Percy Wayne Stutzman

Beaver Crossing resident, 75

Percy Wayne Stutzman of Beaver Crossing, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, April 11, 2004 at the age of 75 years 11months and 12 days. He was born on April 29, 1928 to Manno and Maggie Stutzman at the family farm by Milford, Nebraska. Percy attended country school until the end of the 8th grade when he started working for his family and helping relatives and neighbors with their farming.

Besides farming, Percy held many jobs throughout his lifetime. Among them were Western Electric and Lincoln Gas. He also hauled anhydrous and was a trucker hauling cattle. Later Percy worked for Abel Construction and helped build Interstate 80. He worked for and retired from Walker Manufacturing in Seward after 15 1/2 years. After retiring, Percy drove the escort car for moving trailer houses. Together with his wife, Ruth they mowed cemeteries. Percy also had a disc sharpening business for over 40 years.

Percy enjoyed collecting old cars and tractors, gardening with his great grandson, Shannon, working and helping others whenever he was needed and in any way he could. He loved visiting with his many friends and relatives.

Percy married Ruth Sanburn on August 19, 1950 in Friend, Nebraska. Together they had 3 sons and 1 daughter. Percy is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Beaver Crossing; children and spouses, Michael and Brenda Stutzman and Alan Stutzman all of Beaver Crossing and Diane and David Hobson of York.

9 grandchildren and their spouses: Veronica Bonds, York; Adam and Dawn Stutzman, Waco; Brian Stutzman, McCool Jct; Jason Stutzman, Utica; Abby Stutzman, Beaver Crossing; Nicole and Scott Sherer, Lincoln; Leslie and Kenny Red, Omaha; Jessica and Shane Gorski, Lincoln and Timothy Eulberg, Lincoln.

10 great-grand children: Kendra, Katelyn, Kayla and Dylan Bonds of York; Caleb, Christopher and Chelsea Stutzman, Waco; Shannon Gorski, Lincoln and Kelynn and Jamin Cyr of Allen.

Siblings and spouses: Rose Stutzman, Milford; Elda and Cecil Shettler of Wellman, Iowa; Morris and Connie Stutzman of Milford.

Sister-in-laws: Ruby (Art) Stutzman of Albany, Oregon; Letha Rardin (Richard), Milford; Erma (Rolland) Stofer, Crete; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edwin and Elaine Sanburn of Dorchester.

Numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Percy is preceded in death by his parents, Manno and Maggie Stutzman, brothers: Clarence, Walter, Clayton, Roy and Art Stutzman. Sister: Mabel Beckler. Son: Terry Stutzman.

Visitation will be 04-13-04 from 9am-9pm at Lauber/Moore Funeral Home in Beaver Crossing. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Wed. 04-14-04 at the United Methodist Church in Beaver Crossing. Burial will be followed at the Beaver Crossing Cemetery.

R. Howard Anderson

York Resident 79

Howard Anderson passed away early Sunday morning, April 18, 2004 at the York General Hospital in York. Howard was born on May 1, 1924 at Wilsonville, NE to C.R. and Mary (Sherrard) Anderson. He served in the United Staes Navy from June of 1943 until May 1946, part of which time he spent in the South Pacific during World War II. Howard was united in marriage to Dorothy L. Millett on March 8, 1946 at Lincoln, NE He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1948 with a degree in Agriculture, and was employed by the National Bank of Commerce as a Farm manager for 36 years retiring in 1989. For the past several years Howard worked as an associate at Lewis Funeral Chapels in York and Henderson. Howard was the York County Chairman of the Republican Party, Member and Past Commander of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Bolton American Legion Post #19 of York, Past President of the Noon Sertoma Club, the Methodist Men (where he currently was serving as Treasurer), Epworth Village Board, the Crime Stoppers Board, all of York. Howard was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in York, where he served on many boards, committees, and sang in the Chancel Choir. In 1989 Howard was bestowed with the honor of being selected Yorkfest King and was a past Yorkfest Parade Chairman.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy L. Anderson of York; four children: Alan (and wife, Elizabeth) Anderson of Lincoln, NE Kenneth (and wife, Sharon) Anderson of Kearney NE, Jaquie (and husband, Mark) Nielson of Omaha, NE Bert (and wife, Janet) Anderson of Lincoln, NE; nice grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters: Dora (and husband, Don) Sylvester of Albuquerque, NM, Melva (and husband, Ted) Anderson of Murphy, CA, Frank (and wife, Ila) Anderson of Mitchell, NE, Alice Babbitt of Paxton NE, and Zora (and husband, Chet) Yoder of Blue Hill NE. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, one brother (Charles Anderson) and one sister (Audrey Anna Anderson in infancy).

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in York with Rev, Art Phillips officiating. Internment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery at York with Military grave side honors by Bolton American Legion Post #19 of York. Visitation will begin at noon on Monday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York, where the family will gather to greet friends from 6:00 pm. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in York, or the York Area Senior Center. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Teresa Coon

Platte City, Mo resident, 45

Teresa Coon, 45, of Platte City, Mo. (lifelong Nebraska resident), died April 15, 2004 at Platte City.

She was born Sept. 23, 1958, to Bill and Hazel Holt. She was a member of Christ Chapel Church in Platte City and the York Assembly of God, York, NE.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Teresa is survived by her husband, James Coon of Platte City; father and step-mother, Bill and Judy Holt of York; son, B.J. Stell of York and daughters, Jamie Smith of York and Tabetha Miller of Flint, Mich., brother, Doug Holt of Columbus, NE and ten grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004 at Rollins Funeral Home, Platte City, Mo. Graveside services will be on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery at York.

Arrangements are being handled by the Rollins Funeral Home of Platte City and Metz Mortuary of York.

Donita Wolsleben

Henderson resident, 75

Donita Wolsleben, age 75 of Henderson, died Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at Henderson. Donita was born November 7, 1928 in the Somerford community near Sargent, NE to George and Mattie (Phrem) Wolsleben. She lived in Broken Bow then Sargent until February of 1992 when she became a resident of the Henderson Care Center. Donita is survived by her sisters Dorine (Harold) Youngland of York and Dorothy Bruner of Grafton; her brother Robert (Dorothy) Wolsleben of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents and brother Richard.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Somerford Cemetery with the Rev. Elton Berg officiating. No visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Henderson Care Center. Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.

Mary Binger

York resident, 53

Funeral services for Mary Beth Binger, age 53, of York will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at Grace Lutheran Church in Neligh with the Rev. David Kuhfal officiating with burial in the Laurel Hill Cemetery at Neligh. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Beyer Funeral Home in Neligh. Memorial services will be held at York Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 3 p.m., Wednesday. Lunch will follow the services at the Midway Cafe in York.

She died Saturday, April 17, 2004 at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh following a brief illness.

She was born July 8, 1950 at Tilden to Dwight and Ruth (Huelle) Binger. She lived on a farm in the Antelope Creek area near Neligh until 1956 when she moved to Central City. Here she attended school and graduated with the class of 1968. She then attended Hastings Community College. She moved to York where she lived until 1978 when she returned to Neligh. While in Neligh she worked at the nursing home. She moved back to York in 1983. She had worked at the Midway Cafe, as a waitress, for more than 20 years.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in York. She was also a member of A.A. and served as the treasurer for her Monday Night Group.

She is survived by her parents, Dwight and Ruth Binger of Neligh; grandmother, Evelyn Binger of Neligh; two sisters, Evelyn VonKampen of Norfolk and Julie Drobny of Lynch; two brothers, Richard Binger of Lockwood, Mo., and John Binger of Creighton and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two grandfathers and one grandmother.

Dorothy Minnick

Stromsburg resident, 88

Dorothy Minnick, 88, of Stromsburg died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at the York General Hospital as a result of a car accident.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 10 at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg. Rev. Keith Brozek will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg.

Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.

Avis M. Beckman

Stromsburg resident, 84

Avis M. Beckman, 84, of Stromsburg died Thursday, May 6, 2004 as a result of a car accident.

Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 10 at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. Rev. Richard Melano will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur C. Borchers

Hastings resident, 90

Arthur C. (Art) Borchers, 90, of Hastings died May 5, 2004 at Perkins-Pavilion in Hastings.

He was born on a farm near Kenesaw Dec. 9, 1913, to Heye and Louise (Nienhueser) Borchers. He attended school at District 36 for four years and then Wanda Parochial School for four years. He farmed with his Dad and then for himself near Kenesaw until 1994 when he retired and moved to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings in 1985. He was a member of Wanda Zion Lutheran Church in Juniata.

Surviving are two nephews, Glenn (Carole) Borchers of Morehead, Minn., and Lamonte (Joy) Borchers of Shingletown, Calif.; and five nieces, Joan (Pete) Werner of Minden, Ethel Schukei of Hastings, Marlene Schukei of Hastings, Janice (LoRanye) Elmer of Grafton and Lois (Darrel) Bullard of Hastings. Preceded by four sisters, Mildred, Edna, Esther and Hilda and one brother, Ernst.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 10 at Wanda Zion Lutheran Church in Juniata with the Rev. Harold King officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw and one hour prior to church services. Burial will be Monday at Wanda Zion Church Cemetery.

Doris L. Knocke

York resident, 95

Doris L. Knocke, age 95 years, of York, Nebraska, passed away at the York General Hearthstone Care Center in York on Monday evening, May 10, 2004.

Doris was born on July 13, 1908 at Milford, Neb., to Charles Edgar and Lura Alice (Moore) McMannan. The family moved to Fairbury, Neb., at an early age and Doris graduated from Fairbury High School and then went on to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for two years. Following that she taught Country School near Fairbury for three years.

Doris was united in marriage to John S. Knocke on July 28, 1929 at Lincoln, Neb. The couple lived in Fairbury and Endicott, Neb., for several years prior to moving to York around 40 years ago. In the early years, Doris played piano for silent movies at the Bonham Theatre in Fairbury and loved collecting dolls. She was a member of the Blue Valley Keepsake Doll Club and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York.

Survivors include three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Staley of Bellevue, Neb.; nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John in July of 1991 and her son, Mervin Charles Knocke in July of 1998.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 13, 2004 at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York with Pastor Jeff Wulf officiating. Interment will be in the Fairbury Cemetery at Fairbury, Neb. Visitation was held Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church at York. Lewis Funeral Chapel of York is in charge of arrangements.

Donald William Suckstorf

York resident, 66

York-Donald William Suckstorf age 66 of York died on Thursday, May 13 at York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary in York.

Blake Adam Martin

Atkins, Iowa infant

Blake Adam Martin, infant son of Dean and Kileen Martin of 302 A Ave., Atkins, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. There were no services. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids was in charge of arrangements.

Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, Jordan of Atkins; his grandparents, Mary Martin and Ray Zimmerman, both of York and Rudy Kraft of Marengo; his great-grandparents, Earl and Irene Stroud of Iowa City and his aunt, LaVonne Greiner of Chandler, Ariz.

Angeline L. Darnall

York resident, 97

Angeline L. Darnall, age 97 of York, died Monday, May 17 at York. She was born March 21, 1907 on a farm near Utica, Neb. to Lucian G. and M. Barbara (Gutbrodt) Learned. She graduated from Utica High School in 1925. She was married to Oris N. Darnall of Utica on July 31, 1937 at the private home of her sister and husband, Mabel and Walter Heidbreder, east of York. They resided in Utica until the spring of 1942 when they moved to Long Beach, Calif. to work in the World War II shipbuilding yards. Following the war, they continued to live in Long Beach where Oris was an auto mechanic. They retired for a few years in Apple Valley, Calif., then returned to their home in Long Beach. They had no children.

While living in Long Beach, Angeline was active in the United Methodist Church. She also had a special love for music and poetry. Before her marriage, she was a popular local singer including performances at the Utica Opera House with her sister Mabel accompanying her at the piano. Until recently, she was able, on a moments notice, to spontaneously recite verse after verse of her favorite poets.

Oris died February 10, 1984 in Pasadena, Calif. and was buried in the Utica Cemetery. Angeline continued to reside in Long Beach until her health began to fail. She then moved to York in the spring of 1999, residing first in the Mahoney House and later at the Hearthstone.

Angeline is survived by a nephew, Walt Heidbreder and his wife Colleen of York; a niece, Betty Dunn and her husband Pat of Navasota, Texas; two great-nephews, Randy Learned of Eagle, Neb. and Douglas Learned of Lincoln, Neb. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Mabel; three brothers, Oscar, Warren and R.E. "Buzz" Learned as well as a nephew Darrell Learned.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 at the Metz Chapel in York with the Reverend Art Phillips officiating. Burial will be at the Utica Cemetery in Utica, Neb. Memorials may be directed to the Hearthstone or Hospice Care of Nebraska. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday at the mortuary. Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of the arrangements.

Ella Allen

York resident, 82

Ella Allen, age 82 of York, died Thursday, May, 13 2004 at York. She was born November 19, 1921 in rural York County to Marshall M. and Helen Mabel (Walkup) Wright. She was a 1929 graduate of Benedict high School and attended York College. She was united in marriage to Arthur Deal Allen at York on January 6, 1952. The couple farmed southeast of York for several years and then moved to Iowa. They returned to Benedict in 1963 where they lived and farmed until retiring in York. Ella worked at the ASCS office in York, the York County Courthouse and was the secretary at the Benedict Public Schools for several years. Ella was a member of the Benedict United Methodist Church, the York Quilter's Guild and United Methodist Women and served on the Benedict School Board.

Survivors include her 2 sons; Kent (Toni) Allen, of Bradshaw and Craig (Lisa) Allen of Benedict; grandchildren, Rachelle, Bryce, Eric, Morgan and Grant Allen; brother Winton (Maxine) Wright of Benedict; sisters Doris Campbell of York and LaMoyne (Richard) Wismer of Montrose, CO; aunts Louise Merchant of Polk and Lucille Walkup of York; 1 niece and 8 nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and son Tim.

Funeral Services will be held Monday, May 17, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Art Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the Benedict United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Saturday at Metz Mortuary in York.
