Carroll H. Hansen

Seward resident, 89

Carroll H. Hansen, 89, of Seward died on April 29, 2003. He was born on July 11, 1913.

He was a retired farmer from the Goehner area and a member of V.F.W. Post 4755 in Seward. He was a former member of Holmes Post No. 78, American Legion, in Beaver Crossing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Soren and Caroline Hansen; sister, Helen Dillon; brothers, Bernard, Clarence, George, Gerald, Martin and Woodrow Hansen.

Survivors include his sister, Thelma Dehn of Waterville, Minn.; three nieces, Elaine Sparks of Dana Point, Calif., Judy Lewis of Westminster, Colo., Carol Welsch of Broomfield, Colo.; four nephews, Larry Hansen of Utica, Daniel Hansen of Castle Rock, Colo., Steven Hansen of Broomfield, Colo., Margin Hansen of Beaumont, Calif.; sister-in-law, Frances Hansen of Broomfield, Colo.

Signing of the Rmembrance Book will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2003, at the Wood-Zabka Funeral Home in Seward. The body will be cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Friedens United Church of Christ in Goehner with the Rev. Gwen Hurst Anderson as officiant. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery in Goehner with full military honors by VFW Post No. 4755 of Seward. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice in care of the family.

Elsie K. Thiessen

Henderson resident, 90

Elsie K. Thiessen, 90, of Henderson died Thursday, May 1, 2003, in Henderson. Services are scheduled for Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Henderson. Metz Mortuary in Henderson is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Walsh

York resident, 80

Rose M. Walsh, age 80 of York, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at York. She was born May 19, 1923 at Lomax, NE to A. Laurence and Lauretta (Neville) Conroy. She was married to George A. Walsh at York on April 15, 1952. Rose was a Registered Nurse, having graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing at Grand Island and spent her entire career at the York General Hospital. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters.

Rose is survived by her son Steve (Betty) Walsh of Omaha, 2 daughters, Marilyn Hilfiker of Denver and Jacqueline (Don) Huldt of Grand Island.

Twenty grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers; James (Grace) Conroy of Lincoln and John (Gladys) Conroy and Paul (Bette) Conroy all of Oconto, NE and one sister, Elizabeth Conroy of York. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, son Dennis, daughter Barbara and brothers Louis & Laurence.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 10:00 am at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church at York with the Rev. Leo Seiker officiating. Rosary services will be held at the church on Friday at 7:00 pm. Visitation will begin Friday at Metz Mortuary.

Burial will be in the St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the St. Joseph's Building Fund or the donors favorite charity. Metz Mortuary of York is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Muller

Wakefield resident, 89

Helen M. Muller, 89, of Wakefield, NE died on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at the Wakefield Health Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 7, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield, Pastor Jerome Cloninger will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Bressler-Munderloh Funeral Home in Wakefield. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Wakefield Cemetery.

Helen Marie (Oberg) Muller was born January 28, 1917 south of Wakefield to Pete Nelson Oberg (P.N. Oberg) and Hilma Ingra (Nelson) Oberg. She moved north of Wakefield at the age of 2 (Allen, NE) and attended Rose Hill Country School. Helen graduated from Wakefield High School in 1933 at the age of 16.

Helen attended Wayne State College one semester and attended Business School in Sioux City, Iowa. She was the bookkeeper for Farmers Union in Wakefield (dry goods, grocery and farm supply store) for eight years from 1938 to 1946.

February 6, 1946 she married Marvin H. Muller at Salem Lutheran Church in Wakefield. they farmed north of Wakefield (Concord) until 1973 when they moved to town. Marvin died May 7, 1991. Helen moved to the Wakefield Health Care Center September 10, 2001.

Helen was a life long member of Salem Lutheran Church being baptized in 1917 and confirmed in 1933. Helen volunteered for many things in the church and community. She held many offices in church groups, and was Hospital Care Center Auxiliary and a 4-H leader for many years. She loved caring for her roses and sewing of any kind.

Helen is survived by her three children and their spouses, Gerald and Kathy Muller of Wakefield, Eileen and Jim Krumbach of Shelby, NE and Carolyn and Dave Sick of Rogersville, MO. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Sisters Edna Gustafson and Esther Oberg and brother Harold and his wife Pat Oberg, sister-in-law Elsie Muller and brother-in-law Francis and his wife Vivian Muller, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marvin, sister and brother-in-law Verna and Lawrence Fischer, brothers, Alvin and Paul and brother-in-law Berneal Gustafson.

Elsie Thiessen

Henderson, 90
Elsie Katherine Peters Thiessen, 90, of Henderson died May 1, 2003. Elsie was a resident in the Henderson Care Center.

She was born in Henderson on Oct. 10, 1912, to Jacob and Katherine Siebert Peters. When she was two years old, her family moved to Langham, Saskatchewan, to homestead. This is where Elsie grew up and attended school through the sixth grade. As a young adult, she attended Dalmeny Bible School for two winter sessions to satisfy her desire to gain a better understanding of the Bible.

On June 14, 1938, she was united in marriage to John T. Thiessen, a farmer from Mountain Lake, Minn. This union was blessed with two sons, Eldon and Harvey. They moved to the Henderson area in 1948 where they soon began farming again.

Elsie was a homemaker and helped John with the farm work in Mountain Lake, Minn., and in the Henderson area until 1967, when they retired to York. She provided home health care, nursing home care, and worked as a baker in several restaurants in York, until their move to Henderson in 1982.

Elsie has been an active member of the Faith Evangelical Bible Church of Henderson.

Preceding her in death are her husband, John T. Thiessen; her parents; four brothers, Edward, John, William, and Jacob; and one sister, Elizabeth.

She is survived by one brother, Gustav Peters of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; one sister, Esther Mierau of Langham, Saskatchewan; two sons, Eldon and his wife Anita of Topeka, Kan.; Harvey and his wife Donna of Piedmont, S.D.; four grandchildren, Michelle Thiessen Goertzen of Des Moines, Iowa, Stuart Thiessen of Des Moines, Iowa, Lamonica Thiessen Gruen of Topeka, Kan., and Tyler Thiessen of York, and five great-grandsons, Daniel and Stephen Thiessen and Josiah, Matthias, and Abram Gruen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 5, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the Faith Evangelical Bible Church in Henderson with the Rev. Mike Fink officiating. Private burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2003. The family will be present to greet visitors from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to Grace Missions of Henderson or Signs of Grace Deaf Church of Des Moines, Iowa, in care of Metz Mortuary. Metz Mortuary in Henderson is in charge of arrangements.***

Gertrude Peterson

Osceola resident, 93

Gertrude Elizabeth Peterson, 93, of Osceola died Friday, April 30, 2004 at Good Samaritan Center in Osceola.

Gertrude was born August 20, 1910 in Dixon, NE to Durwin Walter and Bessie Gertrude (Shadley) Adair. She graduated from South High School in Omaha and attended college classes at Kearney and Nebraska Wesleyan. She taught school in Nance and Polk counties.

She married L. Merle Peterson December 26, 1937 at her parents' home in Osceola. They lived in Albion, Fullerton, Long Beach CA and Osceola before moving to Silver Creek in 1947, where she was associated with her husband in the locker until 1972. Gertrude moved to Shelby in 2000 and had resided at the Good Samaritan Center since September 2003.

While a resident of Silver Creek she was active on the Low Housing Committee, in Senior Citizens Club and United Methodist Women, where she served as treasurer for 22 years. A former member of the Shelby United Methodist Church and participated in activities at the Shelby Senior Center. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, reading and going to University of Nebraska football games.

Survivors include two daughters, Myrla (Jan) Grossnicklaus of Shelby and Jane (Richard) Spencer of Carlisle, IA; four grandchildren, Janice Cram of Aurora, Jay Grossnicklaus of Las Vegas NV, Shawna Fritz of Des Moines IA, Craig Spencer of Fairborn OH; three great grandchildren, Dillon and Madison Fritz and Lauren Spencer; nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband and a sister, Marie Perry.

Funeral services were Monday, May 3. at the United Methodist Church in Shelby with Rev J. Green officiating. Kim Voss as organist and Rita Houdersheldt as vocalist. Pallbearers were Craig Spencer, Kelly Fritz, Alan Cram, Kenneth Reed, Randy Peterson and Kevin Abbott. Burial was in the Osceola Cemetery,

Martha Louise Ida Meyer

Broken Bow resident, 92

Martha Louise Ida Meyer, 92 years of age from Broken Bow, formerly of Minden, Nebraska died on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Facility in Broken Bow.

Martha was born on April 6, 1912 to William and Anna (Lieske) Hubert at Upland, Nebraska. She was baptized into the Lutheran Faith on May 5, 1912 and confirmed her faith on June 24, 1926 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Upland. Martha grew up on a farm near Upland and graduated from Upland High School in 1929. She then attended Kearney State College and taught in one room country schools for seven years. Martha was married to John Meyer on June 4, 1936 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Upland. To this union was born Roger in 1938 and JoAnn in 1940. After Martha and John were married they farmed four miles south of Minden and joined the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church. From 1947 until 1965 they farmed and raised their family three miles east of Upland.

They retired and moved into Minden in 1965 and joined the St. Paul Lutheran Church. After leaving their home in Minden they spent two years at the Bethany Home Assisted Living and the lasttwo years at Heritage Hall in Jenny M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.

Martha was a perfectionist in everything she did. She loved teaching and all her life received accolades from her former students. She was a great tutor to her children all though their grade and high school years. Martha taught Sunday School, conducted Sunday School Christmas and Memorial Day Programs and was a 4-H Leader. She was a charter member o f the O.L.D. Extension Club and served as Franklin County Home Extension Chairman and was on the county extension board. Martha loved flowers, was an avid gardener, quilter, and did a lot of embroidering. She enjoyed sharing her flowers and needlework with relatives and friends.

Survivors include her husband, John of Broken Bow, 1 son, Roger H. Meyer M.D. and his wife, Patricia of Utica, Nebraska; 1 daughter, JoAnn C. Kottmeyer and her husband Fred Kottmeyer D.D.S. of Broken Bow; 5 grandchildren, Cindy Buresh and her husband, Nick of Lincoln, Paul Meyer and his wife, Vicki of Round Rock, TX, Dan Meyer and his wife, Heather of Lincoln, NE, Jared Kottmeyer of Broken Bow and Evan Kottmeyer and his wife, Jessica of Lincoln; 11 great grandchildren, Dayne, Ellie Ruth and Jake Buresh of Lincoln, Nathan and Holly Meyer of Round Rock, TX, Trenton, Kasha and Shayla Meyer of Lincoln and Kendra, Kera and Kenly Kottmeyer of Lincoln. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Emma Detlefs and Elsie Jensen and brother Herman Hubert Jr.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with Reverend Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be in the Fredericksburg Lutheran Cemetery south of Minden. Visitation was at the

Layton Funeral Home in Minden on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-8 p.m.

Russel Johnson

York resident, 79

Russel Johnson, 79, of York, formerly of McPherson, Kan., passed away on Wednesday morning, May 7, 2003 at the York General Hospital in York.

Russel was born on Sept. 12, 1923, at Lindsborg, Kan., to Carl and Elsie (Enquist) Johnson. He was united in marriage to Joan M. Jordan on Jan. 23, 1948, at McPherson, Kan.

Russel was a US Army veteran of World War II, and was in the dry cleaning business for thirty years in McPherson. After moving to York in 1967, Russel was employed by the City of York as Maintenance Man at the York Community Center, a position that he held for 15 years prior to his retirement in 1987. At the time of his failing health, he had been a caregiver to Mike Rystrom in York. Russel was a member of Bolton American Legion Post #19 at York and enjoyed making dala horses and drawing caricatures of people.

Survivors include two sons: Steve Johnson of York, and Cecil (and his wife, Kathy) Johnson of Baton Rouge, La.; two granddaughters: Melissa Griffen and Amber (and her husband, Randy) Wong; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Broderick, all of Baton Rouge, La.; one grandson, Ronald Akins; one brother-in-law, Kenneth Lindblom of McPherson, Kan.; one sister-in-law, Frances Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Eileen Rystrom. Russel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan in September of 1984; two brothers (Ferman and Terry Johnson); one sister (June Lindblom); and one great-grandson (Christopher Griffen).

It was Russel's wishes that his body be cremated following his death. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be made in care of the family. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Roland C. Oberle

Central City resident, 82

Roland C. Oberle, 82, of Central City, died on Friday, May 7, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be Monday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City with Father Nelson Newman officiating.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 9th from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Roland was born on January 10, 1922, at Verdigre to Claude Bryan and Cecelia Rose (Stoikes) Oberle. He grew up in northeast Nebraska and attended country school near Verdigre and Verdigre High School.

After completing his schooling, he farmed with his family until entering the U.S. Army and serving from October 17, 1942 until January 26, 1946.

On June 4, 1946, Roland C. Oberle and Verena M. Thunker were united in marriage at Crofton. They farmed in the Coleridge area for ten years. Roland then drove truck for nine years, living in various communities in Nebraska. In 1970, he became manager for Moormans Mfg. Company and they moved to Central City. Roland retired from this position in 1984.

Roland was a member of the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City. He enjoyed working on anything mechanical, he and Verena enjoyed camping and have traveled all over the United States and for many years after retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Arizona; but his greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Verena of Central City; daughter-Marilyn Coffey of Billings, Montana; sons Dean and Linda Oberle of Holdrege and Roger Oberle and Adrienne Feldman of Evergreen, Colorado; and daughter Karla and Dale Broekemeier of Aurora; one brother-Raymond and Lois Oberle of Norfolk; nine grandchildren-Kim Coffey, Michele and Mark Grant, Russell and Robyn Coffey, Jackie and Nick Theysohn, Dean "Joe" and Angela Oberle, Jr., Megan Oberle, Matt, Joe, and Tyson Broekemeier; and four great grandchildren-Lauren and Sam Theysohn and Paul and Devyn Johnson.

Francis Doremus

Stromsburg resident, 94

Francis H. Doremus, 94, of Stromsburg, formerly of Polk, died May 7, 2003, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Swede Home Calvary Lutheran Church near Stromsburg. The Rev. Donna Durrette will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Elizabeth "Bette" Hudson

Utica resident, 65

Elizabeth "Bette" Josephine Hudson, 65, of Utica, formerly of Stafford, Kan., died May 8, 2004 in Seward.

She was born Nov. 19, 1938 in Hays, Kan., to Harry J. and Severina (Liekam) Dreiling. She graduated from Stafford High School in 1958 and in 1971 from the Colorado Beauty Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. She held a Kansas Cosmetology license.

Bette married Ray D. Hudson Nov. 28, 1986 in Wichita, Kan. and in 1987 they moved from Stafford to Nebraska and have been residents of Utica since 1995.

Bette was a member of St. John The Apostle Catholic Church in St. John, Kan., the Daughters of the American Legion and was a former employee of Leisure Homestead Care Center in Stafford and Metromail in Seward.

Her loves were quilting, woodcrafts, gardening and spending time with her great-grandson, Tristan See.

Surviving are her husband, Ray of Utica; sons, Dale E. (Nancy) Johnson and Byron R. (Mary) Johnson, all of Yucca Valley, Calif.; daughters, Connie L. Hawyer and Robert L. Cain of Pratt, Kan. and Ann (Pete) Graff of Lees Summit, Mo.; sisters, Shirley (Bob) Rowlee of Omaha, Jesse (Norman) Shields and Mary Long and Warren Applebee of Lincoln, Carole (Gerald) Schmidt of Sylvia, Kan., and Debby Lewis of Glendale, Ariz.; brother, John (Flo) Dreiling of Moorhead, Minn.; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Evadene Hudson of Stafford, Kan., and a host of friends. Preceded by her parents, Harry and Severina Dreiling.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at Minnis Funeral Chapel in Stafford, Kan. Inurnment will be in Stafford Cemetery. Memorials in Nebraska may be directed to Memorial Health Care System, 300 North Columbia Ave., Seward, Neb. 68434 or Donor's Choice in care of Wood-Zabka Funeral Home, 410 Jackson Avenue, Seward, Neb. 68434.
