Lester Henry Swartz

Lincoln resident, 84

Lester Henry Swartz, 84, of Lincoln died March 3, 2003. He was born on Oct. 6, 1918, to Herman and Mary (Schmohr) Swartz in Beatrice.

He was a World War II Army Veteran, a member of the VFW Post #131, former member of the Moose Lodge and an avid gardener and fisherman.

Survivors include his sons, Robert Swartz of Lincoln, and Steven (Catherine) Swartz of Lincoln; daughter and fiance, Diane Kelly and Dan Hager of York; seven grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Richard Becker of Lincoln, Edward Pitt of England, Ronald (Shirley) Pitt of England; sister-in-law, Erna Swartz of Beatrice; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Elsie; son, Richard Swartz; three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home in Lincoln. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday 9 a.m. until service time. Interment will be at Lincoln Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to The Legacy Terrace and Village Manor.

John L. Davis Jr.

Grand Island resident, 77

John L. Davis Jr. died Feb. 22, 2003, at the Grand Island Veterans' Home, where he had been a resident for the past three and one half years.

He was born in Fairbury, June 25, 1925, but spent most of his life in the Gresham and York communities. He served in the Navy in World War II. He was a lifetime member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Preceding him in death were his father, John L. Davis Sr.; his mother, Beulah Marks Davis; his brother, Emmett Davis, killed on Anzio Beach in World War II; and sisters, Melba Sergent and Dorothy Dunbier.

He is survived by his brothers, Hicks O. Davis of Albuquerque, N.M., Joseph S. Davis of Richardson, Texas; sister, Madeline Shaffer of Austin, Texas. Nieces and nephews include Harold Dunbier of Germany, Lawton Davis of Albuquerque, N.M., Cynde Coker of Shreveport, La., Jeanne Shaffer White and Jayne Shaffer Myers of Austin, Texas, Sandra Youngblood of Plano, Texas, Ann Kunde of Carrollton, Texas, and Jeff Davis of Richardson, Texas, plus numerous great-nieces and nephews.

There are no services planned at this time. Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel, 1015 Lincoln Ave., York.

Teresa S. (Mills) Trent

Ohio resident, 39

Teresa S. (Mills) Trent, 39, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Cincinnati.

She was born Jan. 4, 1964, at Seward, the daughter of Roger and Sandra (Klebe) Mills.

She was baptized at Immanuel in Gresham and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Utica. She attended the Centennial and McCool public schools.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn Trent; son, Glenn Robert; daughter, Amanda; her parents of McCool; her sister, Sherry (Jay) Kranz, nieces Kelsey and Kendra of York; paternal grandmother, Opal Mills of Lincoln; maternal grandparents, Lloyd and Hilma Klebe of Utica.

Funeral services are pending.

Memorials may be sent to her parents, at Box 211, McCool, NE 68401 -- to be used toward the deceased children's education.

Elin L. Peterson

Stromsburg resident, 99

Elin L. Peterson, 99, of Stromsburg, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

She was born April 17, 1904, at Stromsburg to Telander and Frida (Anderson) Peterson. She grew up in Stromsburg and graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1922. She then attended and graduated from York Nursing School. She moved to California. During World War II, she enlisted in the Army and served as a military nurse. Following the war, she worked at Fort Leavenworth Veterans Hospital and retired from there.

She then returned to Stromsburg. She spent the past several years living at the Midwest Covenant Home. She was a member of the Stromsburg Baptist Church.

She loved to travel in the states and abroad. She also loved to cook, bake and attend the Swedish Festival. She was special to her family and nieces and nephews.

Survivors include three brothers, Severt Peterson of Stromsburg, Rexford (Ruth) Peterson of Shelby and Elton "Bob" (Eleanor) Peterson of Stromsburg; two sisters, Verna McKeag and Maurine Peterson, both of Stromsburg; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Milford, Helmer and Carrol; three sisters, Thelma Turner, Lillian Mitchell and Harriet Fraley.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 8, at 2:30 p.m., at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. Rev. Duane Tweenton will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at the Midwest Covenant Home.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Albertina M. "Tina" Youngquist

Arizona resident, 85

Albertina M. "Tina" Youngquist, age 85 of Sun City, AZ, died Thursday, October 7, 2004 at York. She was born April 8, 1919 in Pearland, TX and was adopted by Charles C. and Margaret A. (Petersen) Cornelius. Tina was married to Norman Youngquist at Holdrege, NE on June 8, 1941. She was a graduate of UNK and was a longtime school teacher in Lexington, NE.

After her retirement, she moved to Arizona in 1976 and belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Sun City. She is survived by her 2 daughters; Pamela (Charles) Turner of Geneva and Beth (Mike) Lucas of York; 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents and several brothers and sisters.

Memorial services will be held on Sunday, October 10th at 2:00 pm at Metz Mortuary in York. Additional memorial services and inurnment will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Sun City, AZ. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Nebraska.

Cora Evelyn "Pat" Tucker

Fairmont resident, 81

Cora Evelyn "Pat" Tucker, age 81 years, of Fairmont passed away at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora on Thursday afternoon, March 20, 2003. Pat was born on May 21, 1921, at Edgar, Neb., to Charles and Adelia (Falwell) Patton. She was raised in Fairmont where she graduated from Fairmont High School with the Class of 1940. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Tucker on March 15, 1941, at Denver, Colo. She and Lloyd returned to Fairmont to live their life together, and to this union there were six children.

Pat was a homemaker for most of her life, until in the 1960's, when Pat was employed at Mumby's (and later the Stockmans Club in the 1970's and 1980's) in Fairmont. Following her retirement, she was a Green Thumb volunteer at the Fairview Manor in Fairmont and also volunteered at the Fairmont Senior Center, where she spent many enjoyable hours with her best friends playing cards.

Pat was a respected member of the Fairmont community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fairmont, a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of Royal Neighbors, the American Legion Auxiliary at Fairmont, and the Women's Club at Fairmont.

Survivors include one son, Lloyd (and wife, Jackie) Tucker of Grand Island; four daughters: Marylee (and husband, Chuck) Edwards of Fairmont, Joyce (and husband, Merritt) Otoupal of York, Shirley (and husband, Rick) Jones of Sutton, and Judy (and husband, Gary) Baumer of Rocky Face, Ga.; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; two sisters: Annabell Blanton of Peoria, Ill., and Ardith Rockeman of San Pablo, Calif.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; one sister (Dorothy Dee Wilkerson), one daughter (Donna Lee Tucker), her husband Lloyd Tucker, and two grandsons (James and Charles).

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Fairmont United Methodist Church in Fairmont with Pastor Betsy Gallaway-Carew officiating. Interment will be in the Fairmont Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Alyce M. Coon

York resident, 94

Alyce M. Coon, 94, of York died Thursday at York. She was born Nov. 5, 1908, at Cowles, Neb., to Joshua and Alma (Keeney) Fuller. She was a graduate of Cowles High School and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of York.

She is survived by her three children: sons, George Coon of Franklin, Neb., and John (Merna) Coon of York; and daughter, Carol Spieker of Bridgewater, N.J. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and seven brothers and sisters.

Alyce has been cremated and will be inurned at the Greenwood Cemetery of York.

H. Jean Hess

Lincoln resident, 79

H. Jean Hess, an Omaha resident, and the mother of Fred Hess of York, died Monday, March 24, 2003.

She was born March 8, 1924, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to J. Earl and Vena King. Jean attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and was actively involved in the First United Methodist Church in Omaha, and EC chapter of PEO. She was married to Howard W. Russell in 1945. After his death, she married Fred C. Hess in 1969. Together they founded and published the Nebraska Iowa Retailer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Earl and Vena King; both husbands; son, Bruce Hess; and brother, Charles King.

She is survived by her daughters: Patricia Irions of Aurora, Colo., Nancy (Jim) Moore of Riverside, Calif.; sons: Mike (Donna) Russell of Lorton, Va., Fred B. (Toni) Hess of York; sisters, Hartrice (Ted) Hoy of Las Cruces, N.M., and Shirley (George) DeBelly of Bozeman, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and close friends.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at First United Methodist Church, 7020 Cass St., Omaha, with the Rev. Loren Mullins officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Roeder Mortuary, 2727 N. 108th St., Omaha. Memorials can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Galen "Gail" A. Shay

York resident, 91

Galen "Gail" A. Shay, age 91 of York, died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at York. He was born May 5, 1912 on a farm near Shelby, NE to James A. and Karoline "Lena" (Beierle) Shay. Gail was married to Vera Harless in 1932 at Shelby and in 1954 married Mary Jeanne Miller at Laramie, WY. He was a retired printer & machinist, having worked for the York Republican and the Torrance Daily Breeze in Torrance, CA. He returned to York in 1995.

Survivors include his 2 daughters; Gloria Bellows of York and Judy (Frank) Eret of Seward, his son Larry (Marilyn) Shay of York; his step-daughter Sandra Betz of Lancaster, CA; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and his former wife Vera Shay of York.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife Mary Jeanne.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 27, 2004 at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Kerry Andrews officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 pm at the Shelby Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4:00 pm Thursday.

Ervin John Windhorst

Deshler resident, 91

Ervin John Windhorst, 91 years, 5 months and 3 days, died March 25, 2004 at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler. Born on a farm near Byron Oct. 22, 1912, the son of Henry and Verbena (Hofts) Windhorst. He was one of six children born to his parents.

Ervin was a baptized and confirmed member of St. Paul Lutheran Church northwest of Byron and attended Riber School District #91 and Ruskin High School through eighth grade.

He married Agnes Daisy Ocobock July 19, 1935 at United Brethren Church in Republic, Kan., and they had two children, Darlene Irene and Darrell Lee.

Ervin helped on the family farm and later worked as a broom winder at Deshler Broom Factory. They family moved to Wichita, Kan., in 1940 where he worked at Boeing Aircraft for five years. In 1947 he moved the family back to Deshler where he was employed at Galmore Construction. In 1955 he worked for Richard Reinke as plant superintendent at Reinke Manufacturing Inc. in Deshler. At the time of his retirement in April of 1981, he had worked at Reinke's for 27+ years. . He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler, serving on church council, was an usher. Ervin was admitted to Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler on July 31, 2000.

Surviving are his son, Darrell (Gerry) Windhorst of Stromsburg; 7 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eldon (Luella) Windhorst of Hebron and Roy (Jennie) Windhorst of Deshler; nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends. Preceding him were his parents; wife, Agnes on Nov. 24, 1997; daughter, Darlene (Fintel) Heckenlively; one brother, Elmer; two sisters, Esther Lipker and Freda Anderson; one son-in-law, Harold Fintel and one grandson-in-law, Philip Giangrosso.

Services will be held Monday, March 29, 2 p.m., at Deshler Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Deshler City Cemetery, Deshler. Visitation will be Saturday, 6 - 8 p.m. and Sunday 1-8 p.m. at Ahrendts Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the family. Ahrendts Funeral Home at 315 1st St., Deshler is in charge.

Gerald "Jerry" L. Scamehorn

York resident, 52

Gerald "Jerry" L. Scamehorn, age 52 of York, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at York. He was born September 6, 1951 at York to Donald and Phyllis (Carlson) Scamehorn. Jerry was a 1969 graduate of York High School and was a longtime York area commercial plumber. Jerry was married to Carol Smith on February 12, 1993 at York. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of York, the York Elks Lodge #1024, and the York Eagles Aerie #3990. Jerry had served in the Nebraska National Guard and was an avid outdoorsman and loved woodcutting and motorcycles.

He is survived by his wife Carol of Texas; his mother Phyllis Scamehorn of York; brothers Jack (Nancy) & Jay Dee (Sonja) Scamehorn all of York; sisters Jean (Dan) Gibb of York, JoAnn (Bruce) Waring of Evansville, IN and Janet (Glen) Walsh of York. Step-children Randy Smith of North Platte, NE, Rusty Smith of Waco, Rex (Erica) Smith of York and 5 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a stepson.

Memorial services will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Cathy Allen. Inurnment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. As Jerry has been cremated, there will be no visitation.
