Delores Buller

Henderson resident, 78

Delores J. Buller, 78, of Henderson, died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at Henderson.

She was born on Jan. 6, 1926, to John J. and Amelia (Miller) Schrag on a farm south of Freeman, S.D.

She received her elementary education in a one-room country school just north of the farm.

She was baptized on Nov. 23, 1941, by Rev. Willard Claassen and became a member of the Salem Mennonite Church in Freeman, S.D.

Delores graduated from the Freeman Academy, in South Dakota, in 1944.

She attended one year at Freeman Junior College and received a teaching certificate.

She taught in a one-room country school in the Freeman area for two years.

On May 8, 1947, she married Peter Buller and they spent their working years on the farm near Henderson.

She transferred her church membership to the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson in 1949 where she remained a faithful member until her death.

Delores taught Sunday School for a number of years, at both churches in Freeman and Henderson.

She was a member of the Mission Circles at Bethesda Church. She also participated in numerous volunteer activities.

She enjoyed gardening and traveling. Some of the vacation trips included to Hawaii, Alaska, Israel, Jordan and Egypt and most of the United States.

In 1976, she and her husband retired and moved to Henderson.

Delores was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; daughter-in-law, Cheryl L. Buller; sister, Vergie Schrag; and her parents.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, James Buller of Lincoln, and Robert Buller and Chou Ly of Comer, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Robert and Cleva Waltner of Freeman, S.D.; grandchildren, Sovath Ly of Hampton, Ga., and Rachel Buller of Comer, Ga.; nieces and nephews, Chuck and Ruth Mueller of Halstead, Kan., and Maynard and Barbara Yoder of Freeman, S.D.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Interment will be at the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., Wednesday, at Metz Mortuary in Henderson, which is in charge of arrangements.

Alta M. Dinkelman

York resident, 90

Alta M. Dinkelman, 90, of York, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at York.

She was born April 19, 1913, in York County, to Leonard and Emma (Blum) Leybold and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church at Waco where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. Alta enjoyed playing cards in her bridge club, sewing, quilting and gardening.

On March 7, 1937, she was married to Norman A. Dinkelman at Waco.

She is survived by one son, Don, and his wife, Susie Dinkelman of Lincoln; a daughter, Janet, and her husband, Robert Tieken of Omaha; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace, and her husband, Grant Mullally of Utica; brother-in-law, Bill Sayers of Lincoln; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Leybold of Lincoln, Minerva Crowder of Waco and Eleanor Dinkelman of Duarte, Calif.; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Peace Lutheran Church in Waco with the Revs. Kris Rebentisch and Marvin Bergman officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to Peace Lutheran Church. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m., Sunday. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com

Paul Troester

Hampton resident, 87

Paul E. Troester, 87, of Hampton, died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004.

Paul was born on May 13, 1916 in Hampton to William H. and Margaret (Bindewald) Troester. He attended rural Hamilton County School and Salem Lutheran School; then graduated from Aurora High School in 1933. On Oct. 20, 1942, Paul entered the United States Army. He served in Australia, New Guinea, Leyte and Japan. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1945. On March 31, 1946, Paul E. Troester and Marlene Baack were united in marriage at Zion Lutheran Church near Hampton. They lived on the family farm south of Hampton and farmed and operated a grade A dairy. Paul used innovative and progressive methods of farming. He retired from farming in 1982, and his son, Steve, continues the farming operation.

Paul was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. Chess, golf and bowling were favorite pastimes of his. He bowled a perfect 300 game in 1975 at Mapleway Lanes in Aurora.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlene of Hampton; three sons, David and Sharyn Troester of O'Neill, Bruce and Vicki Troester of Marsland, Steve and Debra Troester of Hampton; one daughter, Beth and Dennis Andrews of Hampton; two sisters, Louella Otto and Willa Dee and Wally Thoen, both of Bellevue, Wash.; brother-in-law Bill Ludwig of Bremerton, Wash.; 13 grandchildren, Denise and Bob Litz and Aaron Troester, all of O'Neill, Will, Lane, and Kelly Troester, all of Marsland, Jenny Troester of Omaha, Jeff, John, and Joe Troester, all of Hampton, Paul Andrews of Hampton, Julie and Andy Marr of Aurora, Eric Andrews and MaryLou Andrews, both of Hampton; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Alice Holtmeier and Marguerite Ludwig; and two brothers-in-law, Martin Holtmeier and Don Otto.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 2 p.m., at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton with Rev. George Damm officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery near Hampton. Visitation is Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 3 p.m., to 8 p.m., at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hampton. Solt Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of the arrangements. Michael L. Johnson

York resident, 48

Michael L. Johnson, 48, of York, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004 at York.

He was born July 17, 1955 in Lincoln to Kay E. and Marlene R. (Warnke) Johnson. He was a 1974 graduate of Lincoln High School and was retired from Time-Warner Cable in York after 21 years of service as a Lead Technician.

On Jan. 7, 1996 he was married to Cindy Pohl at Las Vegas, Nev.

Surviving are his wife, Cindy of York; a daughter, Brandi Colson of York; brother, Edward L. (Tammy) Johnson of O'Fallon, Mo., and sister, Patricia K. Spilker of Lincoln; parents, Kay and Marlene Johnson of Lincoln; grandmother, Alma Warnke of Auburn; and mother-in-law, Betty Pohl of York; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two grandfathers and a grandmother.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Kerry Andrews officiating. The family will greet friends and neighbors from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the mortuary. No visitation as the body was cremated. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Boyd Critel

York resident, 57

Boyd Lee Critel, 57, of York, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004 at York.

He was born at York on Nov. 24, 1946 to Alvin S. and Elizabeth E. (Grigsby) Critel. Boyd attended school at McCool Junction. On Nov. 26, 1967, he was married to Rita L. Spencer at Central City. Boyd worked at Sunflower Beef in York until 1976 when he began organic farming. He was a member of several patriotic organizations. Boyd was a man who stood by his beliefs and convictions, no matter what anyone else had to say.

His greatest passion was hunting, fishing, his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Rita of York; family, Dallas and Heidi Critel of Salem, S.D., Stacy and Marty Shipps of York, Cody and Jessica Gibson of York, Cindy and Chris Critel of York, Michelle Potter of York and Bobby and Jessica Jensen of York; grandchildren, Marcus, James, Dustin, Shelby, Little D., Elizabeth, Brian, Dakota and Kaylee; his mother Elizabeth Critel of York; brothers, Larry and Diann Critel of York, Loyd and Carol Critel of Lincoln; sisters, Evelyn and Delmar Polacek of Surprise, and Barbara "Bob" and Roland "Mickey" Haydel of Oregon.

Preceding him in death were his father Alvin Critel; sister Artie Burton; father-in-law Robert Spencer; and special friend John Wiemer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Metz Chapel in York with Bill Holt officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com.

Elsie Hromadka

Friend resident, 78

Elsie Mae Hromadka, 78, of Friend died suddenly at her home in Friend Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004.

She was born on a farm south of Exeter on Aug. 13, 1925, to Frank and Josephine (Novak) Stetina, the third of four children.

She attended a country school and graduated from Exeter High School. She was united in marriage on Dec. 27, 1945 to Frank Hromadka Jr. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milligan and to this union three daughters, Pamela, Patricia and Connie, were born.

Elsie was very proud of the educational accomplishments of her daughters and granddaughter.

Elsie and Frank made their home south of Friend where she was a busy mother and farm wife. They moved into Friend in 1995. She loved being outside whether in the yard, garden or tending her animals. Throughout her life Czech heritage played an important role that was passed down to her family. She displayed this with her fluency of the language and faithfully listening weekly to Czech music. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Society of Friend. She also was a member of the Saline Center ZCBJ Lodge #389.

Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela Hromadka of York, Patricia (Dennis) Carpenter of York, Connie (Mark) Strouf of Wilber; granddaughter, Lindsay (Jeremy) Kohout of Milford; brother and sister-in-law, Frank (Florine) Stetina of Lincoln; sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn (Ed) Hyland of Prairie Village, Kan.; nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank, in 2000; and a brother, Edwin Stetina.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Friend with Fr. David Bourek officiating. Interment is in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Milligan.

ZCBJ services by ZCBJ Saline Center Lodge #389 will be given at the graveside by Pauline Homolka. A Rosary Service was held at Tuesday, Feb. 24, with family greeting friends at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend. Visitation is Tuesday, from 2-7 p.m., and will be one hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials are directed in care of the family.

Lauber-Moore Funeral Home in Friend is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers are Justin Lauver, Les Wilson, Steve Wilson, Dick Weber, Gary Blatter, Ed Adkins and Roy Bulwan. Honorary pallbearers are Rick Stetina, Boyd Miller, Roland Hummel, Fred Novak and Jim Novak. Donna Harding, organist, accompanied the congregation as they sang "Here I Am Lord" and "Amazing Grace". Dr. Carvel J. Holt

Grand Junction, Colo., resident, 79

Dr. Carvel J. (Cob) Holt, 79, died Feb. 17, 2004 at his home.

He was born in Inland, Neb., Feb. 11, 1924 to James G. Holt and Pearl M. Schoolcraft Holt.

Dr. Holt attended high school in York. He served as a line officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was discharged in 1948 with the rank of LT (j.g). He also served in the U.S. Public Health Service as a senior assistant scientist doing research in parasitology for four years. Carvel had a B.S. in chemistry, an M.S. in parasitology from Kansas State and a D.D.S. degree from the University of Nebraska. He practiced dentistry and retired in 1980, moving to Grand Junction, Colo. He spent many years as a volunteer for Boy Scouts of America and was honored with the Distinguished Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award by the BSA. His hobbies were travel, skiing, gardening, tennis and sharing life with his many friends.

Carvel married Pandora Morgan in 1948. She died April of 2002.

He was a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his son, Morgan J. (Cindi) Holt and grandsons, Jay and Nathan of Phoenix, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Orvel G. Holt; parents and another brother and sister.

A celebration of his life will be held at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. A graveside service will be held in early summer at Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery in the Bradshaw/York area.

Contributions may be made in his memory to either Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 3133 F Road, Grand Junction, CO 81504 or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western, CO., P.O. Box 60307, Grand Junction, CO 81506.
