Max Rhodes, 61, of York died Monday, August 9, 2004 in York.

Services are pending. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Cynthia Jean Eloge

Nebraska City resident, 48

Cynthia Jean Eloge, 48, of Nebraska City and formally of York and Bradshaw areas, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at Bryan LGH Medical Center in Lincoln.

Cynthia Jean Wray was born on Feb. 4, 1956 in Omaha to Arthur Glen and Dorothy Elizabeth (Lottes) Wray. She was formally married to Rick Eloge on Sept. 24, 1977 in Rockport, Mo. To their union was born four children, Kerri, Trista, Dustyn and Rebecka.

In 1980 Cynthia and her family moved to Nebraska City where she worked at the American Meter Company. Cynthia and Eric Gress became friends in 1989, where they loved to travel and go camping. Cynthia was diagnosed with cancer and had to retire from work on Dec. 1, 2003. She had to enter Bryan LGH in Lincoln this past week.

Survivors include her companion for 15 years, Eric Gress of Nebraska City; three daughters, Kerri McMann, Trista Eloge and Rebecka Eloge, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Dustyn Eloge of Nebraska City; Eric's children, Derek Gress of Lincoln, Shane Gress of Nebraska City, and Erika Gress of Omaha; three sisters, Janet Turck of Lincoln, Marilyn Beetem of Lincoln and Barbara Gannen of York; three brothers, William Wray of York, Richard Wray of Glenwood, Iowa and Jerome Wray of Council Bluffs, Iowa; other relatives and friends. Preceded by her mother on July 29, 1975, her father on Jan. 15, 1989 and sister, Donna Naber on July 26, 2003.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nebraska City with the Rev. Marsha Anderson officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery in York at 2 p.m. Aug. 11. Visitation for friends will begin Tuesday, Aug. 10, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Peterson Mortuary.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral service to be conducted by Peterson Mortuary of Nebraska City.

Mabel M. Harmon

O'Neill resident, 98

Mabel M. Harmon, 98, of O'Neill died July 14, 2004 at St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 17, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church in O'Neill.

Mabel was born May 11, 1906 at Table Rock the daughter of Victor and May Johnson. She attended Ansley High School.

On March 17, 1925, Mabel was married to Morris Harmon at Broken Bow. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and VFW Auxiliary in O'Neill.

Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie (Roy) Berner of York and Lois (Al) Vorce of O'Neill; two sons, Donald (Ann) Harmon of Grand Island and Raymond (Janice) O'Neill; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Morris and one son, Wayne.

Harry V. Jones

McCool resident, 80

Graveside services for Harry V. Jones, 80, of McCool Junction, will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 at the McCool cemetery. Services are open to the public.

Lunch will follow at the McCool Town Hall and is also open to the public.

Daniel R. Griess

Grafton resident, 77

Daniel R. Griess, 77, of Grafton, formerly of Sutton, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, NE.

Daniel was born December 5, 1926 near Sutton, NE to Otto H. and Martha (Huber) Griess. He attended rural country school near Sutton. He was united in marriage to Beverly Shambaugh on July 21, 1954 in Aurora, NE. They made their home on a farm near Sutton. To this union four daughters were born. Daniel farmed in the Sutton area until he had a stroke in 1992, when he retired. They moved to Grafton in late 2000. Daniel has been a resident of Fairview Manor in Fairmont for the past year.

he was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Sutton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson and two brothers.

He is survived by his wife Beverly of Grafton; four daughters, Shirley Skiver and husband Dennis of North Platte, Ladonna Tool and husband Scott and Cynthia Marquis and husband Steven both of Lincoln, and Maxine Epp and husband Curtis of Henderson; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruth Redler and Salome Korb both of Sutton, Rachel Frank of Yankton, SD, and Elsie Ochsner of Fort Collins, CO; two brothers, Jonathan and Curtis O. Griess both of Sutton, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 13, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at the Salem United Methodist Church in Sutton with Rev. Dale Coates officiating, burial will be in the Sutton cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the family. Koehler Mortuary of Sutton is in charge of the arrangements.

Merle E. Youngland

Salina, KS resident, 75

Merle E. Youngland age 75 of Salina, KS died Monday, August 9, 2004 at Salina. He was born June 9, 1929 at Loup City, NE, to Arthur and Grace (Newton) Youngland. Merle was the Operations Manager for Brown Welding Supply, Salina. He had worked for Jim's Formal Wear, Rickel Manufacturing and had owned Texaco Service Stations in Salina. He was a Masonic Blue Lodge, #60 member, 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and Isis Shrine Temple Member.

Survivors include two daughters: Tammy and husband Don Wood of Tulsa, OK and Debbie and husband David Skinner of McDonough, GA. A brother, Harold and wife Dorine Youngland of York, and four grandchildren.

Mr. Youngland is preceded in death by his spouse, Lois, his parents Arthur and Grace Youngland and a brother, Delavin Youngland.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 14 at the grave side at Grand Island City cemetery, Grand Island, NE, with the Rev. Michael Benischek officiating. There will be no visitation. Friends may call at the Ryan Mortuary, Salina, KS. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Anthony H. Smejkal

York resident, 86

Anthony "Tony" H. Smejkal age 86 of York died Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at York. He was born December 23, 1917 at Wilbur, NE., to John and Rose (Fillipi) Smejkal. Tony was a longtime employee of the A.J. Dresden Company for over 26 years and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York as well. He enjoyed singing in the Men's Choir in church, enjoyed playing the organ, gardening and was an avid cook.

On June 14, 1939 he was married to Marian D. Cerha at Crete, NE.

He is survived by two sons, Ken (Donna) Smejkal & Rich Smejkal both of Cedar Rapids, IA. One daughter Rose Mary and her husband Harold Jr. "Bud" Deprez of Riverdale, NE; 4 grandsons; 6 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 1 brother and 2 sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with the Reverend Leo Seiker officiating.

Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family. The family will greet friends and neighbors from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday evening prior to the Rosary service which starts at 8:00 pm. Visitation begins after 1:00 p.m., Thursday at Metz. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com.

Dr. Arthur W. Struempler

Fort Collins, Colo., resident, 83

Dr. Arthur W. Struempler, 83 of Ft. Collins, Colo., died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 at his residence in Ft. Collins.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18 at the Swede Home Lutheran Church near Stromsburg. Inurnment will be in the Swede Home cemetery with military honors. Solt Funeral Home of Polk is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

He was born Dec. 12, 1920 in rural Nebraska north of Lexington near Buffalo. Arthur entered graduate studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1951, receiving his Master of Science degree in 1953 with a B.S. in chemistry and in 1957 he graduated from Iowa State University at Ames with a Ph.D. in biochemistry.

He married Josephine Swanson of Polk on March 19, 1950. Arthur retired to Ft. Collins in 1991.

He discovered the 'world class' Bayard Meteorite, weighing more than 165 pounds. This rare 1982 find continues to be one of the larger meteorite finds on record. His many professional contributions continue to be acknowledged. He traveled extensively and enjoyed yearly international destinations with his wife. Many of his former students maintained contact during the years, often seeking his advice and guidance. His beliefs, values and principles were self-evident and countless lives were enriched because of his many efforts.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine; son, Michael of Ft. Collins; daughter, Barbara (Ollen) Gray and granddaughter, Lauren of Auburn, Ala.; brother, Harold (Dee) Struempler; and sister, Martha Berg of Denver, Colo. Preceded by a brother, Arnold.

Jerry K. Bristol

Cordova resident, 64

Jerry K. Bristol, age 64, of Cordova died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, in Lincoln, Ne.

He was born to Roy and Avis (Crowder) Bristol on March 20, 1940 at York, Ne.

Survivors include his wife Linda M. Bristol of Cordova; daughter and son-in-law, Lori B. and Brent Moore of Exeter; sons, Steven L. Bristol of Fremont, Michael J. Bristol of Omaha, and Christopher R. Bristol of Fremont; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Charlene Bristol of Fairmont, Norman and Monica Bristol of Exeter and John and Winnie Bristol of Fort Dodge, IA; mother-in-law, Elna Hansen of Cordova; sister-in-law, Pamela Russell and husband David of West Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 20th at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cordova. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19 at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter. Military graveside services will take place at Zastrow cemetery in Cordova with Rev. Rob Sachs officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Cordova American Legion Post 359 or to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Leota Buller

Hampton resident, 78

Leota Buller, age 78, of Hampton died Tuesday evening, August 17, 2004, at Henderson Care Center in Henderson.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 21st at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton. Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Interment will be in the Hampton cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 P.M. Friday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at higbymortuary.com.

Leota Buller, the daughter of August and Lydia (Griess) Bettger, was born in Sutton, Nebraska, on April 15, 1926 and died in Henderson, Nebraska on August 17, 2004, at the age of 78.

She grew up in Sutton, where she attended school.

Leota was united in marriage to Johnnie E. Buller on October 6, 1946. She and her husband lived on a farm south of Hampton, for 50 years, before moving to Hampton in 1996. Johnnie passed away on January 18, 1999. In August 2003, she entered the Henderson Health Care Center.

Leota enjoyed reading and getting together with friends and family. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton.

Her parents, husband, three sisters, Lenora Beliel, Johanna Meyer and Edna Meyer and two brothers, Leon Bettger and Hilmer Bettger preceded her in death.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Ron (Lu) Buller of Cawker City, Kansas and Royce (Wanda) Buller of Hampton; four daughters, Connie (Ron) Hinman of Fullerton, Ruth Wengler of Aurora, Donna (Virgil) Stearns of Rising City and Pat (Pat) Shank of Montrose, Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Lucille Calkins of Cresent, Iowa.

John T. Friesen

Henderson resident, 92

John T. Friesen, 92, of Henderson, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at Henderson.

He was born Sept. 15, 1911 at Litchfield, to Thomas H. and Katherina (Klippenstien) Friesen. He was a lifelong Hamilton County farmer and was an active member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. He also enjoyed woodworking in his later years.

On Jan. 30, 1936 he was married to Marie Friesen at Henderson.

He is survived by his wife Marie of Henderson; three sons, Don J. and his wife Pauline Friesen of Henderson, Mel and his wife Connie Friesen of Aurora, and LaVerne and his wife Carol Friesen of Wallace; four daughters, Rubena and her husband Thomas Lloyd Hiebner of Henderson, Myrna and her husband Robert Johnson of Denver, Colo., Mary and her husband Richard Claassen of Aurora and Amanda and her husband Clarence Rempel of Newton, Kan.; 21 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Kenneth and his wife Esther Friesen of San Jose, Calif.; three sisters, Marie Peters and Estaline Quiring, both of Henderson, and Doris Braun of Aurora.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, four sisters and a grandson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 9, 2004 at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson with Reverends Weldon Martins and George Kaufman. Burial will be in the Bethesda cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Radio Broadcast or to Grace Children's Home.

Visitation will be 1-9 pm., Saturday and Sunday with family greeting friends Sunday from 7-9 pm.
