Irene I. Fictum

Fairmont resident, 85

Irene I. Fictum, 85, of Fairmont and formerly of Wilber, died Feb. 23, 2004.

She was born Oct. 26, 1918. She grew up on a farm southwest of Wilber, attended District 93 and graduated from Wilber High School in 1936. She taught rural schools, married Ernest E. Fictum on May 27, 1942, in Lincoln. They lived in Lincoln and later moved to a farm west of Wilber and then to a farm south of Wilber where they owned and operated a gravel business for many years. In 1988, she moved into Wilber to make her home.

Survivors include her daughters, Sandra F. and husband Jim Hubka of Lincoln, Ricki A. and husband, Vince Valentino of York; sisters, Lillian and husband, Donald Rezabek of Dorchester, and Norma Timm of Crete; grandchildren, Rena M. Valentino, Tara A. Valentino, Joe E. Hubka and Molly M. Hubka.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Agnes T. (Kohel) Vicek; husband, Ernest E. Fictum; sister and brother-in-law, Adeline and Ervin Brozovsky; brother-in-law, Floyd Timm.

There will be a private family committal of cremation remains at the Wilber Czech cemetery.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m., at the Zajicek Funeral Home in Wilber. The speaker will be Vince Valentino.

The signing of the register book will be Wednesday and Thursday from 1-4 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Zajicek Funeral Home in Wilber is in charge of arrangements.

Chris Rickertsen

Lexington resident, 86

Chris A. Rickertsen, 86, of Lexington, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

He was born Sept. 19, 1915, the son of Adolf Daniel and Henny (Seeheusen) Rickertsen in Lexington. He was a 1932 graduate of Lexington High.

On Dec. 21, 1943, he married Bertha Stevens at Gothenburg. He was a lifelong resident of Lexington, where he farmed and raised cattle. He established the Car-Bar Cattle Company in 1972. He was a captain in the 987 Field Artillery Unit in World War II.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, past president of Farm Bureau and Lexington Co-op Oil, was a 4-H leader and served as a school board member for District 25.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of Lexington; two sons, Bryan (Marleen) Rickertsen of Lincoln and Bruce (Julie) Rickertsen of Lexington; two daughters, Linda (David) Hirschfeld of Waco and Carma (Galen) Ewer of Salt Lake City, Utah; three brothers; four sisters; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.

Services will be held Saturday, March 9, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington. Visitation will be Friday, March 8, from 4-7 p.m., at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington. Interment will be at the Mt. Hope cemetery near Lexington.

Arnold I. Bartels

Randolph resident, 92

Arnold Ivan Bartels, 92 of Randolph, Neb., died June 1, 2004 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Randolph.

He was born at Hubbard, Neb., June 26, 1911 to William and Mamie Ream Bartels and graduated from Homer High School in 1932. After graduating from high school, he farmed with his father and brother.

He married Barbara Goodsell Jan. 15, 1934 in Jefferson, S.D., and they lived near Hubbard until 1953 when they purchased a farm near Belden. The family also ran Bobbie's Cafe in Belden from 1960 to 1975. In 1976 they retired from farming and moved to Laurel where they operated the Corner Cafe. In 1990 they moved to South Sioux City, Neb. and lived there until his wife died Sept. 15, 1991, after 57 years of marriage. Arnold entered Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Randolph in March 1996.

He was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Belden.

Surviving are three sons, Arnold L. (Rita) Bartels of Ogallala, William (Margaret) Bartels if Yankton, S.D. and Craig (Luann) Bartels of Belden; three daughters, Aylene Scott of Moville, Iowa, Barbara (Fran) Crowe of York and Jill (Warren) Huetig of Ogallala; 17 grandchildren; 21 grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; 4 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Preceded by wife, Bobbie; two brothers, one sister, one son-in-law, Cal Scott.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 7, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Union Presbyterian Church in Belden with the Rev. Duane L. Rhoadarmer officiating. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home in Randolph. Music will be by pianist/soloist, Barbara Crowe. Pallbearers are grandsons, Randy Bartels, Shane Crowe, Dana Bring, Brandson Huetig, Blake Bartels, A1C Marcus Bartels and A1C Lukas Bartels.

Johnson Funeral Homes of Randolph, Neb., are in charge of arrangements.

Ilene L. Samuelson

Stromsburg resident, 69

Ilene L. Samuelson, 69 years old of Stromsburg died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at the York General Hospital in York.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 5 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg. Pastor Bob Johnson will officiate. Burial will be at Swede Home Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Samuelson was born December 16, 1934 near Davenport, Nebraska to Merle and Emma (McCalister) Johnson. The family moved to West Concord, Minnesota, where she attended school. Then they moved to Sutton, Nebraska where she graduated from High School in 1953. She then moved to Tacoma, Washington. Then she moved to York, Nebraska where she made her home with Raymond and Verna Johnson.

On September 4, 1965 she married Wallace Samuelson in York.

Mrs. Samuelson worked as a nurses aide in the York Hospital in York and at Anne Jeffery Hospital in Osceola. She also worked in the activities department at Midwest Covenant Home where she instructed ceramics for several years.

She enjoyed baking cookies, ceramics and collecting cook books.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace of Stromsburg, a twin sister, Irene (James) Norton of Tacoma, Washington, a step brother, Wallace Everett of California, nieces and nephews and special friends, Herb and Susan Hanson and family.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jo Floren.

Linnea Krol

Stromsburg resident, 82

Linnea Miliana (Nelson) Krol, age 82, of Stromsburg, died May 30, 2004 at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church of Swede Home, ELCA, with Pastor Donna Durrette officisting. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 4 at Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola. Burial will be in the Swede Home cemetery. Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola is in charge of arrangements.

Linnea was born Feb. 23, 1922 at their home west of Stromsburg to Petrus and Miliana (Chindgren) Nelson. She attended country school, District #47, west of Swede Home and graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1940. She attended Luther College in Wahoo and then Luther Hospital School for Nurses in Moline, Ill. for three years, graduating as a registered nurse.

On May 16, 1947, Linnea married Victor Krol at Rock Island, Ill. They were parents of two children.

In 1949 they moved west of Stromsburg where they farmed for more than 50 years, residing on the farm until Victor died May 5, 2001. Linnea remained until February 2004 when she moved to Assisted Living at Midwest Covenant Home where she resided until her death.

Linnea was employed at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital since its opening in March, 1956. Served as staff nurse, central supply, director of nurses, OB nurse and OR supervisor. She initiated the Junior Aide program which led many Polk county girls to a nursing career.

Linnea was a lifetime member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church ELCA, an active member of WELCA, choir and past church board member.

Survivors include one son, Vincent (Rhonda) Krol of Osceola; one daughter, Bonnie (Robert) Dittmer of Eureka, Mont.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Preceding were her parents, husband, Victor, and brother, Theodore P. Nelson, and great-grandson, Justin Robert Dittmer.

Eddie R. Hild

Bellevue, Neb. resident, formerly of Benedict, 35

Eddie R. Hild, age 35 of Bellevue, Neb., died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Omaha. He was born on Feb. 8, 1969 at Honolulu, Hawaii to James and Cinda (Doremus) Hild. He was a 1987 graduate of Benedict High School, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1987 to 1997. He was currently employed as a computer programmer for Fiserv in Omaha. Eddie was a member of the Benedict United Methodist Church and Just Jeeps of Omaha. On July 1, 2000 he was married to Michele Naveira at Benedict.

He is survived by his wife, Michele of Bellevue; son Derek Hild and daughters, Erin and Allie Hild all of Aurora; father, Jim (Helen) Hild of Seward; mother, Cinda Hild of York; sister, Melanie Hild and special friend, Celia Rodriguez of Clayton, Ohio; grandparents, Ray Hild, and Edwin and Ethel Doremus, all of Benedict; niece, Sophie Louise Hild of Clayton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Louise Hild.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 14, 2004 at First United Methodist Church, 7th & Nebraska Ave. in York with the Rev. Richard Melano officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant Hill cemetery, Benedict. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Metz Mortuary in York. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Jordan J. Hall

McCool resident, 13

Jordan John Hall, 13, of McCool Junction, entered his heavenly home on Monday, April 19 at Omaha. He was born at Hastings on February 12, 1991 to Phil and Wanda R. (Ehlers) Hall and was a seventh grader at Emmanuel Lutheran School in York.

Celebrating Jordan's life are his parents, Phil and Wanda Hall; big brother Lance; twin sister Elizabeth; little brother Samuel all of McCool; grandparents, Melvin J. and Helen Ehlers of Waco and Ruth Hall of York; aunts and uncles, Galen and Lynette Naber of York, Mary Bereuter of Lincoln, Betty and Chris Finnestad of Suwanne, Georgia, Steve and Anita Hall and Barb May all of York; Steve and Debbie Hendricks of Lincoln; numerous cousins and friends. Greeting Jordan Hall in Heaven was his grandpa Junior Hall.

A celebration of life service will be at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church of York with Reverend Art Brinkmeyer officiating. A time of fellowship will be held prior to the service at 4:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Private grave side services will be held at a later date. Visitation will begin on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Metz Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Helen I. Shaw

York resident, 92

Helen I. Shaw, 92 of York, died Monday, June 14, 2004 in York. She was born December 6, 1911 near Cordova, NE to Harry and Lily (Lull) Miner. After graduating high school and normal training she taught rural school near Cordova for several years and then was a Red Cross worker in San Francisco, CA during WWII. Helen then She married Harold Shaw in Kansas. She and her husband owned and operated Shaw's Music Store in York for 20 years. Helen was a member of the Baptist Congregational Church in York, York American Legion Aux., Community Concert in Lincoln and York Retired Teachers.

Survivors include one son, Zane Lee (Mary) Shaw of Buford, GA; one daughter, Luene (Bob) Rogers of York; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth (Haywood) Richards of Longmont, CO.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, daughter, an infant sister, sister and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 17th at Metz Chapel in York with Phil Towle officiating. Burial will be in the Exeter cemetery at Exeter, NE. Memorials in care of the family. Visitation begins at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in York. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com. Edmund Herbert Huffman

Beaver City resident, 81

Edmund Herbert Huffman, 81, of Beaver City, formerly of Ord, died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 in Beaver City.

He was born March 17, 1923 at Sutherland to Marion and Maude (McMullen) Huffman. Edmund was baptized into the Christian faith and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. He attended various country schools and graduated in 1941 from Curtis High School.

He farmed and ranched near Koshopah in Blaine County with his parents until entering the U.S. Army in 1945. He served until his discharge in 1947.

After returning from the Army, he met Vesta Lange and they were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord on Sept. 25, 1949. Edmund and Vesta farmed near Ord for most of their married life. God blessed this union with four children, Marion, Martin, Maynard and Mary.

In 2002, Edmund and Vesta moved to Beaver City to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Lloyd Upson.

Survivors include his wife, Vesta; daughter, Mary (Lloyd) Upson of Beaver City; daughter-in-law, Deb Huffman of York; brother, Bill (Odetta) Huffman of Ainsworth; two sisters, Mabel Rodocker of Halsey and Mary (Rex) Duryea of Broken Bow and sister-in-law, Fern Huffman of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Jennifer (James) Hays, Heath Upson, Shawna Upson and Tina Homolka and three great-grandchildren, Maverick, Sable and Devin Homolka. Preceded by his parents; brother, Gerald and three sons, Marion, Martin and Maynard.

Services were held Friday, June 11 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ord with Rev. Dave Uden (Edmund's brother-in-law), officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in Ord City cemetery.

Memorials are requested to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in hope that a cure will be found and others will not suffer as did Edmund's three sons.

Christena Kaspari

York resident, 94

Christena M. (Leininger) Kaspari, 94, of York, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at York.

She was born Nov. 16, 1909, at Exeter, to Patrick and Christena (Noel) Nevin. Christena was a 1928 graduate of Exeter High School and married John A. Leininger on Oct. 30, 1928, in Exeter. John died in 1963. She married Henry Kaspari in 1969 in York. He also preceded her in death. Christena was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, St. Joseph's Altar Society, C.D.A. and Legion of Mary.

She is survived by one son, Jerome (Elaine) Leininger of York; daughter, Marilyn (Francis "Tanny") Reinsch of Shickley; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson; step-son, Don Kaspari of Lincoln; step-daughter, Laurene Meredith of Lincoln; and step-daughter-in-law, Jackie Kaspari of Lincoln.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husbands, four brothers, four sisters and a grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Metz Chapel in York. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Monday, at Metz Mortuary in York. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com.
