Norma V. Johnson

Exeter resident, 79

Norma V. Due Johnson died Thursday, March 18, 2004 at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 7 days.

She was born in York County near Cordova on Nov. 11, 1924 to William Due and Anna Nelson Due. She was one of three children in the family.

Norma formerly taught school in Fillmore County, Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Cordova. She attended Grad View College in Des Moines, Iowa, Colorado State College of Education in Greeley where she received her BA. She obtained her MA at the University of Nebraska and attended Biblical Seminary in New York City.

She was married to Edward Johnson of Peoria, Ill., on Jan. 30, 1971. They were later divorced on March 4, 1980.

Norma worked as a Lutheran Student Counselor in Des Moinwa, Iowa and Corvallis, Ore. She was later a Home Missions worker for Augustana Lutheran Church in the Pacific North West States. She was a member of the Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma in York and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cordova.

Surviving are her sister, Louise Spencer of Bloomingburg, N.Y.; four nieces and two nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceding her were her parents, William and Anna Due; and sister, Mildred Sorensen.

Norma directed that her body be donated to the State Anatomical Board. Memorial services will be conducted from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cordova on Thursday, March 25, 2004 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Sachs officiating. Her remains will be interned in the Zastrow Cemtery at a later date.

Farmer Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements with memorials directed to the American Cancer Society.

Evelyn G. Miller

Clarks resident, 89

Evelyn G. Miller, 89, of Clarks, died at St. Elizabeth Community Health Center in Lincoln on Sunday, March 14, 2004. Services will be Thursday, March 18 at 11:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Clarks with Rev. Richard Dimond officiating. Burial will be in the Osceola Cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, March 17, 2004 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com .

Evelyn was born on February 3, 1915 in Polk County to Albert and Hildur (Samuelson) Stromberg. She grew up in Polk County where she attended Blue School and then graduated from High Prairie High School in 1932. On March 28, 1932, Evelyn G. Stromberg and Arthur L. Miller were united in marriage in Wahoo. After their marriage, they farmed in Oto, Iowa and then returned to Nebraska in 1937. They farmed in the Clarks area and then in 1948, they purchased their farm northeast of Clarks. Arthur died on March 10, 1979 and Evelyn continued to live on the farm. She moved into Clarks in 2001 and moved to Merrick Manor in Central City in 2003.

Evelyn was baptized and confirmed in the Swede Home Lutheran Church near Stromsburg. They joined the Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church and then transferred their membership to the United Methodist Church in Clarks in 1946.

Evelyn was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, the Sunny Side Neighborhood Club, and the Clarks Research Club. She enjoyed quilting, making lap robes, and playing the piano.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter Bonnie Garretson of Central City; her son - Ronald and Peggy Miller of Clarks; two sisters-in-law Lorena Miller of Osceola and Emma Stromberg of Polk; ten grandchildren; Kim Garretson, Ken Garretson, Chris Garretson, David Miller, Lynne Garretson, Sue Cordsen, Lori Fousek, Lou Anne Miller, Gloria Gress, and Deborah Miller-Zepeda; 25 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son-in-law Morris Garretson; one grandson Brian Garretson; two great grandsons Wade Cordsen and Martin Miller; three brothers Richard, Claude, and Clyde.

Ralph Ernest Eggerling

Waco resident, 68

Ralph Ernest Eggerling, age 68, longtime Waco area farmer, died Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Stromsburg. He was born October 9, 1935 at Milford, NE to Alfred & Esther (Hinrichs) Eggerling. On September 8, 1957 he was married to Pat Moravec at Utica. Ralph was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church at Waco and he enjoyed traveling, pheasant hunting, fishing and attending his grandchildren's activities.

Ralph is survived by his wife Pat of Waco; daughters, Nancy and husband Matt Lee of York, and Carol Kirkpatrick and her boyfriend James Loury of Omaha; grandchildren, Mike Abell of Lincoln, Jason Abell of Waco and his girlfriend Renee Richters of Lincoln, Katie Lee, Renee Kirkpatrick and Nikki Kirkpatrick all of York; great-grandchildren, Kaden Kirkpatrick of York and Brinley Abell of Lincoln. Also surviving are his 2 brothers, Marlin & Betty Eggerling and Richard & Nancy Eggerling all of Lincoln and his sister Erma & Ron Wekesser of Rochert, MN and his father-in-law Bill and his wife Irene Moravec of Seward. Preceding him in death were his parents Alfred & Esther Eggerling and his mother-in-law Lydia Moravec.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at Peace Lutheran Church in Waco with the Rev. Kris Rebentisch officiating. Burial will be at the Waco Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will begin on Monday at 1 PM with family greeting relatives & friends on Tuesday from 7-8 PM at Metz Mortuary in York. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com. Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.

Mildred M. Teegerstrom

Stromsburg resident, 95

Mildred M. Teegerstrom, 95 years old of Stromsburg died Saturday, March 6, 2004 at her daughters home in Youngtown, Arizona.

Services are pending.

Irene W. Pollock

Utica resident, 89

Irene W. Pollock, 89, of Utica, Ne., died Sunday, March 7, 2004 in Utica.

Irene was born near Staplehurst, Ne. on December 2, 1914, the daughter of William and Louise Mailand. She was married to Louis Pollock on May 30, 1964 in Seward, Ne.

She worked at Seward Dry Goods, as a telephone operator and in 1964 joined the Partnership of Pollock Bros. Impl. & Hdwe. in advertising.

Surviving are her husband Louis and nephews and nieces.

Preceding him were her parents, William and Louise (Mueller) Mailand; brothers, John, Fred, Bernhard, Martin and Walter Mailand; sisters, Wilhelmina Ritterbush, Bertha Minze, Emilie Zwick, Ida Prange, Clara Mayland and Lora Mailand.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica with burial taking place at the Utica Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Volzke Mortuary in Seward and one hour before the service at the church.

Volzke Mortuary in Seward is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Myers

Former Polk resident, 91

Raymond Forrest Myers, 91, of Grand Island, formerly of Polk, died at his home on Monday, March 1, 2004.

Ray was born on April 12, 1912, in Polk to John B. and Lulu A. (Orndorff) Myers. He grew up in Polk and graduated from Polk High School in 1931. On June 14, 1941, Raymond F. Myers and Wilma J. Peters were united in marriage in Fullerton and were devoted to each other for more than 60 years. Ray's first position in his profession as a steamfitter was with the Cornhusker Ammunitions Plant in Grand Island. From there he went west and worked in several states before settling in Arco, Idaho in the late 1940s where he continued to work as a steamfitter and general foreman.

Ray was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Arco and was very active in the Idaho Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. After his retirement in the late 1970s, Ray and Wilma returned to Nebraska to live in Grand Island, where they belonged to the Harvest Time Baptist Church.

Ray enjoyed nature and wildlife throughout his life. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and shared the family's love of gardening.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wilma, of Grand Island; one sister, Vivian Bayer of Polk; nieces and nephews, Stephen Funk of Missouri, Patricia Funk of Omaha, Karen Funk of Washington, D.C., Christine Funk of Lincoln, Mary Beth Dodson of North Platte, John Myers of California; Stacy Myers and Rory Myers both of Arizona, Nancy Carvalho, Linda Rendon, Kathleen Lobey, Michael Sperry and Sharon Martin all of Washington.

Preceding him in death were his parents; five brothers, Dwight, Allan, Robert, Clarence "Mike, " and infant brother Donald; and two sisters, Ellen Jane Matson and Bette Jo Stapleton.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 5 at 11 a.m., at the Solt Funeral Home in Polk with Rev. Roger Burke officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, March 4, from 5:30-7 p.m., at the Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be at the Arborville Cemetery near Polk. Memorials are suggested to the Crane Meadows Nature Center, 9325 S. Alda Road, Wood River, NE 68883. Solt Funeral Home in Polk is in charge of the arrangements.

Mildred Jensen

Nelson resident, 82

Mildred Marie Jensen, the daughter of John and Anna (Kolling) Schlamann was born on March 13, 1921, on the family farm near Nelson. She died Feb. 27, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Superior at the age of 82.

She was one of eight children. She was baptized on April 21, 1921, and confirmed on Aug. 12, 1934, both at Salem Lutheran Church, Superior. She attended school at Daisy Dell #69 and graduated with the class of 1939 from Nelson High School.

She was united in marriage to Herbert M. Jensen on Aug. 4, 1946, at Salem Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with five sons and two daughters.

She lived in the communities of Nelson, Ruskin, Hardy, York, returning to Nelson.

She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Churches, Salem and St. Paul's in Hardy; the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as district president, president, vice-president, secretary and receiving her 50-year pin; Luther League; and the Lutheran Church Women.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Herbert on Feb. 29, 1984; brother, Walter Schlamann; sisters, Leona Anderson Garrelts, Caroline Doering, Alice Wilken and an infant sister.

Survivors include her sons, John and wife, Merideth of Clay Center, Jesse and wife Carolyn of Superior, James of Nelson, Jerry and wife Gail of North Platte, and Jay and wife Linda of Chester; daughters, Jolene Jensen of York, and Serita Karmazin and husband Darold of Lincoln; two sisters, Esther Schlamann of Superior, and Fern Schriever of Hastings; 12 grandchildren, Darren, Jason and wife Melissa, Sara Jensen, Michael, Kevin and Jenilee Jensen, Matthew, Christopher, Korynn and Garrett Karmazin, Joel and Justin Jensen; four great-grandchildren, Paige, Makenna and Brandon Jensen and Tessa Karmazin; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held this morning (Monday) at 11 a.m., from the Salem Lutheran Church in Superior with Pastor Dan Hayes officiating. Interment will be at the Salem Lutheran Cemetery at Superior. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior was in charge of the arrangements.

Darrell William Sternberg

Missouri resident, 74

Darrell Sternberg, 74, of Boonville, Mo., died Thursday, March 4, 2004 in Boonville, Mo.

Darrell Sternberg was born in Ulysses on March 8, 1929, the son of William and Edna Sternberg. He was married to Vivian Francis on August 15, 1954. She died May 10, 1994. He married Pamela Freeman on July 1, 1995.

He was General Manager at Bekins Moving and Storage for 7 years and was a truck driver for St. Paul Equipment for 11 years. Prior to that he was a farmer. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #52.

Surviving are his wife, Pamela Sternberg; four daughters, Ronda Sternberg of Fairfax, Va., Judy Sternberg of Omaha, Valerie Bragg of St. Paul, and Kimberly Sternberg of Aurora, Colo.; two sons, Bill Sternberg of Mitchell and Darrin Freeman of Omaha; one sister, Beverly Nelson of Waverly; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him were his parents, William and Edna Sternberg; brother, Harvey Sternberg and first wife, Vivian Francis.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 9 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Neb. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church.

Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Nickolas G. Thomazin

Gresham resident, 50

Nickolas G. Thomazin, 50, of Gresham, died Feb. 28, 2004, at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Health Center in Osceola.

He was born April 25, 1953, in Genoa to Glenn L. and Cecilia M. (Cahill) Thomazin. Nick attended school at Big Cut Country School between Genoa and St. Edward, Genoa, Sacred Heart School in Shelby and graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1971. After high school, he began farming near Gresham.

On May 1, 1981, he was united in marriage to Patricia Gondringer at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. To this union, two children were born.

He farmed and enjoyed spending time with his wife and children. His hobbies included golfing, bowling and stopping for a cup of coffee at the many local coffee shops.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Shelby. He was active in Polk County 4-H, was a past Polk County Fair Board member and a past member of the Shelby Co-op Board.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Gresham; son, Adam of Genoa; daughter, Kelli of Gresham; two brothers, James of St. Edward, Patrick (Candace) of Lincoln; one sister, Joan (Frank) Steinmann of Lincoln; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Paul Gondringer; and one sister-in-law, Deborah Garrison.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. Father John Rooney will be officiating. Visitation will be Monday, March 1, from 4-7 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. A 7 p.m. vigil service will be held, followed by a Rosary. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Shelby.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Arrangements are by Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola.

Mary T. Seidel

York resident, 69

Mary T. Seidel, 69, of York, died Friday, February 27, 2004 at York.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Monday and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Father Leo Seiker officiating. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday at the Metz Chapel.
