Fred Neemeyer

Fred Neemeyer, 71, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, May 1, 2016, at his home.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 7 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Timothy White officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Saturday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM on Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion, or the donor’s choice.

Fred Neemeyer was born February 15, 1945, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Ervin and Verna (Kell) Neemeyer. Fred graduated from Columbus High School in 1963 and went to work for Mueller & Schoepf Drywall in 1964. Fred became a business partner in Mueller & Schoepf Drywall, Inc., in 1972, and retired in 2003. On December 10, 1965, Fred joined the National Guard and served active duty from March 14, 1966, to September 7, 1966. He was honorably discharged on December 9, 1971. On June 15, 1968, Fred was united in marriage to Diana Gipfert at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Fred was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was part of the men’s Bible study group. He was also a member of the American Legion. In 1985, Fred and Diana purchased their first rental property. Over the years, Fred and Diana purchased more rental property, which they still operate today. Fred was an avid outdoorsman, loved to go hunting and fishing, family trips to Canada, and traveling the United States with Diana after his retirement. Family and friends were very important to Fred and he loved his four grandchildren dearly. The three things that Fred believed in most were – God, Family, and Work.

Richard Young

Richard "Dick" Young, 76, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, April 30, 2016, at his home in Columbus.

The funeral service will be Thursday, May 5, 11:00 A.M. at the Highland Park Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Mike Escen officiating. Interment will be in the Burwell Cemetery on Thursday at 3:30 P.M., in Burwell, Nebraska. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday from 10:00 - 11:00 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:45 A.M.

Richard Young was born May 14, 1939, to Clarence and Anna Mae (Mitchell) Young, in Randolph NE. At an early age they moved to Chambers NE, where he graduated in 1957. Following graduation, he worked as a Ranch Hand for several ranchers in the area. On May 24th 1959, he married Elaine Worden in Chambers NE, shortly after they moved to Atkinson, NE, to work for Andrews and Gale Cattle Company. Later they moved to Brownlee, NE, to work at the Robert Miles Ranch. In May of 1968, they moved to Burwell NE, and began work as a Salesman at Bankers Life and Casualty Company. In 1973, Dick took a position as a district manager and moved his family to Columbus, NE. In 1978, he began work for Augustine Feed Yard in Shelby, NE, shortly thereafter he began managing the Grain Elevator for 7-11 Pork Foods. In 1991, he began managing the Husker Coop Grain Elevator in Schuyler, NE, where he retired.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Young of Columbus; children Patrick Young of Lincoln, Cynthia (Doug) Taylor of Omaha, Cheryl Scott and partner Thea Clayborn of Oklahoma City, OK; Dennis (Gwen) Worden of Columbus; Jerry Worden of Silver Creek NE. Grandchildren; Keith Scott, Chelsea Taylor, Cassandra Taylor, David Wilkinson, Justin Worden, Adam Bonczynski, Tristan Graham, Jet-Lynn Worden, Jerry Worden Jr. and Great Granddaughter Alyceea Scott-Vela.

Sister, Betty Mitchell, Brother, Burl (Joanne), Bill (Karen), Ron (Hazel) all of Idaho and Clarence Jr (Trish) of Washington State. Brother-In-Law, Merle Hansen of Idaho and Sister-In-Law Leanna Young of McCook, NE., Sister-In-Law, Bonnie (Richard) Jennings of Petersburg NE. Brother-In-Law, Lyle Worden (Shelly) of Duncan, NE as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Lavern Hansen, Darleen (LC) Hoerle, Brothers, Frances Young, Harold (Norma) Young, Brother-In-Law, Lee Mitchell. Mother and Father-In-Law, Lyle and Evelyn Worden.

He loved his family, gardening, Nebraska Football, Sports, playing cards, especially Cribbage, and his amazing love and kindness for horses, dogs, and his many stray cats.

Kenneth Reinke

Kenneth L. Reinke, 45, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the Columbus Community Hospital after a three year battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Del Lape celebrating the Mass. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Knights of Columbus Rosary, all at the church. Visitation will continue on Thursday beginning at 9:30 AM also at the church. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to either the family to start an education fund for Korben or for cancer research.

Kenneth was born June 13, 1970, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Ronald and Mary (Farlee) Reinke. He graduated from Hebron High School and moved to Columbus where he began working at Behlen Manufacturing, just celebrating 25 years of employment. On August 26, 2006, Ken was united in marriage to Gwen Gustafson at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Ken enjoyed midget car racing, going to concerts, playing disc golf and pool, fishing, cooking, brewing his own beer, movies, and hanging out with friends. Ken was known for telling stories with his own bit of flavor added to it. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Brad Hitz

Bradley James Hitz, 51, of Richland, Nebraska, died Friday, January 22, 2016, at his parents home in Columbus, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 26, at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev.'s Michael Klatt and Cory Burma officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are to be directed to the Peace Lutheran Church Music Fund.

Bradley James Hitz was born April 4, 1964, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Jon and Betty (Hynek) Hitz. He was baptized on April 4, 1964, in Norfolk. At the age of 3, the family moved to Columbus, Nebraska. Brad attended Columbus Public Schools and Central Community College where he received a certificate of achievement in microcomputers. Brad confirmed his Christian faith through confirmation in April, 1978, at Peace Lutheran Church. At the age of 18, Brad began working as a Cable Technician in Columbus. Throughout his life, he worked in several different locations across the country. In 1989, Brad was united in marriage to Deborah Osborn in Texas. Brad currently worked for Eagles Communication in Schuyler, Nebraska, as a Cable Technician. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Brad loved music and sports, and passed this passion and competitive nature on to his children. For eight years, he coached the softball team that Candace played on. He seldom missed any of the activities that his children participated in. He enjoyed playing poker, cards, golf, and fishing. His strong Christian belief was passed on to his children and grandchildren, and because of his strong faith, he was looking forward to the day that the Lord welcomed him home.

Robert "Bob" Oborny

Robert "Bob" Oborny, 69, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Monday, November 23, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 28, at 10:00 AM at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Joe Miksch as celebrant. Interment will be in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Cemetery, at Wilson, rural Clarkson, Nebraska, at 2:00 PM on Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 PM with a 7:00 PM Vigil Service at the church. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Memorials are to be directed to the family.

Robert “Bob” Oborny was born August 17, 1946, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Emil and Wilma (Bukacek) Oborny. He attended Schuyler Public Schools and graduated from Schuyler High School in 1964. Bob began farming with his father right after high school. On January 16, 1971, Bob was united in marriage to Sharon Pieters in Schuyler. They farmed and raised hogs for a number of years. In 1977, they moved into Schuyler where Bob operated the Husker Bar and sold feed. In 1983, the family moved to Iowa then to Wayne, Nebraska in 1990 where Bob continued his feed sales. In 1997, Bob began selling cars at Clements Motors in Norfolk. This began a lengthy career in car sales, with the move to Columbus in 1998 where he began working for Nielsen Chevrolet. Bob continued his career with the sale of Nielsen’s to Ernst Auto, where he was still employed.

He was an avid Husker football fan and enjoyed his bowling league. Bob was a big supporter at Oborny's Husker Bar where he enjoyed watching sports and selling cars.

Cynthia Hanssen

Cynthia Lynn Hanssen, died unexpectedly at her home in Columbus, NE, on November 13, 2015 at the age of 57.

The family of Cindy Hanssen wishes to express their gratitude for all the acts of kindness shown to them in their time of sorrow and invites you to join them for a luncheon at the Columbus American Legion on December 6th, 2015 from Noon to 4.

Cindy was born November 7th, 1958 in National City, CA, as the oldest of four children to Gary and Carrol (Newbury) Hanssen.

Cindy will be remembered as a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She lived in various places throughout her years, but always seemed to be drawn to the Midwest, where she spent most of her life. Cindy enlisted in the US Army in 1984 and Honorably discharged in 1992. She enjoyed working with several non-profit organizations throughout her life, including various churches and Boy Scouts. Most recently, she served as the President of Harold's Squares Square Dance Club, where she enjoyed socializing and dancing with her friends.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Gary Hanssen; Step-father, Robert Hollander; Sister, Rhonda MacDonald; Daughter, Cassandra Ford; two nieces and her grandparents.

She is survived by her mother, Carrol Hollander; Brothers, Brent (Mary Pat) Hanssen and John (Diana) Hanssen; Daughters, Constance (Jon) Kaehn, Christina Ford (Robert Keller), Candice (Bob) Nosky and Nichole (Randolph III) Rotte; Son, Mark Siegrist (Aliza Menick); 11 grandchildren and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Patricia Gaver

Patricia "Peg" Gaver, 73, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, November 9, 10:30 A.M. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church with Father Mike Keating celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the All Saints Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with a vigil service at 4:00 P.M. Visitation will continue on Monday from 9:00 - 10:15 A.M. also at the funeral home.

Patricia Elizabeth Gregorius Gaver (Peg) was born to James and Patricia (Herrod) Gregorius who were life long-residents of Columbus. Peg continued as a 4th generation Columbus resident, attending St. Bonaventure Schools where she excelled in her studies and extracurricular activities. Always fun loving and a class leader, she was popular and energetic and involved in school activities including the honor society and playing the clarinet in band.

She had an early desire to be a nurse. She worked in high school at St. Mary’s Hospital where she was influenced by OB/GYN hospital sisters. She attended St. Catherine’s School of Nursing and continued an over 40-year career as an RN in Lincoln and Columbus in Nursing at the Columbus Community Hospital.

Peg was a gifted artist: painting, drawing and writing, traveling to Greece and Mexico and the Eastern Shore to paint. She loved the sports of downhill skiing, swimming, ice skating, water skiing, but dearest to her heart was her reading. She supported the Columbus Public Library, and was a volunteer at the Platte County Historical Society. She belonged to the Perpetual Adoration Society for one 20 years. She was an avid shopper, making many friends while practicing “retail therapy.” She listened faithfully to NPR especially Prairie Home Companion and many others.

She is survived by her husband Terry Gaver of 34 years. Her children include Kimberly Neater of Austin TX, Eric Neater of Lincoln, NE, Dain Neater (Melissa) of Lincoln NE, Terri Lynn Gaver-Terzi of Columbus, Troy Gaver (Kim) of Columbus. Sisters Jane Gregorius, Mary Neater (John) and Shelly Beard of Santa Cruz, CA. She was preceded in death by her sister Katherine Lilly.

Her grandchildren include Alivia Neater, Gavyn Neater, Cody Gaver, and Ruya Terzi. Talon Gaver is her only great grandchild. Her many nieces and nephews in Columbus, Texas, Ohio, Illinois and California.

Memorials may be given to The Columbus Public Library, St. Bonaventure Church, or a charity of choice.
