years.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m., at the J. O. Gentleman Pacific Street Chapel, 1415 Pacific Street, Omaha.

There will be a private interment.

Anita M. Cox

Hordville resident, 81

Anita Maxine Cox, 81, of Hordville, died Aug. 17, 2003. She was born in Hamilton County, on September 9, 1921, to Robert and Fern (Boettner) Lindahl.

She lived her life the Clarks, Polk and Hordville areas and received her education at Hamilton County country school and graduated from Clarks High School in 1939. Anita received her Registered Nurses Diploma from St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island in 1941. In 1942, she enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a nurse. She was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1943. For 40 years, Anita practiced nursing in Central City and Osceola, where she was Director of Nursing for ten years and during eight of these years she also operated the Snack Shack in Polk. She retired in 1982 from Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Anita M. Lindahl and Henry Kisler were married for 24 years until his death in 1973. In 1982, she was married to Howard R. Cox.

Anita was a member of the American Legion Post 160 in Polk. She was very active in the Legion Auxiliary, had been a 4-H Leader and active in the PTO during her children's school years, was on the Polk and Hordville Rescue Squads for many years, a member of the Hordville Lions Club, enjoyed sewing, and her greatest love was for her husband and family.

She is survived by her husband, Howard of Hordville; her children, All and Sally Kisler of St. Louis, MO; Robert Kisler of Lincoln; Linda Kisler of Omaha; Nancy and Jerry Gondringer of Lincoln; and Julia and Russ Kortum of Clarks; her step-son Bernie and Jan Cox of Central City; her sisters, Doris and Hollis Stromberg of Clarks; and Shirley Barnes of Reno, Nev.; and grandchildren, Jill and Jeff Hartman; Chad and Kendra Gondringer; Brett Gondringer; Angela and Scott Klute; April and Bobby Kelley; Melanie Cox; Lisa Cox and Frankie Nichols; and Bill Cox; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry Kisler; and great-grandson Logan Klute in 1998.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 21 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital Foundation.

Wayne C. Kinnan

Stromsburg resident, 94

Wayne C. Kinnan, 84, of Stromsburg, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m., at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg. Rev. Keith Brozek will officiate. Burial will be at the Shelby cemetery in Shelby. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m., at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Inez Holthe

South Dakota resident, 87

Inez Holthe, 87, of Alcester, S.D., died April 26, 2003, at the Morningside Care Center in Alcester.

She was born Nov. 20, 1915, in rural Union County near Spink, S.D., to parents Edwin and Alphild (Hjemdahl) Anderson.

Inez attended the North Spink rural school. She married Jorris Holthe April 14, 1934. The couple farmed and lived in the Roseni area until their retirement in 1974 when they moved into Alcester. Jorris died June 21, 1979. Inez worked in the kitchen at the Alcester-Hudson school until she retired in May of 2002 and resided in Alcester until the present time.

Inez was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a lifelong member of Roseni Lutheran Church in rural Beresford where she was active in the Ladies Aid. She also enjoyed baking, quilting, playing cards and bingo, and spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jorris and son Kenneth.

Among those who survive are two sons: Craig (Sandy) Holthe of York, Curtis (JoLee) Holthe of Alcester; daughter, Kathy Waddell of Alcester; grandchildren: Matt and Becky Holthe of York, Chad Holthe of Sioux City, Iowa, Jennifer Holthe of Tea, S.D., Ginger Wells of Canistota, S.D., Connie Schelske of Brookings, S.D., and Kristy Weldon, Debbie Braun and Renee McKinnon, all of St. Louis, Mo.; seven great-grandchildren: Collin, Tyler, Ashley, Lauren, Robert, Amanda, and Kacy; five sisters; Wilma Strand of Watsonville, Calif., Ada Kjose of Elk Point, S.D., Violet (Leonard) Swanson of Akron, Iowa, Fern Svatos of Omaha, and Esther (Leo) Girard of Vermillion; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services are being held today (Tuesday) at 10 a.m. at Roseni Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, S.D., with burial in the church cemetery, under the direction of Wass Funeral Home of Alcester, S.D.

Leila (Emken) Kailey

Colorado resident, 67

Leila (Emken) Kailey, 67, of Lakewood, Colo., died Jan. 8, 2004.

She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Vivian (Bryant) Emken and was born Jan. 24, 1936, in Polk. She was raised in Nebraska and moved to Antigo, Wis., and later Colorado.

She married Milo Sylfest and later William Kailey.

Survivors include two sons, Mike (Sandy) Sylfest of Appleton, Wis., and Bruce (Tammy Whitt) Sylfest of Antigo, Wis.; a sister, Doris (Bob) Heineke in Nebraska; brothers, Duane (Patsy) Emken of Louisiana, Leland (Rose) Emken of Wyoming, and Harry (Donna) Emken of Florida; two grandsons; one step-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at 1:30 p.m., at the Bradley Funeral Home in Antigo, Wis. Rev. Lane Lavender will officiate. Visitation will be on Sunday, Jan. 25, from 4-7 p.m., and on Monday, from noon until 1:30 p.m., at the Bradley Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Queen of Peace cemetery in Antigo.

Carryl "Ugly" Ruhl

Schuyler resident, 68

Carryl "Ugly" Ruhl, 68, of Schuyler, died Jan. 19, 2004 at the Fremont Medical Center.

He was born March 14, 1935, in Exeter, the son of Thaddeus Ruhl and Mildred Rakestraw. He attended grade school at Pleasant Prairie #27 at Stromsburg, graduated from St. Joseph's High School in York in 1952, he received his degree in accounting from the Aurrsmald's Accounting and Secretary School in Seattle, Wash.

He was the owner/operator of Ugly's Junkin salvage yard in rural Schuyler.

He lived in Nebraska, Washington, California and Texas, and served the Army during the Korean War (1954-1957).

He was a member of the Schuyler VFW and the Schuyler Eagles Club.

Survivors include his twin brother, Darryl (Elizabeth) Ruhl of Ralston; brothers, Floyd (Belle) Ruhl of California, Norman (Vivian) Ruhl of Nevada; sister, Erma (Mrs. Roland) Dickey of Arizona; special nephews Tom Ruhl and Thad Ruhl; and 14 other nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 23, at Svoboda Funeral Home South Chapel in Schuyler. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. until noon at the South Chapel. Interment will be at 2 p.m., Friday, at St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery in York.

Anthony J. "Tony" Litty Sr.

Seward resident, 89

Anthony J. "Tony" Litty Sr., 89, of Seward, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004.

He was born Dec. 7, 1914. He was a retired employee of Hughes Brothers Manufacturing, Union, and Hughes Brothers Credit Union.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; sons, daughters-in-law, Anthony J., Jr., and Marlene of Lincoln, Stanley J. and Bonnie of Seward; grandchildren, Kristie Todd, Gregg Litty, Lisa Williams, Michele Franzen; step-grandchildren, Amy Prochaska, Todd Roth, Darin Roth; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; sisters, brother-in-law, Louise Thorne, York, Lillian and Clayton Verlo, Tomah, Wis. P

He was preceded in death by parents, John and Anna; brothers, Leslie and Leonard; daughter, Linda Lu Litty, grandson, Scott.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Wood-Zabka Funeral Home, Seward. The Rev. John D. Kovac will officiate. Interment will be at the Seward cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Great Plains Chapter, or the family.

Leo Gotcher

Benedict resident, 57

Leo John Gotcher, age 57 of Benedict, died Friday, November 14, 2003 at his home in Benedict. He was born January 17, 1946 in York to Leo Dean and Mabel R. (Tracy) Gotcher. He attended school and graduated from the Bradshaw High School. John had worked as a lineman for the Knox Construction Co. and moved to Benedict in 1986. He is survived by his daughter Traci and her husband Tim Clouse of Gresham, stepson David Carroll of Gresham and 5 grandchildren; Johnathan, Paul, Jeremy and Michael Clouse and Dylan Carroll. Also surviving are his brother Dean (Karen) Gotcher of Tulsa, OK and 3 sisters; Darlene Gotcher of Lincoln, Rowena (Alvin) Storesund of Panora, IA and Mary (Donald) Richard of Lincoln, MO. He was precdeded in death by his parents.

John was cremated and his memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at the Metz Chapel in York with Phil Towle officiating. No visitation. Inurnment will be in the Council cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.
