Ruth M. Stutzman

Beaver Crossing resident, 73

Ruth May Stutzman, 73, of Beaver Crossing died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005 at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.

She was born May 2, 1931 at Dorchester, Neb., to William and Edna (Britton) Sanburn, the youngest of four children. Ruth attended Dorchester Public School and graduated with the Class of 1949.

She married Percy Wayne Stutzman on Aug. 19, 1950 in Friend. They were parents of three sons, Alan, Michael and Terry and a daughter, Diane.

Ruth joined the Dorchester Methodist Church and later transferred her membership to Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church. She also served on the Beaver Crossing Cemetery Board for several years.

They lived on farms located near Seward, Dorchester and later Beaver Crossing. While in the Seward area shortly after their marriage, Ruth and Percy worked for Western Electric in Lincoln. While working at Western Electric, Ruth saved enough money to buy a new gas stove which she still used. Ruth also worked as a waitress at Verna's Cafe in Beaver Crossing and at the Flying V Restaurant near Utica. She was an avid lover of the outdoors and enjoyed getting on the tractor to help Percy with the farming. Together they also mowed Seward County abandoned cemeteries for several years and she also helped with his disc sharpening business. In September of 1988 Ruth became a contract carrier for the Lincoln Journal and is remembered by her supervisors as always meeting her obligations. She will be missed. For several years Ruth has also worked for Lauber-Moore Funeral Homes during visitations at Beaver Crossing Chapel and also in Milford and Friend as needed. Along with her very good friends, Zelma Nichols and Grace Roth, she wallpapered and painted many homes in the Beaver Crossing, Seward, Friend and Milford areas and as far away as Elmwood. She loved her family and enjoyed the opportunities of taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchldren. Ruth was a care-giver for many members of the community. She had a strong will and was always willing to accept the difficult tasks to make the lives of others easier.

Ruth is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and Brenda Stutzman, Alan Stutzman, all of Beaver Crossing; son-in-law and daughter, David and Diane Hobson, York; daughter-in-law and spouse, Joellen and John Eulberg, Beaver Crossing; ten grandchildren and spouses, Veronia Bonds, York, Adam, Brian, Jason and Dawn Stutzman, McCool Jct., Abby Stutzman, Beaver Crossing, Nicole and Scott Sherer, Lincoln, Leslie and Kenny Red, Omaha, Jessica and Shane Gorski, Lincoln, Timothy Eulberg, Lincoln; ten great-grandchildren, Kendra, Katelyn, Kayla and Dylan Bonds, York, Caleb, Christopher and Chelsea Stutzman, McCool Jct., Shannon Gorski, Lincoln, Kelynn and Jamin Cyr, Allen, Neb.; sisters, Letha (Richard) Rardin, Milford, Erma (Roland) Stofer, Crete; brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Elaine Sanburn, Dorchester; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rose Stutzman, Milford, Elda and Cecil Shettler, Wellman, Iowa and Morris and Connie Stutzman, Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Percy in 2004; son, Terry in 1980; brothers-in-law, Richard Rardin and Roland Stofer; and sister-in-law, Ruby Stutzman.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 17, 2005 at United Methodist Church in Beaver Crossing with Howard Banks officiating. Interment Beaver Crossing Cemetery.

Visitation 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Beaver Crossing and one hour before services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established and are directed in care of the family. Lauber-Moore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn V. Doty

Manitowoc, Wisc., resident, 69

Marilyn V. Doty, 69, of Manitowoc, Wis., died Nov. 15, 2004 at Manitowoc, Wis., after a courageous battle with Parkinsons Disease.

Marilyn was born July 29, 1935 at Sheboygan, Wis., to Wilbur and Evelyn (Reimer) Wright, and was a graduate of Sheboygan High School. On Nov. 16, 1956, she married Douglas Doty in Chicago, Ill. She retired in 1997 from Thornapple Manor in Hastings, Mich.

Surviving are one son, William (Nevy) Doty of Waupaca; two daughters, Sharon (Rick) Johnson and Dodie Lutzke of Manitowoc, Wis.; 8 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and twin sister, Marlene Neville of York.

Preceded in death by husband, Douglas Doty; parents, Wilbur and Evelyn Wright and one brother, John Wright.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Nov. 18, 2004 with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Sheboygan, Wis.

Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Louise V. Baker

York resident, 89

Louise V. Baker, age 89 of York, NE, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at York. She was born October 2, 1915 in Perry County, TN to Robert Lee and Viola (Brown) O'Guin. Louise was married July 4, 1936 at Hohenwald, TN to Clarence Baker.

Her survivors include her three sons; Wayne and his wife Darlene Baker of York, NE, Robert C. Baker of Birmingham, AL, Stephen D. and his wife Rosa Baker of Allen Park, MI; Two sisters; Lois Lynch of Astor, FL and Alber Vetie Williams of Allen Park; her brother Sherrill O'Guin of Hohenwald; eight grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband Clarence in 1984.

Graveside services will be held at the O'Guin Cemetery at Kimmins, TN at 11 am Saturday, March 5, 2005. Memorial gifts may be made in her name to York College. Metz Mortuary of York is handling local arrangements.

Robert E. Anderson

Stromsburg resident, 77

Robert E. Anderson, 77, of Stromsburg died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at Good Samaritan in Osceola.

Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Keith Brozek officiating. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg with military rites by Stromsburg Post #132.

Robert was born July 18, 1927 at York to Edwin and Margaret (Lind) Anderson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg. He attended country grade school at Glendale District #41 and graduated from Stromsburg High School. He joined the Navy July 6, 1945, as a Hospital Apprentice First Class at the United States Naval Hospital in Houston, Texas. After his honorable discharge he was engaged in farming, raising cattle, hogs and horses.

On March 12, 1952 he married Mildred (Minnie) Rosenberry. Bob farmed and was a substitute mail carrier. They moved to Stromsburg in 1990. He was in failing health with Parkinsons and entered the nursing home in January 1999.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church. He was a member of Elks, Masons and American Legion Post #132 where he was in the color guard carrying the US flag for all military funerals and Memorial Day services. He enjoyed being a pitcher on the Legion ball team and was a great Husker fan.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie; one daughter Christine (Monte) Hudson of Lincoln; one grandson, Bradley and one granddaughter, Heather, both of Lincoln; three nieces and six nephews. Preceded by his parents; an infant daughter, Sandra Sue; son, Brian; and in-laws, Foy and Marie Rosenberry.

Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton is in charge of arrangements.

Alethea Fansler

Osceola resident, 91

Alethea Katherine Fansler, 91, of Osceola, died Jan. 19, 2005 at the Osceola Good Samaritan Center. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. at Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola with Pastor Ray Norris officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Osceola Cemetery.

Alethea was born Nov. 26, 1913, to A.W. "Bert" and Matilda "Tillie" (Wilshire) Lewis at Osceola, Neb. She attended Osceola schools, graduating from Osceola High School in 1931.

Alethea worked as a toll operator for LT&T; in Osceola, Neb., for a number of years.

On July 3, 1945, she married Earl L. Lewis at Greenwood, Neb. Following marriage, they moved to Eureka, Calif., where Earl worked for the railroad. They returned to Osceola in the 1950s and then moved to York in the 1960s. Earl died in 1988.

On March 5, 2003, Alethea moved from York to Osceola Good Samaritan Center where she resided until her death.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Geraldine Rea of Seward, Lois Bouchard of York, Marie Lewis of Osceola and June Lewis of Boulder, Colo.; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her brothers, Basil, Ancil, Laurel, Bert and Dale.

Roberts-Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola is in charge of arrangements.

Winifred B. Kamtz

York resident, 84

Winifred B. Kamtz, 84, of York, died Thursday, July 15, 2004 at York.

She was the only child of L. T. and Rose (Fenster) Werth and was born Oct. 17, 1919 near Hampton, Neb.

Winifred was a longtime employee of Boyer Drug in York, having worked there for over 30 years. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York and the LWML as well. She enjoyed sewing clothes for others, traveling, cards and dancing all with her husband and friends.

On Oct. 20, 1940 she was married to Willis R. Kamtz at Hampton.

She is survived by a son, Gary (Karen) Kamtz of Scottsbluff; 2 daughters, Bonnie Gates of Omaha and Diane (Randy) Drew of York; 13 grandchildren, Lori Holmes, Kelly (Erika) Gates, Brett Gates, Heather Gates and Eric Gates, all of Omaha, Terry Cramer of Chicago, Curt (Holly) Cramer of Blair, Jody (Omar) Diaz of Chihuahua, Mexico, Cory (Kathie) Cramer of Wilbur, Amber Drew of York, Jennifer (Gregg) Hart, Alison Kamtz and Zachary Kamtz, all of Omaha; 2 step-grandchildren, Wendy Drew of Pleasantdale and Stacy and Marc Groetzinger of Aurora; 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Tim Marshall officiating. Burial will be in York Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church or Emmanuel Lutheran School.

Visitation will begin after 5 p.m. Sunday.

Twila B. Ehlers

Utica resident, 87

Twila B. Ehlers, 87, died July 11, 2004 in Coleridge, Neb.

She was born near Utica Sept. 9, 1916 to Fred and Mable (Strickler) Volzke. She graduated from Utica High School in 1934.

She married John Ehlers Oct. 6, 1935 in Utica. Twila worked for 15 years as secretary at Utica Public Schools and also worked at J.C. Penney Co. in Seward.

Surviving are a son, Gary (Linda) Ehlers of Utica; daughter, Pam (Dennis) Fielder of Coleridge; two brothers, Kenneth Volzke of Utica and Merlin (Catherine) Volzke of Anaheim, Calif.; sister, Leona Niemann of Seward; grandchildren, Alan Ehlers, Sharon Hartshorn, Heather Meyer, Melissa Grantski and Kacy Fielder; and 13 great-grandchildren. Preceded by her parents and husband, John.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 15, 2004, 2 p.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica with the Rev. John Burger officiating. Burial will be in Utica Cemetery.

Visitation Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; family will meet friends from 6:30 - 8 p.m., Volzke Mortuary in Seward, and one hour before service at the church Thursday.

Randy Tieken

Omaha resident, 60

Randy Tieken, age 60 of Omaha. Survived by wife, JoAnn; daughters, Janelle Tieken, Roseville, MN, Janice Cox and husband, Matthew, Omaha; grandson, Wyatt Cox; brothers, LaVerne, Seward, NE, Gene, Yakima, WA, Bob, Omaha, Lynn, Seward, NE; Sisters, Lola Reetz, Stromsburg, NE, Ruby Light, Payette, ID, Theo Rucker, Utica, NE. Preceded in death by parents, Herman and Alice Tieken; brother, Don.

Services will be held Tuesday July 20 11 am Colonial Chapel, 119th and Center. Visitation is Monday July 19 6-8 pm at the Colonial Chapel. Family requests memorials to Living Church of God, 2301 Crown Centre Drive, Charlotte, NC 28227-7705.

Dr. Carvel J. Holt

Grand Junction, Colo., resident

Graveside services for Dr. Carvel J. Holt will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 17, 2004, at the Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery in the Bradshaw/York area.

He died Feb. 17, 2004 in Grand Junction, Colo. A celebration of his life was held Feb. 21 at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church.

Donald I. Friesen

Henderson resident, 81

Donald I. Friesen, age 81 of Henderson, died Sunday, July 11, 2004 at York. He was born February 10, 1923 at Henderson to George W. and Anna (Koss) Friesen. Don was a 1941 graduate of Henderson High School, was a veteran of WWII and drove for Standard Oil in Henderson for 23 years. He married Ruth A. Wach on June 19, 1949 at Henderson. He was member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton and thoroughly enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald was an avid coin collector and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife Ruth of Henderson; son Steve (Sera) Friesen of Henderson and daughter Julie (Ardean) Buller also of Henderson; grandchildren, Jennifer (Stephen) Socha of Lincoln, Dan (Darcy) Friesen of Henderson, Mandy Friesen of Lincoln, Michelle Buller of Phoenix, AZ, Chad Buller of Owatonna, MN, and Todd Buller of Henderson; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Kyle Socha of Lincoln. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Edna M. Friesen and Mae Friesen both of Henderson and brothers-in-law Lawrence (Shirley) Wach and Kenneth (Talitha) Wach all of Sutton. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, George Anthony Friesen and Paul L. Friesen.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton with the Rev. Dan Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Friesen Cemetery west of Henderson. Memorials may be directed to the Henderson Fire Department. Visitation begins after 9:00 a.m., Tuesday at Metz Mortuary in Henderson. Condolences may be emailed to metz@mortuary.com. Metz Mortuary in Henderson is handling the arrangements.

Leslie C. Cash

Stromsburg resident, 86

Leslie C. Cash, 86, of Stromsburg, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital in Osceola. Services were held Monday morning at Evangelical Free Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Kerry Relihan officiating. Burial was in Grand Island Cemetery Monday afternoon with military rites by American Post #132. Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg was in charge of arrangements.

He was born Feb. 6, 1918 at Albion to Hugh and Mable (Woodworth) Cash. He trusted Christ at age 12; grew up in the Albion area attending Albion Country School. He enlisted in the Army Feb. 17, 1942 and was discharged Jan. 13, 1944, serving in WWII.

He married Bernadine Ivel Struebing Sept. 2, 1943. They farmed in the Albion and Central City area. They had three sons, David Leslie, Dennis Allen and Daniel Lee and daughter, Donna Rose.

On Oct. 4, 1970 Bernadine and Donna Rose were involved in a fatal accident. He then worked for Everett Grain Company at Ruleton and Goodland, Kan.

He married Berniece (Rasmussen) Luikens at Frisco, Colo., July 30, 1979. They worked for the Bureau of Reclamation at Green Mountain Dam in Kremmling, Colo. Missing farming, they purchased a small farm at Bennet in November of 1980 where they lived for nine years.

They served 14 winters as volunteers at Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas, retiring to Stromsburg in 1989.

He was a member of Stromsburg Evangelical Free Church; active in Central City and Grand Island Free Church and charter member of Country Bible Church.

Surviving are wife, Berniece; three sons, David Cash, Springfield, Mo., Dennis Cash, Houston, Texas, Dan (Pam Swanson) Cash, Millard; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Williams, Albion; nieces, nephews and many friends. Preceded by first wife, Bernadine, daughter, Donna; two brothers, Elmer Cash and Harold Cash; and baby sister.
