Todd Schlender

Todd Anthony Schlender, 39, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Sunday, May 17, 2015, as the result of a motorcycle/auto accident in Grand Island.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 22, at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Patrick Sparling and Rev. Peter Jurchen officiating. Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Friday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Friday at 10:15 AM at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Todd Anthony Schlender was born December 10, 1975, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Dale and Marcia (Hake) Schlender. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Todd graduated from Columbus High School in 1994 and went on to graduate from Milford Technical College. Todd worked at Spady and Ernst Auto in Columbus before moving to Norfolk where he worked for a number of auto firms as a service manager. In 2013, Todd moved to Hastings and in 2014 moved to Grand Island where he was currently employed by Anderson Auto Group as a service manager.

Todd was united in marriage to Mandy Zybach on June 24, 2000, at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Columbus. To this union two children were born, Payton and Maisy. Todd was a NASCAR fan and an avid fan of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Aunts – Denise (Tim) Grein of Walthill, NE; Pam (Lynn) Nitz, Doreen Morinelli, Leanne Hake, and Marlene (Delmar) Spitz all of Columbus, NE; Bonnie Martens of Seward, NE; and Michelle Schlender of Lincoln, NE
Uncle – Dale (Carol Pelan) Hake of Norfolk, NE
Mother of his children – Mandy Schlender of Norfolk, NE
Cats – Tori and Yoshi

Todd was preceded in death by:

Margie B. Maupin

York resident, 76

Margie B. Maupin, 76, of York died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at York. She was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Ottawa County, Kan., to Lee and Thelma (Silver) Smith. She was a longtime cafe owner in Geneva and Edgar, Neb., and was a member of the Eagle's Club Auxiliary in York. She enjoyed working with arts and crafts and being with her family.

She is survived by one son, Larry (Janice) Manire of York and a daughter, Linda K. (Albin) Zentz of Lacey, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Judy, one brother and one sister.

Private family services will be held at a later time. No visitation or viewing. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Peter Quiring

Henderson resident, 82

Peter Quiring, 82 of Henderson, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 in Henderson.

He was born Nov. 9, 1920 in Hamilton County near Henderson to Dietrich and Katherina (Buller) Quiring. He married Estalean Epp on Feb. 24, 1949 in Henderson. Pete was a retired farmer and a member of Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Estalean of Henderson; sons, Harvey (Rhonda) Quiring of Wolbach, and Gary (Beverly) Quiring of Henderson; nine grandchildren and two great-grandsons; sisters, Sara Peters, Katherine (Marvin) Siebert and Marie (Arnold) Siebert all of Henderson; one brother, David (Lavina) Quiring of Henderson.

Preceding him in death were his parents, five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Henderson Health Care Services.

Robert Sullivan

York resident, 78

Robert L. Sullivan, 78, of York died Saturday, April 26, 2003, at York.

He was born June 21, 1924, near Utica to Daniel J. and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Cuda) Sullivan. Robert was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of York. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a former member of the VFW and the York Elks Lodge #1024 in York. He was a current member of the American Legion Post #19 in York. Bob enjoyed woodworking, crafts, gardening and was especially proud of his registered Landrace hogs.

He was married July 28, 1948, at Utica to Wanda Lee Underwood and the lived and farmed east of York until his retirement 15 years ago.

Survivors include his wife Wanda of York; son Robert Jr. of Lake George, Colo., and his daughter Janet and her husband Faron Hines of Thayer; four grandchildren, Travis Sullivan and Grant Sullivan of Lake Geogrge, Colo, Rachel Hines of Lincoln and Jane Hines of Thayer.

Also surviving are his brotehrs, Daniel (Elsie) Sullivan of Waco and Jim (Donna) Sullivan of Waco; his sisters, Carmen (Gerald) Beaver of York and Dorothy (Dan) Kirkpatrick of York; a brother-in-law, Ernest Kozisek of Grand Island; a sister-in-law, Rita Sullivan of Waco; nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his brother Raymond and a sister Delores.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Father Leo Sieker officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Metz Chapel in York. Memorials may be directed to the Church or the donor's favorite charity. Visitation begins after 5 p.m. Monday.

Margaret A. Brockevelt

York resident, 80

Margaret A. Brockevelt, 80, of York died Saturday, April 26, 2003, in York. She was born May 1, 1922, at David City to Worth and Caroline (Medinger) Timms. She graduated from David City High School, attended college and taught school in Bellwood, Neb., for five years.

Margaret married Ernest Brockevelt on May 6, 1946, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City. The couple farmed in the David City and Polk communities for many years before retiring and moving to York. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, St. Joseph's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include four sons, Rich (Pat) Brockevelt of Polk, Ron Brockevelt of Gothenburg, Bob (Barb) Brockevelt of Vermillion, SOD., and Roger Brockevelt of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren; one sister, Mary (Wilfred) Smith of David City; one brother, Fred (Grace) Timms of Carroll, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Metz Chapel with family greeting friends following the rosary. Memorials in care of the family. Metz Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Karen Sue (Lindburg) Adamson

Detroit, Mich., resident, 57

Karen Sue (Lindburg) Adamson, age 57, died April 21, 2004 at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Mich., after a long bout with cancer.

Karen was born to Norma (Larson) and Lewis Lindburg at the Stromsburg Hospital on Jan. 13, 1947. She graduated from Stromsburg High School in 1965.

Her husband, Charles Adamson of 25 years, survives Karen. She leaves behind 2 step-children, Lori Brogan and Adam Givens; one granddaughter, Kaylee Brogan; mother, Norma Lindburg; 2 sisters, Faye (Lindburg) Cockle and Judy (Lindburg) Hedrick; several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and nephews. All of whom will miss her dearly.

After graduation Karen moved to Detroit, Mich., and went to work for Construction Association of Michigan for 35 years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, crafts, antiques, her pets, traveling and most of all riding her motorcycle with her husband. She was an avid collector of cookie jars and clocks.

Funeral services were at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home Monday, April 26, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Jennifer Saad officiating.

Helen Edith Samuels

Polk resident, 92

Helen Edith Samuels died at York General Hospital on Tuesday, April 27, 2004. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 1st at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Polk with Revs. Richard Melano and John Dale officiating. Visitation will be Friday, April 30th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Solt Funeral Home in Polk. Burial is in the Arborville Cemetery near Polk. Memorials are suggested to the Polk United Methodist Church or the Polk Public Library. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Helen was born on November 27, 1911 at Wymore to Carl J. and Loyette L. (Kinney) McCoy. Her family lived in Wymore until she was six, they moved to south of York and then to Benedict before moving to Polk in 1926. Helen graduated from Polk High School in 1929 and then attended York College for two years. She taught in York County rural schools for three years. On September 3, 1934, Helen E. McCoy and Mervin Samuels were united in marriage in Polk. They farmed and fed cattle on their farm five miles north of Polk. In 1961, they moved to Polk. Mervin died on November 27, 1981. Helen continued to live in Polk until moving to the Midwest Covenant Home in 1998.

As a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, Helen was also a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Willanna Chapter 321 for over 50 years and had held many offices, the Polk Women's Club, and the Polk Country Women. Her many special interests included reading, sewing, growing flowers, genealogy, and spending time with her family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory are one son-Vern and Mary Jane Samuels of Polk; one daughter-Anita and Mike Norquest of Polk; six grandchildren-Doug Norquest, Brian and Luann Norquest, Steve and Tami Norquest, Jason and Lora Norquest, Shane and Nicolle Samuels, and Lisa Bedient; seven great grandchildren-Brandon Norquest, Trent Norquest, Chelsea McIlravy, Jackie McIlravy, Charla Norquest, Jacob Norquest, and Audrey Norquest; and two sisters-Gladys Andrews of Polk and Bula and Don Springer of Belleville, Illinois; brother-in-law Cliff Penrose of Godfrey, Illinois.

James D. Fuller

Ogallala resident, 64

James Dean Fuller, 64, of Ogallala, was born Dec. 17, 1938, in York and died Thursday, April 24, 2003.

He was the son of the late Herman and Mary (Cartwright) Fuller.

He owned his own siding business and was a member of the Elks Club.

Survivors include his daughter, Pam (Steve) Tarzdale of Omaha; brother, Robert (Dorothy) Fuller of Lincoln; sisters, Sandy Spencer of York, Betty (Don) Hennings of Georgetown, Texas, and Patty (John) Holm of Gothenburg.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Polly Fuller.

Graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be sent to the family.

James Jackson

Grand Island resident, 67

James E. Jackson, 67, of Grand Island, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Curtis Holzworth officiating.

He was born Jan. 7, 1937, at York to Donald and Dorothy Jackson. He served in the United States Army.

Survivors of the immediate family include his son, Rod Jackson of Crossville, Tenn.; a daughter, Lena C. Joslin of Omaha; mother, Dorothy Walters of Grand Island; brother, Robert Jackson of Lincoln; two sisters, Dona Kaliff of York and Bonnie Madison of Freeman, Mo.; and 6 grandchildren. Preceded by daughter, Connie Chavez; father; brother, Ivan "Gene" and nephew, Michael Kaliff.

Marian Wing Rowley

New Port Richey, Fla., resident, 99

Marian Wing Rowley, 99, died Easter Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Tandem Nursing Home in New Port Richey, Fla. She was born in York June 22, 1904 to Frank and Anna Wing and was raised in the York area.

Surviving are a son, John Rowley Jr. of Florida; daughter, Alyce Graefe of Florida; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Preceded by her husband, John W. Rowley and a daughter, Marilyn, both in 1988.

Graveside services were held April 20 at Burlington, Iowa.

Hubert Lou Zieg

York resident
Hubert Lou Zieg, 85, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in York.

He was born on Dec. 22, 1917, in York, the second child of George and Anna (Ahlgren) Zieg. He graduated from York High School in 1935. On May 28, 1938, he was married to Sylvia Axtell in Papillion. They celebrated 64 years, 11 months of marriage together.

Hubert worked as a carpenter for Anderson Lumber in York for several years out of high school and then began his own construction business. He owned the Zieg Tank business and painted and serviced water towers throughout Nebraska. He then changed his business focus to construction of homes during which time he developed and built the Edison addition as well as North Circle Drive addition.

He had great pride in the town of York and served the city and county with countless hours and energy. He served 12 years as city councilman and served as Mayor of York. He then served as York County Commissioner for eight years. He was elected to the First Federal Board in 1976 and served for 12 years. He was a past president of the Izaak Walton League, past president of the Nebraska League of Municipalities and served on the board of Region V Mental Retardation Services.

Hubert always loved a good cigar, a sporty hat and a humorous story. His mechanical abilities were respected and appreciated by many as he always could "rig" something so it would work better. He was never too busy to help a neighbor with a willing hand. He loved his hobby of radio controlled model airplanes and was a long standing member of the Thunderbirds.

He will be missed by his wife Sylvia of York; four children, Ed (Nancy) Zieg of West Lynn, Ore., Tim (Linda) Zieg of York and Dr. George Zieg and Michelle Zieg, both of Omaha; five grandchildren, Cary (Laura) Zieg of Lincoln, Craig Zieg of Houston, Texas, Michael Zieg of Denver, Colo., Jason Pardun of Oxford, Miss., and Shannon (James) Carrier of Darien, Conn.; four great-grandchildren and his brother, Robert (Mary) Zieg of West Palm Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a young brother Charles, and a granddaughter, Gina.

Memorial services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in York with the Rev. Harry Brown officiating. Private family interment. There will be no visitation or viewing as the body was cremated.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or to Hospice of Nebraska. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of arrangements.
