Avis M. Beckman

Stromsburg resident, 84

Avis M. Beckman, 84 years old of Stromsburg died Thursday, May 6, 2004 as a result of a car accident.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 10 at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. Rev. Richard Melano will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Mrs. Beckman was born April 17, 1920 in Stromsburg to Chester and Ruth (Johnson) Underhill. She attended schools in Stromsburg graduating in 1937 from Stromsburg High School. She worked for several years as a bookkeeper for a local business and in San Diego, California.

On March 23, 1940 she married Haorld (Beck) Beckman in Rockport, Missouri, beginning married life in San Diego, California. They returned to Stromsburg in early 1946.

Her husband, Beck passed away in September of 1984.

Mrs. Beckman was a member of the Stromsburg United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Mary Circle and Methodist Bead Ladies. She was a member of Chapter AR, P.E.O., and served on the Stromsburg Public Library Board for many years.

She enjoyed her family and many friends, music, reading, cooking and nature.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law Timothy and Rebecca (Becky Stark) Beckman of Stromsburg; one daughter and son-in-law Polly and Charles Downing of Wichita, Kansas; grandsons, Scott Beckman and Julianne of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Chad Beckman of Lincoln; Ryan Downing of Wichita, Kansas; a brother, Duane Underhill and his wife Artherene, three nieces and nephew all of Omaha and many special cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Ruth Underhill; her husband, Harold Beckman Jr. and one brother, Ronald Underhill.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Minnick

Stromsburg resident, 88

Dorothy M. Minnick, 88 years old of Stromsburg died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at York General Hospital as a result of a car accident.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 10 at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg. Rev. Keith Brozek will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Mrs. Minnick was born November 16, 1915 to Edwin A. and Edith (Bailey) Jones in Grand Island. She attended Grand Island Elementary Schools and graduated from Grand Island High School. She then attended and graduated from Grand Island School of Cosmetology. She worked as a beautician in Grand Island and Schuyler.

On February 25, 1940 she married Kenneth Christensen in Seward. They moved to Stromsburg where she continued to work.

Her husband, Kenneth died July 8, 1977.

On April 23, 1981 she married Roy Minnick at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg.

Her husband, Roy died November 20, 2000.

She was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, Chapter AR, P.E.O. and the Senior Center.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, cooking, yard work and flowers.

Survivors include, three grandchildren, Kirsten (Lyle) Sukup of Verdigre, Andrew (Barb) Monson of Lincoln and Tisha (Todd) Holsten of Grand Island; 8 great-grandchildren, Jenna, Devin, Kassandra, Hannah, Carter, Grace, Hunter and Forrest.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Christensen and Roy Minnick, infant son, George Christensen, one daughter, Metha Monson.

Memorials suggested to family choice.

Cherri Hose

York resident, 54

Cherri A. Hose, 54, of York, died Sunday, May 11, 2003 at York.

Cherri was born on Oct. 25, 1948 at Lewellen, to Donald W. and Ellen L. (Green) Suit. She was a 1966 graduate of the Garden County High School at Oshkosh, and received her bachelor's degree from Kearney State College.

On July 18, 1970, she was married to Robert H. Hose in Kearney. Cherri taught high school Home Economics at Bushnell and later in Lincoln. In 1981, Cherri and Bob came to York where Cherri worked as the office manager for Bob Hose State Farm Insurance office. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York and the Altar Society.

Cherri is survived by her husband Bob of York and their daughter Heather Hose of Lincoln. Also surviving are her mother Ellen Suit of Oshkosh; brother Jim and his wife Cathy of Bozeman, Mont.; brother-in-law Dan and his wife Debbie Hose of Lincoln and six nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her father Donald.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 14, at 10 a.m. at the

St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Fr. Leo Seiker. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery of York. Rosary services will be held on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Metz Chapel in York. Visitation will begin Monday at 5 p.m. Memorials may be directed to York Adopt-A-Pet.

Arlene Kay Knott

McCook resident, 45

Arlene Kay Knott, 45, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born June 16, 1957, to Sam R. and Katherine (Quiring) Janzen at Henderson.

She graduated from Henderson High School in 1975. She attended Grace University in Omaha for two years and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1980. She taught music at Lincoln Christian High School from 1980-1983. She received her master's degree in music education from UNL in 1989. She taught 35-40 piano students each week and home schooled her children until just this past year. She was actively involved with leading Ladies Bible Studies.

She married James Knott in Lincoln on May 31, 1980.

She was preceded in death by her father in March of 1997.

Survivors include: her husband, James and children, Joshua, Michael, Kayla and Hannah, all of McCook; her mother, Katherine Siebert and husband Marvin of Henderson; three brothers, Ronald Janzen and wife Joyce of Henderson, Dale Janzen and wife Sue of Whitewater, Kan., and Kenneth Janzen and wife Brenda of Henderson.

Funeral services will be today, Monday, May 12, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the Evangelical Free Church, 602 East 14th St., in McCook with Pastors Bruce Lester and Dale Janzen officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, May 13, at the Mennonite Cemetery at Henderson. (Take the I-80 exit to Henderson, go 4 1/2 miles south and 3 1/2 miles east.)

Memorials may be given in her name to Grace University or Community Home Health and Hospice. Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Ratzlaff

York resident, 85

Evelyn Ratzlaff, age 85 of York, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004 at York. She was born Sept. 11, 1919 at Waco to William and Ida (Pijan) Dobberstein. On January 11, 1948, she married Robert L. Ratzlaff in York. Evelyn worked for many years at the May Floral Co. in York and later at Patty's Hallmark.

She is survived by her two sons; Dennis and his wife Terry Grobe of Waltham, Mass. And Rodney and his wife Patricia of Hastings, Neb.; grandchildren, Lance of Hastings, Amber (Joe) Kuphal of Clinton, Iowa and Julia Ratzlaff of Waltham, Mass.; great-granddaughter Abigail Kuphal of Clinton, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, two brothers and her sister.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 6th at 2:00 pm at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Tim Marshall officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 pm Saturday at Metz. Memorials may be directed to the family or the Diabetes Assn. Metz Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Timothy Gene Bailey

McCool Jct., 44

Timothy Gene Bailey, age 44 of McCool Junction, died Saturday, October 16, 2004 at his home in McCool. He was born at York on April 18, 1960 to Claude E. "Gene" and Linda L. (Young) Bailey. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at McCool. Tim was a 1978 graduate of York High School. He farmed for many years with his father Gene and in 2002 quit farming and started at York General Hospital in respiratory therapy with the home medical equipment department. He was married to Rebecca Hull on February 14, 1995 at York. Tim received the "Caring Kind Award" from York General Hospital in August of 2004. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially taking his son to the river and attending Scarlett's performances.

Tim is survived by his wife Rebecca of McCool Jct.; his daughter Scarlett of Lincoln and his son Blake of McCool; 2 brothers, Terry (Sally) Bailey and Kyle (Pattie) Bailey all of York; his grandfather Boyd Young of York; niece Sarah Bailey and nephews Will, Griffin & Jac Bailey; step-mother Delores Bailey of York; in-laws Harold (Sue) Hull of Douglas and Karen Stubendick of Unadilla; aunt Phyllis (Neil) West of McCool; 2 brother-in-laws, Jerry (Renee) Hull of Hastings and Russell Hull of Palmyra; 2 sister-in-laws, Jeanie (Randy) Steinkuhler of Unadilla and JoDee Semin of Bennett; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Michelle Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation will begin Tuesday at noon. Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.

Phyllis M. Miller

McCool Jct. resident, 74

Phyllis M. Miller age 74 of McCool Junction, Ne., died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at York. She was born July 25, 1930 at York to Roy and Ida (St. John) Gaast and was a member of First Lutheran Church in McCool Jct. Phyllis was employed at the McCool Jct. Post Office for many years and enjoyed writing poetry, reading and doing arts and crafts.

On May 26, 1948 she was married to Boyd Miller at Hastings, Ne.

She is survived by her husband Boyd of McCool Jct., two sons, Michael and his wife Robin Miller of Minot, ND and Daniel and his wife Leona Miller of McCool Jct. Three daughters, Dixe and her husband Larry Sanmann of Alamogordo, NM and Patricia Hager of Columbus, OH. Barbara Deonier and her special friend William Horne of Dalzell, SC.

Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, Destiny and Tina Miller of Minot, ND, Lacey, Jamie, Kira Miller of McCool Jct., Renee and her husband Christopher Padilla of Albuquerque, NM, Laurie Sanmann of Dallas, TX, Jennifer and her husband Keith McCool of Ft. Pierce, FL, Karry and her husband Jerry Thacker of Columbus, OH, Machell hager of Columbus, OH, Robin and her husband Eric Fajardo of Yigo, Guam and Mark Deonier of Sumter, SC; nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the First Lutheran Church in McCool Jct., with the Reverend Michelle Olson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery east of McCool Jct. Memorials may be directed to York General Hearthstone or to the First Lutheran Church in McCool Jct. Visitation begins after 1:00 p.m. Friday.

Mary G. Salchow

Kearney resident, 94

Mary G. Salchow, 94, of Kearney died Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 14, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 17, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney with Pastor Dean Pofahl officiating. Further services will be held at 3 p.m. at Polk Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kurt Letcher officiating and burial at the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney.

She was born March 23, 1910 in Stromsburg to Robert and Iva (Moore) Burke. She grew up in the Stromsburg area and graduated from Polk High School in 1928. She married Ernest Salchow and they lived in Arborville where she taught the seventh and eighth grades in Benedict. Her husband died in 1963 and she moved to Polk in 1964. She graduated from Kearney State College in 1967 and moved to Kearney in 1987 where she had since resided.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the ladies aid in Polk. She was a former member of the Polk Library Board and enjoyed reading and painting.

Surviving are a son, Carl Salchow of Kearney; sister, Clara Johnson of California; granddaughter, Shelby Whetstine of Kearney; great-grandchildren, Conner Salchow, Holly Whetstine and Chandler Whetstine; and daughter-in-law, Penny Salchow of Kearney. Preceded by her husband in 1963; one brother and two sisters.

Harold J. Matthews

York resident, 90

Harold J. Matthews, 90, of York, died at York. He was born April 16, 1914 in McCool Junction to Richard & Helena (Menke) Matthews. Harold married Medora Ellen Harriger June 28, 1943 in Friend, NE. Harold was a World War II veteran serving in the 134th Infantry Division earning two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, VFW, Knights of Columbus and Elks Club. He was the owner of Matthews' Motor Service in York until his retirement in 1982.

Harold is survived by his wife, Medora Ellen Matthews of York. Son, Allen (Mary) Matthews of Columbus, NE. Grandchildren, Stephen Matthews of Omaha, NE and Brandon Frideres of Grand Island, NE. 4 Great Grandchildren, Sisters, Jeanette Nickel of Kearney, NE and Mildred Judkins of Grand Island, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Richard Matthews, sister, Ann Nora Kerns.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 21, 2004 at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with the Rev. Leo Seiker officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday with rosary services at 7:30 at Metz Mortuary. Burial at the Exeter Cemetery, Exeter, NE. Metz Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Blanche Schofield

Anchorage, Alaska resident, 85

Blanche Schofield died March 24, 2004 at her home in Anchorage, Alaska.

She was born Aug. 26, 1918 in Stromsburg, NE to Eli and Isle Johnson. She attended schools in Stromsburg and graduated in 1936.

She married Tom Schofield Oct. 1, 1945. They moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where they homesteaded. Blanche and Tom had wonderful adventures and shared their lives with other "pioneers". Blanche worked in the airline industry several years and enjoyed traveling and taking cruises. She and her sister, Merna Nowell of Anchorage, traveled often and visited their Nebraska families several times.

Surviving are her sisters, Merna Nowell of Anchorage, Rogene Dickson, Shirley Morris, Coral Boden, Wanda Larson and sister-in-law, ReaMae Johnson, many relatives and friends.

Preceding her were her parents; husband, Tom; brothers, Clifton, Curtis and Rolland Johnson and sister, Elnore Hanson.

Memorial services were held at the Christ Congregational Church in Anchorage, Alaska, Thursday, April 1.
