Gideon T. Holzwarth, 75

(July 29) FREEMAN, S.D. - Gideon Theodore Holzwarth, 75 years, 11 months and 25 days, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Freeman Community Nursing Home. He was born on July 30, 1926, at Freeman to Emanuel and Martha (Nehlhaff) Holzwarth.

He was baptized Oct. 10, 1926, by Rev. Buettell in the Reformed Faith. He was confirmed by Rev. William Korn in Johannesthal Reformed Church. He completed eight years of school in the Mutschelknaus Country School District 68. On June 2, 1950, he married Velda Huether of Tripp, S.D. They lived their married life farming west of Freeman until he became ill in February 2002. He always enjoyed his animals with a special love for horses. He had a great love for music. He enjoyed going on bus tours with his wife, Velda. They especially enjoyed a tour through Europe in the fall of 1998. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and was very proud of his four grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of Zion Reformed Church where he had served as an elder and deacon for many years, and 42 years as church and choir organist. He and his cousins played as the Red Hat Band. He is survived by his wife, Velda of Freeman; two sons, marlin (Patty) Holzwarth of Freeman and Myron (Audrey) Holzwarth of Lennox, S.D.; one daughter, Marlene (Brad) Stewart of Alliance; four grandchildren, Matthew and Kevin Holzwarth and Jamie and Sean Stewart. He also is survived by one sister, Arlene (Vern) Johnson of Rapid City, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother-in-law and three nieces.

Mr. Holzwarth's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 29, at Zion Reformed Church, Menno, S.D., with Revs. Robert Grossmann and Herman Van Stedum officiating. Pallbearers will be Matthew, Kevin and Todd Holzwarth, Glenn Vogel, William Schoenfish, Michael, Dennis and Kevin Huether. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery. Kostel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence H. Ritter, 86

(July 30) ALLIANCE - Clarence H. Ritter, 86, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at his home in Alliance. He was born April 14, 1915 at Ellsworth, NE to Leo and Lottie (Hudson) Ritter.

He graduated from Seneca High School and the Lincoln School of Commerce. He married Pauline Fredrick on December 25, 1937, in Alliance. He began working for the C.B.& Q. Railroad in 1935 and retired as a Conductor/Brakemen from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1975. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and had served as chairman of the U.T.U. His survivors are his wife Pauline; daughters Clarice and Gary Mills of Alliance, Claudia Lichty and her friend Dan Kelly of Elizabeth, Colo., Colleen and Steve Seeley of Alliance; brother and his wife, Robert and Jan Ritter of Round Rock, Texas; grandsons, Tim Mills, Scott Mills, Jeff Mills, Aaron Lichty; granddaughter, Briana Seeley; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 31 at the Alliance Cemetery. The Reverend Mark Schutt of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The family prefers memorials to the American Diabetes Association for Neuropathy research. Donations may be sent in care of the family at 716 Belmont Street, Alliance, NE 69301. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert G. Kutschara, 88

(July 30) RUSHVILLE - Robert G. Kutschara, 88, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at the Chadron Community Hospital. He was born Febr. 13, 1913, sough of Hay Springs. His parents were Carl and Mary (Raddatz) Kutschara.

He attended Sandridge School south of Hay Springs. He married Alma Vybiral Oct. 21, 1936. They lived north of Hay Springs until 1948 when they moved to a farm north of Rushville. Survivors include his wife, Alma of the home; brother, Tony Kutschara of Hay Springs; sister, Edith Campbell of Rogers, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kutschara's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 28, at the United Methodist Church of Hay Springs, with Rev. Eric Parker officiating. Burial will be at the Hay Springs Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Rushville Ambulance. Donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347-0443. Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary of hay Springs is in charge of arrangements.

William Erickson, 43

(July 30) NEW LONDON, N.Y. - William Erickson, 43, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his home in rural New London. He was born Aug. 26, 1957 at Gulfprot, Miss. His parents were William Allan and JoAnn Darlene (Ronding) Erickson.

He grew up at Hermantown, Minn., where attended grade school and graduated from high school in 1975. He lived in Duluty until 1979. He married RaiAnn May Seeley May 9, 1981, at Pike Lake, Minn. They lived in Alliance until 1997 when they moved to New London. He was an engineer for Burlington Northern for 21 years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles at Willmar. He is survived by his wife, RaiAnn, three daughters, Christine Wiegand of Crawford, Amanda Erickson and Kimberly Erickson both at home. He also is survived by his parents William and JoAnn Wiegand of Waskish, Minn.; two brothers, Kevin Erickson and Glenn Erickson of Duluth, Minn.; and one sister, Twila Uotinen of Superior, Wis.

Mr. Erickson's funeral will be at noon, Monday, July 30, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church.

William Delsing, 66

(July 30) HEMINGFORD - William Joseph "Billy Joe" Delsing, 66, died Monday, July 28, 2003, at his home following an extended illness. Bill was born Feb. 13, 1937, to Harry and Lena (Annen) Delsing, at the ranch near Dunlap.

He attended country school in Dawes County and graduated from St. Agnes Academy at Alliance in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army for two years specializing in Artillery Track Vehicle and Automotive Maintenance. He was then employed at Farmer's Coop Elevator in Hemingford. He married Donna Hennings Nov. 22, 1958. They moved to Atchison, Kan., where Bill attended St. Benedict's College. They returned to Hemingford where Bill continued his work in the grain business. He managed the Berea elevator for Deaver Grain and Oil and continued as the manager under Kelley Bean. He worked at the Berea elevator for 42 years and retired in June 2002. Bill was a lifetime member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 9, and a retired Hemingford Volunteer Fireman. He volunteered with the Boy Scout and Cub Scout organizations, CYO, coached little league baseball and umpired baseball and softball. He was a lifetime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. His survivors include his wife Donna; children Michael & Sandra Delsing of Kennesaw, Ga., Bradley & Joy Delsing of Alliance, Bruce & Leti Delsing of Marysville, Wash., Michelle & Joe Loudon of Lincoln, Jennifer & Joe Stahlecker of Spencer, and Sean Delsing of Hiawatha, Iowa; randchildren, Michael & James Manning & Jack Loudon of Lincoln, Libby, Ryan & Jordan Delsing of Kennesaw, Drew & Emma Stahlecker of Spencer, and Nikki Soto of Fort Worth, Texas. He also is survived by sisters Bernice Wood, Virginia Campbell, Marjorie & Kenneth Prochazka, sister-in-law Beverly Delsing, all of Hemingford, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bonnie Prochazka and a brother, Harold.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery with military graveside rites. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at St. Bridget Church. Memorials are suggested to Dr. Bjorling's "Festival of Hope" Cancer Charity, Prairie Haven Hospice or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Florence D. Shelmadine, 77

(Aug. 2) ALLIANCE - Florence D. Shelmadine, 77, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Box Butte General Hospital. She was born December 7, 1924, to Alfred and Sylvia (Partridge) Hoppes at Burwell.

She attended schools at Bennett County, S.D. and graduated from Bennett County High School at Martin, S.D. in 1942. After graduation she worked in Civil Service at the Black Hills Ordnance Depot at Igloo, S.D. for several years before moving to Long Beach, Calif. where she worked at the Regge Optical Company. She married Marion E. Kamerzell January 12, 1945, at Long Beach, and moved to Keyport, Wash. where Marion was stationed with the Marine Corps. After his discharge in September of 1945 they returned to Igloo, until 1946, when Marion was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She had worked as a secretary for C.H. Brittan and Langford Insurance Agency for 25 years, and for Stan Feddersen Insurance for 7 years. She married D.D. "Jimmie" Shelmadine April 22, 1983. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7, and the Eagles Auxiliary. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sherrilyn Kamerzell of Vacaville, Calif., James and Mary Kamerzell of Tucson, Ariz., and David and Jeanne Kamerzell of Windsor, California; step-children, Kay Morris of Lincoln, Lannie Shelmadine of Alliance, Sally Yeager of Fondu Lac, Wis., and Shelly Haines of Alliance; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Jerry Hoppes of Gering; and sister, Leola Mitchell of Gloucester, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and her husband, D.D. "Jimmie" Shelmadine.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, Aug. 5, at the United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the church, Prairie Haven Hospice, or to the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Reuben Wernke, 80

(Aug. 5) BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. - Reuben Wernke, 80, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Sunrise Hospital at Las Vegas, Nev., of respiratory distress after a lengthy illness. He was born May 26, 1923, at Bonsteel, S.D., to Henry and Agnes (Opbroek) Wernke.

He served in the U.S. navy from 1943 to 1945 (USS Pierce, APO-50) as a coxswain in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge, he moved to Alliance and co-owned several service stations with his brother John Wernke and Gene Engelhaupt. He married Thelma Elizabeth Wilson on April 16, 1953, at St. Bridget Catholic Church at Hemingford. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived at Scottsdale, Ariz., from 1960-66, where he was active in the real estate market. For a short time, he owned a dry-cleaning business at Calumet City, Ill. They returned to Alliance in 1966, when he was a salesman for Bill Campbell Chevrolet and later an agent with New York Life Insurance with the late Kirt Smith, until his retirement in 1991. They later moved to Bullhead City until his death. He was a member of The American Legion Post 7, VFW No. 1517 and the Eagles Aerie No. 136. He is survived by his wife Thelma of Bullhead City; son Bill Wernke and Tara Wernke of Alliance; and grandsons Casey and Andy Wernke. He also is survived by a sister, Lucille Manzon of Lomita, Calif.; and brothers Leo Wernke of Alliance and Bernard Wernke of Fullerton, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mary Engelhaupt and Amanda Ohri; and brothers, Hildred, Gene, Leonard, Edmund, Herbert, John and Raymond.

A memorial service will be scheduled at Alliance at a later date. Cards may be sent to the family at Riverview RV Resort, 2000 E. Ramar Rd., #633, Bullhead City, AZ 76442.

John M. Woods, 93

(Aug. 5) ALLIANCE - John M. Woods, 93, died Saturday, August 2, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Sep. 3, 1909, at Rushville, to John C. "Cal" and Grace (Brooks) Woods.

He graduated from Rushville High School in 1927 and attended Wesleyan University. On March 28, 1932, he married Elsie Burton at Rushville. He worked in the construction of the United Methodist Church in Rushville in the 1930's. After working in farming and selling dairy products he began selling and servicing sewing machines with Woods Sewing Machine Shop. They moved to Alliance in 1943 and he continued with the sewing machines sales and services in the area of the panhandle. He continued in this trade until his recent retirement. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Rushville and Alliance where he had previously been a Sunday school teacher in both communities, and he was an over 60-year member of the Kiwanis Club where he had served as past-president. He is survived by his children and spouses, Burton M. and Gloria Woods of Las Vegas, Nev., Carmen and Lee Greenawalt of Morro Bay, Calif., and Verlene and Don Phillip of Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren, Russett and Greg Goulding, Stuart M. and Susan Craig, Robert and Anna Greenawalt, Louise and Scott Hunter, Fred Greenawalt, Walt Phillip, Scott Phillip, Terry and Chris Phillip and Keith and Colleen Foster; and 17 great-grandchildren. His sister, Thelma Potter of Albany, N.Y., also survives him as well as special friends Larry and Sherrie Curtiss, Dale Ettle and Linda Beiriger and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers James and Robert, an infant daughter Ann Mae, and his special friend Vesta Ettle.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, August 8, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, 704 Box Butte, Alliance, NE 69301; Nebraska Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 639, Alliance, NE 69301-0639; or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Maxine Williams, 84

(Aug. 5) CHADRON - Maxine Mary Williams, 84, died Friday, Aug. 2, at her home. She was born April 7, 1919, at Monongah, W.Va., to Frank and Pearl (Saunders) Smith.

She is survived by her husband Merl Williams of Chadron; sons William (Anna) Mozes and Richard Mozes of Alliance; daughters Mary Jo (Tom) Moore of Gordon and Teri (Mark) Adamson of Wheatland, Wyo.; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Williams' graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Greenwood Cemetery, with Rev. Russ Seger officiating. No memorial has been established. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth L. Mackey, 90

(AUGUST 6) CHADRON - Elizabeth Lucille Mackey, 90, died Dec. 30, 2000 at Crest View Care Center at Chadron. A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the Chadron Cemetery, with Lyn Norvilli officiating.

Hilda Lowery, 69

(AUGUST 6) HEMINGFORD - Hilda Jane Avery Lowery, 69, died Saturday, August 4, 2001 at Hemingford Community Care Center.

She was born September 19, 1931 at Clio, Ala. to Charles R. and Thelma E. (Hardy) Long. She served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1952. She was married to Byford Dean Avery in April 1952. She lived in Chadron from 1971 to 1990 working in administration for the U.S. Forest Service. While there she was a member of the Assembly of God Church and the American Legion. She later married Buford Lowery and moved to Oregon. She moved to Hemingford this year

. Her survivors are her son, Byford Dean Avery, Jr. of Alliance; daughters, Laurel Huss of Hemingford, Alicia Fox of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and grandchildren, Jennifer Avery of Alliance, Kyle Huss of Hemingford, Sierra Fox and Storm Fox of Cheyenne. She also is survived by brothers, Charles Long, Jerry Long; and sisters Eleanor Parker and Nancy McAdams all of Alabama. Her husbands, one brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, August 7, at the Hemingford Cemetery. The Reverend Craig Collins will officiate. American Legion Post #9 will provide military Rites.

Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Community Care Center Van Fund, P.O. Box 307, Hemingford, NE 69348. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alma A. Kutschara, 85

(AUGUST 6) RUSHVILLE - Alma A. Kutschara, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at her home at Rushville. She was born Feb. 18, 1916 north of hay Springs.

Her parents were Joseph and Timotea (Valadyka) Vybiral. She attended Whiteclay School north of Hay Springs and graduated from Hay Springs High School. She was married to Robert G. Kutschara Oct. 21, 1936 at Hay Springs. They moved north of Rushville to farm in 1948. He preceded her in death July 24, 2001. She is survived by her sister, Ollie Evans of hay Springs, and numerous neices and nephews.

Mrs. Kutschara's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 6, at the United Methodist Church of Hay Springs, with Rev, Eric Parker officiating. Burial will be at the Hay Springs Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Rushville Ambulance Fund. Donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Drabbels, P.O. Box 443, Hay Springs, NE 69347-0443. Chamberlain-Drabbels of Hay Springs is in charge of arrangements.
