Juanita Randall

Juanita J. Randall, 38, of Pierce, Nebraska, died Monday, July 6, 2015, at Faith Regional Health Center in Norfolk, Nebraska.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 8 at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, 12.5 miles north, rural Columbus, with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and continue on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family.

Juanita Jean (Brandt) Randall was born July 4, 1977, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Carla Jean (Marty) Bechius and the late Richard Bazer; and was raised by parents Kenneth and Eunice (Mott) Brandt. She was baptized in Omaha, and confirmed on April 12, 1992, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, Nebraska. Juanita attended grade school at St. John’s Lutheran School, and graduated from Humphrey Public School, Humphrey, Nebraska, in 1996.

Juanita was married to Steven Randall, Sr. from 2009-2012. She enjoyed family, friends, laughing, telling jokes, coloring intricate patterns, good food, cooking, playing games/cards, and reading a good book.

Gordon Osten

Gordon Osten, 70, of Gilbert, Arizona, (formerly of Columbus) died Sunday, April 26, 2015, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

The funeral service will be Thursday, April 30, 2:00 P.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 14 miles North, with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Thursday from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 1:45 P.M.

Gordon was born March 23, 1945, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Harold and Viola (Janssen) Osten. He attended school at St. John’s and graduated from Columbus High School in 1963. On April 26, 1969, Gordon was united in marriage to Linda Wendt in Columbus. They farmed north of Columbus for 15 years before moving to Arizona where they have resided for the past 30 years, always returning in the summer back to their home in Columbus. Gordon enjoyed family and friends, and liked being outdoors and going boating.

Karen Kaspar Nielsen

Karen Kaspar Nielsen, 73, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be Saturday, January 10, 10:30 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church with Revs. Michael Klatt and Cory Burma officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Saturday from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family.

Karen was born October 7, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, to Edward and Irene (Loseke) Hajek. They moved to Columbus where Karen attended school and graduated from Columbus High School. Karen was married to Robert Kaspar on June 3, 1961. They had three children, Randy, Chris, and Tracy. In 1974, Karen opened Karen’s Bridal Shop in Columbus. On May 17, 1986, Karen was united in marriage to Tony Nielsen in Columbus. Karen continued to own and operate the bridal store until its closing in 1999. Karen then volunteered for the Columbus Chamber of Commerce where she served on the Commodores and on their board. Karen was also involved in the starting of the Downtown Business Association, which she was active in for several years. She then went to work at Pinnacle Bank in 2006 where she was currently serving as their Pinn Club Coordinator. Karen was very active in the community and in 1999 was instrumental in helping refurbish the Santa House in downtown Columbus. In 2000, Karen was Queen Isabella for Columbus Days. She was also very proud of her 15 years in working with the Luther League.

Duane Arthur Brakenhoff

Duane Brakenhoff, 67, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Osceola, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 9 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke's United Church of Christ with Rev. Chris McArdle officiating. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials maybe ge given to St. Luke's United Church of Christ Memorial Fund, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or family choice.

Duane Arthur Brakenhoff was born September 26, 1945, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Arthur and Alice Dora (Neemeyer) Brakenhoff. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church (12.5 North), rural Columbus. Duane attended elementary school at St. John’s Lutheran School and graduated from Columbus High School in 1963. He worked at Nielsen’s Chevrolet in Columbus, then at Viner Chevrolet in Denver, Colorado, while attending Denver Technical College. Duane married Sherri Lynn Mueller on May 15, 1965, at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Columbus. They lived briefly in Denver while both continued their educations; then moved to Lincoln the fall of 1965; where Duane worked for Clark, Enersen, Olson, Burroughs & Thompson. In 1968, they moved to a farm near Columbus, where he worked for his father-in-law, Walter Mueller. In 1979, he began working as an engineering technician for Nebraska Public Power District, retiring from there in 2003; he then worked part-time as a sales associate at Sears until 2005.

Duane was an active member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ where he was an usher, choir member, president and vice-president of the congregation, Sunday School teacher, building fund finance committee chairman, and a member of the search committees. He also served on the District #10 school board. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

Shirley Mueller

Shirley J. Mueller, 88, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Thursday, February 21, 2013, at the Columbus Community Hospital in Columbus, Nebraska.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 27 at 1:00 PM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev.’s Patrick Sparling and Kurt Ebert officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery at 4:00 PM on Wednesday. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Immanuel Lutheran Fellowship Hall and continue on Wednesday from noon until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday at 12:45 PM at the church.

Shirley was born on April 1, 1924, in Platte County, Nebraska, to Arthur and Mathilda (Egger) Heibel. She attended school at Platte County District 2, Christ Lutheran, and graduated from Kramer High School. On November 16, 1941, she was united in marriage to Marvin E. Mueller at Christ Lutheran Church. They moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Marvin worked in an aircraft plant until he was drafted and they moved to Arkansas and later Texas. After he completed his military service, they moved back to Columbus to live on his family farm where Shirley helped him on the farm and they raised their family. Shirley was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, “The Knotty Ladies”, “The Happy Go Lucky Club”, volunteered at the Hospital for 20 years, and worked for the Platte County Election Board. She was a state officer for the Cornhusker Public Power Women's Group, a 4-H leader, and a longtime member of Lamplighters Extension Club. She enjoyed playing cards with groups such as Cousin Club and others.

Sharon Sueper

Sharon Sueper, 54, of Platte Center, Nebraska, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at her home surrounded by family after fighting a courageous battle with colon cancer.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 31 at 10:30 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Cory Burma officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Tuesday at 10:15 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Columbus Hospice, or the donor's choice.

Sharon Sueper was born November 18, 1957, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Melvin and Verona (Hellbusch) Gehring. She was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Platte Center, Nebraska. Sharon attended District 22 and 84 Grade Schools and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1976. Sharon went on to cosmetology school at the Columbus Beauty College after which she practiced in her home. For many years, Sharon worked as a waitress in Columbus at the Elks Country Club, New World Inn, Johnnies Steak House, and Husker House. For the last 15 years, she worked in the accounting department at First National Bank downtown.

Sharon was united in marriage to Tim Sueper on May 24, 1986, at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus. She enjoyed decorating her home, baking, and entertaining family and friends. Sharon’s love for people, especially her husband, children and grandchildren never faltered even as her own health and strength declined. She fought the good fight, lived her life with dignity and grace, and she finished the race with her faith. Her purpose and her life will continue to impact so many.
