Esther Brondel

Central City resident, 90

Esther Irene Brondel, 90, of Central City, died on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at the Central City Care Center. Funeral services will be Friday, June 11, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Dean Entrekin officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 10th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Eleanor A. Hoffschneider

Paxton, IL resident, 91

Eleanor A. Hoffschneider, age 91 of Paxton, IL, formerly a longtime resident of Waco, NE, died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at Paxton.

Services are pending at a later date.

Metz Mortuary in York is in charge of services.

Esther Brondel

Central City resident, 90

Esther Irene Brondel, 90, of Central City, died on Tuesday, June 08, 2004, at the Central City Care Center. Funeral services will be Friday, June 11, 2004 at 1:00 P.M. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Rev. Dean Entrekin officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 10th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Central City Senior Center or to the Christian Church in Central City.

Esther was born on May 4, 1914, in Benedict to Henry P. and Ella B. (Baker) Harrington. She grew up in Benedict and attended Benedict Country School. After completing the eighth grade in country school, Esther went to York and roomed while attending high school. She graduated from York High School. On January 11, 1937, Esther I. Harrington and John H. Brondel were united in marriage in Kansas. They moved to Central City, where they lived and raised their family. Esther babysat for many families in the Central City area, she worked at the Hallgrimson Nursing Home, and the Central City Senior Center. John died on April 12, 1980. Esther lived in her home until January of 2004, when she moved into the Central City Care Center.

Esther was a member of the Christian Church in Central City, she enjoyed going to the Senior Center and playing in their rhythm band. Some of her other interests were birds, cats, and writing poetry.

Those left to cherish her memory are four daughters-Deloris and Bob Kyes of Central City; Ella and Tony Lachenbruch of Ashton, Maryland; Katheryn and Sam Price of Acton, California, Marlene Brondel and Mike Schafer of Lincoln; three sons-Stanley and Ann Brondel of Grand Island; Dale Brondel of Lincoln; and Raymond Brondel of Tehachapi, California; daughter-in-law Carlene Brondel of Central City; sister-in-law Ellen Harrington of Lincoln; seventeen grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons-Marvin in 1959 and David in 2003; one daughter-Emma Senkbile in 1999; son-in-law Wayne Senkbile in 1998; three brothers-Roland, Ralph, and Laverne Harrington; and one sister-Louise H. Pomeroy.

Helen Shaw

York resident, 92

Helen Shaw, age 92, died June 14, 2004, at York. Services are pending at Metz Mortuary.

Robert R. Baumann

North Platte resident, 82

Robert (Bob) R. Baumann, age 82, died June 8, 2004, at Linden Court in North Platte, Neb. Funeral services were held Friday, June 11 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Chadron with Rev. Richard Wheatley and Dave Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Chadron State College Foundation or the Callahan Cancer Center in North Platte. Memorials may be sent through Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, Neb. 69337.

Bob was born April 16, 1922 in Holstein, Iowa, to Frederick and Edna Baumann in Cushing, Iowa. He moved to Chadron in 1939 to attend Chadron State College. He joined the military and was a Naval Aviator during World War II. During that time, he married the love of his life, Mary Nadine (Babe) Simpson, and was married for 55 years.

Bob and Babe owned and operated the F & M Bootery in Chadron for 35 years. He was a Mason, lifetime member and past exalted ruler of the Chadron Elks Club, lifetime member of the Chadron United Methodist Church and the American Legion. He was a loyal Chadron State Eagles supporter and was named to the Chadron State Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2003 he moved to North Platte to be closer to his children.

Survivors include sons, Larry (Marcia) Baumann of North Platte, Mike (Pam) Baumann of Morrill, Lee (Kathy) Baumann of Maineville, Ohio; daughter, Jan (Dave) Smith of McCook; Cheryl Kennedy of York, considered to be a second daughter; 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Preceded by his wife, Mary Nadine (Babe); brother, Roger, killed in action during World War II and his parents.

Full military services were provided by the Veteran's Honor Guard of Chadron.

Evelyn Davis

Osceola resident, 79

Evelyn M. Davis, age 79, of Osceola, formerly of Shelby, died June 11, 2004 at the Osceola Good Samaritan Center in Osceola, Neb. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, June 14, 2004 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Rev. John Rooney officiating. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 p.m., Sunday, June 13 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A scripture service followed by Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday with Rev. John Rooney officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Shelby. Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn was born Jan. 13, 1925 in Butler County to Oswald and Mayme (O'Hare) Lux. She attended school until the 11th grade at Surprise, Neb., and then graduated from Gresham High School in 1941.

On July 21, 1942, Evelyn was united in marriage at Shelby, Neb., to Robert E. Davis. To this union three sons were born. They resided on a farm in Butler County until 1965 when they moved to Shelby.

Evelyn worked as a cook at Sacred Heart School until 1962, and then went to work at Dale Electronics until she retired in 1987.

Evelyn and Robert remained in Shelby until 2003 when they moved to Ridgeview Heights in Osceola, where they lived until her death.

Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby, St. Anne's Guild and Dale Electronics Alumni. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cooking, sewing and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband Robert E. Davis of Osceola; two sons, Wayne (Patty) Davis of Columbus and Rick (Deb) Davis of Shelby; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille (Bob) Litjen of David City and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her parents; one infant son, William; and one brother, George Lux.

Elmer E. Baker

York resident, 77

Elmer E. Baker, age 77 years, of York, Nebraska passed away at York on June 13, 2004.

Elmer was born in West Fork, Arkansas on May 20, 1927 and became a Christian in Fayetteville, Arkansas in January of 1943.

After graduating from Fayetteville High School in 1944, he attended the University of Arkansas and later transferred to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, graduating in 1949.

He did graduate work at Texas A & M, earned a Masters degree in English and a Masters degree in Library Science at East Texas State University.

He received a Doctor of Laws from Lubbock Christian University.

Elmer taught school for fifty-six years: one year in Beaver, Oklahoma; fifteen years at Boles Children's Home in Quinlan, Texas; forty years at York College at York, Nebraska.

At Boles Children's Home, Elmer served as classroom teacher for six years and High School Principal for nine years.

While at York College Elmer served at different times as Director of the York College Library, Professor of English, Chairperson of the Division of Humanities, and Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Elmer was married to Wylene Kennon and had two chidren: Carl Baker of Sylva, North Carolina and Kathleen Baker of York, Nebraska. Elmer served on the Kilgore Memorial Library Board for twenty-two years; was a member of the Southeast Library Systems Board for eighteen years; served on many other state and regional Library systems boards. He was a member of the Church of Christ for sixty-one years. He served as a Bible School teacher for many years and as an Elder of the East Hill Church of Christ in York, Nebraska for twenty years.

Elmer loved to share his travel experiences with his students by taking them to the British Isles and led yearly tours to Red Cloud, Nebraska to the home of Willa Cather for students and interested local people. He loved music and delighted family and neighbors with piano performances.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart and Martha Hann Baker and a brother, Newton Baker. He is survived by his wife, Wylene Baker, long-time math teacher in Texas and York College and assistant Library Director at York College at York; a son, Dr. Carl E. Baker and his wife, Brenda Baker; Carl's children: Joel, Melissa, and Philip; a daughter, Dr. Kathleen Baker Wheeler and her husband, Dr. Frank Wheeler; their son, Frank Wheeler Jr. and his wife, Marie Wheeler. Elmer is also survived by three brothers: J.D. and Lillian Baker of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Garrett and Laura Baker of Fort Worth, Texas; and Richard and Ailene Baker of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He is also survived by many friends and loved ones.

Memorials may be directed to York College or the Friends of Kilgore Memorial Library.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at the East Hill Church of Christ in York, Nebraska with Bruce Goodwin officiating.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at York, Nebraska.

Visitation will begin at noon on Monday at the Lewis Funeral Chapel in York, who is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Alfred Paul Neujahr

Cape Coral, FL resident, 77

Robert Alfred Paul Neujahr passed away in the loving company of his family at Hope Hospice House in Cape Coral, FL on June 16, 2004 at the age of 77 years. This was no ordinary life, this was a life well lived and well loved by his wife, Dorothy, sharing happily 56 years of marriage.

Bob was born on October 25, 1926 to Otto and Martha (Fisher) Neujahr on the family farm near Gresham, NE. He became a child of God through baptism on October 28, 1926 and was confirmed on May 11, 1941 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Gresham, NE. On October 4, 1947 Bob was united in marriage to Dorothy Barth at Zion Lutheran Church Oklahoma City, OK. Bob served 2 years in the US Navy and is a veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Lee, his daughter and her husband, Linda and Gary Graf of Harrisburg, PA; his granddaughter and her husband, Jenae and Cory Wiegert of Evergreen, CO; one brother Gordon and his wife Charlene Neujahr of Fort Atkinson, WI; one sister Adela and her husband Elmer Schmidt of Aurora, NE; one sister-in-law Alice Neujahr of Omaha, NE. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Viola Reiling, Carol, and Elaine Neujahr and Velma Reed, brothers Armond, Rueben, Lyle and Ronald Neujahr, sister-in-law Isabelle, bother-in-law Clark Reed.

All who were fortunate enough to know Bob will miss him immeasurably. Bob's family invites his relation and friends to join them in a celebration of his life and the joy and fond memories that Bob has brought into our lives.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 18, 2004 from 5 - 8pm in the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral, FL 33991, phone (239) 283 0540.

Funeral services will be held Saturday June 19, 2004 at 10:30am with visitation preceding at 10am at Abiding Love Lutheran Church, 3205 Chiquita Blvd., Cape Coral, FL. Interment to follow at Coral Ridge Cemetery, 1630 Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral, FL.

Theodore Jorgensen

Lincoln resident, 97

Theodore Jorgensen, 97, died June 2, 2004 at Lincoln. He was born near Cordova Feb. 18, 1907, to Anton and Marie (Adamsen) Jorgensen. Ted was the oldest of five children.

He was confirmed in Cordova Lutheran Church and later joined UCC Church in Exeter in 1944. He attended country school and was raised on the family farm. He married Hazel Buck on March 8, 1903 and they had a son, Kenneth. He lived on the farm north of Exeter. In 1970 they moved to Exeter. Ted was proud of being state corn picking champ. He played baseball in "Pasture League" and was active in UCC Church, Oddfellow Lodge (star master in 1976) and Breeders and Feeders Association.

Surviving are his son Kenneth (Letha) Jorgensen; grandsons, Kelvin (Marsha) Jorgensen, Kent (Rhonda) Jorgensen; great-grandchildren, Kellen and Klaire Jorgensen; step-great-grandchildren, Amber, Ashley and Alex Consbruck; brother, Harold of Exeter, Rex of Arkansas; sister-in-law, Phyllis Michl of California, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Marie; wife, Hazel; sisters, Eleanor Minchow, Margret Ruhl; sisters-in-law, Billie Ruth Jorgensen, Dorothy Jorgensen, Edna Condon; brothers-in-law, Roy Condon, Frank Michl, Bill Ruhl and Art Minchow.

Funeral services were held at Exeter UCC Church June 5, 2004 with the Rev. John Scavo officiating. Jeanine Krejci was accompanist for hymns, "How Great Thou Art" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Casketbearers were Kenneth Bolte, Bill Volkmer, Sonny Hanson, Joe Splichal, Rusty Ruhl and Norman Bristol.

Internment was in Exeter Cemetery. Farmer Funeral Home of Exeter was in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Ellen Wiens

Grandview, Mo. resident, 54

Mary Ellen Wiens, 54, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004. She was born Feb. 27, 1950 in York to John and Bertha (Dick) Quiring.

Survivors include her mother, Bertha Quiring of Henderson; her husband Gary Wiens; three children, David Wiens and his wife Stephanie of Kansas City, Mo., Alyson Alberts and her husband Ben of Grandview, and Rachel Wiens of Grandview; three sisters, Carol Dick and her husband John of Hillsboro, Kan., Elaine Nikkel and her husband Larry of Hillsboro, Janet Theissen and her husband John of Inman, Kan.; and one brother, John Quiring and his wife of Hampton.

The public may pay its respects from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 19 at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Longview Funeral Home, 12700 S. Raytown Rd., Kansas City, Mo. 69149. Private graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Longview Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 20 at the International House of Prayer, 3515 E. Red Bridge Rd., Kansas City, Mo., 64137 with a reception following. Memorials may be made to the Healing Rooms at the International House of Prayer of Kansas City. D.W. Newcomer's Sons Longview Funeral Home (816)761-6272 is in charge of the arrangements.

Regina T. Hesser

York resident, 94

Regina T. Heser, 94 of York, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 in Fairmont. She was born December 5, 1909 near Waco, NE to Charles and Mary (Schilly) Jokerst. She married George Heser on February 1, 1932 in York. Regina worked for many years for Howard and Dorothy May at their floral shop in York. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, St. Joseph's Altar Society, and the Catholic Daughters. She loved to quilt and crochet.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Jo (Lawrence) McGowan of McCool Junction; two sons, Richard (Rosemary) Heser and Thomas (Sandra) Heser all of Omaha; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Sister Grace Jokerst of Alton, IL, Irma Gleason of Colorado Springs, CO, Alice Sherrill of Lebanon, OR, Alta Warner of Salem, OR, and Colette Hartley of Columbia, SC; three brothers, Carl Jokerst of Tucson, AZ, Herman (Madelin) Jokerst of St. Augustine, FL and James (Irene) Jokerst of Salina, KS; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; son, John Heser; sister, Eileen Thompson; brother, Francis Jokerst.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 19th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosary services 6:30 p.m. Friday at Metz Chapel in York. Visitation will begin at noon on Friday. Condolences may be emailed to metz@metzmortuary.com. Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.
