Marie D. Rathjen Struebing

David City resident, 93

Marie D. Rathjen Struebing, 93, of David City died Feb. 12, 2004 at Butler County Health Care Center in David City.

She was born near Brainard, Jan. 2, 1911 to Joseph E. and Anastacia E. (Novak) Janky.

She married Adolf Rathjen Aug. 24, 1927 in Ulysses. Following his death in 1960, she married Joseph Struebing on April 21, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Garrison.

She lived in the Butler County area her entire life. She worked for 13 years at Butler County Hospital as a nurse's aide. She was a homemaker who enjoyed craftwork, sewing and fishing. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two sons, Robert Rathjen of Carson City, Nev., and David Rathjen of Shelby; three daughters, Dolores Novell of David City, Cherie (Robert) DeTurk of Kearney and Darleen Soukup of Carson City, Nev.; brother, Bernard Janky of Medford, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two husbands, Adolf Rathjen (1960) and Joseph Struebing (1989); one daughter, LaVerne Rathje; one grandson, Calvin Novell; two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 16, 10:30 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in David City with the Rev. Richard Harre officiating.

Visitation is Sunday 2 - 8 p.m. at Roberts -Chermok Funeral Home and Monday, one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be David City Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to David City Cemetery.

Arrangements are being handled by Roberts-Chermok Funeral Home of David City.

Dwayne Fenster

York resident, 74

Dwayne L. Fenster, 74 of York, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 at York.

He was born Feb. 20, 1929 at York to Ralph and Alma (Hoffschneider) Fenster. A Concordia High School and College graduate, he taught Lutheran Elementary and High School in North Dakota, Iowa, Washington, Michigan and California. On April 25, 1953 he married LaVaughn Roth at Davenport, Iowa.

Dwayne is survived by his wife LaVaughn of York; one daughter, Kae (Randy) Snider of Houston, Texas; four sons, Derek (Chris) Fenster of York, Keith (Candice) Fenster of Lincoln, Kevin (Lanel) Fenster of Waverly and Greg (Holly) Fenster of Staplehurst. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Brandon (Brandice) Fenster, Tamara Fenster, Danielle Fenster, Josh Fenster; and a great-granddaughter Shyanne Fenster; his brother Verle (Frieda) Fenster of Rapid City, S.D.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Ronald and Charles.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m., at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Revs. Art Brinkmeyer and Tim Marshall officiating. Burial will be at St. Johns Cemetery south of Waco.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Lutheran Hour or Emmanuel Faith Lutheran School. Visitation will begin Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Opal E. Mills

Seward resident, 88

Opal Elizabeth Mills, 88, of Seward and formerly of Utica, died Dec. 22, 2003.

She was born Aug. 15, 1915, in Concordia, Mo., to Ola F. and Emma Meta (Hinck) Peterson. She was baptized on Sept. 5, 1915, at Concordia. She came to Seward to live with her aunt, Lena Zima, and attended school in Seward. On April 25, 1934, Opal was united in marriage to Charles Ralph Mills in Seward at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. To this union, five children were born, Betty, Darlene, Roger, Beverly and Bob.

Opal and Charles farmed in the Utica area for many years and after Charles' death, Opal moved into Seward in 1984.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Utica, the Westfield Homemaker's Club, and for many years was a 4-H leader.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; four brothers, Rev. Erich Peterson, Erhardt Peterson, Norbert "Rusty" Peterson and Warren Peterson; her two granddaughters, Tracy (Mills) Odell and Teresa (Mills) Trent; her grandson, Tom Watson; her great-grandson, Dustin; and her son-in-law, Derald Pohl.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Betty Pohl of York, Darlene and Dale Watson of Lincoln, Roger (Sandra) Mills of McCool Junction, Beverly (Bob) Stava of Brainard, Bob and Theresa Mills of Seward; her 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 24, and from 5-8:30 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 25, at Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward and one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. John Burger officiating. Burial will be at the Seward Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice, in care of the family.

Kenneth D. Tonniges

Gresham resident, 85

Kenneth D. Tonniges, 85, longtime Gresham Auto Dealer and farmer, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at Omaha.

He was born June 26, 1918, at Gresham to Richard and Lena (Dey) Tonniges. He was a 1937 graduate of Gresham High School. On March, 31, 1941, he was married to Gladys G. Tylle at Council Bluffs, Iowa. Kenneth was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1944-46 where he received a special award for developing a pressure plate for the clutch of the Clark fork lifts. He was a Chevrolet dealer in Gresham for over 35 years and later farmed until his retirement. He was a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Gresham and was a member of the Gresham American Legion for over 50 years.

He is survived by his son, Don (Mary) Tonniges of Gresham; his daughter, Joyce (Gene) Huebner of Omaha; grandchildren, Melanie (Dave) Lempke of Papillion, Jeff (Brandi) Huebner of Omaha, David (Belinda) Huebner of Papillion and Todd (Stephanie) Tonniges of Ft. Calhoun. Also surviving are 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, Gladys, and his four brothers, Merold, Art, Floyd and Jerry.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 2 p.m., at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Gresham with the Rev. Timothy Prince. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be directed to the church. Visitation will begin Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Maxine F. Werth

Aurora resident, 84

Maxine Frances Werth, 84, of Aurora, died at Aurora Memorial Community Care on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004.

Maxine was born on Dec. 17, 1919, in Polk County to Louis A. and Berdesia E. (Huddleston) Kahler. She grew up in Polk County and attended Polk County Schools. On Oct. 7, 1942, Maxine F. Kahler and Raymond H. "Shorty" Werth were united in marriage in Lincoln. They made their home in Aurora; where Maxine was a homemaker and had worked at Aurora Memorial Hospital in the kitchen and the laundry. After the death of Raymond on April 7, 1993, Maxine continued to live in her home in Aurora.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church near Hampton and she enjoyed crocheting, making latch hook rugs, puzzles, and reading.

Those left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Carolyn Serr and LeeRay Dahlstedt of Ragan, Lois and Gary Schleichardt and Diana Britton both of Aurora; one son, Roger and Judy Werth of Hampton; sister-in-law, Virginia Werth of York; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceding Maxine in death were her husband; her son, Daryl; infant daughter, Nancy; three sisters, Esther Whitacre, Gladys Glasser and Lois Lowe; and one brother, Ralph Kahler, Sr.

Services will be Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Zion Lutheran Church near Hampton with Rev. Loren Cooper officiating. Burial will be Friday, Jan. 9 at 1:30 p.m., at the Polk Cemetery near Polk. Visitation is Friday from 9 a.m., until service time at the church. Solt Funeral Home in Hampton is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Fern M. Pulliam

Stromsburg resident, 89

Fern M. Pulliam, 89, of Stromsburg, died Jan. 5, 2004, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

She was born May 16, 1914, to John and Alice (Benson) Monson. She attended District 53 Country School northwest of Osceola.

She lived in Omaha for a period of time, and was united in marriage to James F. Pulliam in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1935. To this union, two sons were born.

Fern and her husband moved to a farm northwest of Osceola in 1949 where they were engaged in farming.

She was active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, reading the newspaper, gardening, canning, flowers and was a self-taught piano player. She also enjoyed traveling. Her husband, James, died on April 25, 1989, and Fern remained on the farm until April 26, 1994, when she moved to the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg where she resided until her death.

Survivors include one son, Jim (Dorothy) of Owing Mills, Md.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James; one son, John (who passed away on April 27, 1999); two brothers, Kenneth and Kermit; and two sisters, Pearl Barr and Evelyn Monson.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday), Jan. 8, at 10:30 a.m., at the Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola. Pastor Clifford Hoper will be officiating. Burial will be in the Osceola Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola.

Richard W. Price

York resident, 78

Richard W. Price, 78, of York, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at York.

He was born July 12, 1925, at Plattsmouth to Robert and Dolly (Underwood Perry) Price. Richard was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Bolton Post #19 at York and of the First United Methodist Church of York.

Dick was married to Merna LaVerne Ritchey at York on Sept. 17, 1951. He was an electrician for Hughes Brothers in Seward for 40 years. He and his wife also owned and operated the Lets Go Inn in York. He collected coffee cups, repaired clocks and watches and loved electric trains.

Dick is survived by his wife, Merna of York; daughter, Debbie and her husband, Charles Sanders of York; and his sister, Joann and her husband, Max Friesen of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Metz Chapel in York at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Art Phillips. Inurnment with military rites will be held at the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to Adopt-A-Pet. Due to cremation, there will be no visitation.

Robert O. Chapman

Gresham resident, 67

Robert O. Chapman, 67, of Gresham, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Gresham.

He was born April 24, 1936 at Devil's Lake, N.D., to Armon and Hazel (Holmstrom) Chapman. He was retired from the United States Air Force after serving 20 years with two tours in Viet Nam. He was also retired from Hughes Brothers of Seward after 20 years as well. Most recently, he was employed part time for the Village of Gresham as a maintenance man for two years.

Robert was a member of the Gresham Presbyterian Church, the Gresham Volunteer Fire Department, lifetime member of the Davidson-Neujahr American Legion Post #13 in Gresham, lifetime member of Post 4755 Veterans of Foreign Wars of Seward. He loved woodworking and hunting.

On May 12, 1957 he was married to Patricia Davidson in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife, Pat of Gresham; one son, Mark (Carol) Chapman of Colorado Springs, Colo., and daughter, Carla (Gary) Schumacher of Humphrey. Grandchildren include Christy Robinson of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jessica Schumacher of Humphrey, Evan Schumacher and Kimberly Schumacher of Humphrey and great-grandchildren, Trenten Robinson and Logan Proffit of Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Gresham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Noel DeKalb officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation begins 1 p.m. Sunday at Metz Mortuary in York. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com.

Rev. Marvin Herrick

Lincoln resident, 83

Rev. Marvin Virgil Herrick, 83, of Lincoln, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004.

He was born at Whiting, Kan., on Dec. 5, 1920. He was a retired United Methodist Minister, Paster Emeritus Southminster UMC, and a World War II veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil Drury and Geneva Mae Herrick; brother, Maurice; sister, Olive Jackson.

He was survived by his wife, Irma Zeller Herrick; daughter, Lorie June Tudor and husband Bill of Wilmington, Del.; son, Don Herrick and wife, Sherry; daughter, Carol Pewthers and husband Larry; grandchildren, Paul and wife Danielle, Martha Tudor, Amanda Deumic and husband Salko, Mike Pewthers, Anna Tudor, Melissa Pewthers; great-granddaughter Jordan Pewthers; brother, Verne of Raymore, Mo.; sisters, Leonore Lang of Kansas City, Mo., and Eunice Burger of Belton, Mo.; and many other family members.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Southminster UMC, 2915 S. 16th St., Lincoln. Visitation will be Friday, from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., at the Metcalf Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to the Tabitha Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in care of the Tabitha Foundation, 4720 Randolph St., Lincoln, NE 68510.
