Warren E. Hasenkamp

Stanton resident, 76

Warren E. Hasenkamp, age 76 passed away Saturday June 19, 2004 at the Stanton Health Center in Stanton. Warren was born on March 25, 1928 in Cummin County NE to Herman and Minna (Kind) Hasenkamp. He was baptized and confirmed in Beemer NE, and attended school at Curning County rural District #5. On June 7, 1953 Warren Married Louise Fassnacht at the First Evangelical Lutheran church in McCool Junction NE. Warren and Louise farmed near West Point until 1963 when they moved to farm near Stanton. Farmed there until 1989 when he retired. Warren enjoyed fishing and bird watching. Entered Stanton Health Center in June 2004. Warren served in the military during the Korean war as a Corporal and then transferred to the Army Reserves after his first tour of duty.

Warren was a Member of the Stranton V.F.W. Post # 3602, the American Angus Association and Lueschen's Birders Club of Norfolk.

Those left to remember Warren are his son, Stan (Jeanette) Hasenkamp of Stanton, three daughters, Janet Adams of Wayne Tammy (Randy) Smalley of Norfolk Cynthia (Keith) Vanderlin of Grand Forks, North Dakota, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, His brother, LeRoy Hasenkamp of Fremont and sister, LaVanda Schuetze of West Point.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents, and wife Louise, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be at the Faith Lutheran Church in Stranton, Tuesday June 22, at 1:00 p.m. Military rites will be performed by members of the Stanton V.F.W. post #3602 and American Legion Post #88

Internment will follow at the Stranton Cemetery.

Visitation hours will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Shultz-Vogel-Johnson Mortuary in Stanton.

Eugenio Acosta Marin

York resident, 94

Eugenio Acosta Marin, age 94, of York, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at York. A funeral mass was held on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York with Fr. Leo Seiker officiating. Additional services and burial will be held at Jimenez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Del Socorro Vazques of York; 3 sons, David, Javier and Ruben, all of Chihuahua, Mexico; 2 daughters, Lourdes of York and Maria of Lincoln.

Metz Mortuary of York is handling arrangements.

Donna L. Murray

York resident, 75

Donna L. Murray, 75, of York, died June 18, 2004 at York General Hospital. She was born Nov. 10. 1928 at Friend.

Survivors include a daughter, Toni Laverty of Scottsbluff; sister, Judy Sutton of Columbus and special caregiver, Donna Kirkley. Preceded by her father, Alva N. Murray; mother, Grace Gibson; brothers, Lyle George, Burton, Bill and Bob; two sisters, Edna Ulshafer and Betty Steffensen.

Memorial services were held at York's Apostolic Church with Pastor Ed Morey officiating.

Ray K. Johnson

Grand Island resident, 45

Ray K. Johnson, 45, of Grand Island, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at his home. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 22, 2004, at 10:30 a.m., at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor William R. Voelker officiating. Burial will be at the Grant Evergreen Cemetery at Talmage, NE at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ray was born January 27, 1959 at Nebraska City, NE, the son of Ray G. and Madella (Mardy) L. (Childers) Johnson. He moved with his family to Fairmont, NE where he received his education and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1977. Ray began his cooperative career right out of school, where he managed and consulted in Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, and Iowa.

In 1980, Ray married Theresa Komarek. In November of 2002, Ray had a major surgery and his health had deteriorated slowly since. He married Angela Lynn Stalker on Jan. 5, 2003. He and Angela were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their baby this coming September.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, golfing, and, he could build anything. But most of all, he enjoyed the special time he spent with his children and his family.

Ray is survived by his wife, Angela of Grand Island and a special baby due in September, two children (from first marriage): Nathaniel Alan Johnson of Lincoln, NE and Olivia Rae Johnson of Ulysses, NE, his parents: Ray G. and Madella (Mardy) Johnson of Fairmont, NE, one brother: Jon Johnson and wife Jean of Albion, NE, one sister: Susan Johnson-Meade of McCool Junction, NE, and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Alan in 1974, and his grandparents.

Memorials are suggested to the Ray Kent Johnson Memorial Fund.

Rachel (Christensen) Cordes

Scribner resident, 84

Funeral services for Rachel (Christensen) Cordes, age 84, of Scribner will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner with the Rev. Bruce Schut officiating. Organist is Brenda Lamberty and casketbearers are nephews, Dave Heywood, Mike Lamberty, Bob Cordes, Gary Cordes, Fred Christensen and John Christensen. Visitation was held Monday at Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner. Burial will be in the Scribner Cemetery.

She died Saturday, June 19, 2004 at her home in Scribner after having battled cancer for the last seven years.

Rachel Louise was the middle child of seven children born for Fred and Louise (Hansen) Christensen, and was born Oct. 22, 1919 on the family farm northeast of Oakland, Neb. She was baptized Aug. 15, 1920 by her uncle, Rev. Paul Heisey and confirmed at Oakland First Methodist Church in 1932 and St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner April 18, 1947.

She attended country school at District 52, also known as Larson School in rural Oakland, through the eighth grade. She graduated from Oakland High School in 1936 and went to Midland College in Fremont where she graduated with a teaching degree in 1941.

Her first teaching job was at Scribner High School where she taught English and drama from 1941-1943. She also taught at Madison High School from 1943 to 1946.

In the fall of 1941, Rachel met Carroll "Cayo" Cordes. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II and following his discharge, Rachel and Cayo were married in Oakland Oct. 6, 1946. They settled in Scribner and raised four sons, Randy, Philip, Jack and Scott.

After her sons were raised, Rachel was employed by Good Samaritan Center in Scribner. She began as a nurse's aide and transferred to housekeeping department in later years of employment. She worked there for 24 years from 1979 until 2003.

She was an active member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner since her marriage in 1947 and was active in Ladies Aid. Rachel was active in her community serving on the Scribner Board of Education for 11 1/2 years; chaired Red Cross Blood Mobile for 25+ years; was a member of The Scribner Women's Club and a member of the "T.C.J.'s" and TOPS and several other clubs and organizations.

Surviving are her four sons, Randy (Paulette) of York, Phil (Jeanette) of Scribner, Jack (Barb) of Scribner, and Scott (Lora) of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren, Becky of Dallas, Texas, Mike of Vermillion, S.D., Kelly and fiance Rob Hagedorn of Omaha, Kevin of Lincoln, Jeff of Lincoln, Brian and wife Melody of Topeka, Kan., Joe and Michelle of Omaha, Lanae and Matt of Norfolk; 2 great-grandchildren, Michael and Alana Pope of Omaha; 3 brothers, Don (Melva) Christensen of Oakland, Myron (Ruth) Christensen of Oakland and Forrest of Omaha; sister, Elaine (Junior) Appleby of Scribner; in-laws, Ray (Dorothy) Cordes of Scribner, Marcella Lamberty of Scribner and Georgean Cordes of Kearney; 16 nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Cayo, Nov. 21, 1994; father, Fred A. Christensen, 1958; mother, Louise, 1961; brother, Glenn at birth in 1914; sister, Lois Jean 1928, a niece, Annablle Christensen 1993, 2 nephews, Roger Cordes 1965 and David Appleby at birth in 1959; in-laws, LeRoy Cordes 2004, Beulah Cordes 1994, Herb Heywood 1985, Gertrude Heywood 2002 and Ray Lamberty 1994.

Memorials may be directed to St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner, The American Cancer Society or the Hospice Program at Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont.

Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner is in charge of arrangements.

Vivian J. Ekstrom

Osceola resident, 85

Vivian J. Ekstrom, age 85, of Osceola, Neb., died June 20, 2004 at the Osceola Good Samaritan Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Clifford Hoper officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 23 from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at Swede Home Cemetery. Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola in charge of arrangements.

Esther A. Van Pelt

Central City resident, 87

Esther A. Van Pelt, 87, of Central City, formerly of the Palmer and Hordville areas, died at Long Term Care in Central City on Monday, June 21, 2004 following a short illness. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 24 at 11:30 A.M. at the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville with Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will be on Thursday, June 24 at 2:30 P.M. at the Rose Hill Cemetery near Palmer. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 23 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.soltfh.com.

Esther was born on March 10, 1917 on the family farm north of Worms to Onen and Hattie (Wagner) Simonson. She attended the Zion Lutheran School in Worms and Palmer High School; and in later years completed her high school work to receive her diploma. On September 21, 1936, Esther A. Simonson and Charles L. "Chick" Van Pelt were united in marriage. They lived in the Archer and Palmer areas, where they farmed until they moved into Palmer in 1961. Esther worked for nursing homes in Palmer and Central City and worked in the food service for the Palmer Schools as well as helping her husband with his custodian duties at the school. In 1968, they moved to Hordville where she also worked in the food service at the schools and continued to help her husband with his custodian work at the Hordville Schools. She retired in 1986 and they moved into Central City in 2003.

Esther was a member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Hordville and the Women of the ELCA. She was a charter member of the Loup Valley Homemakers and belonged for over 50 years, she was a member of the Palmer Legion Auxiliary, and some of her hobbies included crocheting, quilting, sewing, and gardening.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, "Chick" of Central City; two sons-Jay and Sondra Van Pelt of Hordville; Dan and Marlys Van Pelt of Bennington; six daughters-Mary and Glenn Fesser of Morrisonville, Illinois; Nancy and Vonl Mattson of Grand Island; Carol and Stan Corbett of North Grafton, Massachusetts; Bonnie Jacobsen of Lincoln; Connie and James Taylor of McCool Junction; and Doris and Mike Cerny of Columbus; 25 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; four sisters-Rose and Harry Thede of St. Paul; May and Robert Mettenbrink of Grand Island; Alice Langrehr of St. Libory; and Alma and Eugene Bredthauer of Ord; and one sister-in-law Norma Jean Simonson of Palmer.

She was preceded in death by her brother-John Simonson; two sons-in-law Herb Brown, Jr. and Paul Jacobsen; one grandson-Matthew Dale Jacobsen; and one brother-in-law Harvey Langrehr, Sr.

Vivian Ekstrom

Osceola resident, 85

Vivian J. Ekstrom, 85, of Osceola, Neb., died at the Osceola Good Samaritan Center June 20, 2004. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Clifford Hoper officiating. Pallbearers were Rodney Ekstrom, Gregory Ekstrom, Matthew Hendrickson, Tim Teegerstrom, Lyndon Teegerstrom and Steve Teegerstrom. Organist was Louise Wheeler and soloist was Betsy Johnson. Musical selections were "Amazing Grace" and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus". Visitation was held Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church. Interment was in Swede Home Cemetery. Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola was in charge of arrangements.

Vivian was born Feb. 5, 1919 to William B. and Esther Louise (Peterson) Larson in rural Osceola. She attended District #7 country school and graduated from High Prairie School in 1936.

On April 25, 1925, Vivian married Rolland C. Ekstrom at Osceola. To this union, two children were born.

Vivian was a homemaker and worked at Good Samaritan Center in Osceola for 10 years as a nurse's aide. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed being active in her church, sewing and spending time with her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Karlene V. Ekstrom of David City; one son, Rick (Jan) Ekstrom of Omaha; one brother, Myron W. (Wanda) Larson of Osceola; three sisters, Floreine M. Almstrum of Longview, Wash., Ramona (Vance) Teegerstrom of Stromsburg and Loretta A. Mosier of Lincoln; three grandchildren, Rod (Angel) Ekstrom of Rumney, N.H., Greg (Darci) Ekstrom of Omaha and Julie Ekstrom of Omaha; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceded by her husband, Rolland; and an infant brother, Reuel Larson.

Donna L. Murray

York resident, 75

Donna L. Murray, age 75, of York, died Friday June 18, 2004 at York. Donna was born at Friend, NE on November 10, 1928 to Alva and Grace (Gibson) Murray. Donna spent the last several years of her life in York, living at the Leisure Home, then just lately at the Hearthstone. Among her survivors are her daughter Toni Laverty of Scottsbluff, NE. At Donna's request, she has been cremated. Metz Mortuary of York handled her arrangements.

Jeanne M. Kemper

Whitewater, CO resident, 51

Jeanne M. Kemper of Whitewater, CO died on June 20, 2004, at her residence. She was 51 years old.

Jeanne was born on June 6, 1953, to Robert Bellows and Jeannette (Buerkle) Bellows in Plainview, NE, where she spent her childhood and graduated from McCool Jct. High School in 1971.

Jeanne married Bill Eudy on July 9, 1973, they had two children, Billie Jean and Shane. She married Douglas C. Kemper on November 10, 1993. She worked at Walker SMS in Grand Junction, CO. She loved her cats, fishing, riding ATV's and crocheting.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas C. Kemper of Whitewater, CO; her father, Robert Bellows of McCool Jct.; son, Shane Eudy of Carbondale, CO; daughter, Billie Sapien of Winnemucca, NV; step-daughter, Marilyn Kemper of Benalillo, NM; brothers, Richard Bellows of Pueblo, CO, Robert Bellows of McCool Jct., Russell Bellows of Grand Island and Ron Bellows of York; sisters, Karen (Tom) Kaeding and Thea (Bob) Gaver, both of York; grandmother, Marie Buerkle of York; three grandchildren, Kendall, Bailey and Giovani. She was preceded in death by her mother.

The body will be cremated. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 24, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at McCool United Methodist Church. Memorials should be directed to the McCool United Methodist Church.

Clara L. Manning-Fletcher

Omaha resident, 48

Clara L. Manning-Fletcher, 48, of Omaha died Tuesday, June 22, 2004 in Omaha.

She was born at Friend Jan. 29, 1956 to Thomas and Marilyn (Murohy) Manning. She worked for 19 years at Emmanuel Hospital Respiratory Care Department-Omaha.

Surviving are daughter, Erica (Travis) Brock of Omaha; parents, Tom and Marilyn Manning of Fairmont; brothers, Thomas D. (Bette) Manning of Fairmont, Chris (Brenda) Manning of Exeter, Mark (Leanne) Manning of Crete, Kent (Cindy) Manning of Fairmont and Matt Manning of Lincoln and sisters, Melinda (Tom) Hofferber of Lyons, Colo., and Jennifer (Mark) Harris of Lincoln.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter with the Rev. Kenneth Borowiak officiating. Rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Thursday at Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter and from 6:30 p.m. on at the church. Graveside services will be at Exeter Cemetery in Exeter.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, Allegent Emmanuel Respiratory Care Dept., St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter of St. John Vlanney in Millard.

June Arkle

York resident, 82

June Marie Bergling Arkle, 82, of York, NE, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 at Kearney, NE.

She was born on the family farm near Atwood, KS to Arthur and Amy (Shipley) Bergling on June 15, 1922.

June was married to Melvin Arkle on June 12, 1947. She worked as assistant clerk of the County Court at York County Court House for twelve years along with various other government positions.

She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, Ladies Auxiliary VFW 1133, and volunteered for the Red Cross Blood drives and Epworth Village.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin, daughter Donna (Larry) Schroeder of Longmont, CO, and son John (Christine) Arkle of Kearney, NE. Five grandchildren are Jill and Amber Schroeder, and Erika, Shawn, and Aaron Arkle; brother Verol Bergling from Atwood, KS; and brother-in-law Robert Arkle of York.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and brothers, Waldo and Raleigh Bergling.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 26, 10am at Metz Mortuary in York with burial at 5 p.m. in Atwood, Ks. Open visitation hours on Friday, with family from 6-8:30 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church.
