Steven Eugene Betka

Exeter resident, 49

Steven Eugene Betka died February 22, 2004 at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, Neb., at the age of 49 years, 6 months and 18 days.

He was born to Eugene M. and Betty L. (Christiancy) Betkja at York on Aug. 4, 1954. He was one of two children in the family.

Steven grew up on a farm 1/2 mile east of Burress and attended Exeter Public School K-12, graduating in 1972. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science. In 1975, he was a member of the UNL Livestock Judging Team which won the National Barrow Show Judging Contest. Following graduation, he returned home to farm and raise hogs with his parents.

On his 25th birthday, Aug. 4, 1979, he was united in marriage to Audrey Schropfer of Ohiowa. He and Audrey were looking forward to celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary this August. They lived in Geneva for 1 year, on a farmstead southeastof Exeter for 10 years and the remainder of their married life on his home place east of Burress. The birth of their two sons, Derek Allen and Ryan Gene, blessed their marriage. After farming for 20 years, Steve became a Hog Buyer for Farmland Foods in Crete where he was currently employed at the time of his death.

Steven was baptized and confirmed at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva. He was currently a member of the Exeter United Church of Christ and was serving on the Church Council.

Throughout his lifetime, Steve served on the State Soybean Board, Fillmore County Extension Board, Board of Directors for Dorchester Co-op, Fillmore County Corn Growers Board and Farm Bureau Board. He was actively involved in 4-H as a member or as a leader throughout his life. In 1971, he showed the Champion Market Swine at Ak-Sar-Ben with his hog, Herman, and was also named a State Swine 4-H Award Winner. However, his greatest highlight was watching his own children follow in his footsteps. Nothing made him happier than to watch Derek and Ryan show their pigs. Steve considered the County and State Fairs his yearly vacation, and thrived in helping teach his sons and children in the community how to properly care for and show their animals.

Words cannot describe how much Steve loved his family. His favorite scripture reading was 1 Corinthians 13 the chapter on love. Every day he told his family that he loved them. He and Great Grandma Schropfer taught Derek and Ryan to play pitch when they were four and five years old, and Steve always welcomed a friendly game of Hearts. He was never too busy to read to his boys when they were small or to help them with school work when they were older. Steve was a math whiz and transferred that ability to his boys. He scheduled his day so that he could attend their extracurricular activites. Even after Derek and Ryan were in college, Steve made shre that he and Audrey met them for a meal together every weekend. He cared greatly about his family and friends and ALWAYS tried to make people laugh.

Putting others above himself became apparent the day that Steve requested Organ Donor be stamped on his driver's license. That request was honored last Sunday evening. His donation report indicated that his contribution may enhance the lives of 60 to 70 people.

Steve was preceded in death by his brother, Doug; father and grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, Derek and Ryan; mother, Betty; double cousin, Angeline Betka Sokolik and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Geneva on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004 with Pastor Lynn Strandt and Pastor Bharat Surender officiating. Mike Zeleny, organist, accompanied Scott Olson, who sang "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". The congregational hymn was "You'll Never Walk Alone". Recessional song was "Walk of Life".

Pallbearers were Delton Barr, Ken Cross, Jim Mager, Donald Manning, Mike Motis and Robert Schropfer. Honorary pallbearers were David Biba, Jerry Engle, Jay Knapp, Paul Kuska, John Siert and Jerry Zieg.

Interment was in the Geneva Public cemetery with Farmer & Sons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials are directed to First Congregational United Church of Christ, Geneva, United Church of Christ, Exeter or Exeter Rescue Squad.
