Justena Critel

Henderson resident, 83

Justena Critel, age 83, formerly of Stockham, died Sunday, March 21, 2004 at the Henderson Care Center.

She was born in York County on July 20, 1920 to Dietrich and Elizabeth (Ott) Bergen. She attended school in York County at District 90. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1937 and then attended York College where she received her General Elementary Certificate in August, 1938. Justena taught country school at West 73 near Henderson for one year.

Justena was married to Lester H. Critel May 7, 1939 at the home of her parents near Henderson. They set up farming first in York County and then in Hamilton County. She was the mother of three children, Marjorie, Lester Jr. and Eugene. She continued to be a farm wife until their retirement in 1975, when they moved into the village of Stockham. There with the children gone from the home, she became very interested in crocheting, making dolls, bears, quilts, afghans, working in her flowerbeds, baking homemade bread, cookies and angel food cakes. She kept a log of her projects and her records are 41 afghans, 95 dolls, 48 bears and 101 doilies.

Lester died Oct. 14, 1982. When her health began to fail, she moved to Henderson to Midtown Manor to take life easier and to be closer to her sisters and brothers. In August 2002, she entered the Henderson Care Center.

She made a profession of faith and accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior. She was baptized and a member of Stockham Community Church for many years. Justena was also very active in Christian Women's Club, Stockham Women's Group, Bible Study Group, playing her harmonica at various places and helping out whoever needed some extra hands.

Surviving are her three children, Lester (Betty) Critel of Ravenna, Eugene (Lynn) Critel of Grand Island and Marjorie (Kale) Vontz of Lincoln; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Benhard Bergen; two sisters, Luetta Nunnenkamp and Rosella Bergen, all of Henderson; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Critel of McCool Junction and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Willard, Ernest and Alfred; four sisters, Eva, Lizzie, Martha Critel and Mildred and four brothers and one sister who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 24 at Stockham Community Church in Stockham with the Rev. Paul Nauman officiating. Interment will be in the Stockham cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary.

Mildred Green

Lincoln resident, 95

Mildred B. Green, 95, of Lincoln died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Lincoln.

She was born Nov. 13, 1908 in York, to Ernest E. and Lula (McCoy) Mason and graduated from York High School in 1927. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Lincoln, the United Methodist Women and loved being around her grandchildren. On Sept. 17, 1927 she was married to George Green in York.

She is survived by her daughter, Lola, and her husband, Gordon Yocum of Lincoln; one granddaughter, Gayle, and her husband Roger Cox of Lincoln; one great-grandson, Russell Cox of Lincoln; and a great-granddaughter Anna Cox, also of Lincoln; one brother, Kenneth and his wife Bernice Mason of York; and a sister, Ardith Luth of Utica; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Clarence and Floyd Mason.

Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m., Monday at Greenwood cemetery in York with the Reverend Dennis Hanneman officiating. Memorial services will then be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Lincoln. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m., Sunday and then 9 a.m. until noon, Monday at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the Village Manor Auxiliary in Lincoln. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com

Mildred M. Teegerstrom

Stromsburg resident, 95

Mildred M. Teegerstrom, 95, of Stromsburg died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at the home of her daughter in Youngtown, Ariz.

She was born at Stromsburg Jan. 30, 1909 too Noah S. and Casandra Jane (Lane) Graham. She attended Blue View District 56 and Stromsburg High School, graduating in 1925.

On Feb. 3, 1927 she married Albert Teegerstrom. They were engaged in farming, first living near Osceola. In 1936 they returned to the family home to care for Mildred's parents.

Prior to her retirement, she worked at Annie Jeffrey Hospital and Midwest Covenant Home in the dietary departments. She was a home products dealer for 12 years.

She was a member of the Stromsburg Methodist Church, Jolly Workers Extension Club, Goodwill Club, Past Noble Grand of Rainbow Rebekah Lodge, Past Association President of Ladies Auxiliary to the Patriachs Militant. Hobbies included gardening, flowers, homemaking and sewing.

Survivors include one son, Vance (Ramona) Teegerstrom of Stromsburg; three daughters, Pearl (Rev. Robert) Holbrook of Fremont, Carol (Lincoln) Schmidt of Youngtown, Ariz., and Lorna (Gordon) Olsen of Cairo, Ne.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren and one niece, Oreta Barman of Mt. View, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in 1983; one daughter, Fern M. Cook; grandson, Dan Teegerstrom; infant brother, Edward and brother, Chester Graham; and sister, Aseneth Radley.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 13, at the Stromsburg Methodist Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Richard Milano and the Rev. Kent Schaufelberger officiating.

Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Burial will be in the Hoffer cemetery in Gresham.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Stromsburg Methodist Church.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Reuben Schlueter

York resident, 85

Reuben E. Schlueter, 85, of York, died Thursday, March 04, 2004 at York. He was born May 3, 1918 on a farm near York to Ernest and Anna (Wergin) Schlueter. On Oct. 15, 1944 he was married to Florence Staehr at Waco. They lived and farmed in the York and Waco areas until they moved to York in 1998. Reuben was an active lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Waco and a member of the Farmers Union.

Survivors include his wife Florence of York; 3 sons, Byron (Diana) of York, Royce of Utica and Rodney (Stacey) of Waco; 7 grandchildren, Tracey (Glen) Holtzclaw of York, Troy Schlueter of Seward, Todd (Jennie) Schlueter of Lincoln, Lindsay and Mitchell Schlueter both of Utica and Ryan and Ian Schlueter both of Waco; 3 great-grandchildren, Whitney Schlueter of York, Lilly Schlueter of Utica and Micah Schlueter of Lincoln. Also surviving is his sister Ruth Gocke of York and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, daughter Rogene and brother Walter.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the St. John's Lutheran Church south of Waco with the Rev. Paul Kern officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Visitation will begin Friday at 5 p.m. at Metz.

Elinor Keller

Former Aurora resident, 85

Elinor Jane Keller, 85, formerly of Aurora, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, in Lincoln.

She was born the daughter of Levi Leo and Lula Anna (DeBusk) Taylor, at Sargent on Dec. 28, 1918.

When she was six, the family moved from Sargent to a family farm southwest of York. Elinor attended several country schools and graduated from Polk High School in 1936, where she was valedictorian. After graduation, she taught country school near Polk and then became a secretary at the York County Extension Office.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Keller on Feb. 14, 1945, at her parents' home at York. Four children were born to this union. In March of 1947, they moved to a farm in Hamilton County. Her husband passed away on Nov. 20, 1976. She lived on the farm until 1979 when she moved to Aurora. In the spring of 2000, she moved to Lincoln to be closer to her daughter.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Aurora, where she was very active as a Circle Leader, President of the CWF, was a member of the church choir and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also active in a Hamilton County Extension Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother (Floyd Taylor) and an infant brother and sister.

Survivors include her four children, Shirley (David) Wilcox of Lincoln, Dale Keller of Louisville, Colo., Duane Keller of Aurora, and Gary (Joanna) Keller of Centennial, Colo.; a sister, Margaret Adkisson of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Ryan (Janee) Wilcox of Lincoln, Eric (fiance Corrin) Wilcox of Los Angeles, Calif., Steve Keller and Lindsey Keller, both of Centennial, Colo.; and nieces, nephews and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 8, at the First Christian Church in Aurora. Pastor Sam Fox and Pastor Jane McMahill will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at 1 p.m., at the Aurora cemetery. Visitaiton will be from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, at the Higby-McQuiston Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church.

Gail Shay

York resident, 91

Gail Shay, age 91, of York, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 in York.

Services are pending.

Eleanor Ann Scholz Hoffschneider

Paxton, IL resident, 91

Eleanor Ann Scholz Hoffschneider, age 91, died June 6, 2004 at Paxton, Illinois. Eleanor was born in Seward, NE on December 6, 1912 to Gustav Frederick and Lisette (Ulm) Scholz. Her father and older sister, Erna, were killed in a tornado when she was 5 months old. She is looking forward to getting acquainted with them in her heavenly home.

Eleanor, her mother and her older brother, Gus, lived in Seward until 1915 when her mother married Ado Gerdes and they moved to Garrison, NE.

Eleanor graduated from David City H. S. in 1930 and then took her nurses training at the Lutheran Hospital in York. She spent 3 years working there before she became the bride of Clarence Hoffschneider on October 11, 1936 in York. The Lord blessed their union with 2 sons, Dave and Jim and daughter Gretchen.

Eleanor was active in the choir and Ladies Aid at St. John's Lutheran Church at Waco for many years. Clarence and Eleanor farmed in York County for many years until they retired in 1976 and moved to York. They became members of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In August of 1996, Eleanor moved to Rantoul, IL where she worshipped at Peace Lutheran in Thomasboro, IL.

Eleanor was a gracious lady who enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, needlepoint, crossword puzzles and singing. She was a member of the Prairie Village Voices for several years. Her favorite part of the day was the sing-a-long at the nursing home. Eleanor was loved by so many people, especially by the caring staff at Heartland. They always told us how sweet mom was and that she thanked them for everything they did for her.

Eleanor is survived by her two sons; Dave (Sue) Hoffschneider of Thomasboro, IL; Jim (Cheryl) Hoffschneider of Ainsworth, NE; her daughter Gretchen (Wesley) Wheatley of Apple Valley, MN; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two half-sisters, Edna Sharp and Frieda Ellis both of Seal Beach, CA; sister-in-law Irma Hoffschneider of York and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Clarence; sister Erna Scholz; brother Gus Scholz; half-sister Evelyn Berry and her husbandCharlie; two step-brothers John & George Gerdes and step-sister Marie Gerdes; sister-in-law Lola Scholz; three brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws, Erich Hoffschneider, Orville and Ruth Hoffschneider & Wanda and Norman Schultz.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 25, 2004 at 10:00 am at the St. John's Lutheran Church south of Waco with the Rev. Paul Kern officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin Thursday at 9:00 am with family greeting relatives and friends from 7-8:30 pm at Metz Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Hour, St. John's Building fund or family choice. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com. Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.

Thomas M. Bailey

McCool Junction resident, 60

Thomas M. Bailey, 60 of McCool Junction, NE, died Monday, May 17, 2004 in Lincoln. He was born January 8, 1944 in York to Claude and Evelyn (Young) Bailey. Tom was a 1962 graduate of McCool High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 68. He married Patsy Arbuck on May 10, 1964 in York. Tom farmed with his dad and brother, Gene for many years. January 20th of 2004 marked Tom's 40th year of auctioneering and 30 plus years of real estate service in Nebraska. He was current owner of Bailey and Associates Reality and Auction. He was a member of the McCool American Legion Ronald Porter Post #341, 40 and 8, and the York Elks Lodge #1024.

He is survived by his wife Patsy of McCool Jct.; sons, Shawn (Holly) Bailey of Henderson, NE and Shane Bailey of Lincoln; 3 grandchildren, Allison, Ashley and Kyle Thomas Bailey; father and mother-in-law Russell and Greta Arbuck of McCool Jct.; nephews, Tim (Rebecca) Bailey of McCool Jct., Terry (Sally) Bailey and Kyle (Patricia) Bailey both of York.

Preceding him in death were his parents: brothers, Gerald Bailey, Gene and his wife Linda (Young) Bailey.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the First United Methodist Church in York. Burial with military rites will be in the Holoch cemetery east of McCool Jct. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Metz Mortuary in York. Memorials in care of the family. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com. Harry V. Jones

McCool Jct. resident, 80

Harry V. Jones, age 80 of McCool Jct., NE died Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Exeter, NE. He was born March 5, 1924 at Craig, Nebraska to Henry and Kathleen (Higgins) Jones. He was married to Helen McFadden on March 16, 1944 at Omaha, NE and they owned and operated Jones Thriftway in McCool Jct. for many years. Harry was then employed by the McCool Co-op until his retirement. He was a member of the York Jehovah's Witnesses and the American Legion.

He is survived by his son, William (Peg) Jones of Lincoln, NE; three daughters, Sandra Fristron of Palm Bay, Fl., Linda Galaway of York, and Julie (Mark) Rea of McCool Jct. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant daughters Elizabeth & Ruth Ann and 2 brothers, Jack & Dick.

Mr. Jones has been cremated and graveside services will be held at a later date. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com.
